There's the old adage I always bring up: arrive late, leave early.

I usually find it's better to end a scene/chapter early, because either you've reached a point where the audience has enough information and/or it creates a little intrigue rather than boring them.

So I think I may be nearing the end of the chapter finally... I was wondering about something though. I can't decide whether to leave it at a bit of a cliffhanger, where they just found out something was wrong and the like, and elaborate more on what happens later, or just write more about what is happening now. The first option seems a bit abrupt, but this part has been stumping me a lot lately, and none of the main characters are involved so I'm not sure if it will matter much in the long run, yet I don't want to make a bad start to this story. This might seem a bit confusing, and I'm pretty sure I wanted to add more to what I'm saying but I'm at a loss for words at the moment so perhaps I shall edit it after...

Cliffhangers. Posted Image  I've used a few of those and apparently frustrated a reader because he chimed in to say he hated my cliffhangers. Posted ImagePosted Image I use it when I'm sort of stuck, when I know I want to talk alot more on a subject or just simply adding suspense.

If you're going to say alot on the subject in the next chapter, using a minor cliffhanger is pretty good.

Do you guys ever feel like you have no idea what you're doing when you're writing a chapter? You're throwing ideas together, hoping they stick, and for some reason, people like them? Then you need to write another chapter, and you still don't know what you've done ):

Hrm. In short, yes. Mostly, I have a goal, and endpoint I need to reach, and I wonder "How do I get there?" so I decide to just feel my way through. Sometimes it's expedient and orderly. Sometimes it's like one of those wild road-trips where you mean to visit Arizona but you've suddenly found your way into Alberta, and you're stuck trying to find your way back.

I mean, so long as you get there, or somewhere equally as nice, I don't see the problem with fumbling around. I find that when I think too hard about something, it comes out stilted and cheesy and forced (thus, in need of heavy revision), whereas when I just kind of wing it and have fun, I don't always get what I want, but it's often more fluid and honest.

The fumbling around is just a little frightening, as there isn't even a goal to reach at times. It's writing mostly on instinct and...instinct. That's pretty much it. No goals, no plan, not even any characterization preparation beforehand. And somehow, it turns out better than you expected. And you still aren't sure why. It's like taking a car out into the desert with no idea where you're going. That's the terrifying part.

Anyways, yeah. If I think too hard, nothing works as well as when I'm not thinking or at least more concentrated on something else.

Haha, I totally feel this.  I can have an entire plot skeleton, even general scene layouts, and still not have a clue as to how I'm going to write the chapters.

At this point, I've hit chapter 10, cut out stuff I didn't know I didn't need until the time came to write it.  Conversely, I'm still setting up a story, when I intended to get to the meat back at chapter 6!

I'm going to keep on asking.

Is there anyone who'd like to take a look at my latest chapter here? I honestly don't care if it's negative or positive feedback. I just want feedback.

I can take a look at it tomorrow. Probably sometime in the afternoon or evening for me. It's one in the morning now.

All. The. Time.

Three words:
Quarian Martial Artist.

I still have no idea where that came from, but its been kind of a runaway success.

I...I can honestly see the appeal. It's kind of exciting! I'd imagine they'd have to be quite defensive getting into close combat range, considering the danger of getting their suit torn open by a martial weapon or whatnot.

Every chapter seems like that for me. I will read something, either from the news, or another fan fic and it will give me some inspiration. I'll put a few words on the page and by the end I'll have some new plot point. It works... Kind of.

So far, I haven't had the urge. Have I had the urge to base part of the lore in my story off of other fanfics? Yes. Will I? Most likely.

Have I had the urge to expand on someone else's story? Not really. I'll think up stuff in my mind sometimes, but what's there isn't enough to constitute a story.

No—though I don’t see a problem with it if you do, I guess, so long as the author is amenable. I have read a few oneshots written as extensions of a story, but they tend to be of the smutty kind.

When I first started out writing, I did a few works off of other fanfics. It was never for anything other than personal writing exercises, considering that the author's didn't always get back to me. Sometimes I'd differ on what my approach would be on a given chapter, and tried to write it my way, just to see if I could match the tone.

Sometimes it worked. I find it odd that I'm more comfortable writing off of commercial works, vs. fanfics. Perhaps I feel that since the commercial works are turning a profit, that renders it somewhat into public license (though this isn't quite right, as obviously I can't try to turn a profit with an ME fic, legally).

That's what my new story started out as. I read "Blackwork" (linked to the chapter where he is featured- beware the lemons) and loved the OC Mason Black. I started writing a story about him when James was a kid, then it turned into James' story. It's quite a beast of a story already, getting some great reviews.

It's easier to call it a fanfic about a fanfic when it's really about an OC. Otherwise, you're just taking inspiration from a story about an established character, so it doesn't really qualify as a fanfic of a fanfic.

Steven Hackett. The Wiki is your friend in case you can’t recall something like that! Usually, anyway.

I read a story by fortyfoureasons and the way they left the story at the end I just want to continue it... they were original characters, a human child Garrus adapted and Liara and Shepard child. But they were his creations.
