Hot heart likes comma's.Image IPB ;)

I can get a bit OCD about them, but I do/did point out that a lot of it is interpretive, based on your own style. Still, there are hard and fast rules, too.

I'm not a fan of unnecessary apostrophes though. ;)

Well, there are quite a few places where an ' is necessary. Haven't really seen people use unnecessary '.:D

There's one in the first quote. The multiple of comma is commas. Comma's suggests that something belongs to the comma. Image IPB

Yay, lol.  Sorry.  Amused me anyway that there was one there staring us in the face as it was discussed, though upon a quick re-read, I think possibly Hot Heart alluded to it...

RE: punctuation. There was an amusing joke from a female comedian I read from the Edinburgh comedy festival. I found it funny as a bloke, but you literary ladies might appreciate it more hehe.

"A semi-colon is rather like my husband's penis. I never really know what it's for and I never end up using it anyway."

Hehe. I like it!

The only 'grammar joke' I've come up with, is the following:
My English may not be perfect, but knowing how not to end a sentence with a preposition is something I am particularly proud of.

I've a couple of language 'posers'.

A teacher set an exercise where the students John and Jane were required to insert either 'had' or 'had had' into a space for a sentence to make most sense. John, whereas Jane had had 'had', had had 'had had'; 'had had' had had the teacher's approval.

And similar...

The landlord wanted his pub's sign to look like this: Pig-and-Whistle. So he asked the sign writer to insert hyphens between 'pig' and 'and', and 'and' and 'Whistle'.

It may not be necessary, but at first it just looks like absolute gibberish that way. Not to mention that spelling the words properly is faster than that.  But, it is still interesting that the brain works that way.

Thanks to everyone who answered my question from days ago - I enjoyed reading everyone's personal experiences with biotic Shepards etc.

RE commas: Don't get me started on this Image IPB. I'm a serial comma and semi-colon user - I sprinkle them everywhere, probably (most definitely) where they're not even needed - but I do it anyway Image IPB.

Also to any asari fans out there, I just realised how every writer I've come across uses Red Sand as the drug of choice, probably due to how mainstream it is. But doesn't anyone know that it doesn't effect asari or batarians? I always grimace whenever I see writers talking about asari hitting the Red Sand. Why, oh, why??? Image IPB

Erhem Image IPB. Then again, I'm hardly one to complain about writing mishaps when I haven't published any new chapters for, like, two months.

Has anyone else suffered from really bad writer's block before? The problem with me is that I'm extremely lazy. I have a plan - I have a lot of things planned out and a lot of future material written out; I just can't seem to sit down and actually write what I need to write. I've happily churned out 40k words on useless things - I tell myself that they're useful for the future, but they certainly don't help me now. I think I'm just avoiding the current task at hand, and it's only making me more frustrated. When I'm frustrated, I can't work. Then I feel guilty. Then it's just a vicious circle - one that I get caught up in. Then I get depressed. Image IPB

Yes, there's a lot of forehead-slapping in my life. And for good reason.

Heh, I havent really written dince my last chapter before christmas and I dont think I really need to bore everyone with the details. Im slowly getting out of it. Wrote half a page of garbage and started over then place out in point form what I wanted to do and now Im slowly taking each point and elaborating, then elaborating more and I have something started but still the wind just aint blowing these sails...

I had it pretty bad for the past couple of months. It was a mixture of being too tired from work and easily driven to distraction so that I never really sat down and ploughed through what needed writing. Even now, I'm sort of writing in fits and starts but it feels good to at least be chipping away at it. The big problem was not really planning enough of what was going to happen in this latest chapter, but on the plus side, I'm coming up with more ideas that I rather like, in the process.

Unfortunately, this evening I've got myself riled up trying to explain simple business strategy to the most thick-headed person I know. Apparently, his personal experience is far more valid than the business analysts at Microsoft and Amazon, so what do I know? :pinched:

If only I had to write something angry...

This is a problem that pops up for every writer from time to time. I dread its return in my case. But when I find myself getting bogged down and losing my spark for a story, I find that doing something related to my story, but not that I would actually use for it, helps quite a bit.

