Re: Shepard's first name in game I tend to name the Sheps after old thespians (eg Cary/Grace, Humphrey/Ingrid etc) so it's kind of ingrained, childhood, embarrasment on Shep's part? (Definitely on mine though - I suck at names!)

In my fic I'm using Jean, but the only folks that use that -so far- are Miranda (LI) and Kai Leng (Git) I've got a scene in my head with Shep's mom talking to him though so I'm thinking go double-barrelled maybe (Jean-Robie? Yes I know, but old movies remember!)

PS: Does anyone have a good idea for a drunk slurring of 'lieutenant'? I'm using louie as a placeholder but, I don't know, feels off.

I do it by barely featuring him, having characters refer to him with a knowing 'he', and figuring that he and Miranda share that overly formal way of addressing one another, sometimes in a flirty way ("Still trying to maintain control, Ms. Lawson?") :P

I imagine if I ever actually wrote a story about Shepard, I would give him a first name that people use. Seems weird not to.

His first name is...Commander...:P

Assuming the character is trying to say the whole word  - L'tenan? That's the closest approximation I could get while trying to slur my words.

L'tenner is about as slurred as I can make it. Sounds like a French opera singer :P

They might twist the pronunciation into 'lyoo-tenant' or stumble at it, "Loo...loo-tenant. Lulu!"?

Of course, if they're British it's 'lef-tenant'. :P

I'm British and I don't say leftenant
The only people I've heard pronounce it that way have been military themselves.

I'm also not from the south so I don't pronounce everything with an r either

I'm British and it's 'left'enant.  You've obviously been watching too much US TV, now go and write 100 lines :P

But 'lulu' sounds good.

What is up with FF.net today? I liked those large paragraph gaps, worse is that they don't scale wiell with font size, which I have set high due to impaired eyesight.

They updated the site theme yesterday(notes on the update here) maybe that's what's causing problems for you? I find that everything looks...fuzzy now. Can't say I'm fond of the change.

Don't much like the change. Everything looked mush together even after adjustments. I don't suppose I have to leave double spacings between paragraphs now.

Sorry for the confusion regarding the 'leftenant' issue, forgot the poor colonials/french/probably-everyone-else-in-the-world thinks calling people  'loo' sounds respectful! Image IPB   (Toilet humour, so elegant, so sophisticated, so very British! Image IPB)   Also sorry nrobbiec I've always pronounced 'leftenant' as well but, more much importantly CONGRATULATIONS on crossing the finish line!  Image IPB
Anyway thought I'll post the paragraph in question and see if that can knock any more ideas loose so:

The wounded marine lifted her head, “I’m fine sir,” she slurred.  “Bastards only clipped me in the leg, it’s not even sore, not really.”  Vega leaned closer and saw her pupils where mere pinpricks, almost completely contracted as the pain control meds in the marine’s hard-suit flooded into her bloodstream.  Elizabeth Westmoreland gave a languid sigh then mumbled, “Your commander’s kinda comfy [to rest on, louie], but you’re better lookin’ really.”

PS:  You can tell I'm brave, because I am now going to run and hide before you realise I haven't thanked you for your suggestions!  Image IPB

PPS:  Thank you all for your suggestions! Image IPB

Ah. I think in that case she'd probably call him LT? It's sort of a standard informal way of referring to a lieutenant. Ashley does it to Kaidan through most of ME1.

Out of curiosity has there ever been a mention of a "Main Battle Tank" in the Systems Alliance arsenal. I know we have the Mako, but I imagined that to be the ME analogue to the modern day Striker.

The Mako is closer to the Striker Mobile Gun variant than anything else definitely. Higher speed, less armor, less expensive than an MBT. It's entirely possible that Mako's (and theie equivalents) are the primary ground fighting vehicle in the ME universe, though. With the raw firepower available with mass accelerators it might have been deemed impractical to develop a true MBT with the armor and barriers to withstand any sort of fire.

Especially considering the Mako's replacement is an even more lightly armored, fast moving amored vehicle.

I always figured the Mako was the main battle tank.  Even the APC's and such we see are modified Mako's.  I could see a proper battle tank being a reinforced Mako, or perhaps the "Grizzly" that Vega talks about with Cortez at one point.

No kidding

On a more ontopic note: it's question of the day time!

Today's question: have you ever written yourself into a corner?

When I first started Conversation in a Bar it was intended to be a one-off so I didn't put much thought into how what was being said would impact the story later - because I had never planned on writing any futher chapters. Now, 14 chapters later, I'm trying to write Akuze and I'm stuck writing around a sentence from that first chapter. And it's becoming something of a pain - leaving me two choices: keep trying to write around the orginial sentence, to the potential detriment of the story or go back and edit the original chapter.

So - have you ever done anything similar?
