Now, I know we don't do this kind of thing here, but I thought this one relevant to our thread and recent 'lore' conversation (and it's humorous!):

"Think of religion like a movie. The Torah is the first one, and the New Testament is the sequel. Then the Qu'ran comes out and it retcons like the last one never happened. There's still Jesus, but he's not the main character anymore, and the Messiah hasn't shown up yet.

Jews like the first movie, but ignore the sequels, Christians think you need to watch the first two, but the third movie doesn't count, Muslims think the third one was the best, and Mormons liked the second one so much that they started writing fan fiction that doesn't fit in with ANY of the series canon."

Top post, eh?  To newer contributors of the thread, this is not an official thing.  I just like to post some silliness or fluff I'm not going to use here sometimes if top post.  :)

...

“I will kill her!” Javik shouts.

“Javik!” Liara scolds. “We're alive, aren't we? The galaxy is free!”

“You call this alive? We are no better now than the machines that came to kill us. This is how she ends the Reaper war, by becoming one of them?”

“Can you not feel it though?”

“Feel what?”

“The galaxy, buzzing around in your head. As one. Connected. Complete.”

“I hear only chaos. I did not ask for this. Commander Shepard has betrayed all the peoples of this galaxy!”

You know, personally I had no issue with the way Tali LOOKED in that picture.  I was more upset that they approached it in the manner that they did.  In all fairness, I don't think it would have been such a big issue had they:

1) hired a model & photoshopped THAT picture

or

2) done #1 and CG'ed the end result

As such, there are some truly amazing pieces of fanart, some which even incorporate the "canon" concepts.  One of the popular CG models uses Fang from FF13 and gives her pale skin and eyes.  I think most people assumed that quarians looked like dark elves from WOW anyways (I personally liked some of the rejected concept models for the asari).  Again, the fault was more in the PRESENTATION of it.

On that note, it is interesting that humans and quarians are the only species with hair (keratin based fibers), as opposed to crests (krogans & drell), head fringes (asari & turian), or nothing (salarian & yahg "horns/pokey things").  It's partly why I left the idea of batarian "hair" intentionally vague in my story.  In my story, it's made of tubulin fibers that MIGHT be part of an artificial headdress (think the dreadlocks on a Predator...hair or headdress?).  I also gave them two sets of mammaries...simply b/c I liked a fan-created concept art.  Does it make sense?  I dunno, but it was a fun and amusing to write about the distinction.

Also, while I understand the biological reasons for krogan/turian women looking similar to men, I still prefer the idea of well-defined differences (whether it be mammaries/pectoral muscles, defined hips, longer hair/fringes, etc).  It's an aesthetic preference, I suppose.  Ostensibly, it was done as a cost-saving measure (uses the same model)...but I like that Nyreen and Eve were given baggy clothing, so as to mask the differences.  That way, they can be anything the audience wants.

Furthermore, this is all assuming a HUMAN idea of biology/physiology/evolution.  Just b/c turians are an avian species doesn't mean they would have to conform to "Terran" bird morphology.  Moreover, the evolution of such a species might mandate changes that human logic couldn't account for.  Birthing hips, for instance, might be just as important for laying eggs as for delivering a baby.

Any argument that morphology HAS to conform to any idea...especially in a universe as large as ME, is a bit...myopic.  Heck, the duck-billed-platypus is the perfect example of morphology not caring about evolutionary precepts.

Bah...I ramble again.  Anything to procrastinate writing my next stories, I suppose...

Sounds like something Mel Brooks or Lewis Black would say, or George Carlin, haha.

[snip] “I hear only chaos. I did not ask for this. Commander Shepard has betrayed all the peoples of this galaxy!”

This should totally be said in a gravelly voice per Deus Ex: HR.

Incidentally, I would prefer the next ME taking place far enough in the future that we can't tell what ending was chosen.  There could be a throwaway line that "the Reapers wasted away," blurring the idea of whether they were "destroyed/controlled."  There could also be the advent of a neural net (like in Ghost in the Shell) that connects all beings if implemented, blurring the concept of "synthesis/not."

I know that we complained about our actions NOT making a difference, but I honestly thinking resetting the script would be preferable to interquels and prequels.  I rarely like them (as we know the ending, and canon becomes a hindrance to the story-writers in such a setting).  Besides, it's about right for how Bioware approached other games.  KOTOR 2 blurred the legacies left behind from KOTOR 1, and ME2/3 railroaded the ramifications for choices made previously (ie: the rachni are still around regardless, as is the Genophage cure; and destroying the Collectors (ME2) / Council (ME1) matters little except for Galactic Readiness).

