Sorry, sorry, I didn't think everyone was going to take that post as me complaining. I'd posted that piece of writing a couple days ago and it just kind of sucks when you go and write something that long and thought-out and no one ever looks at it. I can see how my post was almost like a self-bump without actually bumping the original thread. I don't intend to keep asking people to read it if that's what any of you mean.
...
Ok, fine. Jeez. You guys are quite a different bunch form the guys on the main forums.
I guess I won't even bother.
Chiao.
Yeesh, I leave for a few hours and a wall of text greets me, haha.
Anyways, welcome to the Fan Creations section of the forums. I wouldn't take it personally. Honestly, I tried to drum up support for my fic in a separate thread, but my fishing yielded no results. There's just too many great options to parse through in here.
Conversely, I got a lot of great ideas in discussions from these threads. Also, my tagline has generated a fair bit of traffic to my stories. Not as many reviews as I would like, but I hope to get more once I start posting my other story regularly.
And honestly, it doesn't take many reviews, just enough to know it's entertaining. Constructive feedback is even better. One of the best reviews I ever got picked apart one of my greatest flaws as a writer. The fan liked the works, but found an aspect of them tedious. Looking back on it, I agree, I needed better editing. Whether or not my writing has gotten it is a different matter!
Keep at it, and best of luck!

I've read that Thessia is strict on
who's allowed on the planet. Are only Asari allowed to live and go to
college on Thessia or can humans go to college there as well? Anyone
know if the population includes other races? Mostly interested in if
humans can go to college there. *story idea I'm working on...*
There is no canon on the matter, do not take it for anything more than speculation.
Considering that asari have time to study matters with a greater degree of
thouroughness due to their lifespan, one can assume their education takes up quite a few more years for them. They have a different idea of how much is a long time, after all. I'd think a human would be accepted, but as the humans don't have the luxury of decades, they have to impress them enough to be allowed to study there, most likely.
As for
population, I'd assume mostly asari, but hundred thousands to millions
of a few other species. It seems logical for a species that can mate with anything sentient to let them live on their world too. Most turians or salarians, I'd guess, and perhaps a few thousand humans.
I hope these guesses make some sense. It is up to you to fill those holes in canon when writing fanficiton and hope BW doesn't contradict it in future Mass Effect content.

Replying to another poster, a few posts back, about lack of reviews. Yeah, been there myself. Would love more but I eh, oh well. All you can really do is present what you got, hoping it sparks some kind of reaction or comment on how they found the chapter. Good or bad. With the feedback I do get, I seriously look at the comment, what's it saying and maybe adjust accordingly if warranted.
Continuing to plug away at it. It's been great... Not sure whether to end it at chapter 32 like planned or extend it farther but with maybe a possible time jump...

So question of the day: are there any 20th/21st century things that you can't help yourself from slipping into your fic? Music, tv/movies, comics, books, that sort of thing? Care to share an example?
For instance, I just had a great idea for a nickname for an OC, but it's definitely a 20th century reference - it's from a kids cartoon. (I'm doing it anyway because it's a little too funny for me to pass up).
Books are probably easiest to get away with I'd think, people still read Chaucer, Shakespeare and Rabelais after all so it stands to reason that the good literature from our day and age would stick around into the 22nd. (Maybe even some of the exceptionally bad literature?)

It wouldn't be unreasonable to assume that stuff from the past is still around and being referenced in the future. I doubt humanity would have suddenly just said, "Screw it, let's all forget about history." at some point between the present day and the time of Mass Effect.dpMeggers wrote...

Also, I am veeeeeery guilty of putting in stuff from our time period into my fic, and no one has complained.

Totally use modern day idioms, phrases, and jokes. For instance, I have a sequence where Zaeed needs to confirm Kasumi's identity, and uses the bars from "Shave and a Haircut" to do it.
Those who aren't familiar with this song, you really are, it's just the name that eludes you. Watch any cartoon comedy from the 90's or before, they've got it.
I also have to edit "weapon magazine" to "thermal clip" constantly.

Alternatively, you could 'update' existing things to fit in-universe. For example, Blasto is an analogue to all sorts of action films/film tough guys from Dirty Harry to James Bond. It's clearly written so that you know the original pieces that are being referenced.

Ditto, using the dead Thorian as a driving force for one of the plots in my current fic.
I am avoiding creating a live Thorian since it's too OP a force to throw in when I'm already dealing with multiple potentially OP enemies
I feel like reintroducing the Thorian deserves its own story. and I couldn't do it justice. Explaining how another survived though would be interesting. And if they can resurrect the Rachni, I can see them resurecting the Thorian.
BTW: if you read the "Marauder Shields" comic by Koobismo, he just introduced a (potentially) live Thorian into the story a few episodes ago.

Heh, I tend to avoid that sort of stuff, though I won't deny I include those sorts of references on a meta-level. I'm currently trying to fit in a line from an Idlewild song that sort of inspired my fic title without it sounding too odd, for example.

