Missing commas before names and similar is a terribly common affliction, I’ve noticed.

“What do you think, James?” and so on.

Has FF.net's font and sizing changed AGAIN for anyone else? Do not want.

Yeah, I notice they're changing FFN. Think it's better, imo. The font I chose ended up bigger but I don't mind; I don't have to squint. Posted Image

It's gotten rather quiet here, so I thought I would ask a question.

How often do you read other people's fanfics? I find it hard to get into other people's fics sometimes, which rather leads me away from reading them often.

I read other people's fanfics all the time. It helps me improve my own writing.

On a side, I have a question for all other writers out there. Do you think that the whole Joker/EDI thing should be a mandatory pairing for all ME stories or is it okay to cut it out completely? I'm asking because I'm about to introduce something in my fic that pretty much annihilates the possibility of any romantic involvement between the two and I'm a bit worried that people might angst about it.

That's a touchy subject. Personally, Joker is one of my favorite characters, and EDI is fairly well done as well. The two seem to go together so well, also. To cut them apart, it should have a good reason, and you should probably be careful about it. By annihilate, do you mean like a grandly obvious destruction of romance, or just a slight, maybe hinting something that still annihilates it but might take a bit of thought to figure out?

It's not going to be anything grand but it will hint on that. As for the reason... well, let's just say that I've decided to give EDI a bit greater destiny. ;)

I read other fanfics all the time. In a way, it's a (smaller) motivating factor. I just love a good story, so I'm never opposed to sitting down and reading something good :)

As for Joker/EDI...well, your fic is AU, so I don't see any problem with further deviating by not pairing Joker/EDI. Hell, EDI could get together with the God Emperor for all I care, so long as it's well written :P
I think that EDI's journey across ME2 and ME3 is a really well done one, and part of that has to do with Joker, obviously. So long as you keep fairly true to her character, I don't think you'll get much backlash, if any at all.

Fairly often, but I'm very particular about what kind of stories I read.

I don't like stories stuffed with fluff or stories with a lot of grammatical mistakes. It takes away from the immersion of the narrative if I have trouble making out what the author is trying to say because s/he has no punctuation to separate the ideas. I also don't like stories where the characters' choices and moods seem to change almost whimsically, simply to go along the author's plot than any actual decision on the character's part.

That being said, I do like stories that show flawed protagonists with subtext and a compelling interpretation of characters/events. Fast-moving action is always nice too.

What, in particular, makes it hard for you to get into other people's fics sometimes?

Edit; Apparently, I took an hour to compose my response. Damn my short attention span.

@Dark Satris: You'd probably have to find a beta-reader to beta-test your story. You can always search through FFN or ask someone here

One more question! What exactly is an AU? I've seen that term used a lot but it seems different than what I think it is. Also, a self-insert. Is that just when you put yourself in the game or..?

Icy- I'm not exactly sure, it's just hard getting into the story sometimes. Maybe it's because it's Shepard (We all have our own canon Shepard), but i'm not exactly sure. It could be that I just pick the moments when i have trouble sitting still, when I just need to do something... On a side note, I did read your one shot All In awhile back... I had a smile on the whole time and was laughing at parts. Well done. *claps*

AU means alternate universe. Same characters but put into very different circumstances from the canon. Self-insert is pretty much what you think it means. The author put him/herself into the story as a character. I haven't seen or read one yet where it didn't warp the story around the SI character.

As for All In, I'm glad you enjoyed reading it. I remember when I was writing it, I was laughing hysterically because I thought the whole thing was just so ridiculous. I actually only have a vague and basic idea of how poker works, and yet, it was enough to write that whole one-shot. Writing is a weird experience at times.

The AU stands for Alternative Universe. And yes, SI is when you put yourself into the game/movie/whatever. It also has variants like Author's Avatar when basically the author does not put himself into the story but introduces an OC that acts as voice of the author.

I try and read other fics but I do find it hard to switch off my 'editor mode'. Especially when I see an oddly-structured sentence or suspect dialogue. I'm just too fussy...

