The discussions on the Steam community forums are still rolling on, as most of BSA made no sense and quite frankly frelled up (guess what I've been watching a lot of recently?) the good work they did with Infinite.

Well, glad to see I'm not the only one.

Also, I will see your "frell" and raise you another "gorramn" amazing sci-fi series!  Ah man, good tv set in outer-space is so hard to come by.  I think my list of faves goes...

1) Farscape/Peacekeeper Wars

2) Outlaw Star

3) Firefly/Serenity

Star Trek and Stargate were fun, but I can't stand marathoning them, like I can the ones on my list; and Battlestar Galactica is too frakking depressing for multiple viewings.  As for Cowboy Bebop...I have to be in the mood for it.  Incidentally, this is why I was such a fan of the ME series, going so far as writing fanfic.

Funny you should mention Battlestar Galactica.  I'd watched seasons 1 - 3 in a few marathons with my housemate over a few days, then he was like, "I can't be arsed today, I'm Battlestar Galactica'd out."  I was like but... they've just shown who the 'four' are, we can't stop now!  So it's taken us probably 3 years to get around to watching season four, with us thinking that's the final season.  Yea, we were wrong, got to the end of season four and were like, ummmmmmm, WTF?  Then noticed the 'final season trailer' on the DVD and were like... D'OH!  However, we watched 'The Plan', which we now know in hindsight we should not have until seeing the end, but I totally called the fifth due to right at the beginning of the series and the doctor's initial cylon identifying machine, she came up as positive but it was all messed up at the beginning and dismissed IIRC and the doc only gave negatives after that point anyway, "No mess, no fuss.".  Anyhoo...

I think you give the writers too much credit, Stoob. I think they pretty much said, "We need to pick who they are now to make a good cliffhanger. Who makes the most sense? Eeny meeny miny moe..." :P

For all the talk of 'The Plan' there really was no plan. Another show where the mystery was stretched out, nonsensical and unsatisfying. For all the show did right, I think it did about two other things wrong. Sigh.

...anyway, Firefly ruuuuuuuules.

Evidently, I'm back online now and the change of ISP went without a hitch, hurrah! (I think 'Gimme Chocolate' might be my fave now...)

@Seracen: you hit the nail on the head with what I thought the game was trying to imply with that choice, and as I said, I'm pretty sure that you get a few Rene points for Cerberus and Para for Alliance Recruitment, for what they were worth in ME3...

Actually, lemme just double check the war assets, it might indicate in there...?

Edit: nothing specific in the assets listing about that.

gratz on the switch! and Catch Me If You Can is still my fav. with the war assets thing tho, you have to hunt a bit. it adds in an addendum to certain assets depending on choice. like if after Tuchanka you say that the krogan need the turians, it boosts like... turian fifth fleet or something, where if you frame it as the krogan being the heroes, then the krogan clans get the boost.

and now I must confess: I am apparently like the worst nerd ever. *sheepish* I'm starting to think I'm not worthy of the term. anime and some gaming knowledge, check. but I recently (well, a little while ago) had a friend lend me all three of the X-Men movies, X-Men First Class, and both Wolverine movies and force me to watch them (force is a bit strong, I actually did enjoy them) so he could drag me to the premiere of the new X-Men movie. prior to that, I knew absolutely nothing about the X-Men. likewise for other super heroes. my knowledge is limited to what I've seen in movies like Thor: The Dark World, Iron Man (1 and 2) and the Avengers, and the Dark Knight for batman. this past week my friend lent me the heroes boxed sets, prior to which I had never seen that show either. I have never seen firefly, battlestar galactica, farscape, stargate (well, I saw the movie, but not the series), etc... I've seen scattered episodes of Star Trek (and most of the movies) and all of the Star Wars movies, but none of the animations or games other than The Old Republic... the list of stuff I missed goes on.

in short... I seem to be missing firsthand experience with a lot of the stuff that it seems like every other nerd in the universe has in-depth knowledge about. I don't have the prerequisites covered! I'm more like a nerd-wannabe! *pout*

I highly recommend seeing Firefly, Farscape, Stargate SG-1 and Stargate: Atlantis.  Star Trek: Enterprise is good, well all the series spin offs are good. To me anyways.

Love the Old Republic RPG games.

Saw most the of X-men movies mentioned above, not the newest one though.   Avengers, check.  Dark Knight: Nope. Probably won't ever.  Friend said it was depressing to him.  I've seen Thor and Iron man.  I've watch Battlestar but I felt there too much violence and drinking going on... messed up.

