Also, I made a decision for this one that seems kind of strange in retrospect, but I think it’s the right one: I normally write in past tense, but there’s a flashback of sorts in this chapter…and it’s in present tense. Then the ‘present’ is written in past tense again.

Hopefully it works for the readers too ^_^

Anyone else play around with tenses a lot?

My review and story follower count have been going blow for blow for a while, it’s funny. The last four chapters, they’ve ended up the same.

I was going to write a retrospective of some kind when “Unity” got to this point.

Turns out I haven’t really formed many coherent thoughts. I’m just happy I’ve managed to get this far with no background or practice in writing. 30 chapters now (and ~93 k words). Milestones and all.

Got lots of favorite moments, but I think the biggest one for me is that I managed to write 30 chapters—covering about 7 days of events—until Shepard finally woke up. And, I think, establish the character somewhat through the others.

…Anyway. Mood: ^_^

Ah, hectic hectic days! Sorry I haven't been around much for the last week, and I will do my best to get caught up on all of the stories I'm following over the next few days. Haven't been able to write a single word for the last week, so today I'm going to try to buckle down and bang out at least half of a chapter.

And congrats to lill for 30 chapters! Wooo! I look forward to catching up on the last two or three that I missed!

Way to spoil the fact that Shep woke up! I was sure she was going to be comatose forever. Posted Image

Edited: Because for some reason it removed my line breaks.

In regards to my Fanfic (W.I.P.) I need to know, What is the earth date of the beginning of the reaper invasion?

Edit: Also, what sites allow you to post fanfics?

I don't believe there's a set date of when the reapers first hit Earth, but I'd hazard a guess that it's around August.
My rationale is that, according to the wiki, the Alpha relay is destroyed iirc early 2186, around late January to early March, I'd wager. The Reapers invade about 6 months later, which would place the invasion around late July to early-mid September.

Some said that the date of the release was the in game canon of the invasion of the Reapers, but I can't find anything that lines it up like that, and that would account for that kind of discrepancy. So while I wish I knew the answer for certain, I'm afraid I can say as much (nor can anyone else, from what I can tell).

Also, there are a few websites where you can post fics.
Fanfiction.net is my personal favourite, though if you want to post there, they have a period of 3 or so days once you register where you can't post anything. To prevent spam, or something. So if you want to post there, you should register soon. It's a nice site, has a good search feature, and has a large community.

Outside of that there's deviantart, which is alright, but it's hard to post a fic chapter by chapter because AFAIK there's no easy way to include progression. You have to manually post links. Also, the community is larger technically, but less people looking for fics there. Also, worse search features regarding fics.

And then there's another website archiveofourown.org, which seems great, but has a lower community I think than ffnet and requires an invite to get in.

There are other websites, but those are the big three imo.

I don't think the exact date is known, beyond "sometime in 2186".   I've made the assumption that it's midsummer because that works for me, and makes sense with the (somewhat sketchy) info that is available about the durations involved in the ME1-ME2 timeline.  Also, it's clearly not fall or winter in Vancouver when the game begins.  (If someone does know an exact date, I'd very interested!)

As to where to post, I believe fanfiction.net and livejournal are the most popular, but others probably know a lot more than me.

I've messed with tenses a little bit (and screwed up a few times, which is why I have beta readers). I've been writing dreams/nightmares in the present tense while the rest of the story is written in third person past tense. Feedback has generally been good, the general consensus that the present tense of the dream sequence lends it a different feel and sense of urgency.

How the heck do you get to 5K in a day? Writing even 2K over a week is a challenge for me.

I'm going to second this. I'll feel a bit roughed up after 2k or 2.5k of creative writing in a day. I mean, I've done 5k in a day before, but it took a lot out of me.  Jeez.
I've done maybe 200 words today? Now I feel pressured :crying:

I hear that... I've been feeling guilty because my rate has really slowed the last few weeks, but work kicking my tail lately, so the energy just hasn't been there.  But the guilt that I SHOULD be writing more than I am lingers in spite of all logic.  XD

When I finished my last chapter I did about 6.5k in one day, in about three sittings.  That was fairly brutal for me, but I really wanted to finish it up.

It was fun watching the feed of the landing!

