I'm not sure which I prefer from FF.net now: a review or an alert subscription.

With a review, you get to know what they liked or what they didn't. With an alert you know you've made them hungry for more, so you must be doing something right but not specifically why.

Although at the moment, I have one with 0 reviews but with alerts.  Hmm.

I'm still quite new to all this, so any thoughts anyone?

I value both for similar reasons. Feedback lets me know what people think of my story, and can offer advice. Alerts let me know for sure that someone is keeping track of my story and not just reading it once.

Both are nice. ^_^

Not much to say right now, aside from that I really don't like writing my characters into painful situations. I keep getting this antsy kind of writers' block where I know exactly what to write and how to write it, but I'm just like "Oh man, poor _____. Why am I doing this to them? :( "

Been trying to finish this chapter for three hours and I can't seem to eke out those final words at a decent pace. Just frustrating. Earlier today I wrote some lighter stuff for later in another chapter to get my mind off it, but despite the progress there, it hasn't helped much. : I mean, my Shep wasn't going to have the most tragic life anyway, but I know there will be parts in the future where I'll balk like today.

Anyone else struggle with this, or am I just crazy? :wizard:

You are not crazy.

The writing process for me is really just me taking notes as the characters share what happened to them. Very rarely do I feel that I'm in control and if I try and take control then writing becomes a miserable thing. Nope, the characters are in complete frackin' control for the most part with me playing secretary and editor.

If the character shares a dark part of their story then I'm really careful that I don't break that trust. They are sharing painful events in a completely raw and open way ... so it's important to understand what should and should not be shared with the reader. That's probably why those chapters can take so long to draft, edit and publish.

So again, you are not crazy ... but I am. Image IPB

So I've been toying with a few ideas to help promote my fic, to help make it into a really unique and striking experience, and I had an idea to try and get some additional content created for it. I've been hoping and asking for fanart for some time now, to no avail, but now I've started pondering doing something else. I want to create sort of 'audio trailers' for some of the members of my fic's squad, much like the Fight For The Lost trailers for ME2, as a way to give a teaser of the fic and give a small glimpse of the characters (specifically Jorall, Revenant, Jano and Delexia so far). I'm hoping I might find some people in the community to help me do this.

Do you think that this kind of thing is a good idea? What kind of additional content would you like to see created for your work, if any?

I don’t really have much set yet, so at this point — aside from my tentative “Adventures of Nought and Vega”-spinoff —  I can really only imagine some relevant art that I’d love to see. I can think of two scenes involving krogans that might make good images, at least.

Audio/visual trailers would be awesome.

Slowly but surely getting through chapter 2. I think I'll finally have enough time to sit down and get it done now that I'm off for a few days after my tongue surgery.... This one went much better and I'm not as grouchy, so I don't think my irritation will trickle into my writing.

Just trying to wrap my head around the organization of the System's Alliance military ranks and command structure. Noticed that some ranks are new and some are from real world militaries. Wonder if anyone could help with these questions:

1. Who is the commanding officer of a company?
2. Who is the commanding officer of a platoon?
3. Are companies named or numbered?
4. Are platoon named or numbered?

Any help would be appreciated

Things may vary depending on the country

1. The CO of the company is Captain/Major
2. The CO of the platoon is a 2nd Leitenant/1st Lieutenant
3. Companies usually have letters like A, B, C or Z. If you use the NATO phonetic alphabet then it's Alpha, Bravo, Charlie or Zulu company respectively.
4. Platoons are usually numbered and tied to their companies. E.g. Charlie company 2nd platoon.

Edit: Should specify that this is information from in-universe.

Regarding questions one and two:
Provided he survived Virmire, Kaidan Alenko is promoted to Major before ME3 and he leads 1st Special Operations Biotic Company {source), so I would guess that a Major leads a company.

