It's honestly Shepard who scares me most. Renegade or paragon, the game gives parameters and lines. That, and getting started. When I'm doing an article or a short story, the outlines are a bit different from fanfiction, and I have to confess, my familiarity with the community is almost nonexistent.
Well, don't worry too much about Paragon/Renegade aside from which dialogue options you want your Shepard to say(if you decide to use the ones from the game). The reactions to those satements and what dialogue to decide to place between each line (if you choose to) is your call. It's your Shepard. Most people who write about in-game events take liberties with what goes on, often deviating from the in-game sequence of events and style of dialogue to offer up a more fluid, interesting story. Don't feel like you're trapped by the game because the only dialogue options given in the game don't resemble anything your character would say...or that any action dead-set in the game would resemble something your character would do. Some of the better fanfic writers(for Mass Effect, at least) have tweaked events to their will, and have managed to provide compelling stories because of it. (See PMC's "The Shepherdess and the Questing Beast", Salser's "Nova et Vetera", or so many others who have made changes)
The important thing is staying true to the characters, letting readers know what to expect from your story, and (and this is my personal rule) not using self-inserts in your fic

As for getting started, I can't say for sure, but start with the templates. Figure out what interests you, or what you chose in the game, and work from there. If you've ever fleshed a character out for a pen and paper RPG, you'll know the drill on what questions to ask this Shepard of yours. If you haven't, or are looking for a quick list of questions,
here's a link to 100 questions. Some won't apply, but many will. By the time you've answered half of them, you'll know your character pretty well. Jot notes down on things they enjoyed as a child, jotnotes of fond memories, of bad memories, of pivotal moments in her/his life.
I mean, I'm a bit loopy, but I have conversations with myself when I'm struggling a bit (I'm an auditory learner like Mordin, and often have to talk out loud to figure things out...drives my riend's batty), one part playing narrator, one part playing Shepard, and I find I can get in character better that way.
Taking that foundation, I decided to write an origin story for my Shep. Most start at ME1, ME2 or ME3, or Post-ME3. Really, it's your call. Just don't be scared to explore, to ask questions. I'd like to think we can be a kind, helpful bunch :innocent:
