Ah, nothing like taking a small break from my proposal, sitting in my computer chair eating fruit salad. Mmmm cherries and peaches and pears, oh my!

Interesting looking show, that Last Resort. Many familiar faces! Might have to sneak a peek.

Have to thank drussius for the idea of taking an hour or two off last night. Got enough writing done to make me confident that I can get another chapter out by next saturday. Not bad! Though I'm a bit behind on my proposal. :\\ No worries, it'll get done soon enough.

Anywho, back to the fight! Good luck everyone!

Haven't posted in here for a while. I've been hopelessly slack lately. Very busy at work and then, as experience has taught me, I've jumped at any chance for socialising (gets harder as you get older).

Anyway, hope everyone's writing is ticking along well. Currently, I'm struggling with writing a knock-down, drag-out brawl between Kai Leng and Miranda but trying not to go overboard with the brutality. I think you can get away with a certain amount of 'uncomfortable' reading (I dabbled with it in chapter sixteen), but there is a risk of looking like a sadist...or is it masochist when it's first-person? =p

For discussion's sake, has anyone attempted a similar sort of thing, or included a fight where their main character essentially loses? I'd be interested in reading any such stuff if people have links.

I've done it before, but not in anything I've published. I think every good hero needs to have their backside handed to them now and then. Infallible heroes just aren't very interesting. As far as my current fic, the poor cast of my story has been injured, beaten, kidnapped, starved and otherwise abused for many Chapters now. And in one Chapter one of the asari was beaten by a pair of Cerberus goons. Though I wouldn't have really called it a fight. More of a called bluff.

But while there is definitely a thing as being too graphic with unpleasant subject matter, it's also a subjective line. Some people love gore, brutality and all manner of horror in their entertainment. And some call it offensive. Just look at the divide between horror movie buffs and their critics. But then, maybe I'm on the wrong side of the line. My readers might just tell you I'm a sadist. Posted Image

@Spirit: Sorry to hear about your computer woes. Hope you get it fixed soon!

@Everyone: Happy Halloween... a day early. Or if you don't celebrate it, then Happy Tuesday! On time. Posted Image

Hey everyone,

I was asked to post this on behalf of a friend. This story is not mine, it's written by FC_Paragon (she is voicing the FemShep in my MEEM mod) who has got some trouble posting in these forums.
It's a Miranda-Shepard story.
Enjoy:

I love computer repair, I took the computer in 2 days ago and told them the hard rive was cacked. Now after two days of diagnostics they are able to tell me the hard drive is cacked, now I have to wait another for them to replace it.

That's ludicrous. It takes less than five minutes to swap hard drives, usually (and I'm being very generous here). Less than ten to swap laptop HDDs and more annoying pre-built towers like Compaqs that tend to box all their components in with a steel , welded cage.

It doesn't take a day. If it's a desktop, and there's normal access to the computer components, I could do that in just over a minute. At most.

This is like when people go to computer shops when a virus is on their computer and they want it removed. Two or three days later, they're told they had to wipe the hard-drive and do a fresh install, and they charge 50 or 60 dollars. Anyone can do a fresh install. Most pre-builts have a one or two click program that does it for them, or if they have the actual windows disk, all they have to do is either try repairing the windows install, or delete the partition and make a new one. The menus are usually incredibly simple, and it's pretty fool proof.

Sometimes, I think computer repair shops are good, because some people just can't wrap their minds around the more complex failures and error that can happen on PCs. But I figure a large part of their income comes from cheap, simple fixes like this that take such little effort, and that would make people a lot less antsy with computers if they knew the process.

Case in point, my dad is not technologically literate. He is the kind of person who, when wanting to search up a local racetrack, he types in the address bar something like "What are the hours of the shannonville raceway on Wednesdays, or if you could tell me the hours on saturdays that would be nice too" and fully expects accurate results. He's told me for years that he couldn't possibly learn to put together or fix a computer. So when I was on school break, I lugged my tower with my on the train and popped by his place, and took everything apart. Then I gave him the manual, and I walked him through it. After thirty five or so minutes, he had put it all together and understood why everything went where it did, and now if he has a hardware problem, he knows how to diagnose it and buy a replacement part, instead of waiting a week or more for some shop to fix it and overcharge him.

Sorry for the rant, I get really angry when I hear computer repair people screwing people around like they have with you, it just pisses me off. They're providing a service for the convenience of computer owners, usually doing something with a very low learning curve. They should at least respect the customer enough to treat them well and be honest. You come to them and say your hard drive is dead? They should run a check on it, which takes up to about two hours depending on how thorough they're being, what the state of the drive is, and what tools they're using. If they find it's bricked completely and unrecoverable, open up a new equivalent hard drive and install it. Check to see if the system's running properly, charge for the cost of the hard drive and the cost of labour, and send you on your way maybe later on that day, or the next day at the very latest.

UGH.

Well the worse part is I could have replaced the hard drive myself, I have done so several times in the past, but this was under warranty.