Anyhoo, the concepts of choice, and all these multi-verse theories, further add to the "legitimacy" of fan-created content.  As such, I suppose I could be amenable to a truly amazing interquel/sequel...I just can't help feeling like it would be a step backward.  That's likely why I have gotten into the fanfiction realm of the ME universe so much.  There are so many choices, SOMETHING is bound to cater to my taste.

I like the religion/movie analogy.  Seems appropriate and something most people could relate to (unless they get offended that their religion is being compared to a movie, which is pretty likely in my experience).

I've seen quite a few fanfics that stick to the canon lore very well.  The ones that don't tend to be... weird, I guess you could say?  I prefer sticking to the canon lore so that I have something to base my fanfics on.  I did do an AU DA one-shot where Justice was joined with one of my Wardens instead of Anders, but that's just a one-shot.

Then, there are the people who do fanfics based on their headcanon...  Well, let's just say that those fanfics tend to vary from the lore, in my experience.

For me it was both the way they made Tali look and the insultingly lazy way it was done. I mean, after building up the "mystery" for the first two games and most of the third, then they just make the reveal a photo of a human after a thirty-second photoshop job? Not only that, but I remember one of the developers commenting that they already had the look of the quarians worked out...then ME3 comes along and it's clear that they didn't, and decided a hasty, lazily-manipulated stock photo would be good enough. But that's not the only thing they lied about, regarding ME3....

Probably would've been better if there'd been no reveal at all.

As for hair, I had this mildly amusing idea that humans are the only species that has any. Lots of SF stories do the humans-are-special thing, but I kind of snicker at the idea of the thing that sets us apart is something as superficial as hair.

On differences between krogan and turian males and females...yeah, that's a good point. Slight differences in figure, maybe larger hips or slimmer waists (or the exact opposite), or something like that. I just figured the differences being more apparent in the way they move would make them a little more alien. My problem with the official look of the female turians, though, is that they look like a sort of distant-cousin species, the differences are so pronounced. But I'm sort of head-cannoning it as females like Nyreen might be of a different "ethnicity" (for lack of a better word) and there could be males who have a similar overall look, depending on what continent on Palaven they're from. Maybe they're descended from ancestors who evolved in the polar regions where there's less radiation from Palaven's sun, so they didn't have the long fringe/spike thingies for extra protection.

About batarian mammaries...heh, you did that, too, eh?  :D I don't remember where I saw this, but in another thread there was a brief discussion about batarian females having more than one pair due to giving birth to high numbers of children. So I had an idea that some would have four and others might have six, possibly as another ethnic distinction, or possibly just depending on which genetic trait is dominant in the individual. Of course, the first thing I did when this came up in Freelancers was to have Captain Bailey nickname her Sixpack.  I also have this idea that she might have hair surgically implanted at some point for reasons similar to humans getting piercings or tattoos. I'm thinking she was pretty much smothered by the batarians' repressive culture, and the first time she went off-world it was like she'd taken her first breath...and since she's young, she's looking for a way to stand apart from everyone she grew up knowing.

If what I've heard is correct, ME4 will be a prequel. Which I'm not at all interested in, knowing the state the whole galaxy will be left in, eventually.  :crying: I can't really work up any interest in seeing the Mass Effect setting in the distant future, either. The only thing that could really get me interested enough to buy another game is if another developer buys the rights and either does a full-on reboot of ME3 or just removes everything about the Reapers but leaves everything else as it was in 1 and 2 and tells a whole new story.

But yeah, that's very true about choices and fan-created content. Something good that came out of the ME3 mess was all the writers who needed to "fix" the story in their own way. I'm still keeping up with Marauder Shields, and will figure out my own "real" end to the story.

And speaking of ME3, a couple days ago I started watching Archengeia's Twitch playthrough and...wow. It's been a couple years since I tried to play that game, and seeing it now...it's even worse than I remember it being. (The videos are worth watching, though...it's not just a thorough analysis, it's downright exhaustive. And in the third one, there's an absolutely hilarious moment when he has an epiphany about how Kai Leng really fits into the whole mess.) That entire introductory segment shouldn't have even happened. That's going to be hard for me to grit my teeth and slog through when I start playing through it myself, but I'm hoping the MEHEM and Citadel Epilogue mods will make it worthwhile.

Gotta keep my eye on the priiiiiiize....

