Finally got time to hit on the points I wanted to touch.

But, alas, that isn't really the case. I always feel sick once I've published and start worrying about whether people will hate it and whether I made mistakes. And usually I do wake up that night and think about all the little lore mistakes I made... No one's pointed anything out to me yet, so...

Oh man, I always feel like this whenever I post up chapters. I wait for that one review that tells me my story is terrible (It hasn't arrived so far but that doesn't mean it won't! Constant vigilance!), or that the story's become lacklustre, dragging, boring, predictable, etc.  I've only had one neutral or non-positive review so far where a reader informed me he couldn't stand my use of present tense =/ Other than that, it's been pretty supportive.

Incidentally, where is your fanfic? I don't see the link in your signature, and there's no AustereLemur799 on FFN...

And it was also the first time outside TR and Fallout that I'd played a game as a female protagonist - and a fully-scripted and customisable one at that!

Please tell me you like the original Fallout games by Interplay. Fallout 3 has some good things going for it in its own right, but it is very, very different from its predecessors. Fallout 2 is one of my favourite games to play. I have never laughed so hard during a video game run before that one.

Edit: WEIRD. Computer blew my message format out of control. Also, hello HYR 2.0. I don't think I've seen you before, so I welcome you to the board.

Does anyone else worry that parts of/flaws in their writing are overlooked because of other factors?

Yes. On balance, I think characterization is probably something that you would get called on, but the structure of writing, the style, the plot development…I think all of those do tend to get sidelined as concerns. That’s not a huge problem in itself—obviously, otherwise people would be complaining—unless you specifically want to work on those aspects. A beta or *cough* some kind of a support group might be helpful in that instead.

Another tricky thing is that if you tried to gauge reception based on the encouraging reviews…that doesn’t really work always either. The same person could write an equally gushy review about a story that I think is excellent, and some completely unstructured, somewhat poorly written one-shot.

Concrit is pretty rare, for me at least. Would be handy to have more, since I know I’m not really the best of writers. That said, I have received a few very good notes, some about small specifics and some about larger things (like the implied-only timeline in the early chapters—but that’s a conscious decision).

And that said, those “yay more!” reviews are quite happy-making too ^_^ It is, ultimately, about the story.

I’m not worried about that at all. I’m worried that I won’t get one when/if that happens :?

The lemur is a reclusive creature, its lair is a secret…nobody knows even though we keep trying :)

(Actually, I think lemurs are supposed to be fairly social…*goes to Wikipedia*)

…And to round out this morning of catching up, riffing off hot_heart’s question: the art of constructive criticism.

What to take note of, how to convey it, how to ensure it doesn’t come across too negative, and maybe importantly, how much to include speculation about plot direction and review of the arc and previous speculation.

And with that, I rush to work.

I still have fond memories trapped in the caves at the very beginning of the game, getting killed by rats all the time until I realised it was more like a chess game. Honestly, the music was actually what really made me fall in love with the Fallout series.

Incidentally I did actually create an account on FFN with the same username I have here, just because I absolutely had to leave a review for T.A. Blackwell on my brithday, and at the time reviews were restricted to users and not open to guests. But, yeah, my fanfic is published under a different pen name that has absolutely nothing to do with lemurs. It does have an animal in the name though Posted Image.

I'm not trying to be reclusive - well I am in that I'm shy. I hope you guys will understand that it took me several months to gain the confidence to publish in the first place. In fact I've been lurking on the BSN for nearly a year now, and only had the courage to sort out an account within the last couple of months. Even when I'd got it working; I took two weeks before I made my first post. And every time I make a post - whatever the topic may be - I faff around afterwards and over-analyse things and worry that I sound stupid Posted Image. Usually when this happens, I go away for a couple days and come back, hoping that people's memories are short! Posted Image

@ Spiritwolf

ME2 was my entrance to the series too. I think I played through it about four times until it really started bugging me when the likes of Garrus and co started talking about 'Ilos' and 'Sovereign' - so much so that I had to go and get the first game. ME1 is definitely my favourite but I don't think ME2 is awful like a lot of other people seem to think.

It’s OK if you don’t want to tell us—also OK if you do at some point <3

Conflicted. I wanted to write a chapter for tomorrow, but I have so much stuff to do…I could do it, but I probably shouldn’t.