I don’t think I can do much more than about 3 k per day, that’s 8 hours of work…

Ha! Finally broke 100, story followers got it by one over reviews ^_^ Also had the biggest single day of visitors (across all chapters), although I did publish earlier in the day than usual so I probably need to take a two- or three-day average to gauge it properly (in case today’s is comparatively lower).

For me it's really a question of distraction and flow. If I am completely undistracted and the scene in my head is flowing well, I can definitely pump out an absurd amount of writing in a day. It actually only took me about four hours to write what I did yesterday because I had absolutely no distractions and I was able to just type without stopping. I never even slowed down because the scenes running through my head were very clear. It will require a fair bit of editing before it's publish-worthy, but I established a good base quickly. My original goal when I started writing this story was to do 5K a day (some people might remember me mentioning that goal from way back) because I'd done it before when I wrote a story years ago for a local RPG-related contest on a deadline (over 180K words in 16 chapters over the course of two months... was writing about 5K a day and then spending every third or fourth day editing the chapter I'd just finished).

The problem: A day where my writing flows like that and I'm completely undistracted is rare. Back then, I didn't have much distraction because my girls spent the majority of the three-month period with their mom, my XBox had the RROD, and I was out of work. I had nothing to do really BUT write. In practice I rarely write more than 1.5K in a day these days. And most of this week I wrote nothing at all because I was focused on other issues, and what little time I had free I spent playing Skyrim... Posted Image

I wish that I could hold myself up to writing 5K per day on a regular basis. At a rate like that, I'd actually have this entire fanfic finished by now and would be well on my way into a second or third one. Sadly, it's really a fluke. If I managed to do it again today, it would be a miracle. I'm not even going to try. Today I'm shooting for 1K. Maybe 1.5. If I do more, great, but everyone who writes knows that when you force it, it tends to be bad, right?

The only reason I mentioned my word count at all was because I was astonished and wanted to pat myself on the back a bit, since that sort of output in a day for me is rare nowadays. Posted Image

To anyone who has been reading my fic:

I have a question about formatting. As people who are reading it may know, I'm shifting back and forth between the present (events happening at Terra Nova) and several weeks earlier (allowing me to explore the characters and relationships during more mundane events). However, there is a specific turning point coming up in the latter half of my story that could definitely use a bit of backstory to explain it... but I don't want to insert said exposition until after the event itself.

So my question is: Would it be too jarring to go from present to a week back, to present, to a week back, to present, to 3 YEARS back, to the present again?

Is that too jarring a jump?

I'm not sure it's too large of a jump, but that said, I've set it in my mind that there are two timelines that will meet up soon enough. For that trend to be broken could disrupt the balance.
If this isn't something that could be done in a flashback then...well, you've woven some serious magic into your fic so far, so I have a hard time believing you couldn't pull it off.
I would say that you shouldn't have it in the middle of a chapter, as it would likely ruin the flow. At the beginning or ennd would work better, at least in terms of the "past" scenes. Following it or preceding it with a Present scene would work. So long as it's not sandwiched between two "1 week before" scenes.

It’s a lot of jumping, but it could work if the events are clearly connected, it could work well enough. Without knowing the details—and being terribly remiss on your story anyway :(—one option would be to split the flashback into an interlude.

I have been working on a Shenko piece for a while. My worries regarding fan fiction is that I am not quite sure how to do it. Lol . What parameters do I use to write it? Do I need to stay in the bounds of canon? Do I have be sure that all my facts regarding years and such are accurate? How much is too much writing? Forgive me but I have been in too many creative writing classes, which has made me over think many things I do in terms of writing.

Also, is there a shenko/ male shenko support group? I would love to get in contact with other fans and read their stuff and have them critique mine as well.

You could try the Kaidan thread on the Character & Romance forums for comrades.

Whether you stray from canon or characterization is up to you…just tell the story you want to tell! You should note major deviations so that your readers know what to expect, though. Most people won’t care about small deviations from the story, and many quite like large deviations (known as Alternative Universes). Relatively (much) fewer like changing characterization.

Would you happen to have a particular example of something you’re concerned about?

Hehe. Some of it was basic stuff, but a lot was more my own stylistic preference, rather than hard-and-fast rules.