I recently bought myself a new computer for my birthday, motherboard, memory, video card, cpu/fan etc.  Not a bad investment. Works great! Better than my four year old piece of crap. :)  I'm ready for Dragon Age: Inquistion! :)  I paid roughly $1000 and received two free games with it.  Saints Row IV and Thief.  I have been playing Saints Row IV.  That game has some pretty messed up **** going on. Not really what I expected but fun regardless.  That alien bastard!     However, the actor who voiced Oriana Lawson is one of the main female voices.  It's really funny hearing her swear/****** a lot... causing all sorts of mayham.  :P

Interesting you should say that.  Originally, if the show never got renewed, the ending to season 4 WOULD have been the actual ending.  However, in that event, it would have been slightly re-shot, with a voice over from Adama (ie not depressing, but hopeful).  It would have completely changed the ending to the series.  As pretentious as the final seasons ended up, and as off-the-rails as the story became, I feel it would have been for the better (even though the final seasons DID have some amazing moments).

[snip]

in short... I seem to be missing firsthand experience with a lot of the stuff that it seems like every other nerd in the universe has in-depth knowledge about. I don't have the prerequisites covered! I'm more like a nerd-wannabe! *pout*

I wouldn't worry about it.  We all have those few things we geek out over, & things we leave alone.  For myself: I completely skipped Dr. Who, barring a few specials.  However, I am used to watching enough such shows they don't confuse me.  I also avoid most slice-of-life anime, as I prefer over-arching stories.

So I just picked up Skyrim in the steam sales. Do you guys have any mods you'd recommend?

Dear Lord...WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?!?!  Hahaha...

Make sure you AV scan all downloads, as Nexus recently had an infiltration (promptly corrected, but still).  There are also a myriad of user created "Unofficial patches."  In order to make some of the advanced stuff work, you'll have to use BOSS, Wyrebash and install the "Script Extender."  I found using the Mod Manager made things much simpler.

Firstly, let me suggest the companion mods: Cerwiden and Vilja.  Assuming you like such things, they add a lot of life to the game, speaking on many of your quests, and talking with the main character and NPC's as well.  They even have their own advanced questlines, if you care to delve.  I also made sure to download the multiple followers mod, as I didn't want to miss out by having to choose one companion.  Obviously, this may break game balance, as quest difficulty is generally rated for you and one follower, maybe two.

I would follow up with the extended quest mods for the Dark Brotherhood and the Thieves Guild.  "Helgen Reborn" and "Moonpath to Elwesyr" add more quests, the topfiles are usually indicative of quality here.  Don't miss out on "Falskaar," which is like a large DLC expansion unto itself!

There were a few random UI and gameplay balance tweaks I partook of, including infinite weight "cheats."  I also got a few of player houses, though my major bases of operation ended up being from the Hearthstone DLC.  I will leave these to your discretion.  However, I would suggest you figure those out fairly early, as you don't want to lose things if the mods re-arrange the geography of your Skyrim.  As for beautification mods, I mainly downloaded prerequisites that affected my companions.  Bear in mind that your choice here will effect what armor mods you can utilize.

As for environmental visuals...a lot of the ENB and Lighting mods make the world look REALLY dark when you are in the shade or caves, and I didn't like the blurring effect some of the advanced post-processors utilized.  I ended up using a simple FXAA-injector.  However, there are a few lovely mods that improve all the textures within the game, and these I am more a fan of (alas, this will NOT help you get the pretty weather effects...for that you need the afore-mentioned ENB mods).

Bah...I had several hundred mods by the time I was done...I shall have to hunt down my list and PM you with it sometime...

Grats.  Mods?  ALL OF THEM!  hehe

The Unofficial Skyrim Patches are pretty much essential.  They fix soooooo many broken quests that Bethesda didn't.  Check the sticky on the Skyrim Steam Community Forums.

Can depend on your system and wants.  For graphical improvement, if your system can handle it (2GB vid mem at least, ideally), I'd recommend seeking out every HD texture pack available ('Static Mesh Improvement Mod' and anything from the brands 'aMidianBorn' or 'Vivid Landscapes' are a good starting point for improving a hell of a lot of the world).  There's obviously the nudifying mods, my personal fave currently being the 'SevenBase Bombshell' female body.  For gameplay, the world is your oyster; realistic needs, wet and cold, survival stuff to complete overhauls of game dynamics.

First though, I'd recommend playing the game unmodded, with just the patches, to get a feel of the game and an idea of what it is that YOU want to improve/change in the game.

Me?  I've played 3366 hours (though lots of that time is spent arsing about fixing mods and screen archery) and I'm constantly on the limit of the max number of mods that you can run (255).  :D

And 'physics' mods... just look at that flowing ponytail...

You really should watch The Dark Knight. It is superb. I guess it's sort of depressing because it's also an analogue on 'the war on terror', and we all know how that's turning out... It's a very smart crime film that just happens to have a guy in a batsuit and a guy dressed like a grungey clown.

