*deep breath* this is totes off-subject, but I just need to rant a little...

I can't remember if I mentioned that I got Alien: Isolation from my little sisters for Christmas, but I did. and I have to say that whoever developed this game did a lot of things very well. it builds tension extremely well. from the music to the sounds to the environments, after a half hour of playing, I'm jumping at every little thing and scrambling to find cover every time one of the automatic doors opens as I pass. I like the main character, the acting is mostly good, and the alien is unscripted and cray smart. it learns what you do and doesn't fall for the same tricks over and over, forcing you to mix things up. these are all positives in my book. *another deep breath* however, there is one major major downside to the game.

[snip]

tl;dr: the idea of having to access manual save points to save progress in a game instead of being able to save wherever and whenever or having an autosave every time you complete something major is horrible. if they patched in an autosave, this game would get an easy 9/10 rating from me.

Yeah, I picked the game up as part of a sale, and look forward to the game.  I feel you on the manual saving though.  I've never been a fan of games that restrict savegames like that.  I feel that there are 2 main reasons for implementing such a system:

1) to avoid save-scumming (ie: go back and play it "perfectly")

2) to build an artificial sense of tension b/c you don't want to lose the last X hours of gameplay, or only have X saves left

Again, admirable concepts, but I feel it should be up to the player how they play the game.  If they want to "ruin" the experience, that's their call.  So long as it doesn't actively hurt other players (like cheating in MP mode), then that should be the player's choice (such as no fast-travel runs, etc).  To wit, I heard about a mod for Farcry that removes all the restrictions placed on the player.  Apparently, the opening up of the game in such a way made the experience far more enjoyable for many players, and the mod is one of the most popular for that game.

At the end of the day, choice is always a good feature, and it's inclusion is generally a positive.  Of course, that concept became a rather hot-button topic for BW, but I digress.

On that note...considering incorporating choice into my next fic, make it a bit more interactive.  While I think it might be an interesting ploy to garner readers and reviews, I am unsure whether I would enjoy that process of writing, and the delays that would invariably come with it.  Moreover, knowing me, it'd end up going the same way regardless, rendering the choices meaningless and insincere.  That's why my multipath ME3 fic was such an aberration, rarely do I write in such a manner.

Top post, so I'll try this quoting random clips of my story thingy...

[confrontational scene with Ashley]

Shepard turned around, "when I close my eyes, I'm still reliving that damn war...I'm still fighting on Elysium, still shooting husks, still burning with my family on Mindoir."

He turned, seeing the visions in his mind even now.  The dreams were actually worse than what he'd faced in life.  It was something he hadn't considered possible.  Shepard continued to rant, as if baring his soul.

He pointed at Liara, "I see her...dead."

He pointed at Jack, "I see her...dead..."

He pointed at Ashley, "I see you...dead..."

He gestured to the rest of the Normandy, "I see all this...burning..."

Ashley bonelessly shook her head, feeling a chill run down her spine.

"Not a day goes by that I don't think of the losses, of the thousands... millions... trillions that I've laid to waste.  (SPOILER) died, hell, an entire system of batarians died, because of ME.  Entire civilizations sacrificed because of ME...because I wasn't fast enough, or strong enough, or smart enough...because I wasn't ruthless enough...kind enough....”

Ashley shook her head, her eyes widening, "you still see them?  You still hear voices from that damn war?"

She seemed to be afraid of something.  Shepard shook his head, unable to understand her.  So many dead had been left in his wake.  Surely she must feel the same burden as well.

"You want to know the truth Ash?!  I killed them all...as surely as I killed Anderson, or Legion...Thane...Mordin..."

Shepard's face fell, as he closed his eyes, "as surely as I killed...Kaidan...so many years ago...left him on that burning rock..."

Williams looked up at him, her eyes blurry and unfocused.

"Not a day goes by Ash...that I don't hear their voices.”

The first Human SPECTRE shook his head.  Surely, Ashley should have understood.  She'd lost her entire command once, as had he.  They owed it to their men to continue the fight...to live for their sake...to make sure the sacrifice wasn't wasted...

"Now you tell me...if I still have what it takes to get the job done, because this is all I know..."

Geez...I do like my melodrama...