Hah, Blasto was amazing. I beleive every line from the audio log was a direct reference to a cheesy 80's action flick (primarily Lethal Weapon and Die Hard)
It just goes to show, future tech doesn't simply wipe away all the tribulations in society, it just shifts them into something new, and gives us new problems to solve. I think that's why I enjoy ME, the characters seem relatable and "normal" by our standards.
Conversely, there was a story I once read where humans had overcome all adversity by sterilizing itself, homogenizing it's populous into a "utopia," and simply growing the best genetic traits (and selecting the "best minds") out of cloning tubes.
Can't remember the story, but I remember hating it, as the only soulful character was a time jumper from our time who got thrown into quarantine for life...

As for future tech and tribulations in society: I believe Shepard has this gem to offer through a conversation with EDI.
Shepard: How's your focus, EDI? Any big questions?
EDI: No.
Shepard: Any small questions?
EDI: No.
Shepard: Any lingering issues?
EDI: About what?
Shepard: An imperfect designer who could be seen as a warped father figure, maybe?
EDI: Definitely not. Did something prompt this line of questioning?
Shepard: (rubbing her forehead) I've just learned over the years that you have to ask about these things.
So many daddy issues. So many issues really. Shepard seems to make friends/crew out of some of the most dysfunctional but capable people in the galaxy. But that's ok. Perfection is boring.

1) Details
Do you agonize over the little ones? Things like 'What should I name this ship?' or 'What should this character be wearing in this scene?' Because apparently I do. I think I've revised the number of piercings one of my OCs has about 5 or 6 times. Certain ships have been named and renamed a handful of times. Which leads to the related question: how much do you pay attention to the (minor) details in other fics?
2) Feeling bad about what you put your characters through.
Shepard (in my case) is a Sole Survivor. His best friend serves with him. His best friend has a younger sister who is also friends with Shepard (and may or may not have a minor case of hero worship). I am writing a prequel. Akuze happens. I have to break a pair of already pretty fragile hearts. Oh and as it's currently planned, there's a set up for some nice angst later. Now all this death serves the story - but I feel bad for doing it to figments of my imagination.
I'm going to repeat that: I feel bad for imaginary people. Because of something I thought up. To do to them/to have happen to them. Does anyone else do this? Think 'oh this should happen' and then have it occur to them that 'Oh my God, that's a horrible thing to happen to someone. Why would I do that?' (The answer of course is to serve the purposes of the story. But I still feel bad doing it.)

I occassionally obsess over small details. Like the weapon that random enemy character is using. Though I always end up just saying, "Whatever, they'll just have whatever weapon the reader wants them to.

Heh, true enough. I also like that it pretty much pokes fun at the RPG trope of everybody needing the hero to run a fetch quest for them (they had a VERY similar dialogue in Jade Empire between the hero and a random NPC cook).

Sorry for the paraphrasing, but I wanted to avoid creating a quote singularity (which is a thing, apparently, haha).
Anyhoo, I totally obsess over certain details. I've renamed a ship and some of the terms for my baddies any number of times. As far as weapons and armor, less so, unless there's a story or quip to be made around it.
Heck, the whole reason it took me a month to write the last four chapters is because I was figuring out how the bad guys' master plans (mainly weapons and experiments) should work. Figuring out the balance in order to make proper sense can be time intensive.
As far as feeling bad about what I put my characters through...sure, to a certain extent. There's only been a rare few times that I felt conflicted about doing something because it unnerved me. I certainly struggle with "killing off my darlings" unless I have a good hook for it. I actually have to premeditate it at the inception of the character, or it often doesn't get done,
More frequently, however, I grin with sadistic glee as I put my characters through their paces, so they can come out the other side, tempered to the point of breaking.
As Jim Butcher says, "my job is making his [Harry Dresden's] life hard...and business is good." Conversely, Butcher totally acknowledges that his hero would like to kill him, if they ever met in real life!

1) No I'm actually quite bad for little details, if it isn't vital then I won't really bother bringing it up - I'm a dialogue-centric writer mostly that I will fuss over though and continully read the lines in the characters' voices until they sound just right. Lines for Mordin are especially stubborn.
2) Yes. The first chapter of this fic I'm working on has what was happening on the Citadel during the ending - let's just say it was a bad day for some people.

Funny you mention premeditation: the only characters I've killed so far have been ones I decided were going to die from the outset. I considered killing a few others but never actually did.
And it's true, I do vacillate between 'Oh that's horrible' and 'Oh but I absolutely have to do it.'
I think if my 3 main characters were to meet me in real life, Shepard would probably take me into custody (possibly having knocked me out first), Robbie would take me into custody and be disgusted with me as a human being and Tess would beat me senseless unless someone pulled her off me.

1] No. Once I did the research and found the information I wanted, I used it and that's that. I generally pay attention to the plot and chars, not what they're wearing, etc.
2] I've little emotional attachment mainly because I'm not writing a dramatic fic. Some OCs die of course, but I hardly go into tears over them or feel very bad.
