Ugh. I'm sorry to hear about the writer's block, Spirit. That always sucks. But I do wonder, how come writers are the only ones that get a mental block that messes up their profession? You never hear about Doctor's Block, or Carpenter's Block... Posted Image

I think most people who are in semi-creative professions get the same sort of thing from time to time.  :P  It just doesn't have its own special term (possibly because they're NOT writers..? hehe)  I spent a good part of today beating my head against a problem at work and all I have to show for it is "it doesn't work, nobody knows why, witchcraft maybe".

I've found writer's block specifically is either a) I'm too tired or stressed to focus, or B) my ideas need more time to mature before I can turn them into actual writing.

Alternatively:

'There's no such thing as writer's block. It's simply you judging your own work. Allow yourself to write crap: a necessary part of writing.'

Not that I would suggest this in certain professional capacities...

Yeah, I've heard that one before too and I agree with it- but to me writer's block is I CAN'T write, not I don't FEEL like writing, and I'm more the latter than the former when my general opinion is "gosh, I suck".  :P

Is a musicians' writer's block the same? I get that sometimes.

I would say that any form of mental block which prevents the generation of content in a creative context could be deemed similar. Writer's block, painter's block, composer's block etc. You're trying to do something creative and are (for whatever reason) unable/unwilling to?

I could have done a pm. I think I did in Origins, then I thought doing one here but I didn't think that would work either.

Confused, chaps? To state clearly, I have apparently offended someone here in this thread. In all honesty, I can't remember what I said though we were talking about fanfictions. All I remembered was I put in quite a number of "lols", disbelief, bad comments <-- very likely, on a raised subject. Maybe I'm boring, an idiot. Whatever. Well, let me put it out here:

I am sorry, I didn't mean to. This is the last time I'm going to say it.

I'd like to think that there's a wonderful bit of flexibility online, where you can (even if for a moment) step away from real life issues directly, and express yourself in ways that aren't available to you normally. I don't think that's a bad thing.

If you said some bad stuff, you've owned up to it. It was unfortunate, but you're not brushing it off. Don't be too hard on yourself about WHY you did that, because those kind of things happen when stress bottles up like that, when it's so overwhelming.

Just try not to be too hard on yourself, you're going through a trying time. I'll naively hope things get better for you. Not much else I can say

Agreed. I know artists who have this problem too. I was mostly joking, trying to lighten the mood because writer's block truly is a frustrating thing. Been there, and not looking forward to the inevitable return... because it always comes back.

I am sorry, I didn't mean to. This is the last time I'm going to say it. Take it or leave it.

What're my excuses? Blatently, different cultures and that I am now "housebound" for quite a few years now. It doesn't mean I'm handicapped. It meant I am filling out my filial duty. I left my job, my friends and I do not meet for fun any more, we hardly meet. I don't go on vacations.

My filial duty requires me to be on call 24/7. I have someone to help out but I am still the one who has the outmost responsibility. My days are filled with nothing but duty, I converse, eat and sleep with duty who is no longer capable of a normal life. I watch her dwindle year after year. She is my chain, my burden to bear. I hate her and yet I also love her. As a child, I nearly died from her foolishness. I know what it is like to be hungry, to be forbidden but the barest because all good things must be given over to my brothers who are the light in her eyes. That is all water under the bridge now. This is a story shared by many others, I am not unique.

And yes, I'm ****ty alone. I can share my thoughts with no one. I let them out in the games I play. I raged in the loud music I play. I talk **** in the posts I made online, the real person I am don't even vocalise very much except when necessary.. I try not to step on the toes of other people. Offense is not my motto.

I'm not looking for sympathy. I'm frankly just tired. My ventures are not very good so I'm halting it now. Thanks for reading.

End of line.

I understand your situation to a lesser degree, I left my job to care for an ailing set of grandparents for just over half a year (this was a while ago, about three years now). Spent that time in a small house with the two of them, no friends for a number of kilometers, very little space for anything of my own, and I had no transportation. Isolation's not really a great thing, whether it's social or physical or emotional or what have you. It was a mentally and emotionally draining process, and if I didn't have the internet (on wonderful 56k dialup modem speeds) I probably would have gone insane. So I don't blame you that whatever happened came to a head as it did, especially that your living situation has lasted YEARS. Not something I can really fathom.

If you said some bad stuff, you've owned up to it. It was unfortunate, but you're not brushing it off. Don't be too hard on yourself about WHY you did that, because those kind of things happen when stress bottles up like that, when it's so overwhelming.

While I have nothing constructive to offer on this particular issue, I just wanted to second Fluffy on the well-wishes. Hopefully things will improve for you.

First, I will apologize for the three consecutive posts. I know some people frown on that, but I thought it would be more manageable than one really long post...

So now, a question: The wiki for Quarians says that they have "extensive cybernetic augmentation" beneath their suits. Does anyone know if this was confirmed in the books or in the codex somewhere? Because I always figured they had some implants and the like to interface with their suit's systems, which I assume is what the lines depicted in their skin after the reveal of their appearance were supposed to be. But I find myself wondering just how extensive is "extensive". Any thoughts on the matter or actual info from the books/games?

Having read the 3 Karpashyn books, I can say that Quarian cybernetic augmentation is not mentioned in any significant way. Like you I just assumed that the lines in the Tali-photo were cybernetics.

Okay. Just wanted to make sure I wouldn't be going all anti-canon if I assumed that the limits of their cybernetics were related to links with the suit for health monitoring, nerve manipulation, metabolic functions and so forth. It may or may not become an issue for my fic, but if it does, I'd hate to veer too far off established lore.

Funny thing happened. Glad it did actually. Couldn't sleep, or rather having a restless sleep. I woke up sat in my chair this morning before I got ready for work. It hit me...as it played out in my head... images and actions...just going with it to see where it takes me. I had a plot going for Miranda Lawson in my fic that I didn't have any idea how I was going to resolve but it came to me after several weeks of thinking and waiting. haha. A good page almost two of just the main points but can add more details later. At least it's something to work with for resolution of a plot that I had brewing. Yay... I'd give more detail but can't. :)

Randomly, have taking faaar long that I would have liked I have managed to work in 'Death and I have established an equitable working relationship' line in my latest chapter.

I feel accomplished :D

But I can't remember who came up with it originally to credit'em. So speak up.

hey, i was thinking of doing a part fic called SE characters. this would introduce the characters of the story once they have shown, and would allow a more intricate background for them.

anyone think its a good idea?

also, anyone have any idea how long the reaper wars are? (this is so i have an idea of where the guys are and when, and also because it feels like a few days when playing, but whe shepard talks to hackett the first time you get off the citadel, hackett says, and i quote, "we only lost earth a few weeks back." this is confusing me slightly, and i would appreciate help)

Well, keep in mind that while travel between relays is supposed to be more or less instantaneous, travel from a relay system to another system at FTL could take a bit of time... hours or even days, and there's a lot of intersystem travel to gather all the assets. Also, think of the crucible and how gigantic that thing is... It would take a fair bit of time to build. I personally have been operating on the assumption that the war lasted 6 months at minimum, and probably a heck of a lot longer. I just can't see them building the Crucible... even with a ton of people working on it... in just a week or two.