I apologize, because I know you said grammar corrections from readers are nitpicky. but that's my thing. when I read someone's fanfic I always review, and I always include my patented "chapterly error pointy out time." (unless the writer asks me not to, of course, because I only point them out so the writer can fix them if they want). but I just have to point out that your whole excerpt is written past-tense, except for:

He turned, seeing the visions in his mind even now.

the word "now" tripped me up there as I read. shouldn't it be "even then"? or "even as he spoke"? or something that carries the past tense. just a thought. it's a minor thing really. but I'm one of those people who reads every word when I read. I never skim. so when I trip over something, I like to point it out so it can be fixed (if necessary).

but as to the game... I went back at it this morning after my sister woke me up, and finally managed to finish that mission! it sure took me long enough. but it's finally done! and I do understand that the lack of free saves does add to the tension (but they honestly do a good enough job with tension without saves being an issue. the atmosphere of the game is great). but I still think it would be a vast improvement if they patched in an autosave. just after the major accomplishments. like for that mission, there were three parts. I needed to get a code and use it to open a door, find a certain dead guy and retrieve a keycard from him, and then use the card to access an elevator. if it autosaved when I used the code to open the door, then after I got the keycard, it would have been much better. it doesn't have to autosave every 10 seconds (honestly, it probably took fifteen to twenty minutes per objective, when you factor in all the sneaking, hiding, and waiting). but just one save per major objective is completed would be really nice...

but I finally did it! there were many epic fails (when I got mad and just tried to run from place to place instead of playing hide and seek was the best one... pro tip: running attracts attention very very quickly!). but I do have to admit, after so many tries, it felt really, really good when I finally got into that darn elevator!

anywho, this is the first weekend since the semester started that I have no major papers to write or major tests to study for (although I do need to study a little). but I am hopeful that I might actually be able to write for fun a little bit this weekend. it's been soooooooooo (10 o's!) long.

Congrats on completing that mission Yuri!

As for the writing: yeah, I have an odd style for some folks.  I have to correct how I do quotes in stories, as apparently I learned some backward way of doing it back in the day.  As for the tense ("now' vs "then"), I see your point as well.  I don't know, it sounds right in my head though.  I guess it's b/c I am switching from the author-in-Shepard POV, vs standard 3rd person omniscient.  Not saying that's right though, and I can see how switching tenses can be jarring.  If I ever get a proper editor, they are likely to strangle me, lol!

Tolkein said that he caught hell from his editors over such things, b/c he'd intentionally use odd grammar (or switch tenses) to put the reader in the appropriate mindset.  I don't pretend to be THAT talented, lol.  I think I just picked up certain habits along the way, and have to separate the good from the bad.

EDIT: ooh...on the subject of bothersome game checkpoints...

One of my friends had to bring over her game save for Mass Effect 3, so I could get her past the final battle sequence before hitting the relay beam at the end.  She'd somehow managed to remain spoiler free all that time.  It was both refreshing and distressing to see her reactions to the ending.

We went through original, then extended cut (and the multiple main endings for each).  Then we spent an hour looking at fan created endings.  At the finish of our run, she turns to me and says: "well, no wonder you wrote your own!"

LOL!  Good times...

On a random note...I am utterly bamboozled by one of my recent reviewers.  I don't know whether they are being arrogant/ignorant, or if they just speak in a manner that I occasionally find abrasive.  I don't think I've ever been so passive-aggressive in my replies before, but I have to strike SOME balance between "hey, that isn't cool" and "thanks for the feedback."

I'd say more, but I'd start rambling.  Also, I am unsure if they'd try to find me on this board just to badger me into responding to their reviews, it's that kind of situation.  Who the heck replies to a comment you made FOR ANOTHER PERSON'S WORK, all to get you to reply to their review that they left ON ANOTHER WEBSITE?!

Admittedly, I've added to the situation by engaging in such a protracted conversation, but I don't want to be rude either.  I also have to be wary of it leaking into my mood when replying to other reviewers.  At this point, I just find it odd.  Endearing, in a way, and perturbing in others, but just...odd.  I daresay, if I weren't a dude and over 6 ft tall, I might also feel more threatened, but it takes a lot to push me into panic.

