@YurigirlzCrush - Ah, one day hangovers.  I remember those - I really miss them right about now!  Posted Image
@MrStoob - Can't really answer your question.  The only small cameo I've written so far was Feron - and he promptly died (I feel bad about that).  As for Sherlock/Doctor Who - haven't watched the former (after season one) and the latter, well you say 'fanfiction' - I'd say it's more 'BBC kiddies' mentality. Sidebar:  Posting a little one shot that came about from something lillitheris said back near the start of the thread about gender specific (adjectives? pronouns?) something like that.  So I've tried writing something that's supposed to be fluffy, sweet, romantic (admittedly not my usual haunts) without actually identifying anyone, barring a certain Spectre's name, not entirely sure it works though.
Oh finally, Happy something something (and who's turned up the brightness on my screen, it's like looking into the sun or something here Posted Image- where did I put those sunglasses? Posted Image Why is the world spinning? Posted Image When did people decide to shout every, single, word? Posted Image Which idiot decided that drinking on Hogmanay was a good idea? Posted Image Ok the last one may Posted Imagehave been me - but the rest aren't my fault.  I swear!)

I could use some help with a DA fanfic I'm writing. I would have posted this in the DA forums if they weren't so much like a ghost town.

The fanfic I'm writing has one Warden for each origin (male Dalish elf, female elf mage, male city elf, male dwarf noble. female dwarf commoner, male human noble and female human mage) and I want Brosca and Aeducan to end up together, but the return to Orzammar will be a huge obstacle for them because Aeducan has obvious reasons to be against Bhelen and Brosca's sister, Rica, is married to him and had his son, so she would have to side with Bhelen for Rica's sake.

The problem I have is that I can't seem to think of a way to resolve Orzammar without one of them ending up dead... and I really DON'T want to do that. Can anyone help me out?

Why not have Branka or Caridin recommend Aeducan for king? Although he's been removed from the memories, would the dwarves go against the word of their Paragons?

Bhelen and Harrowmont can attack and get killed, Aeducan can clear his name, and pull an Alistair. Aeducan can make any changes to ensure Rica's safety and Brosca's happiness.

Oh, yea, that reminds me...  Torchwood.  When that first appeared on our screens, it was totally adult.  Swearing, sexy succubi, 'adult themes', etc, etc and was quite interesting.  As soon as they found out that children were watching (due to obviously being interested in the new Dr Who incarnation and hype), it was all wholesale changed and turned into the 'kiddie show' it became.  Annoying.

Are they both Wardens?

I'm sorry if this sounds simplistic, but while it's obviously an emotionally complicated situation, I'm not sure it's all that politically complicated.  But it depends a bit on how you're writing each character.

Preseumably they both still value their identities as dwarves.  Aeducan's issues with Bhelen might not outweigh a) their desire for their relationship with Brosca to be legitimized, difficult given how the casteless are currently regarded; B) the mental health and happiness of Brosca.  What Bhelen did is perhaps unforgiveable, but it's not necessarily not understandable.  Aeducan was weaned on political intrigue and backstabbing.  Some Aeducans would've done the same thing in Bhelen's place.  It's possible for Aeducan to see it as being outmaneuvered politically first and foremost, and as a personal matter second.

And now that Aeducan (and Brosca) are Wardens, there's no political stake left for either in Orzammar.  All they can do is negotiate the best possible position for fighting the Blight.  Bhelen won their little game by default when Aeducan was forced to abdicate any claims due to their Warden allegiance.  (Yes, I know the rules are bent for Alistair and could be bent for Aeducan, but if you're looking for a way out, it works.)  Also, Aeducan is probably not the same person who was run out of Orzammar.  They may have realized that there are things a hell of a lot more important than who rules this city, or that they're happier on the surface than they ever were down below.  I could even see an Aeducan eventually looking on Bhelen with pity- or even siding with him on the theory that they're giving him just enough rope to hang himself, and revenge is much sweeter when it's self-inflicted.

Brosca, however, unlike Aeducan probably puts family before everything else.  It's all they had.  I can't really see a way they side with Harrowmont unless you wrote in some provision for Rica's protection.  (Which Harrowmont may or may not honor- it would make an interesting story if Brosca gets talked into it on this basis, only to be stabbed in the back after it's too late to change their mind.)

