On one hand I can kind of understand why they're doing what they do.Some fics are just...absolutely horrendous. Not many, but some. I mean, I'm sure somewhere on FF.net, there's a 450 word fic in the Harry Potter universe buiolt around the lyrics of an evanescence song (while also including full lyrics, which is against TOS, technically). I mean, I don't want to come off as elitist, but does anyone need to have access to a sub-500 word fic where Hermionie and Ron sing a song from Glee? Like, I have a hard time finding any merit in that, the same way that I'd find a 5000 word long rape scene one-shot lacking in merit.
I don't mind the guidelines ff.net has, but they should be flexible. The world isn't goinng to end if a fic has some ligh sexual material in an M rated fic.
That said, due to FF.net not having an MA option(and apparently have no interest bringing it back), a lot of people are forced to use M, and well...M stories aren't allowed to depict any violence or sexual content, only refer to it IIRC. So falling under the TOS can become quite...impossible.
I think there have probably been a lot of stories that have been targeted due to this, if not by CU, then by other like-minded people who are less courteous.
I put my stuff on FF.net because I don't really know of anywhere else, other than deviantart, which I do not feel like returning to. I don't like their submission process, and it's hard to find what you're looking for there. If someone reports my fic and I lose my story...I have copies on my hard drve, I'll post them elsewhere. *shrug*
I'm not big on CU, but they're not a big group. Some of them seem nice, others, not much. But I'd wager that they're just the visible ones that are report-heavy.
However, my point is: yes, there are some horrible fics out there that barely qualify as such, but what ultimate harm are they commiting? I see horrible fics all the time, and some are those you used as examples. But, I can spot these fics at just their summaries or looking at their word length. If I did end up clicking on the fic, then I can really spot it for what it is within the first few lines. Then, I click the back button and I never come across those specific fics again. I don't give them the time of day. What is preventing this group from doing the same? To be honest, I don't see what purpose the guidelines fanfic have now. It's turned into a huge database that can be used by a variety of people that are looking for different things.
Some people enjoy songfics, some enjoy the troll parodies and some enjoy the script format. All of which violate the guidelines and all of which garner attention from specific groups. My point is, how much control does the site manager/moderators/whatever have? Yeah, they can delete stuff, but what is the point? It will eventually turn up again, all of it, and it will attract those people that originally enjoyed those type of fics all over again.
The only thing they are doing is upsetting users from wrongfully deleted fics and users that actually write the fics that violate the guidelines and giving power to groups like Critics Unite. CU serves little purpose besides openly insulting users that write things that get on their nerves and advertising fics they want to delete on their forums. It comes off as arrogant and gives the impression that they think they know what is best for a
massive database of fics that entertain a massive userbase with a variety of tastes and skill for writing. I understand the need for critics, but not when these critics think that they need to just rip into people or think that they need to be on the frontlines of a fanfic purge that is better suited for the people that actually came up with the guidelines.
In my opinion, I think they just need to let sleeping dogs lie. These fics aren't hurting anything, they can be ignored and fanfic is deleting fics that really have no other place to go. What other fanfic database is known well enough to host more mature fics that don't have the reputation that sites like adultfanfic have? Why not just bring back the MA rating and have users submit their ages to use it? Place that screen depicting the laws you see on other more adult sites for underage users and all that.
This purge isn't going to do anything in the long run. CU thinks that they are doing something great, when in reality, several weeks from now, to maybe a few months, things will go back to just like they were before. Fanfic is a site with a very loose screening process. The "undesireables" that have CU's and fanfic.net's panties in a bunch will come back and all that effort will be for nothing until the next purge. So, what's the point? Just hit the back button....
