oh. spent a lot longer than I thought editing that last post... can't remember what it was originally now... lol

Anyway, yea, I see what you mean now. '...and the rest of them...'

Top post comes around quick at the mo... lemme see... hmmm....
I thiiiiiink.... that one'll do:

...

"I've perfected my special sauce." James announces in a sing-song voice. "You won't even care that you're not eating meat, I guarantee it. I was thinking... barbecue? A few onion and squash kebabs with my special sauce on and I believe Mister Donnelly can confirm, a few drinkies to go with?"

"Aye, confirm that I can, Mister Vega. It's no for the feint hearted, but it trickles into all the right places."

"Now, Garrus," James turns to him quite seriously, "I would like for you and Tali to be able to at least experience some small element of my masterpiece, so, I am willing to share this recipe. With you. So that you might create a suitable equivalent, for you, and your good lady."

"Well I'm..." Garrus begins.

"However, I must say!" James interrupts, a finger now pointed upwards, his other hand on his chest, "On your word of honour, you must take this recipe to your grave, lest, I put you there myself." the finger drops into a pistol position, pointed at Garrus.

"Wild varren shall not tear this recipe from me," Garrus joins in the charade, "even on my deathbed, while my good lady pleads, that she might still know happiness from its taste in my absence..."

"Garrus!"

"...I shall not divulge this most honoured list of ingredients."

"Ha!" James shouts, "Then might I be the first to say, paaartay!"

Well when I'm wrong - I'm wrong. It's not as if that's never happened to me before. Posted ImagePerhaps I should have separated the bit about young Shep from what followed (ie full stop. Next sentence), or just used a different choice of wording - anyways sorry! Posted Image

@MrStoob - feart (afraid - Scottish collq.) I wonder where that word comes from? Posted Image

@YurigirlzCrush - funny story (sadly true) I did actually need an occasional translator (my younger sister) for a while when I first moved home in the UK. I'm starting to think -maybe- I should have been nicer to her!  Posted Image

I assumed that it was 'feint' as in to fade away, rather than 'faint' the action of passing out. There you go, eh. Learn something new every day.

@Fatigues: From gaelic, I would imagine.  Though probably a bastardised version of 'afeared'.  Edit: quick scan of the old google (wiki):

Scots:
Noun
fear (plural fears)

fear

Verb
tae fear (third-person singular simple present fearspresent participle fearinsimple past feartpast participle feart)

to fear, to frighten, scare

Aw, trying to find this lovely poem I saw on TV years ago. It starts in broad scots, using all their wackier colloquialisms, a wee lass describing her first day of school, very sweet and all that, then it sort of takes a dark turn. '...where they taught how me to say...' and then it describes the same scene all in perfect English to '...where I forgot how to say...' then back into scots and the same again. There was issue at certain points in time with the Scots feeling like their culture was being eroded by the English, including their colloquialisms, which they are fairly proud of.

WEE, sleekit, cow'rin', tim'rous beastie,. O what a panic's in thy breastie!

I did Robbie Burns for English GCSE, hard work getting through some of that. I think Latin was easier lol.

Faint is also to do with fading away or being difficult to detect, e.g. his voice became faint.

Feint is to deceive. :P

Once again, I thought the tactical move of 'feint' was more like hit and fade (hence my fade misunderstanding). You know, maybe I should just stick to scouse... like.

does anyone happen to be paying attention to this thread at this precise moment? I just wrote a prologue for something entirely unrelated to Mass Effect, and was hoping someone might have the time to peruse the (extremely) rough draft and answer a question/give thoughts... It's pretty short. About 1,200 words.

Send me a pm, Yuri, if you're not sorted yet. I've some time for a perusal.

Looked up the bane of your existence, Ralph.  Oh that Disney thing?  *Sighs a long sigh*

Do you not have the power of the elder sibling to resolve these matters?   Though to be fair, you don't come across as the bullying type. :kissing:

Started re-jigging the boring exposition bits. Worked out a way of doing it now I think'll work okay. As the Normandy is separate from the combined fleet at the start and the reasons are tied to how the 'end' played out, when I cover scenes of their exploits I drop the odd snippet in about how that came about. Things that affected Shepard and all that side of it, I'll drop in in larger chunks in fleet based scenes. I should get the background I need into the tale in enough time, without throwing it all in one go. Some of the Shepard stuff really needs to be one section for me so still pondering that one.

+1 for perusal, if you want to PM me.

I have free time, now that I beat "Beyond Two Souls."  It's a great story, with multiple satisfying endings.

Main drawback is that it's severely lacking in actual "gameplay."  Barring one sleath/shooter level and a pre-order only DLC (puzzle/platforming level), there is hardly any interaction outside of QTE's.

I liked it, and I'd like to see the sequel they hinted at near the end, but it really isn't worth full price.

