Garrus seeing Tali's face for the first time is where I'm describing it. Something along the lines of him running a finger along the lines I don't know, I wasn't sure whether to call them ridges but they don't stick out or at least it doesn't look like they do.

Something about Quarians with the glowing and the bent legs makes me think of insects a little so I was drawing the bioluminescent idea from fireflies.

Fair enough. Markings maybe? (Sorry I'm not very creative tonight)

I always figured it was cybernetic augmentations too, facilitating the "tech guru" explanation.  If you are going for bioluminescence, I could see a potential explanation that doesn't go over the top: perhaps have it be a unique construct that reflects ambient light (even in the absense of sunlight), sort of like extra shimmery hair.

I guess your logic could be it's similar to how all lifeforms are carbon based, yet coal is remarkably different from diamonds.  Perhaps these filaments in the skin are closer to silicon granules, vs human hair and nails being keratin.

Sorry I haven't been around much of late. Time has been tight for me, and just keeping on schedule with releases for my fic has been a struggle. However, I wanted to weigh in on this one and just give my personal take.

It is mentioned (though I can't remember where exactly) that quarians do cybernetic modifications. The lines in the picture I always viewed as interface points of contact for the suit, to help regulate biometric systems and the like. It actually ended up playing in as a point of tragedy for the quarian character in my fic.

As for the eyes, that one's more open to conjecture, but in my fic I explained it as their eyes being reflective, like a cat's eyes, rather than actually glowing, and the shine came from the holographic overlay in my quarian's visor reflecting off of her eyes. Of course, going back to the cybernetics angle, it could also be a product of ocular implants of some kind. Although I doubt people would argue much over any particular explanation on that one, so just plain glowing would undoubtedly work.

I think bioluminescence is an interesting idea. My only personal issue with it is that the ME universe already has one bioluminescent race (hanar) and if quarians were actually bioluminescent, why would they choose to make suits that are so dark and opaque? Why not glowing lines to simulate their natural bioluminescence? Just a thought.

Edit: for spelling

Found it. Geth dreadnought with Liara, Tali says "for all out cybernetic upgrades..." bla bla bla. I guess it would make sense to be an interface. And I was so attached to my bioluminescent idea I just can't back it up.

Nothing to add so I will just say that writing Miranda apologising to Oriana is annoying because of how she addresses her.

e.g. "Ori, I'm sorry." "Sorry, Ori."

I have to find alternative ways to phrase it. :P

Can't say I see Miranda referring to her as 'sis', at least not at this particular juncture.

Thanks for trying to help, though. I'm gonna stick with ellipses, other bits of speech and whatnot. :P

Not quite that simple, heh. More like, "Ori, I...I wish I could explain. I'm sorry."

You could always create a second pet name, like "Rini" or a synonym for "Dear."

The reflective option is what I went for with Tali in my fic. Biolum is interesting in thought, but makes no sense in practice. Why would a species evolve this trait that is clearly living on a planet with full sun and aren't cave dwellers or the like. Not to mention even if they did, it wouldn't make sense for their eyes themselves to glow as that would just blind them.

They could be nocturnal? Like fireflies.

I also think relfective/cybernetics makes more sense. But you can justify just about anything if you come up with a reasonable explanation.

Or she could use her full name? "Oriana, I'm sorry" doesn't sound nearly as moment-killing. (Unless you were trying to write a slightly humorous apology in which case funny is the way to go).

In other news...
I POSTED THE FIRST NEW CHAPTER OF MY FIC IN 8 MONTHS! (The caps indicate that I am over the moon excited by this).

In other other news... It took me eight months to write just over 1000 words. BUT NEW CHAPTER IS FINISHED!

Yeah, since it's first-person I could always add in a humorous little 'God, that sounds stupid.' This is not the right moment though.

I just went with glowy eyes. I thought it looked cool, and didn't care about the details.

I'm going with the cybernetic implants/interfaces, it also serves as a way of demonstrating the Geth therapy.

Edit: oh and this may be reaching a little but I'm going to show Quarian skin tone changing as they get healthier, so becoming less human-coloured like in Tali's photo to the more purple colour shown in the EC.

Cool idea. I wonder how many Quarians got sunburns after landing on Rannoch...

So question of the day:
Assuming you have a Shepard (or even if you don't, think of your in game Shepard) how do you justify (in character) everyone referring to them by their last name? Or do you?

My (John) Shepard just prefers being called by his last name even at home. He's a spacer so growing up around military and then joining the Alliance at 18 it's just a force of habit.

I do it by barely featuring him, having characters refer to him with a knowing 'he', and figuring that he and Miranda share that overly formal way of addressing one another, sometimes in a flirty way ("Still trying to maintain control, Ms. Lawson?") :P

I imagine if I ever actually wrote a story about Shepard, I would give him a first name that people use. Seems weird not to.

My Shep came into the military with a distinct past, and a distinct group of friends she had grown close to. To them, she was Amber.
*SPOILERS IN CASE SOME ONE HERE IS PLANNING ON READING/MIDWAY THROUGH MY ORIGINS FIC*

She didn't join the military primarily to be a part of something bigger, she did it to keep her best friend safe, and to get the hell away from earth and settle on a colony like she and her sister had wanted to do.

*/SPOILERS*

In the military, she's never really been able to get attached to anyone, really, and since the military calls people on a last name basis, she's always been Shepard to them. But, as she grows closer to others on the Normandy, that might change at times.

So to her, if you're in close with her, she'll probably be more open to them using her first name.

Interesting answers.

Well in order to answer my own question: it sort of depends on the Shepard.

Damon (Earthborn) actually started without a first name. By the time he was 10 years old he was going exclusively by Shepard. If he had any other names he didn't remember them. It wasn't until his 'sister' adopted him that his first name came up and she was the only person who ever called him by his first name anyway. Then she died - and as it was her name for him he just stopped using it.

Eponine's dad was a fan of Victor Hugo. (She had a younger sister named Esmerelda and a brother named Gavroche - Colonists). But she thinks its a ridiculous name - especially in the military. So Shepard it is.

I rarely use the first name for Shepard in the fic, even with her LI. It was used once by Liara to amplify a plea.

Reason is that throughout her childhood, Shepard had been bounced in and out of numerous bases. There was hardly time for her to make a permanent home / friends, so she's hardly used her first name.

Not totally out of the ordinary in a military outfit to use last names heavily. In combat it cuts down on confusion too since you might have three Michael's but only one of them is likely to have the last time 'Diporio' etc.

I do use Shepard's first name in my fic depending on who is addressing him, though. Mostly Tali, his mother, Chakwas occasionally. I stuck with the 'canon/default' of John Shepard though.
