Thread's slip sliding down the page so... random brainspew time!

We all seem like pretty like minded peoples around the writer's thread and I don't recall any 'incidents' like what happened particularly around the romance threads. So anyway, before Mass Effect and BSN, were you always a nerd/geek/fanatic when it comes to gaming and whatnot?

I've always been into sci-fi and gaming but coming to BSN opened my eyes to the strange world of 'fandom'. I'd never seen anything like it, the vitriole and passion that some of the other threads spilled, blind rage about fictional characters.

Then there was the tertiary exposure to new strange things, like My Little Pony... While I'm not a brony, I do have a morbid fascination with that stranger end of the nerd/geek/whatever world. Let's just say my YouTube suggestions list offers some very odd vids at times.

Fan Fiction? pfffft. That's what saddos with no life do in their bedrooms, gazing at their Fluttershy toys, while mom makes some poptarts downstairs. Haha!

It's been fun to jump into this world feet first. I mean not to belittle or deride our clan but it is a strange place.

Edit: Oh, and to be fair, I did do RPG gaming when I was younger so I did have credentials before hitting the BSN hehe.

Hi everyone!

I'm new to writing Mass Effect fanfictions, and I was wondering if any of you guys could give me some constructive criticism on this piece I wrote? http://www.fanfictio...Never-Lose-Hope   I had to write a short story for my high school Latin class last year and my teacher let me submit this piece of fanfiction.

Thank you in advance for any replies. :)

I was disappointed.  It's not written ALL in Latin.  ^_^

Had a quick read of the opening and scanned the rest but I'll read it properly before commenting apart from to say that your layout/formatting/grammar/punctuation/blah all seemed fine, though I'd expect that from a student of Latin.  So many ways to construct a sentence with experience of Latin.  I did 'A' Level Latin in Sixth Form (UK schooling system, 17-18 years) but did not finish it in the end.  Enjoyed it though.

Hahaha. I probably would write an entire story in Latin, but then it would sit unfinished for a while :P I hate the declensions. When I got the assignment to write the story with just Latin phrases, I was thrilled that I wouldn't have to decline any words. I digress, though.

Thanks for looking at it! Yeah, I write everything in novel format on MS Word, and I'll only post up pieces if I'm completely happy with them. I saw that Thane didn't have too much going for him on the FF.net archive (at least recently) and I wanted to give him some love. I'd like to do some proper ME fanfiction at some point, but I'm not really sure where to start. There are just so many things to choose from!

Just got find your 'angle' I suppose, whether re-tellings of the trilogy or something new.

Glad to seem I'm not the only one who felt it odd that the comments were slowing a bit.  Theen again, summertime tends to get in the way of such things.

I've always been into scifi and such.  Inhaled comics and Star Wars as a kid, a little bit of Trek as well.

I wouldn't say I went full geeky fanboy until college, whereupon RP's, writing, and trawling the internet were added to the mix.  I wrote my first fanfic in response to a class project, actually.

Played FF7 WAAAY after ps2 had been out.  My first fanfic involved that.  Then XBOX 360 got Mass Effect, which I bought b/c I had been a fan of KOTOR on the old XBOX.  The rest, as they say, is history.

My path of binge playing was a bit different though.  I'd always been into gaming, and was a big fan of point and click adventures and Wing Commander.

Came to console way late, as I said.  The RPG's that got me into RPG's were FF8 and Legend of Dragoon.  Then I found Morrowind....good god...

Anyhoo, I pray for the day someone makes a full conversion mod for Skyrim to make it look like Mass Effect (similar to what Blood Dragon seems to have done to Far Cry).

I've always approached games from a story POV first, and gaming second.  I suppose that's why I started writing my ME fanfics, as I don't want to say goodbye to the universe just yet.

