I started learning a little bit about components way back in the 90s when a friend helped to set up my first DIY rig so I know how to make sure I get the right hardware and change them out. I'm a total dud when it comes to software, which I leave to the techs.

So far, through the years, breakdown has always been either the graphic card (played too many games! :P ),  the power supply (hit by lightning, my friend's error in connections and recently, I found that the current rig is actually sporting a pwr supply meant for servers  and the jacks incorrectly connected to the graphic card) or the optical drive.

When in trouble, I now call in two techs whose business is to solve pc problems, etc. Saved me alot of time running around. ;)

In all seriousness, I'm one of those guys that expects my friends to do things without pay. But before anyone calls me a jerk, it's an understanding between us. We get things done for each other in exchange for other favors, so it's a trade. I drywalled my buddy's kids' room, I helped him to redo his floors in the dining room, etc. In exchange he helps when something goes wrong with my computer. It's a fair trade.

See, that's cool. Mutual help is a nice thing, and it's good when people can use their skills to help each other when needed. :) I'm just jaded from all the fairly well off families not helping me out at all after hours of labour and education. Not even sparing a toonie for lunch money or something. I MIGHT be a little bitter :P

But yeah, that's cool that you have an arrangement. It's good to be able to help and not worry about being taken advantage of. :)

Yeah, video cards can be really finicky, and they need to be cleaned often, I find. Either that, or ensure you have good cable management and airflow.
Surge protectors and good power supplies are honestly the most important combo you'll ever have when building a new rig. Invest in a good surge protector, and even if your house is hit by lightning, chances are you'll be fine (mine was the one time that happened to me). But getting connections right with the power supply is incredibly important. :P

Haven't posted in here for a while. I've been hopelessly slack lately. Very busy at work and then, as experience has taught me, I've jumped at any chance for socialising (gets harder as you get older).

Anyway, hope everyone's writing is ticking along well. Currently, I'm struggling with writing a knock-down, drag-out brawl between Kai Leng and Miranda but trying not to go overboard with the brutality. I think you can get away with a certain amount of 'uncomfortable' reading (I dabbled with it in chapter sixteen), but there is a risk of looking like a sadist...or is it masochist when it's first-person? =p

For discussion's sake, has anyone attempted a similar sort of thing, or included a fight where their main character essentially loses? I'd be interested in reading any such stuff if people have links.

I think the farthest that I went with having the main character loose... is getting shot at or stabbed or beaten down emotionally.

For Shepard in the game, I think Thessia was a place where Shepard loses.  You have to have some place where you think the main character looses it all or almost loses it.  He or she then finds the strength and comes back as a lion... for example.  S/he kicks ass near the end.

So with Miranda... honestly, I would have loved to see her kick Kai Leng's butt but intelliently.  Her using her mind, her biotic moves, and essentially outsmarting him. (apparently she had when slipping that tracer on him. I think she was just caught off guard from that one video of Kai Leng leeping at her.) That could make her feel a bit cocky but then Kai Leng could get in few good moves balance it out.

Personally, I'm against violence towards woman and that's what we do see a lot of on tv in crime shows and so forth.  I've asked myself why is it always the woman who are victims of rape, battered wives, poisoned, stranglation, shot etc.

Yeah, graphic cards are monsters nowadays.  Stretching from end to end and so heavy.  I do have surge protectors now and I clean my rig every week. Really. Every weekend, I will take out whatever can be taken out, wash whatever can be washed and dry properly and the rig's innards dusted and vacuumed. :P

A few months ago when I called in the techs, newly recommended, they helped me to bring down the rig to the graphic card vendor, the techs at that end thought it's a new machine and couldn't believe it's 3 years old. Neither could the techs I called in until I enlightened them.:lol::lol:

Aye, I think Miranda would use her intellect and her fully-tooled skillset to  ward off leng, or even wound him. Considering a near-death and sluggish Thane managed to knock Leng around, I'm pretty sure Miranda could go toe to toe with him. He's too cocky, and so is miranda, but she's cocky because she's smart, able to adapt. leng has tech and close combat skills. I think she'd edge him out if she was able to control the environment to her advantage.
But I also don't consider leng to be a top-tier assassin, just a teched up good one, who happens to be reckless and a bit insane. :P

As for violence against women, I think it's a common stereotype. I get really angry sometimes at how 'stranger danger" it's portrayed as, usually. A lot of assault victims/survivors know the attacker, but that's so rarely touched upon. And so often, the women who were attacked are sex workers, or in work where their bodies are more 'valued'. Or the "vulnerable teenage girl who happens to dress somewhat revealing" stereotype that subtly casts blame over clothing choice.
And I've never seen a show like Law and Order covering a male getting raped unless it was a mentally disabled guy. It's as if men can't be raped, especially by women. Or have domestic violence inflicted on them. It's kind of pathetic, and why I've stopped watching most crime procedurals. It's all sensationalism. They jump to common tropes far too often, and I feel they propogate this idea that women are 100% at risk 100% of the time, and they take focus away from more realistic avenues of violence that women experience in favour of more stereotyped ones.

I have replaced several parts on several computers muself over the years... I have all the parts cause for some reason I keep thinking they will come in handy for whatever. I could have done the hard drive and the power supply and possibly the mother board Havent tried that yet. However I paid good money for a warranty so I took it in. I know the hard drive was going because it was doing some strange things, however , as you can see why, I was loathed to take it in.

I got my loaner, not as good or even as close to good as my beast but it plays the games and it has a word processor because for some reason my sons and husbands don't. Now downloading everything several times in the next few days will be a pain in the ass... specially since Ill be doing it twice

I was productive today. Plotted out 6 pages worth of written plots in chapters/ideas from where my story is now to where I left off... trying to get a more coherent sense in my mind where it's all going so I can finish up this new chapter and get it published... had to work through an idea I've been exploring in my mind wanting out. :) You know those ideas that want to take it in a new direction from what you previously written? Had to make sure it worked with what I had written ahead and previous.

Yeah, I've got an idea of how to keep it balanced enough. After all, as the game suggests, she had to have learned something crucial about him. Whether she's a better combatant close-up, I'm not so sure (and after having fought a load of Reapers), but getting in close to plant the tracer was a risky move, regardless. I'm actually painting Leng as the cocky one (and he obviously has temper issues).

I guess my main thought was showing her worn down enough that she can barely stand when she confronts her father. And obviously include the old 'break 'em down to build 'em back up' moment. :P

Thanks to everyone who offered feedback! I may actually push things a little further than before but try and use my best judgement so it all serves a purpose. Just need to find time to get the damn thing written...

Got a question about biotics and armor. How much effect does the type of armor affect the casting ability of biotics? As in the lighter the armor, the better the force and application of the cast?

well, guessing by the gameplay, i'd say none, (say in mp, the krogan have a fair amount of power, and so do say the asari who wear a morinth suit) but methinks lighter armor would have less of a dampening effect than heavier

Ok. I've finally nailed my plotline and character development as well as primary plot. The first three chapters are really shaping up and I even got the FanFic Critic (if you know of her, which you probably dont) to help me with revisions and such. Please take a look and leave your critiques here or on fanfiction.net if you wish. I'd appreciate the support and the criticism as long as it's constructive.

Try Nathaniel Mechaly, I thing he's the composer of the song you're talking about. As for the name of the song IDK.

In ME1, biotic users pretty much stick with light armour.  Except Wrex, but as a krogan that's understandable.  In ME2, armour weight doesn't come into the equation.  In ME3, weapons weight is the issue.

What does any of that mean?  Who knows.  :wizard:

Just a little tid-bit, Im on an engineering student's salary of $0. Cheap is good.
