Ever try to sleep, and instead of sleeping (despite finally being tired), your brain decides to think up all these great, wonderful future scenes that need to be written down?

Because that's happened to me twice in the past two hours. I got one done, went back to bed, only to have my mind locked on a future Shep/Liara scene revolving around the whole concept of 'hero worship'.

And now my mind is filled with chats Shep could have with Tali.....I just want sleeeeeep

Heh Ive been doing the same... My line of focus changed after my last chapter and now I have to worry about conversation with Miranda and as much as I love Miranda I dont know if I can write for her

On another topic, has anyone ever wanted to do a fan fic of a fan fic. I know I have for that story I keep promoting High class Hostage, but the ending left it open for some great fan fics

Still not giving up.

Is there anyone who'd like to give me their thoughts on this monster of a chapter?

Every...single....night
The annoying thing? By the time I reach a pen and paper the idea has fled my mind and refuses to come back! T-T

I rather dislike this. Still not finished with the chapter I'm writing... But then I get this other idea I really want to write. It's rather annoying.

A friend has recently informed me of a programmed called GIT...I kid you not.
It's really meant for programming and scripting, but the mian feature is something called branching.

Not figuered it out just yet, but the theory is that I can write out a basic draft with the branching feature and see how the story could go at different branching points.

That sounds really cool. I might look that up. It could help a lot writing, or just would be cool to see how stories could go.

All the time. I usually keep a writing notebook and a pen on me at all times so I can jot down these ideas and flesh them out quickly.

Alternately, I don't sleep.  Either method works.

Branching actually sounds like a really useful tool. Let me know how that program turns out.

Not just when I sleep, pretty much whenever I listen to music. Whether it be something moody like metal, or video game/movie scores. This might be a corny analogy to explain it, but to me imagination is like butter on a frying pan. Once you find something to stimulate it, it spreads in all directions.

Lol.

Welcome to my life for the past year.

It's these thoughts that made me start writing in the first place.

Lol, I like the butter in a frying pan analogy. It reaches me in a personal way. Mmmm...butter....

I actually don't listen to music at all when I'm writing. I find that I get too distracted appreciating the bass lines/vocals/harmony/etc.

Well yeah, it does become distracting if you listen to metal while writing. But if you listen to something atmospheric/ambient then it may help a little.

But usually, I come up with ideas while I listen to music.

‘git’, actually, to stay with the approved capitalization ^_^

It’s a version control program that works best with text files. Let’s say you have a chapter in a file called chapter1.txt. You can add that under version control, and record (commit) the current state of the file. So, you have a first draft of your chapter, “It was a dark and stormy night…” and you record it. Then, you start making some changes—maybe the night wasn’t all that dark or whatever. Now you can record the file again, and thereby have both versions stored! You can do this for every change you make to the chapter, or the set of chapters that makes up your story. If you at some point want to go back to any of the versions of any of the chapters you have recorded, you can (whether to completely erase the things you did after that version or just to take a look to see what it looked like back then).

One way to think about it is an infinite undo/redo—but in which you have to save the state yourself.

Branches are an elaboration on the concept. They’re probably going to be only marginally useful in writing, but as an example, let’s say your chapter has a first section in which Shepard goes to a dance school, and a second section in which she wows everyone in Purgatory. You want to experiment with this a little, so instead of working on your master (default) branch with just these two sections, you create a new branch—and in this new branch, you insert a section inbetween those two where Shepard goes shopping for some tap shoes. Now you simultaneously have one branch—the master—in which you have school-purgatory, and the other branch with school-store-purgatory. If you decide that you like the store bit, you can merge it back into the master branch. If not, you can just get rid of that experimental branch. Or, maybe you decide you want to continue exploring even further…you can do that in the new branch, while simultaneously continuing writing the main story in the master branch.

git is a little elaborate to use, because it’s so powerful (there’s a lot that you can do with it). If you are on Windows and uncomfortable with the command shell, you could try a program called Tortoisegit. There is also another version control system called Subversion or SVN, which may (or may not) be easier. The graphical client is called TortoiseSVN.

(And thus concludes our short introduction to version control. Yes, it’s something I use a lot, mostly in programming but also for my writing…every new chapter and edit pass of a chapter is recorded separately, so I can can always recall an older version.)

Edit: just to clarify, this is not exactly the same as a backup. You would still back up the repository (which contains all of your files and the versions thereof).

Edit2: version control is useful just for yourself, but it’s most useful when you’re collaborating with someone else. Both can work on separate versions, and then they can be combined into one. Code is also far more elaborate in its interactions than regular text is—sometimes it’s hard to remember or even know all the changes you may have made—so it’s extremely important to use version control there.

Ugh, just cannot summon the enthusiasm to write this chapter. I don't know if it's because it's just more groundwork with a slight twist...although, oddly delivered or because I'm still fiddling about with details. And I'd ask for some thoughts but I don't want to spoil the story for those who have been following it.

At least this will be the final hurdle...

I can try take a look within the next 24 h, if you do want to bounce something off.

Oh, thank you, really, but I couldn't. That'd be asking too much, even if I'm sure you'd be a great help. I think I'm just going to hold onto what I've got but try and figure out an interesting angle.

So I think I may be nearing the end of the chapter finally... I was wondering about something though. I can't decide whether to leave it at a bit of a cliffhanger, where they just found out something was wrong and the like, and elaborate more on what happens later, or just write more about what is happening now. The first option seems a bit abrupt, but this part has been stumping me a lot lately, and none of the main characters are involved so I'm not sure if it will matter much in the long run, yet I don't want to make a bad start to this story. This might seem a bit confusing, and I'm pretty sure I wanted to add more to what I'm saying but I'm at a loss for words at the moment so perhaps I shall edit it after...