If you thought Laura Bailey (yes, I know her name. She's great) swore a lot in SRIV (and sang along to Sublime, sublimely), you ought to hear her character Kainé in Nier. :P

Laura Bailey, voice of Skyrim's Serana, if I'm not mistaken.

And on the Dark Knight, it's dark, yes, but depressing?  Hmm, depends what depresses you I suppose. hehe

okay. I've just seen yet more proof that boys are pervs. it seems to me that the main point of that "physics mod" used in the skyrim video above is to provide especially large and bouncy boobs... and I seem to recall a friend of mine having a mod that left all of the female characters in his game naked... like... completely naked. without even underwear and stuff...

Obviously, the main point was the pony tail physics... hehe.  But yea, having ALL female chars naked all the time gets old fast.  That said, few and far between are hetero chaps who don't raise at least a smirk at even virtual boobs.  What can I say, it's in our genes to appreciate the female form.

I suppose that's the main theme with the modern Batman era, who are the good guys, when they are little better than the 'bad guys'?

Hah, in my experience, the ladies liked themselves a bit of beefcake as well...or you know, chiseled abs on the ladies if they prefer that (I know I certainly did).  These are Vikings, and their women are supposed to be just as strong!  In other words, no more stick figures wielding giant two-handers!

I suppose that's the main theme with the modern Batman era, who are the good guys, when they are little better than the 'bad guys'?

Which is why I am particular about "gritty reboots."  Anti-heroes are all well and good, but we still need something compelling and sincere to root for.  Even the Punisher had friends, had boundaries, had a code.  This is why I found the God of War series such a failure.  It wasn't even a proper "fall from grace" of a person who "became what he beheld."  Kratos went through what can laughably be beaten into some semblance of "an arc" in the first game, then spent the rest of his time being vile, subhuman filth.  I'd have had more respect in simply playing him as a straight out villain, but the devs wouldn't fully commit...so we get someone who thinks he's righteous, yet sickeningly myopic and amoral (yes, I mean "amoral," though he is "immoral" as well).

Just finished playing Watch Dogs, and it reinforces why I rarely get into GTA-style games...lack of story.  Oh for sure, WD HAD some bit of story...but I would hardly deem it compelling.  The IDEA of the world and the story was far more interesting than the product we got.  I wouldn't call the end result mediocre, but it was only slightly above average.  Gameplay was fun enough, but there has to be a reason for me to care about the characters in a game.  Otherwise, I cannot justify devoting any amount of time to such a thing.

A barebones story that works for a 1.5 hour movie acquits itself VERY POORLY over the course of any game that lasts several hours or more.  Hell, I actually enjoyed the crap out of Saints Row 3-4 simply because they had FUN stories that were well paced.  However, I can't say as I've enjoyed many other GTA style open world games.  As far as open world games, I suppose the Elder Scrolls (Skyrim, etc) are something of an anomaly...there's more lore than there is spoon-fed story...but it's more than enough to be compelling!

I do have some issue when the sexism card is played at video games.  What about the men?  Tropes is tropes, and men are generally portrayed as cold and short sighted, whose only recourse to what is happening in their life is to lash out and murder.  The lead in to that video regarding the early advertising of arcade games was the norm at the time, such as advertising cars, so it's unfair to single out the video game industry for this when presented so out of the context of the time.  But such videos are not there to present a fair and balanced argument, but to make a particular (and sometimes biased) point.  In recent/current games where the lead character is female (ME or Tomb Raider, for eg) they are a much more complex and interesting character, something that few male leads can enjoy.  The male NPCs in a game such as Skyrim generally have two types: "I am a warrior!  Raaah!" or simpering sniveller; hardly a broad spectrum.  Whereas the female NPCs are generally more varied, balanced and interesting.  And don't get me started on recent advertising trends to portray men as pathetic 'man-children'.

Rant over.   ^_^

tl;dr: Bad writing and characterization abound in all forms of story-telling...and objectification can occur in all forms of art.

Not saying I don't enjoy the nice window dressing on the pretty men and women in games/movies/etc.  Hell, I get livid if anime/book relationships never get proper resolution.  Titillation is all well and good, but meaningless without substance.  For example, I rather doubt all the slash fiction for Supernatural would matter as much to fans who hadn't already fallen in love with Sam and Dean Winchester.  Of course, I don't partake of that particular aspect of the fandom.  However, let's consider what I did in my story, when I chose Shep to have a relationship with Liara and Jack...

Again, I felt extremely apprehensive, as the obvious thought is going to be "cheap fantasy fullfillment."  However, it was more than that for me, and why I strained so hard to make the relationship poignant and believable as possible.  Not gonna lie though, writing the tawdry bits was satisfying...if only b/c I get pissed at seeing characters act overly repressed.

