*nod* I'm trying not to worry about that. part of me really wanted to hurry and write my cluedo-inspired fic in time for Halloween since it was thematically the perfect time for it (the story being about a masquerade party and all) but in order to do that, I'd have to heavily neglect my schoolwork and devote like every spare second between now and the end of the month to writing it (which is my way of saying it's not happening... I need to maintain a high GPA no matter what). *frowns* but the same idea pops into my head for a bunch of my other stories... my ME story being years after all the buzz for ME stories, my DA story focusing on a game that has been out for years and years, etc... part of me also wants to write my Walking Dead fic and then save it for the premiere of next season (not this season since that's like... Sunday) and so forth.

but I'm trying really really hard to just write what I want to write when I have time, and not worry about whether it will get views and reviews and stuff. sure, I'd love to have a bunch of reviews for everything (and hopefully positive ones) but I'm going to do my best not to expect them or to be disappointed if I don't get them. especially since most of my story ideas include one or more OCs as starring characters, and I know original characters don't typically draw the most dedicated audience.

but I'm starting to think I'm meant to be writing original works instead of fanfics, because while existing fandoms keep inspiring my ideas, I keep thinking of stuff that I'd have to focus on original characters to accomplish, because it just wouldn't make sense for any of the existing characters in the fandom in question (at least not without retconning like... everything about the character I decided to use. for example, I could use Tali for the role of brilliant hacker set on destroying the Shadow Broker, but given that they're like... both Shepard's squaddies and Tali is a generally sweet girl and I always saw her and Liara as good friends, I'd have to totes butcher her character to make that story work... and then I'd lose out on a bunch of the scenes in my head because they just wouldn't work for a quarian).

*pout* top post, and I have nothing ready for people to see that I could put in for my obligatory top-post fluff! *cries* save me, Stoob!

My tuppence worth on the vid card.

I read recently that nVid card numbers follower this format:

x00 - x40 (e.g. GTX 600 - 640): entry level

x50 - x60: gaming card

x70+: top of the range, enthusiast's card

The 790 I hear is very good.  Have you considered a 'Titan'?  :P

Hah, when I went to my college's PC Dept and told them WHY I refused the upgrade to the max available video card (Quadro K6000), their jaw dropped!  I don't think they realized that the upgrade was more than twice the cost of the rest of the freaking PC!  As for a Titan...yeah, lemme get on that right after I buy a G5 airplane!  :P

Agreed with Yuri about releases...I prefer them to release on their own time.  I want to be happy with the product before declaring it ready for public consumption, even if it "costs" me views, as a story which failed to please me would be more detrimental.  As for original content, there's no reason to keep yourself from it.  There are more than a few stories that "became" original works, after having been conceived as fanfic.

Sometimes, it was b/c OC's made more sense in context of the story...sometimes, it was b/c the story itself made more sense outside the context of another fandom.  As always, it boils down to what makes me, as the author, happy to keep writing...and hopefully compelling for the audience to keep reading!

Sounds interesting enough!  I like the idea of the new universe, seems almost Dead Space.  You asked for ideas though, so I'll give you a few questions to consider...

1) Why Sabretooth's ship?  What made Shepard trust him, of all people?  Why is she losing her biotics?

2) Does any of the old crew know she survived, and if so, why are they leaving her alone (and vice versa)?  How was she rescued without anyone noticing?

Anyhoo yeah, welcome back to the thread (also, how'd that other story work out for you?)!  :)

Thanks for the questions, I will be sure to add those to my brainstorming. :)

(Also on a quick note, what I mean by losing control of her Biotics is that she's starting to have brief periods of anger or sadness and that's causing her to get destructive unintentionally.)

The other story never went anywhere, college has wiped a lot of free time and I reconsidered my original ideas. Originally I wanted to write a few separate characters and have them end up in the story with Shepard, but I decided I'll do it backwards. I write this story about Shepard, and if it starts to get boring I'll branch off and focus on one of the other characters in the story. As for the other idea about writing more about the battles during the Reaper war, I will incorporate those elements into the character that I branch off of.

*dons her obligatory nekomimi gear*

the dust certainly does accumulate in the fall months, doesn't it? at least I have an excuse! my second-youngest sister's birthday was today... or rather yesterday now... so I was busy! and... uh... well, it kept me busy for the previous few days also. yeah! that's it. very busy. planning party stuff and... stuff... *whistles innocently while she dusts and chases out the crickets*

oh... and my sister's birthday wish? $999,999... because she thought it would be too greedy to wish for a million... *shakes head*

ACH!  You beat me to the punch!