Regarding questions three and four:
From what I can pull from the Mass Effect Wiki here, division, brigade and regiment are numbered. And from the article on war assets here we have a unit (of unspecified size) of engineers referred to as Team Zeta. From the wording I would guess that the team is somewhere between a squad and a platoon in size, but that's just speculation on my part. So far as I recall, there is no evidence of named companies or platoons in the games or novels. But no-one really talks about ground troops because you spent so much time on board a ship.

Hope it helps.

OK you guys so the first part of my new fic is up,  its the first thing I've written in about a month so please be gentle (jk be as mean as you want as long as its constructive).  This part takes place on Therum during the battle/escape of Shepard and co from the volcano and geth.  the next few parts should be up in the coming days.  well here it is

as always comments and critiques are appreciated and as not to further alienate or reignite a feud with PMC there are no blue baby's anywhere near this fic although if you want you can read my fic "Daddy's Little Girls" and get a childs version of this battle.:P

Just going to drop in here, I've got a question.

Anyone have any idea how turian names work? I'm trying to find some good ones. They seem Roman, so should I just look up Latin names?

Have you done any writing before???

If you don't have a system that you normally use I normally keep a notbook with me and jot down ideas as they pop in my head and then organize them and flesh them out later.  Or i write the begining of a story and then finish it later.  whatever you do though don't write a set ending first because normally atleast for me it tends to bite you in the ass

Yeah, I've done a fair amount of original fiction and nonfiction. For a bit, that was my primary support.

I guess I'm not used to... actually out and out playing in someone else's sandbox. I keep starting and then being like "wait, maybe this is wrong."

That's actually the best part about writing fanfiction. Who cares if its wrong, as long as it feels right to you. Its not like anyone is trying to profit off of their fanfiction, there really is no wrong. Especially in a fanfic about something like Mass Effect were Bioware has pretty much left so much wide open for the author to work with. Barring the fact you have to ignore a lot of the bad decisions they've made :)

well you can put your own oc's in if you want,  and Shepards are basically blank templates for you to create, the only one's you have to worry about are existing characters and as long as you stay in character its all good.  examples being that Garrus is loyal, sarcastic, funny, and basically a more humorful batman,  but he also looks up to Shep in ME and by the time ME3 comes around he views Shep as a best friend and a brother probably closer than he views most of his other Turians.

Tali on the other hand is extremely impulsive due to her age (she's only like 20 by the time ME comes around)   and acts accordingly to what you'd expect someone with a genius level intelligence and the impulse control of a teenager would act.  She has her moments where her intelligence shines through but when she speaks and in most of her dialogue options she acts off of her emotions, whether it be anger and sadness at confronting her dad's dead body or concern that Shepard doesn't view her as attractive because the first time they met she was essentially a damsel in distress and the fact that Quarian physiology has made it impossible for Shep to even see her physically.  He doesn't know what she looks like and like any young lady is concerned that he won't find her physically attractive.  She tends to hide those fears and insecurities behind sarcasm also like you'd expect of a teenager/young adult.

I can go on about each of the characters but then the post would probably take up a page.  all you have to remember is just keep those characters true when you write if you include them and that you follow some established timeline if your story takes place in game.   If it doesn't than you have basically a blank slate to write the story and characters like anything else with the only real difference being that the basic setting and environment has already been set.  ME isn't like Star Wars or Star Trek yet where you have detailed timelines of events going back and forward thousands of years in the respective universes

edit:  ninja'ed :bandit:  but rwill is right, fan fic is basically just having fun, its a way for fans to express their feelings for a character/s  or universe,  we don't do it for profit.  Plus its good practice for regular writing also.  I've been writing fiction since i was in 8th grade and I've found that writing fan fic has improved my other efforts drastically just because it's given me the opportunity to not worry about creating a original setting so that i can just worry about fleshing out this character or working on how i use description.

