On the subject of self inserts, the farthest I'm willing to go is characters having similar tendencies to my kind of personality. I absolutely abhor stories that simply break the game with a blunt "stick the player literally into the game with all the knowledge of what's going to happen and that it's a game" attitude. It doesn't leave ANY room for character development, unique reactions, twists, etc. It's just a blunt "yeah, told you so, totally knew that was going to happen" kind of vibe the whole way through.
I do have a "bad company" type of story that runs in parallel with the events of ME shortly after the first one ends planned, but the characters will be grounded and actually part of it, not disconnected names. Let me know if any of you like the idea and I'll elaborate a bit more.
Also two other things I wanted to mention, first is I didn't really choose this username. Long story short one of my friends thought it would be funny to "make my account for me" and give me a COD-tryhard quickscoper-type username instead of my actual xbox GT, which is totally different. Second, as some other people have also said this thread is probably going to become a popular haunt for me, especially with how some of my fics are dwindling, which isn't exactly increasing writing motivation.
Yeah, full-on self inserts are bad news about 99.9% of the time. I figure, why not take attributes of yourself you want to write about, and pump them into Shep, some OCs, or just find similar traits to yours in established characters and work with that? it's basically, to some degree, what I do. I see some parts of myself in Shep, my OCs, Liara, Tali, Anderson, Ash, etc. and it's not hard to use that as a motivating force to connect with those characters and build them. I mean, I can see that, but full on self insert, "A timewarp transported me into the Mass Effect Universe and I know how it'll all end! I have to help Shepard save the galaxy!" style fic? I never read those, ever. They're a waste.
Nothing wrong with OCs. Drussius here has a fic full of OCs(minus Zaeed, I guess) and it's excellent. All in how you develop characters and the plot. Characters always, always need time to breathe, and reader understanding of characters should always be taken into consideration (for instance, don't go 10 chapters not letting readers in on characters and who they are, it's about as boring and unattached as watching a B-rated action movie usually).
I think OCs are one thing fandoms can really use to breathe life into the series.
Fics dwindling in viewers, or dwindling in material left until the finish? I suppose either can really cause a lack of motivation. There's a few hundred pages of advice and tips to scroll through here if you're feeling bored, but if you have any questions, or ideas you want to bounce off anyone, we're always pretty game. if you're looking for more readers and reviewers from us...that's tougher (I have a horde I'm already religiously following, alongside writing my own fic, so my time for reading new fics is currently at 0 seconds, alas)
Anywho, as I said to others, welcome to the thread!
