LOL. Thanks. Not really happy about letting go of certain luxuries, but it's preferable to being without internet for the better part of a year. And now, if I buckle down and concentrate, I'll have chapter 12 of my story finished so I can publish Chapter 8 in the morning!

Incidentally, if a starship exploded in orbit around a planet, would it be visible in the dusk sky on the planet's surface? Waffling on this point. Not exactly critical to my story, but still...

We're talking something like a dreadnought or a carrier (not a fighter or a shuttle)?  Yes.  The ISS is significantly smaller, but it can still be easily seen with the naked eye (albeit as a dot).

Something as large as a dreadnought going bang in low planetary orbit would likely attract some attention.

And a second incidentally... Does anyone ever feel bad when you publish a chapter in which not much happens? I mean, the scenes I have are important for other things they set up, but chapter 11 of my story really didn't have a lot going on. Just a few conversations, a little minor drama, and lots of information about a certain pair of prototypes... which still have no name.

The chapter I'm currently working on is like that, to a degree. My previous chapter is also like that.

Nothing wrong with it, if it's what you feel is necessary to tell your story right.

Couldn't say... Haven't published yet, though I am at least done with editing the prologue and have started my first chapter! I've noticed it's a lot less frustrated editing stuff soon after finishing it than editing an entire chapter on it's own. So much so that I just gave up halfway through the prologue. It's not very important and my first chapter seems to be flowing much better, but maybe I will go back and finish editing the prologue. Also, congratulations Drussius!

On a side note, I've got a question for the people who play an instrument. If any of you play guitar, I think i heard some people say they do, just two quick questions. First, I've been getting a bit more into jazz guitarists but I can't find many good ones, any recommendations? Partially forgotten the second one, perhaps I'll remember later... Hope you don't mind my offtopicness.

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it per se, I just feel like I wrote a ton of filler and nothing that directly moves the plot or the characters' development along directly. It needed to be done for the story, and I hope it will still be interesting enough to read, but it's one of those chapters that just feels... slow, maybe? Not really sure what it is precisely that has me looking at it and feeling like it needs something.

Was just wondering if anyone else had chapters like this. That really have to be there, but when they're done, you're looking at them and going "Great! Now that that's established, I can get to the matter at hand!"

Hey all, I updated my story with a new chapter.

Chapter 10: Because of You

Check it out!

Also, I apologize for my absence. I just want to let the people that pmed me that I will go back to my previous chapter and do the changes that they've suggested, along with looking at their stories as well. Just been a little busy these last few weeks.

Yup. Feels agonizing when you're moving so slowly because you need to set up certain events. I haven't gotten to the matter at hand yet. I'll let you know if I get there ;)

Hey everyone, it's been a while, but I'm finally starting to get a little settled (and have so much to catch up on!)

How is everyone keeping? ;p

Dead tired. Getting too old to stay up until five in the morning for no reason anymore.

How's adjusting to your new place and country?

Heh, I actually originally hail from here, but admittedly having gotten used to England, it does take a bit of re-adjusting. Work starts in 10 days, and it is going to be absolutely manic; happened to have picked the shortest straw apparently, with surgery at the busiest hospital in the country.

Thank goodness I have friends to update stories for me ;)

Just call me Mac. I would say everyone does... But mostly people just quote what I say then respond to it.

Blargh!!! Darn you all sources of media entertainment!!!

Rasum frasum...I sit down to write, get a paragraph done, then my brain goes "ooh, shiny" and I get side-tracked for an hour or so. I get myself back on track, and then it's time to go to sleep...

Yes yes, 1st world problems I know...sigh...

On the other hand, I am happy and proud that so many of you have gotten so much work done, some of you even finishing your works! That's always a crowning achievement.

EDIT: [waves at Jen]

Welcome back, Jen! Glad to hear that you're in your new... or old... home. Sorry to hear it's been quite so manic, however. I was just asking where you'd gone off to a few days back. I forgot you said you were moving... Guess I'm a bit scatterbrained at times.

Well, at least you've got ten days to re-adjust before all hell breaks loose :P I'm sure you'll be fine!

Yes, in the meantime, I'll keep pawing Forever As One updates off onto T.A. Blackwell, and find someone to finish Nova et Vetera for me ;)

Wait... isn't it crazy o'clock for you North America people to be awake?

Cheers, Drussius.

I'm too lazy to trawl through old posts, but... if there was any reason in particular, I'm happy to help :)

Haha, I've been shifting my sleep schedule slowly so that I can have one more appropriate for school this fall. Now I fall asleep around 9:30pm and wake up around 4:30. Only about an hour and a half more time shifting to go :)

As for pawning off FAO and NeV...well, you could learn to harness space magic...:wizard:

Heh, that sounds like a very sensible thing to do! I have made no move to try and get over jet lag in the 2 weeks I've been back. Having to start work on an hour's sleep is going to be... interesting :P

And pffffffft who needs space magic when there's a handy "Complete" button on the "Manage Stories" page ;)

As to the time, I'm always up at this hour. It's harder in the summer since my kids are home... but through most of the year I sleep when they are at school and I'm active in the afternoons and overnight.

As to the reasons behind my inquiry, I had written a small bit of emergency medical care into one of my chapters and was curious about the thoughts of our resident medical expert. Posted Image

Wasn't really looking to do more than run it by you when you have time and ask if there are any glaring problems with it. I didn't get into great detail or anything, but I'm a complete idiot in the realm of medical care. For all I know, the life saving treatment I allude to would be more likely to kill the patient than stabilize them. But it's not that big a deal, really... I kept it as vague as I could while still trying to make my story's resident asari medic sound like she knew what she was talking about. Posted Image

It's great for really bringing immediacy of the situation into play as well as allowing your readers a perspective to instantly connect with. You can portray a lot of drama in the things that narrator is uncertain/does not know about.

Heh, yeah. And that's why I chose it to some extent.

It's just that I have to spend considerable time poring over every bit, making sure the prose isn't too clunky, while trying not to overdo it with the narration. And you have to be quite careful describing even the simplest of actions without repeating earlier words and phrases. Definitely going to have to look at other ways of portraying 'running for your life' during this latest chapter. :P

Oh, of course! I've got some paperwork to finish (heh, procrastination is one of the reasons I'm re-visiting this forum ;p), but I should be able to get a good look in by the end of the weekend at the very latest, maybe tonight if I miraculously manage to clear this pile of dung.

I'll PM you my email address.

Oh, and - thank you for the kind words. I'm sure T.A. will appreciate it; silly girl refuses to believe how good her writing is, and how seamlessly she fit everything in. Seriously what is it with people with talent not realising how good they are?

No problem. Actually, if you don't mind, I'll just PM you the relevant section here on this site. It's not very long, so whenever you get to it is fine. I don't plan to publish the chapter in question until I finish my next chapter, so there's no great hurry.
