I am currently writing a fic and I need some help. I am really bad at coming up with names, and as such have been having trouble coming up with some names for ships. For the most part I just need some throwaway names for some, non-important, ships. Through i could also use some suggestions for a ship that is important to the plot (though I kinda want to come up with that one on my own)

Ships have naming conventions in the Alliance

Frigates (ie, the Normandy): Systems Alliance frigates are named after great battles of human history (Iwo Jima, Hastings, Agincourt, Normandy).

Cruisers are named for Earth cities:  In the Alliance Navy, cruisers are named after Earth cities (New Delhi, Tokyo).

Carriers:  named after great leaders, artists, and intellectuals from human history

Dreadnoughts:  Named for mountains:  Hannah Shepard was captain of the Kilimanjaro as of ME2, there's also the Everest that ran search and rescue at Mindoir.

Which species do need a ship name for?

I'm pretty sure any writer who fails the test, short stories or otherwise ... should just flat out stop writing. :P

Shall we take this to the nth degree then?

The MrStoob test:

1.  Does your story include a black person? No? Fail. Stop writing.
2.  Does your story include a disabled person? No? Fail. Stop writing.
3.  Does your story include a poor person? And so on, and so forth.

Pandering to demographics is an awful way to approach creativity. Write what you want to write I say.

The test is generally applied to stories or films that have a fairly major female character involved, to determine whether or not the named female cast is simply there for decoration, or as Jacob would put it in ME2, "the priiiiize".

It's not pandering to a demographic, it's a small test to determine whether or not the writer gives a crap about writing actual characters. No story needs women in it, but if you choose to include them, there's absolutely no need to avoid filling out their character to even the most minimal degree.

I actually think that test is a good way to create a strong character, period.

There's loads of baby name sites, I've used one myself when stuck.

Heh, I’m actually pretty sure there are some actual ship name generators, if you’re looking for private and merchant ship names. Or you could use just codes for merchants, MSV UFN232323838383 or whatever. The ships are a little more specific on the Alliance side at least…the other fleets are a little hard to extrapolate, so I just made up my own conventions or avoided giving them names :)

The SA naming convention for reference (the Wiki has listed a few ships, you may want to check you’re not ‘clashing’ with one):

— Dreadnoughts are named after mountains.
— Cruisers are named after cities.
— Frigates are named after famous battles (this was a really silly decision, by the way). One I used was Leyte, for the battle of the Leyte Gulf in WWII.
— Carriers are named after great thinkers.

— Fighters and interceptors are probably just coded after their carrier/cruiser/dreadnought.
— I decided to name the Hospital Ships I invented (each SA fleet has two) after rivers for the traditional notion of ‘healing water’. So I’ve got a Tiber, Ob, Danube, Yangtze, ….

Edit: oops, someone got there with links first.

Hey, everyone!
I have a question regarding the placement of commas in direct speech in English. I've recently learned that the comma is supposed to be put inside the quotation marks like this:

"The train is arriving," he said.

But what about when there's an exclamation or a question mark at the end of the sentence? Where do I put the comma then?

"The train is arriving!," he yelled.
"The train is arriving!" He yelled.

The comma convention varies, actually. US uses inside always, UK tends to use ‘logical comma’, which is inside when it belongs in the sentence.

You don’t use a comma with an exclamation or question mark, and you don’t capitalize:

“The train is arriving!” he exclaimed.

Thanks for the clarification - I tried to get the answer out of reading others' fan fiction stories, but everybody seemed to place the comma differently, so I couldn't tell which one was considered correct.

You’re quite welcome to! I used the longest/important rivers for the original 18, and after some 3d6 rolling, the 16 that remain at the beginning of the Battle for Earth are SSMV's Nile, Amazon, Yangtze, Mississippi, Congo, Amur, Mekong, Ob, Tiber, Danube, Parana, Volga, Murray-Darling, Niger, Seine, and Ganges.

The other species have a few of their own, but this is another one of those ‘human inventions’ (really just a remnant of actual marine combat…)

If you're looking for names for Alliance Ships, they have naming conventions based on the type of ships: frigates are named after important battles (eg: Normandy, Hastings), cruisers are named after cities (eg: Tokyo, Cairo), carriers are named after great artists and thinkers (eg: Einstein) and dreadnoughts are named after mountains (eg: Kilimanjaro)as seen here.
They also have examples of Merchant, Asari and Turian ship names here. Other than that Behind the Name is great for looking up human first names which you could use

Late to the party it seems. Ah well.

Not much to say right now, aside from that I really don't like writing my characters into painful situations. I keep getting this antsy kind of writers' block where I know exactly what to write and how to write it, but I'm just like "Oh man, poor _____. Why am I doing this to them? :( "

Been trying to finish this chapter for three hours and I can't seem to eke out those final words at a decent pace. Just frustrating. Earlier today I wrote some lighter stuff for later in another chapter to get my mind off it, but despite the progress there, it hasn't helped much. :\\ I mean, my Shep wasn't going to have the most tragic life anyway, but I know there will be parts in the future where I'll balk like today.

