This was at a storytelling thing, I was doing a tale about the sun and the moon.

Ah, that makes sense now.  Was wondering what the jacket had to do with anything what with being a performance and all.

Nah, was just a day out, thought it was a good excuse to wear it. Met someone who's girlfriend had acted with and kissed Mark Meer.

Well I'm stranded in Starbucks b/c I forgot my keys...so yay for phone responses. Also it's amazing how much a cliche I'm being right now. Writing in a coffee shop...Anyway. I'm...not totally comfortable with posting my face on the interwubs. For all intents and purposes my avatar is my face. That's why I use my dragon age char and not a ME char. And ignoring the face tattoo it's not a bad representation of what I look like IRL. (Yup, I'm a girl-folk. Mid-twenties and short.) I'm also of the opinion that unless you are in Scandanavia, Russia, Canada/ Northern US or Antarctica you're not allowed to complain about the cold. (Being Canadian myself - we may be polite but we're not especially sympathetic. )

To add: It's not you guys I don't trust with my photo (you all seem like a pretty trustworthy bunch) it's the internet in general. It's also time for a question of the day: how do you like to write? Paper and pencil/pen? Laptop? Desktop? Quill and parchment? Or maybe you use papyrus? Is there a time /place/ music /noiselevel you prefer?

I'll jot notes down on paper.
But I do all my writing on Daedalus, my lovely desktop. *pets computer*
I do 99.9% of writing in my room. Often with some music, but nothing too distracting. Just mood music.

I use different color pens and paper to jot down ideas, character traits etc. Or quotes that I've heard from tv shows/movies or when characters invade my thoughts and decide now was the time to talk to me. I think a lot about it at work and write down the idea when I can.

The majority of my writing is on the computer. It comes so easily and I can cut and paste move dialog and scenes around with ease.

I can't write or concentrate when there is noise, people talking in the background. I need it to be quiet. I find writing late at night to be a perfect time but not ideal if I have to get early for work. Other times, I will put earplugs in when I want to write.

Some times I'll listen to Mass Effect 2's soundtracks and more recently the Citadel DLC. "Citadel Underbelly" is a great song that I have looping over and over. This usually get's me in the mood to write.

Always good. :D

As for the question, I do my writing on PC. I have a 'notes' file and the main story document (from which I create individual ones for chapters when closer to completion on each). While I'm at work during the day, all sorts of ideas and things come to me, so I jot them down in a very rough form.

So, right now, I'm making sense of a piece of paper that says the following:
- He's become a little too much like you
- Let yourself take a physical beating but not an emotional one (both comments about Miranda, may not be used. Sometimes, just an idea of what to encapsulate in scene or dialogue)
- I'm OK on a warship, its not like I'm a space hamster or something. (rough Oriana dialogue, sly reference, as yet unused)
- Ryn - tracer signal (a reminder to myself that Miranda was using his setup to help boost the signal and track Kai Leng, and whether or not the Alliance find out about his involvement)
- Free bird (not the song! :P A little bit to add to a flashback, regarding evolution and emotions)
 - Chakwas 'believe' (just a dialogue correction. Figured she's more likely to say 'believe' instead of 'think' at one point)

So, you can see how scatterbrained I am. I think a large part of my problem is that I spend a lot of time thinking about the next chapter instead of the one I should be writing.

I'm a paper/notebook kind of girl (and I write in pencil). I used to use loose leaf because it was convenient and then it all started getting scattered and driving me nuts so I switched to notebooks - one for character notes and one for chapters. I've always found the writing process to be more natural to me if I'm physically writing things down as opposed to typing so most of what I write winds up on a page before it's typed.

Another part of my paper attachment is that I used to write on the bus to/from class. It was an 45 minute-hour long bus ride and my poor old laptop never would have lasted that long. I think that was the best place for me to write - I literally had nothing else to do at the time. I sometimes find it difficult to write at home because of all the other things I could be doing. I like thinking about what I'm going to write but I sometimes find the physical act of writing it out to be annoying. Or I can't get the ambient noise to be what I like. Libraries and coffee shops work better. Although now that I've discovered that I may be spending far less time at home...

As an aside: Akuze is kicking my butt again. I somehow have to make it emotional without making it overwrought and actiony without making it a Stallone movie. But I think I'm making progress...I think.

I'm lucky the Kaidan fanbase is really quite supportive and accepting. Though we are quite the minority apparently...

The way a lot of the fanbase (not all, but a lot) treats Kaidan drove me away from many of the general ME fan boards and so forth.  It really makes me sad because I think he's a great character, but there are places where voicing that opinion gets you eviscerated.  It's like, you don't like him, ok, do you have to go out of your way to be mean about it?  It's just a video game.  But I agree the Kaidan fanbase itself is awesome.

I love writing about him.  If I ever finish Beginnings (it's starting to feel like the song that never ends... 200k words and still only 2/3 of the way through, if that), I have a rough idea for a Jump Zero arc I'd really like to do.