Lore query please.

Dextros/Non-dextros and water. Is there a problem there? I would have thought water would be pretty universal but...? Any know more solidly?

Water is universal. Turians, quarians, krogan, humans, asari, drell, we all drink water. It doesn't matter if you're dextro or non dextro.
And, a question of the day for people since we haven't had one in a while. What is the chapter in what you've written that was just the most fun to write?
I'll do one for each of my fics.
Meus Mundus. So far the most fun chapter was the last chapter I put up, as it was the start of the Suicide Mission.
Crucible Effect. This one was chapter 8 by my reckoning since I had a prologue as chapter 1 according to ff.net. Anyways, I enjoyed writing it so much because I had Shepard kill Liara for not getting the hint. (Shepard had made it very clear she wasn't interested. Liara wouldn't listen. Shepard didn't have time to deal with it.)
Beyond the Light and the Dark. Chapter twelve according to FF.net was my favorite, as I was able to put in a reference of the Forest Fight from Transformers Revenge of the Fallen.
And, as a bonus question, who is your favorite Mass Effect character? Be they LI, squaddie, or just a plain old boring NPC.

no, I would never bully my baby sis. Lisa (my next younger sister, who is 18), sure. but not Heather (6, the Wreck-It Ralph maniac) or Jess (9). I really should put my foot down tho and kick her out of my room the next time she wakes me up at the crack of dawn to watch that stupid movie. I've lost count of how many consecutive days it's been now. *sigh*

the groundskeeper in ME2 mentions that the water is carefully filtered and purified because if a quarian or turian drank water with non-dextro microbes in it, it could cause problems. (unless i'm remembering wrong which is entirely possible) but it seems to imply that the water usage is universal.

and thanks for the offers of perusal of my little prologue. i'll send PMs to both of you if neither of you minds. if the offer is no longer open (I know yours was made like five hours ago, Stoob) then that's fine. just say so. *smiles*

@Ignus: can't really say for the fun chapters bit because I haven't actually published anything yet. but as for favorite characters? Tali and Liara! pretty much equal tie there. I adore them both. And Taliara... well, I mentioned that pairing recently. *dreams*

I would add that the whole dextro thing might not affect quite as much food as they seem to suggest in the game, unless there's more to it than just the DNA (ie: they can't break down certain chemicals...like how cyanide might be a garnish for one species as opposed to poison for humans).

I wouldn't call it my favorite, but one of the more fun moments I had came after watching a season of "Spartacus" for research.  I basically wrote a scene where Shep had to enter a gladiatorial fight with no projectile weapons.  It was amusing to write from the perspective of a man who had been in so much war, but still balked at the prospect of killing others with his bare hands.  It certainly offered a vantage point for unique commentary...how far has culture REALLY advanced?

I haven't written it perfectly yet, but I also enjoyed writing Shepard's capture, torture, and rescue from the batarians.  It offered me justification for how I developed the romances.  I'm almost satisfied, because if done right, it becomes very clear why it HAS to be the way I wrote it.

My FAVORITE scene would have to be the battle and subsequent romance scene between Falere and Kolyat, because my beta reader called me and flipped out over it.  It was immensely satisfying.  I broke the poor girl, she was literally stammering gibberish for several minutes!

 Yes, I am an evil bastitch...

Disregarding Shepard, I probably like Garrus and Jack the best.

Cheers on the water thing, thought there shouldn't be any probs but microbes and plankton would affect things, so something to think about.

Favourite 'fun to write' chapters?  Hmmm, define 'fun' hehe.  I most 'enjoy' writing chapters that I think are really going to kick the reader in the nuts, gut them a little, and ultimately, cry (I've had reports of success on that, so yay!  weep you bastards!).  When I'm on a roll with such a chapter, and the words are flowing, finding just the right way to say what I want to say, now that's fun.  :)

More traditional 'fun', probably the Ashley and Sha'li (OC, Ash's adoptive asari daughter) sections, and creating a mother/daughter dynamic and the humour that can ensure, particularly as Sha'li is at 'that age' in a young person's life (teens equivalent).  In one chapt, they were flying back to the fleet (FTL, long journey), just them two and the ship's AI (don't ask...), so I have them singing round robin songs (Row your boat, London's Burning) and some embarrassing mother / daughter chat about boys.  That was fun.
"Not having this conversation with you, mum."

Favourite character... my heart says Liara, my angst says Samara.  The Liara one's pretty obvious <3, particularly ME1 Liara, but Samara, I really felt for her and her plight.  Certain conversations when she shuts down and looks to the floor, still unable to cope with what happened to her and her daughters, so much underneath those deep waters untapped.  My fic deals mainly with Shep/Liara/Ash but Samara's tale has always had a thread in my story as she seeks to resolve all the hatred and killing she performed in the name of the Code, but really she knows it was to release her demons and anger at the galaxy for what it did to her.  My slant there ofc, but I liked it and made for some good writing ideas.  I've allowed her some peace at times, even a relationship (Anaya) but she's always going to be restless.