Good time to try (and fail) getting one ahead again.

@AustereLemur799, take your time. Posted Image  You'll stride more adventurously and boldly eventually. I was very reclusive too. So much so that years later, my colleague candidly said she could hardly get anywhere with me initially. I was like a nut too tough to crack. Posted Image

ME1 is always my fav. followed by ME2. I played ME2 the most. Likely 20+ rounds compared to the 8 or 9 with ME1 because I enjoyed the comedy in some dialogues (Biotic GOD! That one had me in stitches), the biotic powers (I spent hours playing battle sequences over and over again, trying to gain the best effect. I really love to throw and see the baddies fly off. Ahhh, especially off the tower. And yes, I always fling Vasir up into the sky and it's hilarious sometimes to hear her utter threats even as she fell all the way down). And LotSB. My fav DLC of all time.

ME3 - once. Then again for the EC and no more.

Ahh, well, I got my fuel injectors fired up watching the B5 battle montage (I spent most of the early hours of the morning, dungeon whacking in GW2 and could barely pry my eyes apart. Hence, tiredness.). Never fails. I'll march to the last chapter. JMS never gave up and I shouldn't.

Footnote. Funny thing though. I'm a total duh when it comes to space battles. I always assumed ships just fired lasers on opposing ships, beat the crap out of them, planet surrenders. That's what always happened in the old movies.

Mass drivers. That was the first I heard of them. So I was utterly shocked when I saw those Centauri cruisers launched rock after rock onto the planet surface. What no lasers? Super weapon? Out the window they went. Planet killer? Ok, nothing can beat the Shadow planetkiller; it tears the planet from the inside out. No need for super phaser thingymungy whatever. Burrowing missiles will do it.

Londo had vented his spleen; he wanted to see the Narns stomped into the ground, Never to rise again. But his face. His face when he watched those cruisers doing exactly what he wanted at last....he found he did not want it at all. That moment of truth, he found he could hardly bear it and he knew he had damned himself to the dark, for what he had done. Sometimes I wonder if he remembered what the technomage had said to him;

I see millions crying out your name.

My followers?

Your victims.

Write like JMS, I'll never be able to. But I can try to emulate him in pale shadow. And yes, I still want to pilot a Starfury. Posted Image  Best space fighter that flies like one though I should think were I to spin like some of the pilots did in the shots, I would black out from the G-forces.

I won't pretend to understand any of that, but it was cool nonetheless Posted Image.

And, thanks, guys. My fic is out there somewhere. That's enough for me.

Babylon 5, people! Narns are the vaguely reptilian-looking people, centauri the ones with the dumb hair.

I think I've seen the series through so many times, yet the first thing that ever pops into my head regarding babylon 5 was that black market praying mantis-like dealer who had pretty exceptionally high prices, because everything was always "Expensssivve"

After that, I recall the first human captain guy. He was fun. Everything else kind of blurs into a hazy memory of the show...

Quick question: how do you describe the movement of a Reaper husk? :P

Awkward gallop? Creepy jog? Hunched sprint? Help plx!

Those three work, but if I'm trying to be concise, I use shamble. Since they have an awkward gait, anything strange will do

Hmm, shamble sounds more like shuffling to me, like slow zombies.

I was actually thinking gait, but I used it a couple of paragraphs before when referring to Miranda (I'm that fussy).

Funny thing is, I think they're just doing the normal human run animation already mocked by so many.

p.s. 'creepy jog' cracks me up. Here come the creepy joggers!

I don't really think all that descriptively regarding Husks. I think they shamble or stagger when they're walking, but I always pictured them as performing a "reckless sprint" when they actually run. I just always pictured them as having a single thought: Get to the target as fast as possible.

With Husks it depends whether you're talking about ME1&2 Husks or ME3 ones, because the latter definitely move faster and different from the former.

Lurching, reckless, feral, predatory, frantic... all descriptors that work well for husks. Shamble and shuffle work more for when they're not in 'rage zombie mode'.

This has been brought up in other forums, but it feels a little suspicious that these two founders are stepping down months after the ME3 ending debacle. That and the recent lay-offs at Bioware (or so says one of the lead writers of Dragon Age). I'm think internal pressure from EA, maybe?

Or I could be paranoid. I'm due for a bout anyways.

As in dialogue in your story? Or really meaningful, profound speeches?