That was wrong, and I apologize.  :P

While not trying to labour the point, the most disappointing thing about Tali was not actually seeing Tali, only a small pixelly photo.  Regardless of whether a photoshopped stock image or an original piece of artwork/rendering, there was no face-to-face with un-hooded Tali for teh Talimancers.

I was totes with the people on being disappointed with the whole laziness of the photoshopped image thing for Tali's reveal, but I didn't mind the quarians looking fairly human-like. it was how I always imagined them anyway... except for whatever reason I always pictured them as purple. Must be the suit color... but why would all the suits be predominantly purple if it wasn't an homage to their natural skin color? *smiles* In my head, I will always see them as purple...

oh. and the turian female thing. I actually thought that was pretty perfect. I like the turian female look. and as I understand it, they're supposed to be rooted in an avian basis, right? with birds, it's usually the males with more elaborate coloring/plumage, so the females having a more toned-down and plain appearance works. *shrug* they looked feminine enough, but also seemed to fit as turian. it was one of the things I was actually pretty happy about overall.

as a p.s., I don't know how the rest of you manage to stay focused and productive as writers! *shakes head* I have lots of ideas. too many, actually, as I have like... an outline plus from two to six chapters completed for like 10 different stories, but nothing even close to ready for publication. however, I've been down for the last three weeks with a broken ankle, and yet in all that time I have done absolutely no writing. none. *sigh* now I'm less than a month from classes starting for the new semester and I didn't get as much done on my stories this summer as I wanted.

on the flip, I'm inspired to write today, so I'm going to have at it while I'm feeling it. and my summer, despite the injury, has been pretty darn fantastic. I hope everyone else is having a good summer too!

I like how this fanfic movie handled the problem...Tali unmasked at 57:30

Obviously some limitations, but an ambitious project, & I like it!

I always pictured the facepaint as tribal markings and makeup.  As such, I always figured Nyreen's face was simply more painted than the average turians.  If you compare her face to Nihilus, they both have a lot more paint than we generally see on turians.  Hell, Saren didn't bother with ANY, which I always assumed was another aspect of his Indoctrination.  Some of the Eclipse mercs have facepaint that makes them almost look like another species (until you realize it's paint and not skull that you are seeing).

Hah..."Sixpak!"   We totally had a discussion on mammaries, hair and such on this thread.  Hair as a form of piercing is an interesting idea, and one I'd not considered.  Still, I DO like the idea of tubulin structures, just to define them as something different from the keratin based fibers that humans have.  But as I said, I left it intentionally vague in my story.

Never considered the containment suits as an analog for skin tone, interesting idea!

As for keeping to the writing schedule, I generally set deadlines for myself, even if I don't particular intend to adhere to them.  I figure I'll at least accomplish half of what I set out for myself, which is some form of progress, haha!  I found it a lot easier to keep to the deadlines after I had beta readers and reviewers.  Once there were people waiting on my work, I felt a sense of urgency (in a good way).

Moreover, I posted bits of my story from time to time, simply to encourage moving on to the next part of the story.  Otherwise, I was likely to continue editing ad nauseum.  Having a beta/editor, as well as reviews on previous portions of the story, forced me to make peace with what I'd written and move on.  Even today, I can take a look at my completed works and feel like tweaking.  But at some point, I told myself "enough," and learned to be happy with the overall product.  The betas and the fellow fans who read my work were just as responsible for the finished product...simply for instilling that sense in me!

tbh, I liked Tali's pic until I saw that it was simply a photoshopped image.  Honestly, I was expecting to see her face on Rannoch since I was romancing her, but no, Shep gets to see her face while the rest of us are left wondering.  I suppose a pic is better than nothing, but BW could've at least taken a pic of a model and photoshopped that instead of getting one off the internet.  I guess I could blame EA for that, due to ME3 being rushed out like it was, but I feel like BW is partially to blame too.  I liked that she looked similar to a human, but not exactly.  And, tbh, the pic fit what I imagined she looked like.  I would've been happier if we got a better Tali pic in Citadel, but her romance scenes are pretty damn great as is, so I guess I could forgive BW for that.   :P

As for the turian females, I think their body-style fit fairly well.  Obviously feminine, but also obviously bird-like.  Not to mention that their body-style implies flexibility.   ;)

Hah, there is totally a NSFW video with an extended romance scene between Tali and Shep.  The artist did an amazing job of making his work seem a continuation of the scene BW created.  Unless you'd played the game, you'd barely realize that it wasn't legit!  It used the Fang model (FF13) I described before.  In all fairness, it pretty well looks like "canon" Tali as well.