^ It’s a little hard, sometimes, but can always leave a review, so it might be helpful.

@MacNasty: I view every Shepard a different character, so that part’s not an issue for me.

True. Though then I'm tempted into full-on chapter notes (as some here may be able to attest) rather than a review.

A lot of people here are generally very good, so it's not a concern, and I'm quite jealous of where some of you find your inspiration and such.

In other cases, it's just the subject matter or characters that don't interest me. Though I'm sure that's a common thing.

I love to read fanfiction. Years back I was addicted to it in reference to another genre of works, and now I am back into it for ME. Unfortunately, writing my own fanfic has limited the time I can spend reading the works of others. I've been really hoping to get out a chapter every three days or so, and it's now been over a week since my last one went up. I'm praying I'll be able to finish Chapter 9 today so that I can post chapter 5.

But I am falling behind on reading the fics I've been following, and I still have a list of about 15 I haven't even started yet, but want to get to. That makes me sad. I love to immerse myself in a good story, whether a published work, a fanfic, or whatever. As long as something about it grabs my attention, I'll spend as much time as I can reading it.

I dont think most writers mind something like this. I know I took a lot of what you said about mine as constructive and used it and even try to remember that damn comma. I actually really appreciated it. Not that everyone would, but taking some thing I picked up on your edit I went back and re edited the first three chapters and will do a couple more after I get chapter 12 done...

That's nice to hear, and I'm glad it's appreciated. It's not generally meant as a criticism, just more like 'script notes' I'd been used to seeing. Not a 'this is wrong' but a 'how about this?'

And I don't mind doing that sort of thing, it's just it takes me a while. Plus, by then, I've already taken myself out of the story a little and don't feel competent at helping in that regard.

Personally, I think I've gotten a little restless with this latest chapter of mine and just need it out of the way, even if it's no more than 800 words and the 'action' bit at the end feels like a repeat. I've tried thinking around the problem but having no luck, and that makes me disposed towards easy distraction...

^ Sometimes a short chapter is just the right thing to do. Difficulty extending something could be your brain telling you that it shouldn’t be.

Someone just caught a little detail I’d hinted at, that makes me ^_^

Yeah, it's not so much that I worry about it being short. It's if it's short and unsatisfying, because it feels like I'm doing variations on chapters 7 and 10, which were already too similar for my liking. I did have the idea of using a public environment rather than another goddamn Cerberus base, which should hopefully lend it a different dynamic, but I haven't completely thought that through yet.

Otherwise, I'll just have to hope the plot reveals are significant enough.

I am definitely pleased with my decision to hold back a couple chapters to keep ahead of the curve. This is the fourth time I've decided to move an entire section from one chapter to another, and I couldn't do that if I was publishing them as I finished them.

Has anyone else written a part of their story and then realized that something else really needed to be included first? This seems to happen to me a lot. Maybe it's because I do my writing on the fly...

All. The. Time. <_<

Then again, I was originally writing the story for practice and only expanded on some of it, and began uploading to FF.net, because it had gained a little audience. I've been able to work some elements into later chapters but I feel I could've told a better story by avoiding being so vague at earlier points, since I was only giving myself 'wiggle room' while certain plot elements were undecided.

I don't think I've ever written a whole section within a chapter and then moved it to another one...I've taken small bits of info from one chapter to another. Sometimes I write isolated sections that I fit into chapters when appropriate, but I doubt I''ve moved one section to another after having made the initial decision to include it.

I write on the fly, and if I feel I missed something in the past, I add it later in some form or another. Forces me to adapt, to keep myself in check, to own my mistakes. It works for me, at least.

All the time. Some I really enjoy, such as "First Contact". Others I read, and then stop at a certain point. Sometimes I find that reading other stories ruins my own story, even my own game. Because I remember that story. Kind of odd.

Quick question. Is there some sort of website/database that includes the dialogue from ME/ME2/ME3 in a text format? Or do I have to use YouTube?

I don't mind using YT, it's just an issue when your looking for specific dialogue. =P

Also I should get Chapter 4 out by Thursday, You can continue to love/hate my fic, haha.
