Just thought I'd share that I spent far too long trying to work a phrase I liked into my latest chapter somewhere (because I doubt I'd use it anywhere else), but gave up, Stupid self. I do not advocate the practice ("kill your darlings").
Anyway, if someone does want to use 'make a fist of the pain', feel free.
I know I convinced someone here to include the line, 'Death and I have established an equitable working relationship', somewhere in their work already.

A question, since this topic needs a bump:
I don't want to start any kind of debate over the endings, but assuming the endings as written post Extended Cut (the crucible causes the mass relays to cease functioning and fall apart, which seems to be the common element in all three), how long would you say is a reasonable time frame to put them back together, taking into account the fact that most worlds need a healthy dose of reconstruction as well?
I find myself struggling to make up my mind on this one. Two years strikes me as too little time, especially given the fact that I got the feeling from the games that Mass Relay technology wasn't fully understood. I've been circling around 5 years, but even that may be too little to get the whole network up and running again while rebuilding all the homeworlds. But I'd be interested to hear some thoughts about it. It's not really an issue for my current fic, but I'm already kicking around ideas for a second fanfic, and the amount of time required to get the relays up and running would influence which characters could show up for the story and which wouldn't be included.

I think it would be a while.
Could be worth extrapolating who considers their repair more of a priority and who is most able/in a better position to repair them. I suppose that depends on how peaceful (or not) you want your galaxy though.

As long as the work of fiction explains the hows and whys about their idea of a rebuilding, the author chooses the time it takes. Nonetheless, it's an interesting question to speculate over.
I'd guess fixing the first relay will be the most difficult and time consuming. Then they'd reuse the knowledge and get the major homeworlds in contact, then the other relays in counciol space. Fortunately, the distance between Sol and Arcturus is 36 light years, which can probably be covered in a week and make fixing both ends, and testing them, easier. Maybe the dead reaper or reapers contain the necessary information for relay repair, so they don't have to figure it out on their own; saving time. Also, maybe the secret to the Reapers' lack of need to discharge and 30 LY/day speed can be salvaged.

Call me pessimistic, but I've always thought rebuilding the network would involve decades of work. I tend to think along the lines it takes a few years just to build a new ship. So from that you have the basic frame assembly (year+ min), plus you have to get a handle on the new tech (depends on if comm-bouy tech meshes or how much Reaper info gets passed on), that could be a really big time sink, think small scale tests,etc (Remember Bahak doubt anyone wants that repeated on their doorstep). During all that your having to refine vast amounts of eezo (lots of other demands for that stuff too I would imagine) or if you're real unlucky you'll have to rebuild your refineries first, that's another possible big project. Whilst doing all that your also trying to basically recreate your entire economy/infrastructure with the problems that entails (security problems/skill shortages/resource shortages/health issues, etc) and probably some vocal opponents for the whole project (why rebuild the relays now? our kiddies are starving, let's rebuild them later types, for one). In a post-destroy setting I could see them still rebuilding the network a good century after 'Red Light'
Control on the other hand skips the whole R&D side of things, gives the new 'Overlord' a presumably VAST industrial workforce (if you head-cannon that ALL those Reapers can build things) that could probably have nothing really better to do (eg Thanks for not killing us, now get out of our sight mentality), and immune to all those little problems organics face (disease, despair, powerful need to eat that month, etc) and no dissenting elements (no 'I can't fix your Relay, I'm busy repairing a hospital' more 'By your command'). I used to have an 'anon' reviewer for my FF Blue who signed 'Hopelessly Blue'. Was a regular reader and was very nice about my amateur musings. Now, they stopped posting reviews (as HB at least) a while back and seemed never to return. Being anon, I could never pm thanks or discuss or anything. So...

To everyone who weighed in on the Relay rebuilding situation so far, thanks! I am not sure I can agree with the estimate of a century or more... I'd think most races are so dependent on the Relays and would be committed enough to reestablishing contact with their own colonies that they'd put the repair pretty high on the priorities list... Although of course, everyone's infrastructure would be a major concern too, as I originally said. But it's good that most people seem to agree with my instinct that it would be a fair bit longer than a few years. Between the Relays and the FTL comm buoys being down, I have been mulling over a lot of possibilities for elements of new stories to work on after my current one.
Although, if you subscribe to the endings as established, it's kind of a sad prospect for Shepard and his/her LI. Since the Normandy jumped through a Relay before the crucible, depending on where they ended up, it could be a fair number of years before the happy reunion... if one or both don't fall in love with someone else in the meantime.

Edit: that does remind me though... a disappointing aspect was the /fail setups that some of us made for ME3. You know, ALL the wrong choices and only 2 x ME2 squaddies left for ME3. It took a few goes but I got my dream 'nightmare' ME3 begining of a questionable and dedicated Cerberus operative (Miranda) and psychotic succubus (Morinth) and their content was pretty poo. Morinth's was a waste of space and Miranda's was just meh. Anyhoo, as you were.

I put a lot of the rebuilinding on the Quarians and them working on re-establishing the Geth who inturn helped and it ended up earning them a place on the council. The Mass Effect relays would be a high priority matter and with all races working together to help each other enaything is possible. But then it is pretty much anyone say.

Just had to share quick... Or maybe it would be considered bragging, but I'm just pleased with myself at the moment. Posted the newest Chapter of my story on Sunday, and then did no writing whatsoever for the rest of the day. Then yesterday I did no writing. Two days of not writing always makes me feel a little blah...
But today I am proud to say I've put just over 6,000 words in print. Been writing for the last four straight hours. So I guess I've made up for my days of laziness. Or at least I hope I have.

Aye, feels good to get out of a hole. Grats. I had a recent phase of about 2 months not particularly writing and certainly not posting because of it. 'tis a horrible place to be in when you feel you have something to say and can't get it out for whatever reason.

I might be able to manage something with that. Got a project going at the moment that that ties in with quite well.
Been away for a few days (decided I should take a break from the typewriter at the same time I went on hol for a weekend), but it feels like I've not missed too much.
Published a new chapter to my side-fic 'Resistance' last week. Kinda worrying that I've had no feedback on it at all. Would one of you guys be able to take a look at it and see if there's anything that needs improving?