Anyway, a bunch of rambling thoughts, but I hope it might help you out a bit.  :)

Interesting, but I'm taking my Wardens from actual playthroughs and Aeducan sided with Harrowmont because he didn't care that Bhelen killing Trian and framing him was 'just politics' and took it personally.  I had planned to choose Bhelen with Brosca and the fact that Rica ended up with him only made it easier.  In fact, it would have been much harder to back Harrowmont with Brosca than with any of my non-dwarf Wardens, considering how they have no history with Orzammar and have to take everyone at their word.

I honestly don't see Harrowmont going back on his word... but, I don't see him being able to convince Brosca to work with him in the first place.  I'm also going to have it where Aeducan doesn't mention what happened to him to anyone other than Duncan.  So when Brosca finds out, she's going to be hurt that he didn't trust her enough to tell her.  This could probably provide more of a reason for her to side with Bhelen.

I mean, if I made Aeducan a little more on the pragmatic side, I could see him possibly siding with Bhelen, maybe because the ease that Bhelen demonstrated in removing both him and Trian in one swoop shows that he can get things done.  Other than that, I'm not sure I could make that work without him making a 180 right then and there.

Bhelen and Harrowmont can attack and get killed, Aeducan can clear his name, and pull an Alistair. Aeducan can make any changes to ensure Rica's safety and Brosca's happiness.

The thing is... Brosca and Aeducan are going to have differing opinions on the Branka/Caridin problem too.  Brosca is going to want to side with Branka because golems.  Aeducan is going to side with Caridin because Branka is insane.  This, however, I can solve peacefully.  I just have to figure out which way I'd go with it.

As for making Aeducan king... I don't see Harrowmont attacking, Paragon influence or no.  And Bhelen... I have no idea how he would react to that.  He is probably so focused on keeping Harrowmont from the throne that he won't expect Aeducan throwing his hat into the ring with the support of a Paragon.  I might be able to make that work, but... I don't really know for sure.

I'll need to think on this more...

Just wanted to drop in, say hello to everyone, and bump the thread a bit!

Oh, and while I'm at it: does anyone else just write a placeholder chapter and come back to rewrite it later? I sometimes do this on tough-to-write chapters, as I find it easier to tweak and edit something into good shape, even if it started off lackluster.

I've not done exactly this, but sometimes a chapter needs to... marinate a bit, so I'll go on to writing the next one and come back to it after a week or two to sort it out.  And yeah totally agree sometimes you need to edit and rewrite something into shape, sometimes extensively.  At least if I'm putting **** on the screen it's something to work with, unlike waiting around for inspiration or insight. :P

hmm. apparently all my chapters are placeholders! *frowns* I have an outline, but when I write each part I try not to agonize too much over exactly what I'm writing. I have a lot of repeated information and reused words and phrases and all. but once I have it written, then I plan to go back through each chapter and basically rewrite each one (not completely, but there will be lots of reorganizing, deleting, rewording, etc.). I've been calling them rough drafts. but apparently they're placeholders! *grins*

Hello, all! Happy new year, if I haven't already said as much. :)

Oddly enough, I don't tend to rewrite much of anything of mine. So far, that's been limited to my main ME fic due to accidental errors messing up future chapters, and some other fics just not being good enough on their own, so I merge them in a way to make a more digestible whole.

In other news, I've been on an idea-forming roll lately, and have accidentally shunned the writing process to outline ideas for new fics I have no time to write at the moment, even if one of my new Mass Effect related ones is rather compelling and intriguing. Gotta finish Feathers first before i can touch it :\\ Which probably means I need to make a decision I really didn't want to make. Alas, the trials of being a hobby writer.

I feel your pain! *hugs* I'm trying really hard to concentrate on two fanfics and leave all the other ideas until after I finish something. but I get more ideas every week. I have like 9 outlines now. two for Mass Effect, two Dragon Age, one for the Walking Dead, one Bubblegum Crisis, one K-On!, one Law & Order: SVU, and now one for Clue... *sheepish*

on a side note... the cold is really killing my ability to write anything. games I can do. The Xbox controller works through all three of the blankets on my bed. but to write I actually have to be partially uncovered and even with multiple layers of clothes my hands go numb and I'm shivering within minutes. *pout*

I posted earlier, wrote one paragraph, and retreated to the warmth of my bed. now I'm back and already starting to shiver. it doesn't help that my room has horrible, horrible insulation. the thermostat goes to 58 after 10pm and I think in my room it has to be closer to 52. *shivers* maybe less...

I wouldn't call simple editing "placeholder," so don't feel too bad!  For me, I meant I was writing chapters that I knew to be subpar, but I just needed to get something out, and beat it into shape later.  As artists, we can't help but modify and attempt to improve upon our works.  The catch is knowing when it's enough.