My gaming life basically started as the industry started. Pong being my first experience, then Space Invaders, Donkey Kong, Defender, all the classics. Wasn't much room for stories in those days, though a friend and I are pretty sure that Pacman contains the first ever game cutscene... lol. Then onto home computing with the likes of Sinclair ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, Amstrad CPC464, playing games from bedroom 'developers'. Returned to the arcades for a while when I was living in Leicester, as they had a good one with free coffee on tap hehe. Street Fighter 2 became my new obsession and discovered Mad Dog Macree (great fun). Eventually did an IT course and became a PC man after seeing Doom 2, and the world of point n clickers like Day of the Tentacle, Indiana Jones and the Lost City of Atlantis, Grim Fandango, they don't make them like that any more!

Then one day, I saw there was a demo available on Steam for ME2, which some friends had said they were waiting for. I got the demo, played it, liked the look/design and the fighting, and bought ME2. d'oh, and might I add, D'OH! REALLY wish I'd known to play ME1 first. Normally, with most games it wouldn't really matter, but with this one, agh. Played ME2 to death then ME1 came up for £3.50 on Steam so I had to buy it. Dreamy. Hehe. Then re-playing ME2 with the ported character and all the differences that made, I have hundreds upon hundreds of hours played between ME1 and ME2. Dunno about anyone else, but when doing a full play through, ME1 is a breeze to play whereas ME2 always feels like more of a grind? Not so much the action but the interaction.

Then ME3.

It's all been said before.

So in the build up to ME3 I hung around here a bit to see what was going on, then hung around some more to join the b!tching about the disappointing finale to the tale, then saw the FF community going on here...

I'm sure I was going somewhere with that... ah well.

So here's another approach I am taking with my ME fics. I am avoiding sequels as mouch as possible. In fact, I am avoiding interquels as much as possible.

I rather prefer going alternate realities. For example, the current fic is a Broshep sequel to my adjusted ending, but the next story will be a Femshep aftermath.

How do the rest of you approach it? Is each story a part of a whole? Are they sequels in a series? Or perhaps it's like Final Fantasy? Similiarities exist, but they don't having bearing on each other?

I have a 'main' ME fic that is linear (followed trilogy arcs and now beyond) but I have a side-line in AU tales so that I can realise other ideas I have outside my main.  I find this works well.  Stops irrelevant bits and bobs being forced into my main story.

To answer your earlier queries, MrStoob:

I'd never really be in a 'fandom' before. Sure, I'm a fan of certain things (usually comic-related stuff or films and TV shows, in general) but not so much as to participate on forums. Never really got into anything at a hardcore fan level; just sort of drifted between things. I've always been too dumb to be really nerdy or just never had the right friends. I am a real-life Inbetweener.

My story is a little similar to yours, except I started participating a little later. I only came to BSN after beating ME3 and just looking for...more? I can't remember exactly why I came, but it was probably to do with seeing what other people had to say about the games. Then I got mixed up with you guys. :P

Can't really be bothered with the rest of the forums, especially since the character stuff got closed and they started banning people like lillitheris. They're a complete waste of time for anything resembling decent discussion. There are some smart people out there, with good ideas and polite approaches, but it all gets buried among the "ME1/ME2 sucks and that's what was really wrong" or "Your ending means you like to kill puppies/let the Reapers win" bollocks.

Anyway, yeah, before coming here I'd never attempted anything like fanfiction either. I still feel that I treat it differently than some people (not that I'd ever consider myself 'above' anyone) in that I'm cutting my teeth on it rather than it becoming a full-time hobby. Still, regardless of that, it's a lot of fun discussing stuff with all you guys, discovering new things and perspectives on the ME universe! Thank god everyone here is so nice.

Also, MrStoob, I went to uni in Leicester! And I find ME1 more of a slog than ME2 (surprise, surprise), but still enjoyable nonetheless.

And in writing-related news: finally got my latest chapter out the other day, and from the feedback I've received, it seems the bit I was kinda worried about didn't actually faze anyone, so that's cool.

