On games, I'm keeping an eye on Thief and Star Citizen. Star Citizen is a MMO space trading and combat simulator. After years of wanting a space sim akin to Free Space 2, and watching/playing mods like FS2 The Fall Of An Empire, FS2 Blue Planet - War In Heaven, Star Citizen looks like the answer to every flight jockey's prayers. I made a substantial pledge and a number of 'pilots' in my guild have already signed up so definitely, this is one MMO I'm looking forward to.
Star Citizen excites me, as a huge Freespace fan and someone who generally adores those sort of games, but I won't have the free time to really commit to it, so I refuse to let myself buy it until my schedule is freer.

ooooo! I forgot about Thief.
that's another one I'm totes heartbroken over my lack of ability to buy a
next-gen system for. *pout*
and... this is not really a post to
ask for advice but more of a gripe. but I'm discouraged. I have written 8
chapters for my mass effect story, and it's just not working. I like my
story idea. I like my characters. and I think I'm doing fairly well at
capturing Liara. but it took 4 chapters just to cover a bunch of needed
information. and after 8 chapters nothing has happened still. it's all
just conversation, and most of it isn't even plot-advancing
conversation, but expositional stuff. and I just don't like it.
I
know how to fix it. some of it can even be salvaged. but it means
basically rewriting 6 of the 8 chapters that I spent the last six months
writing. *sigh* it will totes be 1000% better the way I've reimagined
it, but still... it's depressing that I spent a large chunk of my free
time for the last several months writing stuff that just doesn't work.
I know the feel pretty well. it's funny, but my biggest fic for glee is unpublished...~80k words written, and a solid outline of 160k. But over time, i came to realize that the story, while good, just wasn't where it needed to be after that sort of content. The pacing was poor. There were odd time skips. Some of the dialogue was the sort that would have been necessary for characters if they were in a real life situation, but on aper, I'm supposed to be able to avoid long, winding discussions that barely say anything.
So it sits. It has some of my best written material in it, and I'm constantly pulling from its notes to pad out some of my other stories now, and it makes me sad, but it is what it is. I had to make the decision to call it dead on the table and let it be harvested for remains.
However, as this is what...your first fic? Have someone look it over, so if they feel the same. it could be new writer jitters getting at you...I know I had them during Flotsam, where i thought it was progressing at a snail's pace, full of filler, etc. Now, I look back on it and wonder why I didn't take the time to properly fill that story out. Perspective is an interesting thing.
I mean, look at Feathers. For chapter after chapter, there were parts where my Shep and Liara basically just apologized to each other repeatedly, without a heck of a lot of progression. And that's okay.
Anywho, it's early in my semester, so if you ever wanted me to give it a gander before my schedule filled out again, I could do that. Let me know.

different
subject! does anyone ever get story ideas that you really want to
write, but... they just don't fit as fanfiction for any of the fandoms
you know? I have this idea that I really want to write, but I just can't
think of a fandom where it would fit. and writing it as original
fiction could work, I guess, but then it would be... hard, I guess.
because there would be no background lore or anything and with this
particular idea, shoehorning in original background lore, religious
beliefs and all that would feel a bit forced (but also necessary, seeing
as how my idea deals with what happens after death in a medieval-type
universe).
*waves* sorry for my random grousing and musing. hope everyone else is having a pretty amazing weekend!
All the time. Seriously. I get ideas that fit none of the fandoms I either write in, or have considered writing in.
However, with a bit of tweaking, I can usually adapt them. Find out what makes those ideas compelling, and start trying to link those ideas to the universe you'd like to write in, see if they're compatible. it might not be a perfect fit, but you could end up with something pretty interesting!

Another QOTD time! And, surprisingly,
this one is TV related.(I don't watch a lot of tv, so it's surprising
to me.) Anyways, the question. Have you ever watched a tv series, and
just felt that it should have gotten more seasons? A show where it was
so good that even after it ended you just wanted more? May include shows
you finish, and then re-watch again instantly. Hell, let's forget about
limiting it to TV, what anything did you feel ended too soon, and you
just craved more?
I always resented Alias for ending so quickly in the middle of a plot arc. It was a hellishly convoluted story by any standard, but it was entertaining, and after so much effort put into understanding it, it ending so swiftly was unsatisfying.
Firefly was another, but at least we got Serenity.
But generally, I tend to be content with what I'm given. I'm not the kind of person who agonizes over closure, usually. With Mass Effect, it was just missing fresh experiences with my favourite characters more than a feeling that there should have been more, so it would be done right. I watch plenty of films without traditional closure (my friends hated Driver because of the ending. I thought the ending fit, and that the film was spectacular, for instance).
Once upon a time, I kind of got a little miserable after finishing Oryx & Crake, but then margaret Atwood did two more books, and I'm pleasantly sated.
