Thankfully I've seen a few quarian phrases I've invented used in other works such as "hesh'alan/hesh'la" but they've always been credited somehow (even if it was one guy crediting the first guy that credited me when he used it lol)

Hrm. I've seen hesh'nealan around before on a Tali fic I read,  "The Knife and the Turncoat". I suppose that's one of them?

At this point I barely remember. I know the first one that actually asked me to use it was a guy named Herr Wozek. That name sounds familiar tho.

Sounds like a nature vs nurture argument.

With the likes of OCD, I'd say certainly so.

thanks to everyone who responded to my question. as for OCD, I know it's a chemical imbalance in the brain and not caused by someone's experiences per se, but someone else mentioned PTSD, and I got a lightbulb. I suppose no one can fault me if the mental issues I was thinking of were triggered by a trauma I already had planned and not by genetic predisoposition. *smiles* feedback much appreciated!

Hey all! Been awhile :)

I have a question for the asari experts. Is there any established canon (either official or general assumptions made by most writers of asari-themed stories) that goes into detail on asari religion or similar beliefs? I haven't been able to find much aside from "used to be polytheistic, currently monotheistic with different goddesses perhaps representing different schools of philosophical thought" and of course the prothean stuff from ME3 that isn't really relevant to an ME1 fic. I've got a few things coming up where the subject might arise and would like to be "accurate" if the information exists. Otherwise I'll just make some stuff up that makes sense to me. XD

I'd check the Codex from ME3, as I beleive it goes into further detail, without the whole Prothean thing.  I didn't see a whole lot in the WIKI, but perhaps you'd have better luck than I.

Best of luck!

Wierded out?  I've gotten a few odd comments before.  Some of the irate comments I addressed directly, but in a cordial and professional manner.

I figure, if someone was emotional enough to get worked up over the story, I did my job, they just didn't agree with me, and that's on them.

Hope the wierdness subsides, or is at least manageable!

I have written already in one chapter that shepard watches blasto saves christmas. :) Not anything specific at all just a mention that my maleshep's a fan. Did listen to all the comments on that ad near miranda's door. Hmm wonder if blasto's running around?

Well... the whole tone of the messages feels very... creepy, to be honest. I'm constantly addressed in very familiar terms such as 'My Dear', as in every sentence. (They messaged me for the first time after I uploaded a new story Saturday night).
That, combined with simply the wording of some of the messages comes across as a little stalkerish.

E.g. the first message is: 'My Dear Fainmaca. How are you My Dear? Please send me a message!'

Thanks!  I did check the wiki, and didn't find what I was looking for.  I haven't tried the codex yet- hard to check from work.  ;)  I'll do that tonight.

I figured I'd hit here as well because I've discovered several useful fan conventions from reading this thread.  One of the best things about writing fanfic is you have this kind of almost "broader canon" to work from based on writer/reader consensus about issues that are otherwise unclear (for example resolving Miranda's age with her biotic ability).

After browsing on DA I just got the most random fic idea...

Would anyone fault me for having a scene where some of the characters try to sneak one of their Geth teammates on public transport on the Citadel? The only catch is the best they can come up with is making him wear a Trench Coat and a Fedora, with his "flashlight eye", cables on the back of his neck, things like that clearly visible, and the idiot clerk who accuses Asari of being Geth Infiltrators falls for it.

Anyone like?

Well, I've always ascribed to creating something that works, explaining it in the author's notes, and apologizing in said notes if it doesn't match up.

Actually, once in a fic, I totally screwed up some of the unspecified backlore, as a resource later changed the background for it.  However, upon reviewing the facts, I actually preferred my take.

The point wasn't a widely referenced bit of story; so, I made an author's note, did some retconning in the story (with a few conversations), and moved onwards!

Best of luck to you.  I hope that pans out.  Speaking from personal experience, I always wonder if it isn't me being arrogant.

Then I realized that I was being naive, and it just got awkward with that party afterwards.

Dunno how I'd deal with this anoymous person.  If I couldn't avoid talking to them, or didn't want to ignore their posts...

Well, I tried telling someone that it was unwanted attention...they didn't take the hint, and I ended up blocking the person...

Fandoms are all well and good, but sooner or later, you've got to protect your own privacy.

Did you ever take Legion to the Citadel?

Yes, loved Legion. That was partially the inspiration. For the most part I died laughing picturing a Geth quoting Legion by saying "Geth do not infiltrate" while dressed up in a trench coat and a fedora. But you have to admit, between that desk lady accusing Asari of being Infiltrators AND thinking a Geth that literally is called a Geth Infiltrator that's standing directly in front of her is just a regular assistant bot, it would be worth it.

The Wiki page about asari goes into as much detail about Siari, the mainstream religion, as there is in the lore. Other than the fundamental ideas, there is no information at all (nothing specific about the location, practice or the preists.). Other than Siari and the Athame Dochtrine, few religions have survived post spaceflight. There were like a few religions about the Ardat-Yakshi condition, since Samara mentioned there was fascination about them; of course, large-scale dominations might add to this. If you don't want to take the "go to hell" line by the Eclipse merc in Samara's RM as a writer oversight, you could use it to assume the concept of an underworld exists/existed in some of their religions.

You could pretty much make up any small religions and you wouldn't contradict any future canon. As for the knwon religions, you'll have to tread on thin ice with lore, and make logical assumptions.

So now that I've been writing my story, after a long hiatus, I've found that I've been focusing more on dialogue. This is odd, as I used to be all about the fight scenes way back when I started writing (in general).

Reading the progression of my previous works over the years, it seems that I find the drama to be more compelling, however...

Just curious to ask the group:

Do you find dialogue heavy pieces to be entertaining? Or do you prefer it when a paragraph portrays the emotion and thoughts contained in an exchange, as opposed to exposition?

Perhaps you hate all the talking and feeling, preferring to get to the juicy action laden bits?

I find that a good balance is best, but again, I am afraid I am doing whole chapters of nothing but dialogue exposition, and am curious if any find this a misstep.

One question. I know Saren has a brother, Desolas, but would anyone find it aggravatingly lore-breaking if he had a second sibling? I'm just trying to get some of my dicier ideas out there so that I can see a general reaction before putting them in just in case one of them gets everyone up in a fit.