Aww, it gets lonely having conversations by myself!

Ah well, better help out and clean, don't wanna leave it all for Yuri... [proceeds to vacuum]

thanks, Seracen! I appreciate not having to clean. mid-terms have started and I am both exhausted and busy these days. *sigh*

although, on a school-related note, I do have to say that the spring semester is a scheduling mess! I'm on spring break from March 7th - 15th, and then I go back to classes for a couple of weeks, and then Easter break from April 1st to the 7th, and then classes resume for another month, and then finals begin in May. so... why not postpone spring break and add those 9 days to the Easter break, rather than have us go home, come back, go home again, come back, etc...

it's less of an issue for me since I commute, but for people who dorm at the school, I imagine all the back and forth travel must be rather frustrating!

Yeah, I've been writing a bunch of term papers lately.  Only saving grace is that all the snow has translated into days off, so I've had more time to get my work done.  Best of luck to everyone who's taking classes!

ohhhhh.... I am suddenly feeling a little disappointed in game companies!

so... I was just looking at the available DLC for my Alien: Isolation game. there are already a handful of DLC add-ons out there, mostly for Survival Mode, and each one costs about $8. there's also a season pass for $20. now in the past when I got a season's pass for a game (I only ever got one season pass before), it meant I was able to download all of the DLC for that game free (and got early access to them) which was an awesome deal. so I was about to just buy the season pass. then (thank god!) I read the details: 25% off all of the current and future DLC released for the game.

so.... there are four major DLCs so far, and I can get $2 off of each one, for a total of $8... and it only costs me $20 to take advantage of this amazing deal! *stares* seriously? just the idea makes me want to find someone that works for the company and kick them in the junk. unless they plan on releasing another 6 DLCs at the same price, you won't even save the amount spent on the pass!

on a whim, I went and looked at Assassin's Creed 4, which I got for free with my XB1 but haven't played yet. and found yet another season pass that offers a discount on DLC, but not enough total savings on DLC to cover the cost of the pass! this is getting awfully shady. *frowns* I will officially never, ever buy a season pass again unless the season pass comes free with my game purchase (and thus all the savings are cost-free), allows the free download of all future content, or it at least provides enough of a discount to cover the cost of the pass itself plus a minimum of 10%!

I am now seriously annoyed with both game companies. seriously. this borders on theft! I certainly don't see how it could be described as anything less than a scam...

[snip - terrible DLC practices]

Yeah, the "Season Pass" hasn't been a good value for a long time.  I got screwed on my fighting games.  It's appalling that I could buy the damn thing at launch WITH THE FULL PRICED GAME, and still not get all the content.  YET: someone who simply waited 6 months gets everything for $40.  Disgusting, and indicative of why DLC practices are so reviled, and so many companies are suffering financially (in the long run).  Personally, I've boycotted buying anything from specific vendors (or whenever I see such practices), barring used or deep discount.  Rarely do I buy anything at launch anymore.  Incidentally, from what I understand of the Alien: Isolation DLC, very little of it is worthwhile, unless you are a big fan of the multiplayer.

In other news, I had a long drive again tonight.  So I decided to play some music while driving, and work on one of the present stories in my head.  I just got finished putting my brainstorm to word processor a few minutes ago!  This is the most significant amount of work I've done on my story for months.  I daresay the hardest and most "boring" part is over with (for me anyway, it ranks up there)!  Now if I can only stop being lazy and get to chipping away at those chapters, haha!

Well I got around to posting the 'Valentine' piece, minus the Tali close, which just leaves it   with no heart-warming conclusion.  Not sure how I feel about that...

Anyway hope things are going well folks.

