Regarding criticism. I'm just glad whenever I get a review of any kind. Albeit, Beyond the Light and the Dark may be at the point where I'm getting two reviews per new chapter I put out. So that's nice.

'Just got myself a pocket-size notebook committed to my writing project. Creativity eludes me when I'm in front of the computer screen, or otherwise trying to draw it out of my head on demand. I need to capture the ideas that come to me in passing thoughts. Also easier to organize my plans.
Typing with my eyes closed is another tactic I've employed... or just thinking about closing my eyes will put me in the right mind-set.

Question: How often do you write a chapter that's just for fun? Where your characters can just relax and be themselves?
I ask because I realized that I almost never do this. That's why I just spent five hours straight typing up a fun chapter for A Warden's Letters. I think I should try to do more chapters like that for my other stories... ![]()

At times, possibly too often.
I have many a chapter where very little actually happens, apart from chat or general fluffy silliness.

My story is about Miranda. If she's relaxed, then she's not herself. ![]()

It depends upon the character. I don't write "Ideal Heroes." Maybe not entire chapters, but there will be sections of chapters. No person is "all discipline, all the time" except for Sheploo. There are some people who don't know how to relax.

On the subject of criticism - I can't really complain as I have the horrible habit of not leaving reviews for other people. Karma is really unkind at time! ![]()
As for fun chapters, I can't really write 'fun' (I have an overdeveloped melodramatic tendency
). Whenever I do have a lighter moment in mind, it would probably work better as a standalone.

edit: Does anyone know which ward of the Citadel Doctor Michel's clinic was on?

It was just 'the wards', I believe, for ME1.

Yeah, pretty much. They weren't very specific about it.

I don't really write chapters out of the blue. All my writing generally serves the central plot in some way. I do, however, allow for some downtime for the characters. The readers need just as much a rest as anyone else, and beating one over the head with plot can get tiresome.
Even so, I generally couch certain scenes I am hankering to write within the confines of my story. There are plenty of scenes I really wanted to write for fun, and incorporated into the story (so long as it fit). In the rare case that it didn't work, I shelve it for later inspiration.

Yep, medical clinic in "the Wards," although Huerta Memorial was the official "bus stop" in the wards in ME3.

Thanks folks - I think I'll locate it in Tayseri ward, the one that was still damaged in ME2.
I'm probably mad here, but...am I wrong in capitalising the 's' in Spectre? I think it should be capitalised when going 'Spectre Shepard' - 'Spectre Williams' etc, but when using 'the spectre' it shouldn't be. But when I write it like that it feels 'off' - like I'm referring to a ghost - so I end up capitalising. ![]()

I seem to recall that being discussed with regards to military ranks as well...aaaaages back, probably before you even joined the thread. ![]()
Your initial instinct is right. Capitalise for when it is the title like that but not when saying 'the captain/spectre' or 'a captain/spectre'.
We also discussed the capitalisation conventions for races in the games. Known ones all lower case - human, krogan, asari, geth, etc. - but 'mythical/legendary' (or some better word that lilli came up with. I forget) ones are capitalised: Reapers, Collectors and Protheans.

Oh rats! I'm repeating the past, again! ![]()
But just to contend the point couldn't 'Spectre' fall under the 'mythical/legendary' exception? Otherwise...
Shepard gave a grunt of approval; then tilted his head backwards until it met his seat’s headrest. “After we leave the hospital, we’d best speak with Barla Von,” the Spectre proposed, “hopefully he’s found out something useful about our asari matriarch.”
...I'm in trouble! ![]()

Did you know that Asari capitalize the names of all races? I made up that. Since my story is written by an Asari author they're all capitalized, even Human. It may not be correct in the English language, but Asari don't care.
Spectre.... you could use it as the acronym SPECTRE for SPEcial Tactics and REconnaissance.

I actually term it "SPECTRE" in my story, as it is an acronym, but you aren't wrong in your approach either. It is a designation of rank, a title, and therefore can be capitalized as such.

I remember when we were talking about this very subject earlier. IIRC, the joke was that Aethyta would call me "conceited" for never capitalizing humanity, yet doing so for all other races. Actually, concerning your character, this would actually fall in line with the way you have described her!

The way I use it (though sometimes I've noticed I'm not consistent when distracted by shiny things...)
human, asari, turian, etc because they're a species/race.
Prothean, because it's an empire not a species/race.
Reapers, Collectors, Husks, etc. because they are normal words too, so I like to distinguish between the two. "The Reapers reap", rather than "The reapers reap", if you see what I mean.
Titles, as already said above, Captain Anderson vs the captain. I fall foul of that one sometimes, convincing myself 'captain' is a proper noun in this context.

I probably would capitalize Spectre because it is also an organization, as well as a rank and title. But that's just me. The various races of ME, I tend to not capitalize, though I used to do it all the time (if you have seen some of my posts from way back when I first popped up on BSN, you know what I mean).
Then again, the only story I have for ME doesn't focus on Shepard or the Spectres at all. My main character (Lance) works for Aria, so the story provides a different view on the ME-verse. Spectres, Shepard, the Citadel, the Council, Council space and laws/regulations... Lance doesn't really care about any of that. He just happens to get mixed up in it all while trying to hide from Cerberus as they hunt him down. All he really cares about is staying alive and his payment from Aria.

Personally I'd add Spectre to the list. As we're not really using the word in its normal usage. e.g. "The Spectre's spectre"

Hah, join the club!
Hehe, me too.
Procrastination seems to be the story of the day. It's annoying, because I'd love to start posting my story, or start my others in haste. Instead, I am simply enjoying the relative free-time, yet wasting it away playing "internet roulette," where I trawl around looking at random stuff.

lol, I had a case of procrastination for the last few days before I finally got around to typing the next chapter to TLFW. But today, I finished the chapter I was working in for TLFW, then started working on the next chapter for On the Run.
Weird how everyone decides to procrastinate the day I decide to start typing another chapter each for two of my stories. Go figure. ![]()

And the edits continue.... due to the Rule of Cool, I added a scene in the first chapter just because I thought it would be cool, and of course because it would fit. This is the "Garnishing The Story" trope just because it makes the section better. Incendiary Component; Big Explosion #1 -- because big explosions make life good complete with the Pre-explosion buildup. Badass is badass. Things are going to **** at this time.