As for feeling cold, I totally bought a personal space heater to bypass having the coldest room in the house.  The ones that looks like a radiator don't tax the electric bill, like the fan units do.

fluffywalrus: I totally homogenize or co-opt pieces of my other work when I need to.  Per the previous comment, in extreme cases, I have actually looked at my other stories, then adjusted bits of them to fit the current story.  I primarily do it for the fighting scenes.

The result, thankfully, looks nothing like what I based it on, but the feeling is there.  Also, it makes those tough chapters a lot easier to write.  Granted, it's a lot easier now that I have several stories under my belt.  I'd never dream of doing this with other authors' works, for fear of potential plagiarism.

To be fair, however, I just write repositories of scenes, which serve as shorthand/placeholders on subsequent projects.  It makes things a lot easier on me.  I must have dozens of go-to snippets that are never part of a whole story, yet influence bits of every work I do.

On the other hand, I will totally watch a movie/read a story/listen to a song to get me into whatever mood I want in my mindspace when writing chapters, assuming I need it.

Hmm... not really, Though, sometimes I let my imagination wonder when I'm writing one chapter and when I get to writing the next, which is usually planned ahead of time, I end up having problems because what I originally had planned contradicts the previous chapter, so I have to rethink it. This happens more often than you'd think. Also, the fact that I have four fanfics I'm working on, three of which are for DA, I end up focusing on one and nearly forget about the others. I also have three other fanfics that I'm trying to get off the ground, and the ideas I have for them conflict with my plans for my main ones. I simply have too many ideas to keep straight!

Eesh, I feel your pain. Growing up, I lived in a house that honestly wasn't really built with functioning insulation in many of its walls. The roof was insulated, and the living room wall facing the street, but I think that was pretty much it. And just before my eighth birthday, the ventilation shaft for AC and heat to my room got dislodged, and left a gaping four and a half foot gap between both ends. So my childhood, growing up? Blazing hot in the summer, freezing cold in the winter. I used to move my computer nearby and run it as hot as I could without frying anything, just to get some heat into my room. (used to have a space heater, friend's family borrowed it and forgot they borrowed it, so that ended up being a waste of my money...life lesson learned, though) Even here in ottawa, my current place gets chilly, it's an old building with drafty as hell windows, but the internal ambient temp's usually running between 18 and 20C during the day. So I'm at least comfortable most days, and blankets help, as my torso is a living furnace, and I can bury myself under a blanket, and a few minutes later be much, much warmer. I suppose I'm lucky in that regard.

My advice? Get that weird saran wrap-like plastic sealing stuff for your windows, that might really help. A small space heater could be useful too, if you can afford one (I know they can be pricey). Writing in the cold is never all that fun, I got fingerless gloves for that so that I can type while at least having some part of my hand a little warmer.

And wow, yeah, kinda the same boat as me with outlines. I'm surprised, an SVU one? Love the show the death, even if my family hates it :P Lots of interesting concepts that they deal with throughout the series, and there's such a good cast! And...well...Diane Neal is ridiculously pretty, so maybe there's a slight eye candy element there too, but I love her acting throughout the show, there's such good writing! Augh!

But Clue? Hrm. Like, the board game? That's interesting. Murder mystery stories are fun to write!

@ Seracen Yeah, I have big notepad files of scenes for future potential use. Nothing that's strictly tied to any story, but usually is tied to specific characters. Sometimes I use them to help me finish chapters, or to craft little plot arcs, or I repurpose them to build up an unrelated character, with proper modifications of course. And sometimes, contests come around, and i can take all those snippets, and turn them into entries :) And worst comes to worst, they help me develop and understand the characters I'm working with.

my window actually is covered with insulating plastic. but I swear the cold comes right through the walls. *pout* a space heater sounds heavenly, but this has been a staggeringly bad holiday for me financially. wrecked my car the day after Christmas. had to buy a new one, which emptied my bank account, my Xbox One savings fund, and put me in debt to my mom, my sister, and my uncle. and depressed the heck out of me for the dumbest reason possible... Dragon Age: Inquisition will totes be an Xbox One game and there is like zero chance of me getting the system for a year or more now. *pouts, stomps foot*

anyways yes, writing in the cold sucks. I have written nothing in days (except some vague outlining for Clue). and it sort of depressed me because last time I wrote anything I wrote a whole chapter in one day. which is like... totes amazing for me. fingerless gloves do sound nice though! *ponders* but where would you get something like that? or did you just buy a normal pair and take the scissors to them?