I've just had a terrible revelation. Dunno if anyone else has ever done this but I've just realised who my Shepard actually is, who the person is in my mind as t'were, a person from my real life. It was just an innocuous scene of Liara/Samara/not-Miranda having a laugh and a drink, then Shepard enters and sort of breaks up the party (not harshly, carries drunken silly Liara away). The moment she entered the scene it hit me in the face real hard, and it's a confusing one. I don't quite feel like I need detol and a wire brush anyway, I'm just glad romantic scenes concentrate more on Liara.

@Stoob: is this anything like being on a date with someone and realizing that they remind you a lot of your sister? *frowns* that was the very last date I had with that person. nice as she was, that is not a parallel I wanted in my head with someone I was dating.

@Samara: I always liked Samara as a character, but one thing that drives me nuts is stories that pair her with Shepard. I normally side with odd pairings between characters or things that weren't possible in the games, but in her case, I feel that if you take away her self-imposed solitude because her daughters were all ardat-yakshi, you take away a huge part of what made her interesting to me. sort of like curing Thane. it's great that people love him and want him around, but if you take away the terminal illness and his desire to repent and find peace before he dies, he becomes infinitely less interesting.

None of them! All writing is an arduous slog to get words on a page. :P

However, my last chapter was the most fun in some places...since it was meant that way, but I can't say any one chapter feels fun as a whole. I put a lot of (too much) thought into everything, so there's just plenty of agonising. Even when I'm trying to write 'light' it can feel indulgent.

Otherwise, there are 'fun' sections in all chapters. I really like the exchanges between Miranda and Erin in chapter 12 (the bad penny, house of cards stuff), the massive fight with Kai Leng was ultimately worth the effort, and I felt one of Miranda's flashbacks was fairly powerful. I suppose I have a warped idea of fun...

As for favourite Mass Effect character, well, that's obvious, but I also have a lot of love for Wrex, Mordin, Grunt and Jack.

Yes, it is very much like that lol.  But thankfully, I've not had a kind of a 'relationship' with my Shepard, she's always been pretty neutral to me so that's something.  Yes, it seems I've re-created my mother.

Oi!  Freud, you can shut up an' all!

It's funny, but in the original ME, I always felt weird seeing Shep's (male or female) naked ass. I dunno, I suppose they were such a cypher, it was jarring to see. Subsequent ME's differentiated the character to the point that I felt he/she was truly formed and original.

They were distinct and not a part of me, I was just adding flourish. This isn't meant as a negative, just how ME1 I felt more inside their head, and ME2-3 took me out of that perspective and into another.

Don't worry, work is just the same.  Well, when you've got a job.  Otherwise you just spend your time knowing there are probably things you should be doing but prevaricate and probably get less done.

Mwahahaahaaha. You all answered the favorite character question how I guessed you would. (except for you stoob! Curse you! I wasn't expecting the Samara bit.). Anyways, this has been useful in creating your psychological profiles and the government has decided you must be purged. Please do not run from the men in suits. Just kidding.
Oh, before today's question, Hotheart, agree with you there on the characters.
Now, the question of the day. If you were given a temp job as a writer at Bioware to work on a remake of ME3, but were told you had to kill off at least one of the main side characters, who would you kill? Personally, I would kill Liara in a rain of nuclear fire.

i'd kill Samara. and Miranda! and jack! and... hmm... who else's favorite characters could I slay? *grins*

kidding. in all seriousness, prolly Jacob. he was never all that interesting to me anyway. although I would assume there would have to be a reason for it, not just because you don't like them. killing off a character just because you don't like them or otherwise butchering their character for the same reason seems a little... I dunno... sketchy?

and honestly, I don't think I could come up with a good reason to kill off Jacob. so... hmm... *ponders* even though he's like my third-fav, maybe Garrus? he seems like a good choice to like... hold back an endless tide of reaper troops to buy Shepard the time to do something important... like a heroic last stand. I could totes see him entrenched somewhere, headshotting reapers until there are too many and then going all omniblade ninja on them until they take him down.

Hrm...I'd need a good reason to kill one of them. I'd probably do something with Garrus, because I think he would be one of the better fits for a death, especially if data from the previous game could be taken as well as some in-game ME3 stuff determining if he has a traditional turian hero's death, or whether he dies more like the vigilante rogue we saw at the start of ME2. I think it could be an emotional moment, and his character's backstory would provide enough material so that he wouldn't just be thrown away, but would be a moderately critical part of the progression of the game.

Can't really think of much else. Wrex during the Kalros fight maybe? That's all I can consider if you count the existing me3 death possibilities as well.