Alas, I have less excuses, ended up buying my new graphics card (Radeon r9 280X for those interested) and have been ogling the pretty graphics!  On the bright side, more fodder for me eventual Elder Scrolls fic.  On the bad side, no work on my ME fic.  However, I think I need some time away from writing it, lest I burn out...

Happy Octoberween everyone!  If nothing else, one of my fave things to do, if I find time, is to write a few chapters while still in costume from whatever Halloween party I was designated driver at...I usually end up creating some interesting stories (or scenarios if nothing else)!

Hi

I was wondering if I can post my Transformers Prime/Mass Effect fanfiction series 'Prime Effect' in either the fanfiction forum or in this one?

UPDATE: Never mind, I have seen the Comprehensive list and it shows that crossovers are allowed. So I will create a thread for it and use it to link to the series on Fanfiction.net.

[Stumbles through the unlocked door]

Sorry folks, I've been 'sans computer' for a few weeks, but finally got a new one yesterday(ish)  At least the one good-point of all those extra shifts I ended up working meant I could get something fairly decent (ie won't need to upgrade something before the end of the week!  [Realises it's now Sunday]  Well Monday?   Maybe?   :crying:   'PC MasterRace' <_<   - riigghtt :D)

Anyway, going to admit I've gotten nothing done writing wise for the last couple of weeks.  I had a couple of ideas, but they just fizzled out on me; I'm hoping it was because my brain was just tired and not another case of WB.

@YurigirlzCrush:  Your sister's wish is kind of sweet!  At least she knocked off the 99 cents shops always tack onto things at the end!  (Well it's 99 pence over here, but I suspect it happens on your side of the pond too!   <_<)

@Apollo-XL5:  Hello!  To be honest the fanfic section of the forum seems rather...erm....sedate?  I had thought when the 'big switch' happened all the fan-made stuff was going to be sorted into different sub-forums.  Guess the mods/developers/staff are busy  ...still...

As for 'release schedules' -- I hate them, but I need them!  I think without having some kind of date in my head for when something should be out, I tend to procrastinate far too much.  I'm never really happy with any chapter when I post it, but if I just kept a hold of them trying to work them into something better -- I doubt I'd ever get anything done.  Sometimes you just need that deadline to get things out, flawed as they are, but at least I can then move on to the next piece (which should be better -- but never is!   :? )

[Finds the biscuit tin]

One last thing (and I'm not, just, stalling whilst looking for the bourbon creams )  is anyone here familiar with the open versions of MS Office/Word.  Just if you are is there any you'd recommend?  I'm current not-loving WordPad and before shelling out quids for MS Word etc, thought I'd ask if anyone has  any suggestions.

[Swipes the very last bourbon cream, which had been cunningly hidden under the Ryvitas]

Anyway if anyone has any ideas let me know [backs towards the door] I'm just going to see if I can find some more biscuits [free hand fumbles blindly behind his back, searching for the door handle]  I'll let myself out, no need to get... [finally finds the elusive handle, snatches it downwards, and runs out of the room]

...

In a darkened corner of the 'net

Darn!  It's soggy!  [takes another bite]  Still better than a coconut ring though!

I've used Open Office before, and it is quite competent.  Just make sure you save in the correct format, as it likes to default to ODT files.  Personally, I have gotten used to an older version of Word (2003, which allows unlimited installs), and it just "feels right."  Heck, up until my freshman year in college, I was still using MS Works, of all things!  But yeah, Open Office is a worthy replacement.

Why do people hate coconut sweets?  Sure, they are bad for cholesterol, but chocolate macaroons are always tasty...granted sometimes I feel like having a diabetic shock without milk to accompany, but that holds for many desserts.

"I hate coconut... Not the taste, the consistency."

I have no idea what movie that was from. but I know it was in a movie and it leapt into my mind the second I read that question! *grins* for me, it's the opposite. I absolutely hate the taste of coconut. it actually causes my gag reflex to engage instantly. which leads to a very predictable dislike for the whole experience of eating anything with coconut in it!

also: having leftover birthday cake in the house sucks... I may have to start walking to school to work off all the extra calories! *pout*

Zombieland, Woody Harrelson's character, great movie, btw, even though I was totally burned out on zombie flicks by then!

One of my favorite parts to write about in fics is stuff like personal taste (esp in regards to food).  So many little things that different cultures take for granted!

Indeedly, Seracen, I sort of accidentally made Liara a bit obsessive about food and a messy eater.  She can't get enough of the human Normandy crew's breakfast fry ups, and OD's on chocolate fudge cake one time.     :D  The fry up I describe would be instantly recognisable to a Brit anyway, complete with fried bread.  Mmmm...

Oh, and I've pretty much always used Open Office since writing as the MS Office package is a rip.  For me, Open Office does what a wordprocessor needs to.