Concordant to that, the romance element in the BW games meant so much because I fell in love with the characters.  There was an emotional connection that made that bit of "cheesecake" all the sweeter!  Hell, I have a folder full of fanart dealing in ME romances, whereas I don't bother with such art from a lot of other IP's.  In contrast, I couldn't have cared LESS about the rampant sex prevalent in the God of War series (between characters I didn't know or care about, or even characters I out-right despised).  This is just me, however..."different strokes for different folks" and all that...

totes with you all on this! *nod* I certainly wasn't trying to say that video games do any better at avoiding unpleasant stereotypes with male characters. it was just that the first thing I noticed about that video was the hair, because it's what Stooby said to check out. then, almost immediately after, I noticed the boobs, and... *shakes head* of course, I understand that lots of gamers are pervs. more than half of my friends are guys and all of them are gamers, so the pervy-gamer stereotype is very familiar to me. (but of course I know not all gamers are like my pervy friends! *grins*)

yes, stereotypes are everywhere. I don't have a lot of knowledge about games with male leads, because I tend to only buy games where I can play a female protagonist, but I've seen a few, and yes, the rrahh, smash! stereotype does seem pretty rampant. and of course, all male characters I can think of are fit, athletic, etc unless they're bad guys... if they ever include an overweight male in a story anywhere, he usually tends to be a repulsive perv for some reason. also true, female characters as far as story characters and whatnot are often more interesting and unique. but I blame that on the fact that the majority of gamers are guys, and they're probably more interested in the female characters they meet over the course of the game than anything else. I tend to gravitate more to the female cast myself, being an admirer of ladies and all. *smiles* so I totes get that.

oh... a more on topic question before I go...

what do you think amusement parks are like in the ME universe? I was sort of playing around with the idea of a scene or two in an amusement park, but when I got to thinking about the sorts of rides they would have with the availability of mass effect technology and all, I admit I drew a bit of a blank. I'm not the most technically minded person. *pout* does anyone have any thoughts I could borrow on the subject?

Well I'd reckon thrill ride is thrill ride (not everyone is in the space navy, flying through the relays as a matter of course), and the mass effect fields, well, what kind of 'roller coaster' ride you reckon could be construct with them?!  I suppose the Armax Arena might be a good reference for what the Milky Wayans might use technology for, a bit like ye olde holodeck maybe.  If Earth-centric amusement parks, no doubt dodgems will still be around, candy floss (cotton candy), toffee apples, and all those healthy(!) treats, along with the regular side attractions.  Geek show anyone?  Bukaaaw!

Edit: now you've got me thinking lol.  If I were to do such an episode, I'd well make it Earth-centric, just for the comedy value of the non-humans' reactions to our 'attractions'.  You saw how much Zaeed wanted to beat that game in Citadel, imagine if it was a coconut shy and he was competing with Grunt or Garrus, hehe.

Oh, and to be fair, I was being facetious about the hair when I mentioned it on the vid, it was totally about the boobs lol.  However, the physics is getting pretty good these days even on modest systems, not quite as 'living jello' as something like Dead or Alive.

true, the physics in games are a lot better than they were when I was little. but still, unless the girls in these games have helium-filled implants, real breasts just aren't that... buoyant. *grins* I'm way on the opposite end of the scale from being that absurdly topheavy, but still, this is something I know a little about! *shakes head*

Back on the Farscape line, I had a mooch around IMDB and although I was aware that they recycled their acting troupe a lot if they need anything voiced, I was quite surprised to see that Crais (Lani John Tupu) also does the voice for Pilot.  Never would have called that.  I've also had a good laugh at the number of the actors who have appeared in all those bad Aussie daytime soap operas we used to get in the 70s and 80s, like A Country Practice, Flying Doctors, The Sullivans, and so on.   :)

Rant over.   ^_^

The main topic/title of the video is to examine the issues on how video games presented women. So of course she would focus on that subject? O.o

It goes without saying devs cater to certain perceptions, expectations of the customer base they're aiming for.  It's only in recent years that some devs decided to go on a more constructive course in developing game chars. The rebooted TR is one. Wolf Among Us is another. The Longest Journey is one of the earliest games to have a female protagonist with any depth of personality.

The main bulk of devs however, still runs the usual course.

I would personally say that social issues cannot be 'studied' in a bubble.  All things are affected by what is going on around them, and just because you are discussing a particular subject, that should not mean that anything tertiary or relevant should be ignored/overlooked.  But anyway, between sci-fi franchises, dancing, boobs (dancing boobs?) and social issues we've got a bit off track... so... WRITING!

Still a little dry on the writing front here, put out a oneshot I wrote a while back about the rachni but my trilogy sequel is really stalled at the mo.  If I can get past the next couple of chapters, I've got a load of stuff to go after that (mostly already written) but it just ain't playing nice with me.  *sigh*