*grins* this one actually struck me by surprise. I was playing the board game with my two youngest sisters a few nights ago and I started to have visions of like... a whole movie based on it. I know there was a comedy one done once. I saw it when I was like 12. but I had a less comedic and more... modern...?... take on the game in mind. and perhaps some gender changes... I mean... Professor? Colonel? last I checked, girls could hold both of those titles! *winks* not that they necessarily will in my story, but they totes could!

Eesh, I'm sorry to hear that. Debt sucks...I've only ever been in student debt before, but I know it doesn't feel good to owe money. At least you have a car, it's more important than nidjagames, even if DA:I is looking mighty fine on the horizon. I miss console gaming a little...I mostly game on PC, but I missed out on some games I would have liked to play, like The Last Of Us and whatnot. I told myself a few years ago that I'd stop buying games with my own money, and just ask for them as gifts, but that hasn't worked out well in my favour. :P

i hope you find some luck this year, and your entry into Inquisition isn't too delayed. :(

I grabbed some gloves on black friday clearance. Just wool gloves that are mostly fingerless, and have a big mitten flap if I need to use them to go outside. I did some trimming to make them work better for typing, but I can imagine that any set of gloves would do.

I can understand that. Her character's pretty intriguing and awesome. And her voice is really nice too. :P
I haven't seen any of the recent stuff (No TV here, too expensive for no one watching it). But yeah, I can see it getting a bit worse without the same characters hanging around. It's like watching an episode of Glee without my two favourite characters making an appearance, or them showing up for less than a minute of screen time :( It's not that I hate the new characters per se, I just don't like them as much, and I want more of the old ones that make me laugh and smile. I've felt similarly at times with things like SNL as well, among other shows. It's hard to see characters you love leave a show. David Tennant's Doctor, in Doctor Who? Huge loss, and I couldn't look at Matt Smith's one for months.

Hrm, interesting! You're right, there's a lot of potential there :) Nothing wrong with gender swapping the characters, as they entirely lack backstory, so there's nothing vital to them as characters being shifted.

Hehe, the characters in Cluedo (I presume that's what you're referring to anyway) are Agatha Christie standards of the highest order. If you were to do a 'serious' version of Cluedo, it'd basically be a Christie-esque book, just make sure the 'twist' is too complex for the audience to work out. I watch a fair bit of Poirot and Marple (David Suchet's Poirot is unparalleled for me and Geraldine McEwan is pretty good as Marple too) and you rarely see the plot twists/reveals coming.

On placeholders:
That would require planning, something I'm terrible at. When I sit down to write, I'm usually writing the next chapter, wondering how the hell I'm going to get myself out of the scenario resulting from the previous chapter. Fun though.

And a non-writing question for our friends from the US, please. Why do all telephone numbers in US TV start 555?

Not American, but I recall that 555 numbers, or at least a decent range of them, are set aside for use in TV shows, movies, etc. This way, no one can have them and take advantage of people calling these numbers. Which, oddly enough, apparently happens frequently enough for the government to reserve those numbers. Strange, I know.

But yeah, just makes things easier. And outside of the above, it's used for directory assistance and stuff, loke looking up services, people, etc.

At least, that's my understanding of it. But certainly not all phone numbers in the USA start with 555, or include 555.

Odd. Just pick up the phone book and there's a world of telephone numbers for nutters to ring. But I suppose with American liability laws, they're going to play safe.

Anyhoo, had a comment/review on AO3 for my trilogy sequel (a rare thing on AO3 it seems, for me at least). Was quite praising but also asked just about every question I still haven't actually decided an answer for in for the long term. I just have so many ideas about what could happen, from happy ending to further desperation. At the more extreme end of the market, can an ME fic with almost no ME characters sustain itself? One idea leaves only Shepard in the galaxy, for e.g.

That said, the person who reviewed said that they almost gave up on reading the sequel as I'd made it appear that some are dead at the end of the 1st book, including their favourite character. It has the desired effect at the time from the feedback I've had (it's supposed to be quite a smack in the face) but seems that if taken at face value, might put some off the sequel if they think their fave character isn't going to be in it. Food for thought anyway.

I'm reminded of the rock song "867-5309" by Tommy Tutone.  Apparently, people are still calling the number from that 80's song.

Yeah, actual comments on AO3 are rare.  Still, the exposure and "kudos" are nice.

As for mostly OP characters, you are going to get a lot of varying opinions on this one.  Personally, I tend to prefer reading stories with no more than 25% original characters.  If the characters are done well, that number may go up to 33%.