Meanwhile...

I said recently I wanted to mix things up a bit in my trilogy sequel and think I've found a way.  After all that went on in the love triangle of Liara/Shep/Ash, I wanted a period of just Shep and Ash.  Not as a love pairing, rather just them being Spectres working together (cue Aria and Vido as antagonists, but you just know Aria's going to come good before the end :)), and also sorting out their differences along the way.  It also creates some much needed jeopardy as the method of them working together involves the Normandy crew (including Liara) being abandoned on Therum in the middle of a Reaper drop and I've decided to leave that open until much later with maybe teasing snippets of their strife, hopefully making Shep and Liara's re-union a little sweeter, assuming Liara survives :o .  Main thing is, even though that's the whole premise right there due to my lack of actual planning, it gives me some much needed direction again.

That is all.

Edit: Except I'll deflect from my pointless waffle to provide this, which I thought quite amusing.

I love Honest Trailers! I have watched like all of them! Some more than once. *grins* They do them for movies too.

I love that one part too... "ugh... there's still so many of these left. let's see... badass, badass, badass, badass, Jersey Shore, MILF, nerd... Boom!"

An edit! If you like that honest trailer, try the Pokémon Red/Blue one. The actual gameplay review was great, but when he renames all 151 pokemon at the end, I was laughing so hard my sides hurt. Especially at a few of them... Like Baby Cthulu and Haunted Vagina.

Just to clarify, I don't hate coconut - it's just after a month of no other biscuits in the house... Anyway just finished downloading Open Office so back to the grindstone!

Enjoyed the trailer - but why did they overlook the most important character? Where's Jacob?

Final question has anyone else here tried some of the Choice of Games apps? They kind of remind me of the old Fighting Fantasy/Lone Wolf books from back when.

Ha!  A fellow Fighting Fantasy fanatic?   :)

Best one? Toss up between Deathtrap Dungeon and Citadel of Chaos for me, though they were all generally good (that said, I wasn't a huge fan of Hell House).

I met Ken Rolston ('Paranoia' RPG writer), Steve Jackson and Ian Livingston at Liverpool's GamesWorkshop grand opening and got a few things signed.  Me and a few friends were there from 3am to ensure a full RPG for just a quid, I believe I went for Call of Cthulu, which we used to play in the dingy water loft for added spookiness.

But no, dunno anything about Choice of Games.

* wanders in looking haggard and tired, sighs, and plops down on a nearby chair *

Ugh, the DA:I forums are ridiculous, and it's only getting worse the closer it gets to DA:I's launch.  Everyone is finding something to complain about; whether it is the LIs, the companions, the advisers, the controls, the graphics, the companions' looks, the lack of non-human Inquisitors being shown in the trailers, the balancing of the romances, and so many other things I'm not even going to bother mentioning.  And that's without even getting started on the complaints about the MP.  Seriously, I must be a masochist because I still check out the Scuttlebutt and Story, Campaign, and Characters forums.  Not to mention that every single group has a support thread except the elves simply because of the ADB and the f'ing Clique.  Seriously, I don't even know why I bother anymore.  There's hate all over the place, flame wars galore, whining in abundance, and so much overall negativity that BSN seems like the worst place to be right now.

The trolls are having a field day with all of this chaos, threads are getting locked, more threads are popping up with complaints and whining, there are spoilers popping up (not that I really care about spoilers), and there are so many arguments that I've given up on trying to keep track of them all.  The only forum in all the DA:I forums that seems to be safe and fairly positive is the MP Combat Strategy forum, but it's fairly empty atm compared to the rest of the DA:I forums.  I haven't been looking at the Keep beta forums (got into the Keep a month or 2 ago), but I'd assume that they're better than the rest of BSN atm.  But since they're all about the Keep, I don't really have much reason to look at them, anyway.

* sighs again *

Sorry, I just needed to vent a bit.  I know this is way off-topic, but I needed to get this off my chest.  Sorry again if I just make the whole thread feel depressing.

you want depressing? I preordered DA:I for the Xbox One... even though I won't be getting my Xbone until Christmas. So that game will be sitting on my shelf, just taunting me for over a month! THAT is depressing. *nod*

seriously though, don't worry about venting. everyone does that from time to time. I guess it's good that I have mostly avoided the DA:I forums. partially to avoid spoilers and partially just because I'm trying not to think of the fact that my most anticipated game since ME3 will be something I will own and be unable to play for more than a month after I get it. *sigh* so I understand how you feel, if maybe for different reasons. *pats* try to ignore the negativity. DA:I will be the best game in like... the last two years!