Question 1: What inspired you to write your fanfic?

Question 2: Who is your Shepard and how did they come into being - did they pop into your head backstory fully formed, or did you develop that as you played? (If you have more than one - answer your canon/your fic Shep? If you don't have a canon Shep, pick your favourite? Or answer for them all!)

Kind of late to the party, but it's a great question so I figured I'd answer anyway.  XD

1) I started writing Aftermath because I couldn't deal with the way the original ending made me feel.  So I started writing as a way to exorcise those feelings.  Seems to be a very common theme.  I didn't have anything planned or sorted out for it and eventually got to a point where that was making it hard to continue, and by then I'd decided writing fanfic for ME was fun and become enamored of the idea of writing about my Shepard in ME1, so I started Beginnings.  If I ever get back to Aftermath I'd probably rewrite large portions of it.

2) My Shepard evolved from playing the game.  I had a rough idea in my head from putting together her background and also because I'd played part of ME2 before starting ME1, but it was very rough.  I filled in the details as I went along, and a lot of polishing happened with multiple playthroughs.  That's kind of the fun part of an RPG for me- filling in the blanks ths story leaves for you.  Figuring out how to connect stuff- like my Shepard had a biotic bonus ability in ME2, so I figured maybe she had some undiagnosed biotic sensitivity from being born on an old spaceship with a leaky drive core, and her cybernetics were acting as a surrogate implant.  One of the odd things about ME is the first Shepard I played was the one I got attached to.  Usually it takes a few characters for me to find one I really like.  (Though I do like my renegade Shepard quite a bit as well.)

I'm almost entirely electronic.  I store my files in dropbox and can access them from any of my computer devices.  I've even written the occasional passage on my phone, though I can't say I recommend that.  At least, not unless you are a much better/faster phone typist than I am.  I have a directory for each story, and each chapter is its own file, because I find I do way too much editing on stuff I've already posted if I don't organize it that way.  I also have a plot outline and a "random notes/scenes" file for each story.  My preference is to have a bit of background noise, usually in the form of a DVD I've already seen a dozen times, but I don't need it.

Well, after I completed ME3... my creativity... and the need for resolution (for Shepard/Miranda) kicked in high gear! It seriously prompted me to write the next story.

What the hell happened... An after the war type thing... It was just something that I needed to write and get off my chest. It now sits in a folder waiting for me. Not sure if it's related to "Escape" but it can certainly be molded to fit, no doubt.

Now that we have the Citadel DLC... :))

I did have all my chapters in one big file but since I've been re-working and uploading each chapter, I have each one a separate file. Original draft... revisied rough draft... and then the final version. I also have lots of pictures of people, places, food, drinks, buildings, etc to help me visualize. Character folders with written text... characteristics etc... a folder of ideas I haven't used/have/or think is really dumb. :)

Oh I get random thoughts on future chapters. I write down the idea and continue on what I need to do/setup/accomplish in the current chapter.

I just write on my desktop.  I'm a 'on the fly' kind of a writer and quite a quick typist and like the ability to shift text around easily.  Noise level has to be low for me, which usually ends up being like 2am so there's no through traffic.  I don't even like music playing if I'm in writing mode.

Kaidan's the main character now post-epilogue. Jump Zero will play a part in the first Spectre Alenko arc, I think there's a lot of potential to explore the consequences of those days.

...Yes.

Was that an anti-copying device or just a high school phase thing?

I was semi-obsessed with languages/linguistics in high school. I took two (all my schedule would allow) and read a lot outside of school. Making up my own writing system kind of flowed naturally out of that. It was more a creative experiment than anything else. Sadly "use or lose it" applies strongly to languages and I doubt I could remember much now. :(

I write when some images float to the top. Sometimes, if I cannot straighten out the chain of events in my head, I'll put it to pencil and paper. I usually do it with no noise level.

Well, I can write in Bengali, which is similar to Sanskrit...I suppose that comes close, as does Kanji and a lot of other languages from Asia.

PS: I dunno if I'd get much writing done in Hieroglyphics...it's like what Craig Ferguson said about writing an angry letter in the Middle Ages.

By the time you got done with the first 3 letters, you'd lose all patience, lol.

Ha, couldn't resist using a blunt Ship/person analogy like the one seen at the end of Serenity with Zoe. I wonder if it'll be as plainly obvious to the reader. :P

Essentially, it's:
"Why's it so dark in here? That's not good for morale."
"The Normandy was undergoing a retro-fit on Earth when the Reapers attacked. Other maintenance and repairs have since taken precedent."
That was months ago. I understand that the Normandy has been rushing about the galaxy, aiding the war effort, but you still have to look after your basic needs.
"Hey, Randa, want something to eat?"
"Not yet, I have something I need to do first."

So, QOTD, do you ever employ those sorts of literary techniques yourself? When, how, why? Share!

Metaphor is the filling in the pie of literature.