*straightens nekomimi, tightens the apron on her maid's costume, and sets to work*

so, midterms are done. and I have literally been comatose since around this time yesterday. who sleeps for 21 hours? I mean seriously! yes, I missed a lot of sleep writing papers and studying for exams but... 21 hours? that's just... embarrassing!

however, I did come here for an on-topic question for once!

how do you think biotic stasis works? does it literally put the victim into stasis so that they are unaware of time or their surroundings? or is it like... a super-dense field that just keeps them immobile? the name would suggest the former, but if that's the case, how can you shoot them while they're frozen? wouldn't the bullets become frozen too? *winces* and then I suppose they'd get them all at once when it wore off, unless they lost their momentum when they froze. which would probably be likely. *sigh* I'm too tired to think about this! it's making my brain hurt again!

but what do you all think? stasis = frozen in time? or trapped and unable to move, but awake and aware?

basically I had two scenarios float through my head when I woke up, but to use one, the other would be excluded. either you could trap someone in stasis and leave, and it would seem to them as if you just vanished, or you could trap them in stasis and talk to them while they can't get away. but I can't see it working both ways. either they're aware or they're not. right? hmm. *ponders*

Congrats on the post!  As for the close...well, you could always publish an addendum epilogue.  I faked out my readers with 2 or 3 endings on my first fic, with a few epilogues, haha!

I think it's up to individual interpretation.  It's important to note that a person in Stasis doesn't take damage until you max out the tree and pick that specialization, although that's more gameplay.

Personally, I feel that it simply freezes a person's movement, but not necessarily his/her aging.  PERHAPS it affects their awareness of surroundings as well.  I could see any number of tortures if it didn't, however.  I feel that "freezing them in time" would accord too much power to biotics; while kinetically freezing everything in that space sounds more logical.

I say "kinetic" b/c that accounts for ALL movement, but not necessarily internals and the like.  As such, perhaps they WOULD remain aware.  Again, I saw they should remain cognizant of surroundings, but I could see a case for the other way.

The wiki isn't much help in this regard:  http://masseffect.wi...com/wiki/Stasis

However, I would liken ME's "stasis" more akin paralysis and stoppage of kinetic energy, as opposed to "suspended animation"

PS: Congrats on finishing midterms!  Don't feel bad about the 21 hours.  I've done it too, and felt guilty about it; but your body clearly needed it if you slept that long.  I've done similar things after overseas trips or really long study sessions (also after the 2 times in my life where I've had day long gaming sessions).

I'd think it'd be like the stasis bubble Liara was in in ME1, tbh.  Well, ME3 Stasis, at least.  ME1 and ME2 Stasis would be closer to suspended animation.  tbh, I'd go with ME3-style Stasis since it's less complicated.

Anyway.... I've been toying with a lot of ideas for my fanfics, though the majority of them I can't implement yet due to my fanfics not being far enough along plot-wise.  Also kind of stuck on AWL, but I'll probably jump to doing the next chapter for my SI fanfic in the meantime (need to replay Seb's Act III quest).

Oh, and I guess I'm back.   ^_^

Welcome back Gamer!

Yeah, Stasis changed so much from game to game.  Also, trying to explain the logistics of "Reave" outside of gameplay can also cause similar shenanigans, lol!  That's why I generally play fast and loose with the powers whenever I write, so long as a plausible explanation is given.  The alternative is just blindly using the powers with no explanation whatsoever.  So long as you don't get bogged down on details, that method can work too, haha!

*waves* thanks everyone!

the reason I asked was because I had two little snippets of ideas in my head. one where someone spots Liara out of the corner of their eye and she freezes them when they turn to get a better look, which if it was suspended animation would make it seem like she just disappeared or maybe they were seeing things. and the other where an ally tries to attack her, and she freezes them so she could explain something. but like I said, I can't use both so I have to decide which way it works. cuz like I said, either it's suspended animation or it's not! *smiles*

it's Monday... and I have no classes! spring break rules! (although with all the snow and the cold around here it feels more like winter break). but still, I'm sooooooo relieved to have a week of total relaxation ahead of me. *happy sigh* hope everyone is having a fantabulous day!

Oops, got sidetracked by various stuff again.

*another deep breath* however, there is one major major downside to the game.

manual save points.

this is a horrible, horrible idea. you can't pause and save from the menu, it doesn't autosave whenever you accomplish a major task, you have to access machines on the wall to save your game. why is this a problem, you ask? because I've had the game since Christmas. I play it fairly regularly. and I have been stuck on mission five for two freaking months! two months! that's insane!

