However, my point is: yes, there are some horrible fics out there that barely qualify as such, but what ultimate harm are they commiting?
They take space, but that’s not really a concern for anyone but those who run the site.

What's the concern there, though? Apparently, they get advertisements on that site like nothing else. Conceivably, they could make enough money off of those that space would not be a great concern.

Anyone know what's going on at fanfiction . net? Is the site really going to remove stories that are too sexual/violent? If true, that's disturbing, but I also pity the person who has to sift through all the zillions of stories on that site

There is this fanfiction called Dark Energy by Melaradark and it is one excellent piece of Mass Effect fanfiction. http://www.fanfictio...3401/Melaradark
I might start reading it because it seems to be very popular - but since it's pretty long, I have to ask whether it is related to the original Dark Energy plot that was supposed to be the ending of Mass Effect 3?lillitheris wrote...

The Dark Energy series is fantastic. If you’re looking for stuff to read, there’s a bunch in the ALL The Fanfics thread (see my signature)

Also, anybody dislike all the new changes they made to FFN these last couple of days? Wonder whether there's an option to go back to the old layout.

Thanks, guys - I'll look it up, then, though I'm not a fan of Renegade Shepard and especially not one that romances Liara - I just don't see it happening. The author might have made it believable, of course.

A group called Critics United are apparently going around and reporting (and in most cases 'critiquing' and I use that term loosely for some of the reviews I've seen) fics that don't adhere to FF.net's Terms Of Service.
Make sure your fics are backed up and I have AO3 invites if anyone needs them.

Critics United? That's a misnomer if ever there was one.

But sounds better than Pedants, Fascists, Killjoys and Bullies?
...Actually I like the sound of that better.
I suppose I can agree with this:)MidnightRaith wrote...
However, my point is: yes, there are some horrible fics out there that barely qualify as such, but what ultimate harm are they commiting? I see horrible fics all the time, and some are those you used as examples. But, I can spot these fics at just their summaries or looking at their word length. If I did end up clicking on the fic, then I can really spot it for what it is within the first few lines. Then, I click the back button and I never come across those specific fics again. I don't give them the time of day. What is preventing this group from doing the same? To be honest, I don't see what purpose the guidelines fanfic have now. It's turned into a huge database that can be used by a variety of people that are looking for different things.
Some people enjoy songfics, some enjoy the troll parodies and some enjoy the script format. All of which violate the guidelines and all of which garner attention from specific groups. My point is, how much control does the site manager/moderators/whatever have? Yeah, they can delete stuff, but what is the point? It will eventually turn up again, all of it, and it will attract those people that originally enjoyed those type of fics all over again.
The only thing they are doing is upsetting users from wrongfully deleted fics and users that actually write the fics that violate the guidelines and giving power to groups like Critics Unite. CU serves little purpose besides openly insulting users that write things that get on their nerves and advertising fics they want to delete on their forums. It comes off as arrogant and gives the impression that they think they know what is best for a massive database of fics that entertain a massive userbase with a variety of tastes and skill for writing. I understand the need for critics, but not when these critics think that they need to just rip into people or think that they need to be on the frontlines of a fanfic purge that is better suited for the people that actually came up with the guidelines.
In my opinion, I think they just need to let sleeping dogs lie. These fics aren't hurting anything, they can be ignored and fanfic is deleting fics that really have no other place to go. What other fanfic database is known well enough to host more mature fics that don't have the reputation that sites like adultfanfic have? Why not just bring back the MA rating and have users submit their ages to use it? Place that screen depicting the laws you see on other more adult sites for underage users and all that.
This purge isn't going to do anything in the long run. CU thinks that they are doing something great, when in reality, several weeks from now, to maybe a few months, things will go back to just like they were before. Fanfic is a site with a very loose screening process. The "undesireables" that have CU's and fanfic.net's panties in a bunch will come back and all that effort will be for nothing until the next purge. So, what's the point? Just hit the back button....

Unf, I have a line that is just…so on the nose it’s almost groan-territory. I swear, I didn’t actually plan the whole convergence of events just to use the line, it just happened. It works beautifully, but I’m concerned that it might seem too deliberate and thereby cheapen the actual events themselves.
Anyone who’s at least ~10 chapters into “Unity” or doesn’t care about possible spoilers up for review? This is literally one line of dialogue (plus a little background).