NB: I am loathe to post the link to the video here, as I don't want to incur the wrath of the moderators.  The scene itself is as much poignant as it is explicit.  At any rate, PM me if you want the link.

If a more PG-13 version of the fanfilm scene had been implemented, I daresay people would have been happy, regardless of how human the quarians looked.  Again, I hold that it was more the presentation, rather than the actual results, that irked.

Hell, that fanfilm has inspired me to continue writing my story (which have Shep/Tali undertones)!  I daresay that is another source of inspiration.  Coming across good fan content encourages me to write my own fanfics, and keeps me hungry for more content (whether it is official or not)!

Okay... not ME related, but fanfic related... does anyone here follow the X-Men comics closely? I'm hoping someone does and could answer some questions for me. because my sudden inspiration to write today was, sadly, not inspiration to work on a story I'm already writing, but on a new one, and about a fandom I knew literally next to nothing about this morning. *sigh* I've seen all the movies because of a friend wanting to drag me to the premiere of the newest one, but other than that? no knowledge about the X-Men whatsoever.

so basically this morning I was looking at cosplay pictures and came across this gorgeous fairy girl with pink hair. and then several more by different cosplayers. they were all called pixie and they all looked the same, so it was obviously a character and not just a generic fairy-type character. so a few searches and I had a character bio, and then teammate bios, and then pics of some seemingly popular female LI's for her, and boom... new story in my head. but the problem is, aside from some basic personality notes about the characters from the bios, I know nothing about them, so portraying them right will be hard. and if I can be fairly sure of one thing, it's that if I butcher popular characters from a popular franchise, i'll hear about it in reviews! I searched for fanfics about the two, but there were only a handful and most were under 1000 words. in fact, there were only 13 for Pixie in the entire fandom! so I couldn't get a sense of her that way. if anyone knows either Pixie or X-23, I'd love a PM or something so I could ask some questions to help me smooth out the areas I'm struggling on. *smiles and waves*

Pixie and X-23 haven't had that much development, IMO, as they are relatively new characters (almost caricatures at this point really).  Pixie sort of reminds me of a bubbly version of Jubillee, without the 90's "mallrat" feel.

http://www.comicvine...xie/4005-40673/

X-23 tends to come across as emo, but you can't really blame her, or anyone in any of the "Weapon" programs.  The only upbeat person I can recall was Deadpool...and he's not so much "upbeat" as insane, lol.

http://www.comicvine...x-23/4005-3560/

Personally, I would pick a few story arcs featuring them (preferably the origins) and read about them.  I will PM you some links.

Another thing that I found useful is doing the character worksheets.  I'd peruse the stories or the wikis and fill one out.  It certainly helped me on some of the peripheral/minor characters while working on my "ME4 fic," and my OC's of course!

In other news, a joke doing the rounds in the UK:

"Screw you, God!  I said Robbie Williams..."

@Yuri:  TBH, I find that free time is when I'm least likely to write for some reason.  Until recently (while unemployed), I procrastinated soooo much over my musings but now I have a new job and so have limited 'personal time', I seem to cherish it more and I'm more likely to be productive with that time.  Anyone else find that?  That when you have all the time in the world, it rarely seems to be for writing.

I wonder, if writing was my full time job, would it be worse or better having that daily time specifically put aside for writing?  As it is at the mo, I generally just write when the wont takes me.

I totally agree on procrastinating more when you have free time...there are so many distractions.  It's easier to "budget" your time when you are busy...as it forces you to adhere to a schedule.

However, if writing were my JOB, I daresay I'd figure SOMETHING out, what with wanting to get paid and all, lol!

Many professional writers I met said they hire an 'office' so they go 'off to work' and get away from the distractions of just being at home. I think one said it was also handy that they didn't have an internet connection there. Ah, to be a full-time writer...

I definitely don't get more done when I'm busy. classes will start again so soon... like... the time is totes just flying by. and then there'll be studying and papers to write and tests to study for and my sisters to spend time with and take care of in my rare moments of free time, and then I will again get no writing done. that's just how it has worked the past two semesters and I only expect it to get worse as classes get more advanced. so.... I was really hoping to get a lot of writing done this summer and it just didn't happen is all.

hmm. a correction. *frowns* actually, in looking at what I did do this summer, I think I just lied. if I actually put everything I wrote together (like if it was all on one story instead of spread across like 10) then I would have completed roughly 17 chapters. which could be one whole story in some cases. maybe my problem isn't free time. maybe it's just focus. maybe I need to really concentrate on one or two stories instead of writing whatever I'm inspired to write at any given moment. granted, that's 17 rough draft chapters that really need some serious editing and prettying up, but still, that's not all that bad if it wasn't spread into so many different settings.