Anyone else struggle with this, or am I just crazy? :wizard:

Anyone know what's going on at fanfiction . net? Is the site really going to remove stories that are too sexual/violent? If true, that's disturbing, but I also pity the person who has to sift through all the zillions of stories on that site :)

I don't know. That really sucks if so. Some of the more adult fics can be pretty good and there really isn't an alternative site that I know of that these authors can post their stuff. Adultfanfic is really just a hub of some of the more tasteless crap out there. Maybe anarchiveofourown (or whatever) will become the place to go for the fics that are a litte more violent or sexual, but who knows? Hopefully, fanfic will depend on people reporting these stories and hopefully readers won't cop the good fics out and they can hide....

Actually, if you go to the site gears mentioned a while ago at WTFFanfiction, it has an article referring to the people taking chunks of stories off of ffnet. The people removing the stories are from a group called Critics Unite, and if you read some of what they say in their own threads, they kinda sound like... well, supremacists. I may be exaggerating, but they really sound domineering and condescending even in their own forum. Anyways, they go right for people who break the rules that ffnet lists, so as long as stories don't violate them, it should be fine.

Read some of their threads. They sound like they're trying to start the Fanfic Inquisition or trying to be some sort of authority for fanfics. I don't think I'll be making friends with them anytime soon. <_< IMO, if fanfic wants to clean its site up, they should be the ones to do it. Without any member involvement. When they get involved, then things start getting subjective and I've already read some accounts of fics getting wrongfully deleted. If I was an author that had some problems with this, I wouldn't want my fics deleted based on the word of some random member from a group on a power trip.

On one hand I can kind of understand why they're doing what they do.Some fics are just...absolutely horrendous. Not many, but some. I mean, I'm sure somewhere on FF.net, there's a 450 word fic in the Harry Potter universe buiolt around the lyrics of an evanescence song (while also including full lyrics, which is against TOS, technically). I mean, I don't want to come off as elitist, but does anyone need to have access to a sub-500 word fic where Hermionie and Ron sing a song from Glee? Like, I have a hard time finding any merit in that, the same way that I'd find a 5000 word long rape scene one-shot lacking in merit.

I don't mind the guidelines ff.net has, but they should be flexible. The world isn't goinng to end if a fic has some ligh sexual material in an M rated fic.

That said, due to FF.net not having an MA option(and apparently have no interest bringing it back), a lot of people are forced to use M, and well...M stories aren't allowed to depict any violence or sexual content, only refer to it IIRC. So falling under the TOS can become quite...impossible.
I think there have probably been a lot of stories that have been targeted due to this, if not by CU, then by other like-minded people who are less courteous.

I put my stuff on FF.net because I don't really know of anywhere else, other than deviantart, which I do not feel like returning to. I don't like their submission process, and it's hard to find what you're looking for there. If someone reports my fic and I lose my story...I have copies on my hard drve, I'll post them elsewhere. *shrug*

I'm not big on CU, but they're not a big group. Some of them seem nice, others, not much. But I'd wager that they're just the visible ones that are report-heavy.

I’m not entirely sure what the logic behind disallowing MA is (or, really, who actually decides what is an isn’t MA). I suppose I’ll have to leave in solidarity if they really start getting silly with deletions.

Apparently, this isn't the first time this has happened, according to the article of wtffanfiction. A viable option is just to wait until they finish their purging phase... unless it evolves into the Fanfiction Inquisition or something.

However, my point is: yes, there are some horrible fics out there that barely qualify as such, but what ultimate harm are they commiting? I see horrible fics all the time, and some are those you used as examples. But, I can spot these fics at just their summaries or looking at their word length. If I did end up clicking on the fic, then I can really spot it for what it is within the first few lines. Then, I click the back button and I never come across those specific fics again. I don't give them the time of day. What is preventing this group from doing the same? To be honest, I don't see what purpose the guidelines fanfic have now. It's turned into a huge database that can be used by a variety of people that are looking for different things.

Some people enjoy songfics, some enjoy the troll parodies and some enjoy the script format. All of which violate the guidelines and all of which garner attention from specific groups. My point is, how much control does the site manager/moderators/whatever have? Yeah, they can delete stuff, but what is the point? It will eventually turn up again, all of it, and it will attract those people that originally enjoyed those type of fics all over again.

The only thing they are doing is upsetting users from wrongfully deleted fics and users that actually write the fics that violate the guidelines and giving power to groups like Critics Unite. CU serves little purpose besides openly insulting users that write things that get on their nerves and advertising fics they want to delete on their forums. It comes off as arrogant and gives the impression that they think they know what is best for a massive database of fics that entertain a massive userbase with a variety of tastes and skill for writing. I understand the need for critics, but not when these critics think that they need to just rip into people or think that they need to be on the frontlines of a fanfic purge that is better suited for the people that actually came up with the guidelines.

In my opinion, I think they just need to let sleeping dogs lie. These fics aren't hurting anything, they can be ignored and fanfic is deleting fics that really have no other place to go. What other fanfic database is known well enough to host more mature fics that don't have the reputation that sites like adultfanfic have? Why not just bring back the MA rating and have users submit their ages to use it? Place that screen depicting the laws you see on other more adult sites for underage users and all that.

This purge isn't going to do anything in the long run. CU thinks that they are doing something great, when in reality, several weeks from now, to maybe a few months, things will go back to just like they were before. Fanfic is a site with a very loose screening process. The "undesireables" that have CU's and fanfic.net's panties in a bunch will come back and all that effort will be for nothing until the next purge. So, what's the point? Just hit the back button....