I guess that's one of those old typical things for writers. You fuss over something, but then no one reading it does and instead finds fault with something else you thought was OK. :P

Since I'm doing  what is essentially a giant character study on ParagadeFemShep (oversimplified, but w/e), most of the stories I have planned are directly linked to one another.  Unfortunatley, since each story deals with and expands on a different facet of her personality, it can't all fit in one single fic and still make sense.  So, yeah.  It's all interquels/prequels/sequels for me.

That being said, it's a very interesting challenge to create a series of stories that the audience can read in any order and still understand the importance of each part.  I mean, I DO have a read-order, but still...

Yup, I got that earlier. Now the site is just slow / refuse to load

On fanfiction, I'm just doing a After ME 3 and throwing whatever I don't like about the 3rd game off the ship. It's less romance and more SF/adventure which deals with "state-of-galactic-affairs" so I'm covering a very wide canvas. Actually, half of that since I've chosen to focus on asari, humans and a sprinkling on the rest.

As such, I warp to places/people unexpectedly. I don't have much of a choice really. The prospect of building properly with suitable layering would rack up a lot of chapters. It's beyond my staying power / ability.

To date, I've one reviewer who said I'm half incoherent. The others seem to have no problems so I guess I'm not that terribly incomprehensible. I do know, in going over early chapters, of the lacks. I also know, there are sections that would be better if they appear early, as the new chapter i'm working on now. But it can't be helped. I'm writing on the fly. I might even call it a beta version of the actual story. Heh.

Perhaps, when the story is done, I would revise it completely and put the pieces where they belong. In future.

I feel like that to some extent.  I'm an 'on the fly' writer also, which for me can get you in a muddle or painted into a corner you just didn't see coming sometimes but also fun as the mood of a scene can take it to a place you hadn't consciously thought of before.

I've started the process of re-jigging my first main 'Blue', adding some of the one-shots that I'd written after the fact, tidying up chapter sizes/spillage, dropping bits I didn't like, etc.  I think I'm about a third of the way through until I have to go back to the beginning and read it all again.  Again.  Hehe.  As much as I like my own writing, reading it again and again for errors and tidying can be a slog.

Tell me about it Posted Image. I'm also really sensitive to criticism too, even though I know it's meant to help me improve - I'm also grateful that people take the time to read my story and leave comments (if their brains haven't numbed from boredom by that time).

Anyways I've finally managed to finish the chapter I've been working on since November 2012 (Posted Image). But even though I thought I'd be ecstatic and jumping for joy, I just kind of feel subdued. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that it feels incomplete.

It was only at the weekend that I looked at my endless pages of incoherent drivel and realised that, actually, I was dealing with two chapters instead of one. So I split it down the middle, and, voila - one chapter pressed and ready to go. The first half of what was originally one chapter is still just the boring, setting-the-scene stuff - the action comes in the second part (now a separate chapter) which isn't quite ready to be published yet.

So I feel...annoyed and frustrated with myself. To top it all off; I have reservations about publishing the one that's ready. I think it's wise to spend some time with it, just looking it over and making sure it's okay (I have a notoriously bad memory and I worry sometimes that I've forgotten to follow up plot points that I've started in earlier chapters).

Hey, it's taken me over six months to write, so I figure that holding it back for a few more days won't kill me. I only hope (fingers crossed) that my next two chapters are worth the ridiculous struggle I've been through to write them. Posted Image

Well I sat on my chapter for 24 hours and proof-read it to the best of my ability before publishing. I guess it's out of my hands now Posted Image.

Now I feel nervous and sick to my stomach Posted Image. Does anyone else get this feeling whenever they publish? I think it definitely contributed to my lack of publishing these last months - I like to feel safe and cushy. I really hate this feeling of anxiety...

I feel relieved once I publish a chapter. I know that I probably made mistakes, but feel good that I managed to get another chapter out to the readers. I always beat myself up when I don't publish at least once or twice a week.