As said, I've been a bit more productive of late and even posted a few chapters I'd been labouring over.  With it being probably three months or more since I last posted to this piece, and the postings having been erratic on this one, I was well happy to see I got several views and 'a kudos', that some are still reading despite my sporadic nature.  I've even (mentally at least, still needs writing but a way off yet) resolved an anomaly from the original work re: Aria, so I can use the vast majority of what I've already written.

Yay.

*smiles* gratz on the productivity and the resolution of your Aria issue, whatever it may have been. it's good that you're able to adapt your old stuff. rewriting is a huge problem of mine too, so I know how nice it is when you can reuse things and not start them from scratch. I'm sure your readers don't mind a haitus and are just happy for new material to read! that's how I usually feel. even when it's months or even years between releases! I'm just happy that the author is still writing and I have something new to read. *grins*

DA:I news, DA, my fanfics, general BSN stupidity... you name it, it's been keeping me busy.   :P

I am steadfastly avoiding all news DA:I. although honestly I'm not sure why, since the game will be out for like a month before I even have any hope of getting it, and by then I'm sure everything will have been spoiled for me whether I want it to or not... *frowns* and of course, that assumes that I get like a cray amount of Gamestop gift cards or an Xbox One for Christmas...

I do have to say, it seems to me that in the modern age spoilers are like... totes impossible to avoid. sheesh. just watching Heroes of Cosplay I had a romance option for DA:I spoiled that I previously had no idea about. it was a pleasant surprise of a spoiler, but a spoiler still. I mean... who expects a game spoiler in Heroes of Cosplay???

Well, so far, 2 more LIs are yet to be confirmed, though I have a good idea who they'll end up being.  I preordered DA:I through PS Store for my PS3 because 1) I already have a PS3, and 2) I'm not getting a PS4 any time soon.  I just had to preorder the deluxe edition simply because of the extra DLCs.   :D

Also, which LI was spoiled for you?

There is a simple way to avoid spoilers, Yuri. Never leave your house. Never turn on the TV to anything other than the channel that has Transformers on it, completely avoid the internet outside of areas that you know will be spoiler free, and if anyone spoils things for you... kill them. Just rip their throat out with your teeth.

If you do that, no one will spoil anything for you ever again. one reason is you'll probably be serving a life in prison without parole sentence, and the other is no one would want to risk losing their throats. Because... seriously that sounds like a painful way to go.

Also, yes, I am not dead. I just disappeared for a long ass time because... I didn't have anything to really add to the conversations. I was just lurking. Like a creep. Because I am. OOH! Titanfall. Also I'm easily distracted.

Also, serious question time. Does anyone have a method to kill off a character that was really popular in the thing their fanfic is based off of and not receive a bunch of complaints about it?

I forgot her name since the HoC episode I saw it in was like... a couple months ago.  But she's a city elf and a female-only LI. which is always a plus in my book. there's plenty of cool characters who are straight-only LIs in games, so when they cater to me and my girls it's always nice. *smiles*

and I suppose I could preorder it for the 360, but since I'm really really reallyreally banking on getting a One eventually it seems like wasted money, since I'd just have to rebuy for the next-gen. it just kills me that there's a bioware game I won't be playing on like day one (well, since I started seriously playing bioware games anyway... I was sort of late to the party with DA:O)

and Ignis... why not just write them out? given your hatred of my girl Liara, I assume that's who you mean. as the shadow broker you could totes have her running down info and limit her appearances to QEC updates to pass information for certain missions or something. unfortunately with a character as popular as Liara or Tali, you'll get hate if you leave them out. you'll get more if you write them badly, and you'll get a ton (and probably lose readers) for killing them off. it's just a matter of picking the best possible course for you (you can't write what you don't want to write. it just doesn't work, I'm discovering) and dealing with the haters. haters gonna hate. fact of life. *pats sympathetically*

actually, I just thought of a question too. if you were bringing a character that existed in the same universe but a different title into your story (for example, bringing a Buffy character into an Angel story, or, more specific to my situation, bringing Blade into an X-Men story) would you need to publish it as a crossover? or could it stay in the primary fandom with the outside character as a special guest?