The important part is that if you're doing fanfiction (let's just assume mass Effect here), that you have an understanding of the characters. I can tell you that I've read over 50 Liara/Femshep fics, and there are always differences in each Liara, to a degree, but the games...they give you enough to work off of. Shepard's pretty much free game. You can do almost anything with Shep. :) Just, get to know the characters well, if you haven't, and work off that(if you're doing a fic based within the series's main timeline)

I was a bit hesitant to dig in at first, but then I figured that I love the series dearly, and I wanted to expand on it. Yeah I'm taking some liberties with stuff that doesn't matter, that's not wrong. It's part of the fun, really, because everyone experiences the series differently, even if there are a lot of similarities.

Try your hand, if you feel like you want to write. I think you'll be surprised at how difficult it is to screw up.^_^

It's honestly Shepard who scares me most. Renegade or paragon, the game gives parameters and lines. That, and getting started. When I'm doing an article or a short story, the outlines are a bit different from fanfiction, and I have to confess, my familiarity with the community is almost nonexistent.

just write it how you play your shep,  I'm guessing you don't play as a pure paragon or renegade but a mix of both.   if your Shep is more on the paragon scale just make sure he/she doesn't do anything completely ruthless, and vice versa if you play mostly renegade just don't have your shep do any candy cane and unicorn nice guy stuff.  most of us use our sheps somewhere in the middle.  and even with those guidelines there is still enough that isn't fleshed out that you can make shepard your own.  Shepard could have been a space brat or a colonist kid but how were they raised before they joined the allliance,  What was Shep like before the Batarian's burned her home to the ground.  none of that is ever explained.

as for your familiarity with the community don't sweat it most of us are pretty agreeable and nice folk with a few bad eggs here and there that tend to try and ruin things.  We really won't destroy you unless you take one of the established NPC's/squaddies and flay their characters when you write.  as long as your shep isn't on one extreme or a mary sue you'll be fine:D

Well, don't worry too much about Paragon/Renegade aside from which dialogue options you want your Shepard to say(if you decide to use the ones from the game). The reactions to those satements and what dialogue to decide to place between each line (if you choose to) is your call. It's your Shepard. Most people who write about in-game events take liberties with what goes on, often deviating from the in-game sequence of events and style of dialogue to offer up a more fluid, interesting story. Don't feel like you're trapped by the game because the only dialogue options given in the game don't resemble anything your character would say...or that any action dead-set in the game would resemble something your character would do. Some of the better fanfic writers(for Mass Effect, at least) have tweaked events to their will, and have managed to provide compelling stories because of it. (See PMC's "The Shepherdess and the Questing Beast", Salser's "Nova et Vetera", or so many others who have made changes)
The important thing is staying true to the characters, letting readers know what to expect from your story, and (and this is my personal rule) not using self-inserts in your fic :)

As for getting started, I can't say for sure, but start with the templates. Figure out what interests you, or what you chose in the game, and work from there. If you've ever fleshed a character out for a pen and paper RPG, you'll know the drill on what questions to ask this Shepard of yours. If you haven't, or are looking for a quick list of questions, here's a link to 100 questions. Some won't apply, but many will. By the time you've answered half of them, you'll know your character pretty well. Jot notes down on things they enjoyed as a child, jotnotes of fond memories, of bad memories, of pivotal moments in her/his life.

I mean, I'm a bit loopy, but I have conversations with myself when I'm struggling a bit (I'm an auditory learner like Mordin, and often have to talk out loud to figure things out...drives my riend's batty), one part playing narrator, one part playing Shepard, and I find I can get in character better that way.

Taking that foundation, I decided to write an origin story for my Shep. Most start at ME1, ME2 or ME3, or Post-ME3. Really, it's your call. Just don't be scared to explore, to ask questions. I'd like to think we can be a kind, helpful bunch :innocent:

Shepard is actually the easiest for me to write, since the very nature of Shepard's character allows for a degree of self insertion (At least in regards to spoken dialogue).

It's only when people assassinate or otherwise botch established characters that it pisses me off.