However, there are other people who care for nothing but OC's, with the main characters showing up for mere cameos.  There should be a market for either style.

As for me, I am writing my current story, knowing full well that my romantic pairings will exclude some of the fans.  I'm fine with that.  While I have my favorites, I am not opposed to any of the established pairings by BW (with the exception of the yeomen, on account of very little character development...ie: they are not worthy of displacing the other potentials).

Erego, I truly have no qualms about the subject matter, so long as it's compelling.

Ugh. Ever get one-shot requests from a reader, and the prompt is short and interesting, and seems like a fun enough reprieve? And then, you're 2/3 of the way through and you realize you've just written a 6k word OUTLINE for a prompt that the reader probably just expected ~2k written words from at most?

Academic writing is killing me. I force myself to be concise there, and then I have no energy for it when I write fun stuff. Ughhhhh still interested in the one-shot but holy hell I need someone around to poke me with a spoon or something when I start expanding too much on a concept.

BWAHAHAHA!!

That's pretty much what my next ME fic is about.  My surrogate sister requested a short story to bring back her "Thane-y-poo" to life.  She even offered to help co-author it, if needed.

Well, a year later, I am still wrapping up my current fic, and my outline for this next project is...large...

Nevermind the fact that my friend and I brain-stormed another fic that I will absolutely have to work on before/simultaneously.

I did once get a reader request to a sequel of one of my one-off fics.  It was an interesting blurb and idea, but I never took it anywhere...mainly because I just wanted to say goodbye to that story, once I was done.  Trying to create a sequel would be far too overworked, as I'd be leaving behind most of the original material.

Well there you go. The comment I'd got on AO3 spurred me on to get the next chapter out and suddenly a swathe of comments (well, three, but you know, that's a swathe for AO3 lol). I'm rapidly approaching a section I feel I'd done 'wrong' when I originally wrote it and wanted to re-write. The questions I'm getting pertain specifically to this 'climax' and now I'm worried I'll **** it up again lol.

[spoiler]
30 years have passed since the assault on Sol. The Normandy had been scattering the beacons to warn the future, not aware that so much of the fleet had survived, or that Shep survived, and eventually use the Therum Prothean facility as a new home. Liara and Ash become romantically involved and I'm at the point where Shep has discovered their location, now thinking she can wing her way back to her love (Liara). The sticking point in the original was that there was a bit of a time jump from when Shep leaves the fleet with Samara in tow to arriving at the Normandy crew. The thing is, apart from maybe a bit of Samara/Shep banter, not sure what else I could put in there to create a better build up. The tension around the Liara/Shep/Ash triangle is pretty obvious from the get go so... hmm. I've created a small scene on their craft where Samara and Shep discuss the asari, and Shep's obsession with the 'blue beauties' and her anticipation of meeting up with Liara. Shep has tempered her anticipation somewhat, due to the way previous re-unions with Liara have gone (I'd made a big thing of Liara's indifference during the ME2 Illium/LOTSB arc). Hmm, now I think about it, some kind of conversation between Liara and Ash about Shepard could be useful, though as the writer it'd feel a bit contrived to me.

What I mainly like though, from the AO3 comments is that there is a lot of sympathy for Ash and no-one wants anyone to get hurt through all this, though that's pretty inevitable and makes for good drama. Muhahahaha.

random qotd time! Actually three of them. To make up for how I missed quite a few days recently.
First, How do you feel about Transformers Revenge of the Fallen?
Personally, I really like it. That Forest Battle kicked ass! Though I was a bit disappointed by Devastator/the Fallen/Megatron. "Optimus is a wimp! He got his ass handed to him by Megatron." (I know at least two of my siblings were saying that.)
Second, do you guys like the Zanarkand track from FFX. I personally love it.
Third. Do you listen to music while you write, and if so what kind? I always listen to music when writing, and what I listen to is random. Anything from beethoven and other classical greats to modern stuff like Miracle of Sound and Breaking Benjamin, and Keane/Skillet.

what request? what request? tellmetellmetellme! *grins and jumps up and down* I didn't know you took requests! I have one or two... dozen... that I could think of! *smiles* kidding, of course. tell these silly people not to bother you with requests! I certainly never bother you with random questions or other sketchiness... *whistles innocently*

oh. and Stoob. I had to go look up Cluedo to figure out what the heck you were talking about. I had no idea that Clue was originally created in another country, or that it had a different name there! *is an ignorant, self-centered American, obviously*