Corsair

Young Jacob Taylor joins the Corsairs, hoping to make a difference in the universe, fight back against the geth and investigate rumours of dark forces in the galaxy.  In a self-fulfilling prophecy, the Citadel Council fears that the Corsairs' freedom just makes them another rogue organisation in waiting, the Alliance kowtows and limits their work, forcing Taylor into the hands of Cerberus.

ME story I'd like to write, but know I don't have the time/inclination.  I thought it might at least give Jacob a bit of fair 'air time' and strengthen his backstory somewhat.  Haven't really expanded massively on what we already know there, apart from maybe the Council's involvement (everyone likes a "Boo, the council!" here and there).  To digress/expand(?), the odd thing about Jacob was that he was neither a grunt, nor really a specialist but landed more in the former than the latter.  I don't personally think it could be said he is a genuine 'biotic', not to Adept/Vanguard levels, so he was a generally confused character with vague motivations, which in this case (as many agree) resulted in boring.

Here ends my tuppence worth of the day.  Hope you're all well.  And happy weekend!!! (yay)

Huh, sounds like a choose-your-own-adventure novel.  I loved those growing up (probably why my multipath ME fanfic was so relatively easy to write).  I've played a few PC versions, my favorites being the ones that dynamically change (something you can't get in print).  However, I have yet to play any of these particular games, and may have to give them a go when classes free up!

Sorry, I just needed to vent a bit.  I know this is way off-topic, but I needed to get this off my chest.  Sorry again if I just make the whole thread feel depressing.

I have to remind myself of how I originally came to these forums in the first place...the ME3 ending fiasco.  You want to talk about toxic forums?  Man...

To be fair, there was still plenty of interesting and worthwhile conversations to be had, but 30-50% was trollbait.  Unfortunately, a few of the choices EA and BW made have burned bridges with quite a few people, many of whom remain inconsolable regardless of redress.  I wouldn't let myself get too worked up over it.  I recall one thread where I realized I was getting roped into an angry debate.

I extricated myself from the argument.  It galled a bit to know that the other person was probably going to "get the last word," but then I realized that it didn't really matter.  The only place I "lost face" was in the eyes of some jackass who I couldn't care less about.  I will reiterate something I stated back when a bit of snipiness was almost starting to occur on this thread...

I come here to vent, to engage in healthy conversation, but most of all TO HAVE FUN.  If I am stressing out over a damn forum post on a recreational website, the entire exercise has failed, and I have utterly missed the point of coming here in the first place.  That isn't to say I can't be passionate about something, but the minute it goes from a spirited debate to a heated argument, it is time to disengage...I get enough of that nonsense in my regular life.

There's a reason why I come back to this particular thread.  Indeed, it is currently the only one I actively engage in!

As for DA: Inquisition...I will reserve judgement for that.  I am trying not to have too high hopes for it.  I won't lie, I am still gun-shy after what happened with DA2 and ME3...but I am cautiously optimistic.  Will it be well-produced?  Will it have engaging story?  Will it have varied characters?  The answers to all of these in an unequivocal "YES!"  The more important question, then, is "to what degree?"

The catch is that we have come to expect more than greatness from BW, we demand an immaculate product that will rock our socks off (which is a testament to the minds at BW in the first place).  It isn't for me to say what will happen, but what's currently known about the game is more than enough.  I've played and enjoyed games imbued with far less devotion, care, and pedigree.  But again, it's a question of degrees.  I am curbing my enthusiasm, in the hopes that it does engage me in a way I haven't felt since Skyrim or Witcher 2.  If I expect the 2nd Coming, I am in for disappointment.  To be fair, my expectations for ME3 may have been...inflated...but no more so than a 5 year investment is due!

Incidentally, my previous video card purchase ensures me 3 free game codes, so I am hoping DA: Inquisition is on the list.  If so, I will have paid off the game already when I bought the AMD Radeon, which I am totally okay with!  Still adamantly against installing Origin though, so I am hoping the code is either Steam or Direct-2-Drive.

Further incidentally, I imagine a free game voucher for Inquisition is likely to improve my rating of the game, lol!  Now if only Witcher 3 makes it to that list...I will have all my PC game purchases pretty well squared away, and still have one left over!

All that talk of old school RPGs must have brought on the muses for my Halloween musical challenge track.   :)

Instrumental Rock, in case anyone needs advance warning lol.

Face of Cthuhlu

I should just add... the avatar on my music profile is a character from a British TV prog 'MonkeyDust' that featured various animators' works, the character being one of the 'crap Islamic terrorists' from one of the sketches.  Their plans were usually interrupted by Mrs Khan offering various western treats, such as McCain MicroChips with Birdseye Chicken Griddlers followed by a Vienetta.