I do have some concern if what I've written is any good or good enough, expressed what I really wanted to say, detailed enough, and how the people will take it, interpet it.

Having said all that... just do the best you can (AustereLemur799) and go from there. You can always modify parts you didn't think was told well by the feedback you get or don't get(that will make it even more hard to judge what's working and not.) It takes a lot of guts to post your work. You did the hard part taking the first step. Congratulate yourself.

Now, if only I could get chapter 30 done! Some parts are still bugging me.

Mostly juggling one character's perspective (Ashley's) vs (Shepards) and trying to keep his love(Miranda) from getting any repricussions(spelling?) from what happened... *pulls hair* :pinched:

The story took a twist that I wasn't planning on til later but whatever... got to deal with it now. *laughs*

As to posting new chapters...  Yes, a sense of relief comes after finishing up and publishing it.

Thanks very much Posted Image. And you're right!

Writing things from different perspectives can sometimes get jumbled and sometimes need re-writes (at least in my case). It took a friend to mention a certain idea to me that caused me to re-write an entire scene from a different perspecitve; but it defintely worked out better than I could have ever imagined!

Anyway, it sounds as though you've had some sponteneity - which is always a blessing!

I can't say that I feel relieved for publishing, no matter how much of a personal achievement it is for me. I just feel so sick and I can't ever get over that...

How does this divide your time? - Do you have one story which is your main?

I have a few things on the go at the same time.  There is a 'main' yes, but I usually write whichever one I've had inspiration for.  I don't have a 'plan' as such, so no self-imposed deadlines or anything so it works out okay for me.  Currently, I've an ME trilogy sequel, another ME post-war thingy, a Skyrim thing, Mass Effect one-shots and Skyrim one-shots.  Some are more developed than others, as I thought I knew where it was going so posted my initial musings then zilch lol.

That said, I've not written much in a while...

I would love to publish more stories, but I just don't have anything completed to a presentable standard.

Something that wasn't my main work would have to be shorter, I think. In an ideal world, I'd love to be able to write short stories and one-shots; but I'm not that kind of writer. I don't know, but I think it's a specific skill - one which I clearly lack Posted Image. I envy all the people who do specials on days like Christmas or Valentines Day - I wish I was capable of coming up with cool one-shot features like that.

Hey, I've spent the last six or seven months tripping over myself on one chapter (it's now become two, but that's not the point). My problem is and always has been that I can't ever finish anything because I lack the confidence and assertiveness to actually make a final decision.

I've got lots of Mass Effect stuff knocking about on my laptop. I'd also love to write stories for Stargate: Atlantis, Skyrim and Fallout 3 but I think I'm as likely to win millions on the lottery before that happens Posted Image.

Happily though, there's a lot of diversity in the fanfiction world and other people have already written stories so that I don't have to! Posted Image

It was so much easier being at an age where I could play with toys to act out my imagination - writing definitely replaced that.

Haven't done a 'themed' one-shot like you mention there, Xmas/Valentines. What's coming up soon? Hmmm, Summer Solstice. Possible potential there... hehe.

My Skyrim tale started out as a couple of one-shots (with an excuse to include a silly rugby-type song I'd written 'The Girls of Solitude'), but then it sorta expanded as I developed the Dragonborn character from an actual game character I RP'd (deranged vampire). That one's sorta in cliff hanger at the moment and I haven't really decided how to resolve it. I'm considering a sad abrupt ending, but even torn which one as I have a couple of ideas on that. Anyhoo, so many ideas, so little written down...

But these days, I give less of a crap about just chucking my stuff out there, sometimes even half-finished ideas.

'Finally figured out that chapter that had been dogging me. Needs review/edit now, but will likely go up today.

Technically the story is complete once I do that, but I do plan on one more chapter for an epilogue.

'Not absolutely necessary, but it'll wrap things up more nicely than ending the piece without it.