Haha, oh jeez. I grew up in Trenton (I can still smell Dom-Tar if I focus hard enough). Belleville's an alright place. I think the city hotel's kind of been revamped, last I heard, and Slasher Pam's not all over the place like she used to be. And you've got good hockey (former bulls season ticket holder here :D ) and the quinte mall is alright (though bulk barn's moving...lame). Decent place. Affordable housing. better than Trenton :D

And ah, yes, warranties. That's kind of lame. If it's through a futureshop or best buy, they should be better at that, but chances are they're kinda lazy and don't pay much attention.

Reid's Dairy....delicious :)

Now I want ice-cream. <_< But if I go get ice-cream, I'll lose a half hour that I could be studying for. And if i do that, then I will have a half hour less of free-writing time tonight...maybe I'll just have some grapes instead.

Anywho, hope they speed up and get you your computer back soon :)

To play devil's advocate though, that assumes that the computer shop has absolutely no other work that they need to do.

Most I've been in and around have at least three people on staff. The good thing about diagnosing computer parts is that for some things, it's really quick (power supplies ar epretty quick to check), and some parts take a while (in which case, you run the tools and let it do its thing, freeing you up for other work).

I've never known a shop that actively saves what's on a person's hard drive if they bring it in with a virus or whatever. Pretty much every one I've known and/or worked at looks at it, sees if it's something they can fix in under five or ten minutes, and if not, they wipe it clean, which again, takes maybe five minutes to start up.
The majority of the stuff I saw while working at one were quick things like that. I stood around twiddling my thumbs for usually half my shift, and we got regular business. The excuse to wait a day or so between handing them back their computer was usuall so that it wouldn't "mess with whatever plans they already have today/tonight". Those kind of excuses.
And then you get the crazy markup that some place on OEM power supplies. I've seen $60 corsair PSUs marked up at $100 due to the brand, even though it's their lowest end model that's made with some of the worst parts on the market, and isn't even worth the regular $60 sticker price. They're like "Oh, this is Corsair, they're great." and probably less than a year later, that PSU's fried half their system, and they need to come back and get new parts.

Even today, there are so many computer owners who don't know a thing about how to run them well, and kind of like how mechanics screw people around using this lack of public knowledge, so do computer shops.

I'm sure some out there are great, run by really nice, helpful people who don't waste people's time or try to really rip them off. I know businesses need to make a living, and it can be hard in the service industry, but some of the stuff computer shops get away with absolutely baffles me.

I know everything about computers. My CTU is like a Pentagon 3.0 or something, and I have 800 gigglebites of Rum. My graphics card is an Ace of Spades, since that's like... the best card in the deck. And my internet connection thing is capable of downloading at speeds of at least one minibyte per hour! My knowledge of these advanced typing machines is awesome! Posted Image

No, seriously though, I'm one of those people who knows jack about computers, so thankfully I have a friend who used to repair them for a living. Sort of like I take my car to my friend who is a mechanic. Because you're absolutely right. Both of the aforementioned friends admit that when dealing with people who don't know what they're doing, the companies they work(ed) for are only too happy to take exorbitant amounts of money for the least possible amount of expense/work.

I'm lucky I suppose that I build my own PCs and know what's what, and usually have a few spares if anything goes critical.

XD I couldn't help but laugh. pentagon/Gigglebites/Ace of Spades, best card in the deck XD

Ahhhhh. Good stuff. Don't blame you (or anyone else) for not knowing about computers. I'm just happy you aren't getting fleeced a bunch. Though I do hope that your friend gets some compensation :P I remember as a kid, I was ****d out to my whole neighbourhood whenever computer problems happened (which was often) and I was never ever given anything for it. Spent hours upon hours upon hours setting people's whole networks up, building their computers, troubleshooting issues and teaching them how to avoid them...then returning when they made the same mistakes later on...wasn't ever given anything in return. I mean, it's still work, right? It's still labour. Just because I don't have a boss paying me to do it under some business structure doesn't mean it's not valuable work.

So please, think of the children! (or in this case, the computer guy :P) A "thanks" is certainly nice to recieve, but a pizza can be really great after tech adventures. :P Even if it's just sometimes Or even once in a blue moon, because I know how tough things can get financially. (not assuming you don't help the guy out, or that there's no arrangement between you two, just stating this in general, based on my personal experiences). It's like christmas, it's the thought that counts.

Because while computer stores rip people off and that's a pet peeve of mine, it's also a pet peeve to be exploited as "expected" free labour. Grinds my gears when I hear people say "Oh yeah, i've got a buddy who'll fix my computer for free." I mean, i'll fix my friend's stuff for free sometimes in good faith, but if they come to me with the same problem later on, after I've taken the time to teach them how to avoid it, or how to fix it themselves, I generally ask for food in return (I'm a university student, food is the greatest currency I know right now). I figure it's a fair tradeoff.

Aye. I've got spare parts galore from older builds in a cabinet. Always good for when a part fails, or someone needs a replacement part urgently. Nice to have that little safety net.
