Personally I don't like to have biotic Shepards because I think it's good for other characters to fill this role - and I've also noticed in cutscenes how Shepard doesn't use biotics even when he/she has, most notably in the Grissom Academy cutscenes when Shepard attempts to break the glass with the butt of an assault rifle and Jack uses her biotics to smash the glass.
I've noticed that a lot of cutscenes in ME3 could've differed if Shepard had been recorded as a biotic for the scenes. Personally I don't like to have Shepard as a biotic because I don't like to have her/him as brilliant as everything.
I would love to hear about other people's perspectives on this. Do other people have biotic Shepard's from ME1?
Well, I have six Shepards. One for each class. So yes, I have biotic Shepards. But my main was an infiltrator (and the one that I used for background info in my fic). I agree with you about the cutscenes, but sadly that was one of those areas where it was a question of money. It would have been awesome to have two versions of all those cutscenes... One for Shepards with biotics, whether sentinels, adepts or vanguards... and one for non-biotics. But I'm sure that it just wasn't cost-effective.
I never really noticed any issues with the niches for other characters while playing biotic Sheps. Because when my Shep was a biotic, it meant I needed to bring in tech-oriented squadmates more often than biotic ones. Especially in ME1, when you couldn't hack/bypass things without someone that had the appropriate skill. But when I was tech/combat Shep, I needed biotic squadmates to a point. However, I must say that for me, I never felt like having a biotic squadmate was necessary in ME1. I always needed a techie, but I did fine on any mission even if I took no biotics at all in the team. In ME2 & 3, where you could hack/bypass regardless of class, squadmates became entirely inconsequential, save for preference. You didn't really need them to fill any niches at all. But again, this is my opinion. I know some people like to micromanage their squad and bring along people to support their abilities. I just never found it necessary, as I said.
But it's not really that Shep is brilliant at everything when biotic. There is always an area of slight weakness. As a biotic, Shep was less effective with tech-based things (at least as far as ME1... later games were a bit more "Shepard is God", no matter what your class... since they did away with limits on armor and weapon use in ME2 and 3 respectively).
But personally, having played every class, I would say that my easiest playthroughs were actually as the infiltrator, rather than biotics. In ME1 Infiltrators failed to impress me, save for the fact that in any game with guns, sniper rifles are always awsome (my opinion only). But once they introduced the tactical cloak? Easymode.
Anyway, I'm drifting off track, so...
tl;dr: I never found biotic Shepards to be spotlight stealers, except to the extent that he/she is the main character of the story. If Shepard is a biotic, other areas of ability would naturally be weaker since the focus would have been on strengthening and mastering biotics.
As for cutscenes, money issue. Two versions would have been awesome, but cost twice as much.