As an example from my current story, when I started to struggle a bit early on, I decided to sit down one morning and write about two of my characters shopping together on Illium. I didn't use any of it because it didn't fit in the story and didn't advance the plot, but it helped me to unravel some of the stumbling blocks in my head just by getting into the characters and their activities. And I even ended up putting a tiny bit of it into a later Chapter on Noveria, though with only one character instead of both.

But it may be worth trying. Just pick a character or two from your story, and write about something they did during downtime. You may not use it, but it could lead to something you can use. At the very least, it may inspire some creativity.

Hmm, does anyone have any tips on how to write someone 'using Throw'? Usually I would just use the 'hurling enemies about' shortcut, but I need to specifically reference Miranda 'hurling a surge of biotic energy' or whatever so as to detonate an incoming warp field mid-air (sent by a banshee, so it's big and slow).

Without making it sound videogamey, I'm struggling to distinguish it from how I would describe Warp. And since Miranda doesn't have that skill in games, I'm worried some readers might get confused.

But, trying to be serious (if such a thing is possible). I feel, in some way, that I'm deliberately writing stuff that may be good in itself, but is totally and utterly useless to what I need to be doing. I'm lazy, at the end of the day. I need to kick myself in gear - that's the only thing for it.

How many people here are working on multiple works? If you are; do you ever feel guilty or find problem in splitting your devotion/attention between the two?

I'm afraid I can't help much on that one. I make frequent reference in my story to characters creating a "biotic orb" in their hand and hurling it, but it's usually followed with something like "The force of the biotic throw sent her opponent rocketing backward" or "it blossomed into a singularity, hoisting several enemies into the air" or whatever, just to make clear what sort of effect the ability had. I haven't gotten too poetic about biotics in the story.

Prior to starting to publish my current story on FF.net, I used to write just to exercise my imagination and get ideas out of my head. I have hundreds of unfinished short stories, dozens of finished ones, and tons of random bits and pieces on my computer. But because I was always in the habit of writing something until a new idea popped into my head, then dropping it to write about the new one, I have firmly suppressed my urge to sidetrack myself on a second story. I want to be absolutely certain I will finish the first one, and if I let myself start something new, I may never finish.

Many people here do manage it. I personally can't risk it. Because I'm committed to finishing my current story.

Biotic orb. I like it!

This is what I have at the moment. It's subject to change as I tidy up the whole chapter at some point later on, but you should get the idea:

As soon as I reappear, the banshee's cruel gaze snaps to my position. It sweeps a hand through the air, conjuring another ball of energy, at which I hurl my own surge of biotic power in immediate response. They meet a moment later, with my own small effort destabilising the field, causing an explosive discharge of dark energy large enough to catch the creature in its wake.

(I'm not really happy with the 'in its wake' part either, but I'm sure I'll figure out a better way of expressing what I mean).

Maybe splitting the last line into two would let you put something you like better to the effect? Something like...

"...destabilizing the field, causing an explosive discharge of dark energy. To my satisfaction, I see the twisted form of my enemy engulfed by the blast."

Or something along those lines?

Yeah, I think was thinking of doing that. Though, I hadn't thought of 'engulfed'. That's a good word. Thanks!

I'd go with omni-tool. I just think it looks better this way.

Off-topic: I have a question of my own. Do you guys think biotics are genetic. An example: If two human biotics have a child would that child be biotic also. I just had this lingering in my head for months now, couldn't find the answer myself so now I'm wondering what others think.

One last thing. My chapter 4 is now up for anyone who's interested;)

The Codex says something along the lines that the only way for humans to get biotics is to be exposed to eezo while they're still in their mother's womb. So, I'd say that in humans it is probably not genetic. Especially since there have been human biotics for long enough for a pair of them to have a kid together.  And, most people say that humans are not naturally biotic, so I'd say definitely not.

One silly question : do you think Turians wear boots? I'm thinkng they do else they wouldn't be prancing around on Manae but most of the time, they don't seem to be wearing footwear. =]