That's incredibly frustrating. I'm not that good at playing games anyway, so I rage-quit if I have to go through an entire mission over and over and over, finally almost reach the last step, and have to start over again. If they're not going to add autosave points, then they should add a manual save feature. It's not like that would take an option away from players who actually want to try running through the game without saving, and it'd make the game a lot less frustrating. Glad you finally got past that mission, but being stuck on it for two months is definitely a mark against the game's developers. A game should be enjoyable, not something that makes your blood pressure skyrocket.

As for the game itself, I was kind of interested in it until I saw some gameplay footage. I understand why they made the tech look like the 1979 movie, but I've never been able to get into "retro" stuff. I mean, if people are still using monochrome CRT screens and cassette tapes in 2137 or whenever, then something has gone horribly wrong.  :P

LOL!  Good times...

  That must've been quite a conversation. First time I played that game, I couldn't even bring myself to try out all three "endings." Just couldn't subject myself to it again. However, having played it a few months back with the MEHEM and Citadel Epilogue mods, I can say it's a huge improvement. I still think the entire first section, with the Reapers invading, was a complete misfire, and there are bits throughout the game that were just bad, but those mods gave the game replay value. I can play it without the sheer dread at what's waiting at the end. I still don't consider it the real ending, though.  ;) But the mods might be an option for her if she wants to actually enjoy the game.

It's a shame when someone thinks it's okay to try something like that. I hope it's blown over by now.

I don't recall having anything like that happen with a reviewer before, though I do occasionally get a comment that just confuses me, as I think I've mentioned before. The latest one is a quick comment someone on AO3 left on one of my TFP fics: "Dear God! All-Spark!"   I just sat there and wondered what the hell it even meant. Haven't replied to it yet for that reason. I just have no idea what to even say to it.

ohhhhh.... I am suddenly feeling a little disappointed in game companies!

I read the details: 25% off all of the current and future DLC released for the game.

so.... there are four major DLCs so far, and I can get $2 off of each one, for a total of $8... and it only costs me $20 to take advantage of this amazing deal!

Ugh.  :(  I've only bought a season pass once, with Saints Row IV, and got a pretty good value from it. But if this is a thing the companies are doing now, then I won't buy another one. I'll just wait for the DLC to go on sale super cheap on Steam, if they're ones I'm interested in. That's just a huge ripoff.

What really bugs me, in particular, is when essential content is taken out of the game and sold as separate DLC ... Javik, for instance. It'd be another thing entirely if the game is complete and then sometime later optional DLC is released with a low enough price tag. "Okay, this looks like fun, I'll spend three or four dollars on this." When I started looking at the DLC for Saints Row: The Third, I did pick up a few of the spendier ones, but those were worth it, for me at least. They added to my enjoyment of the game immensely, and I had enough fun with it to keep playing the game over and over for two or three years, and every now and then I load it up and do another playthrough. But when they carve out parts of the main game to screw us out of more money, or put out DLC that doesn't add anything to the experience or is an outright disappointment ... then they must not want my money very badly. And they're certainly not getting any of it.

I've only pre-ordered three games. ME2, which I loved so much I kept playing it for two or three years. ME3, which ... yeah, you already know how that turned out. And Saints Row IV, which I was completely happy with and was another one I kept playing over and over because it was so much fun. But I tend not to pre-order games unless I'm absolutely certain it'll be worth it ... and even then, I could still get burned. If there's another Saints Row game someday, I'll probably pre-order it unless I'm still trying to get by on $5/hour, then it'll have to wait until Steam does one of its 90%-off sales. But ME4 ... no pre-order -- no order at all, in fact, because I just couldn't care less. If I find out from actual players that it's a genuinely good game, I'll still wait until it's in the bargain bin before I fork over any money.

Right now, the only game I would've pre-ordered if I had the money for it, is the PC version of GTA V. And then I would've gotten really antsy because the release date keeps getting pushed back. First it was at the end of January, then sometime in February, then March, and now it's sometime in April. From everything I've seen, it's an amazing game, but after expecting it to be released in January and then having to wait until April, and then not being at all sure if the release will be delayed again, I probably would've wanted my money back. I'm still planning to buy it, but again, given my income, and unless something changes drastically, I might have to wait a few more months for it to go on sale.

Speaking of games ... particularly bad ones ... a few days ago I discovered something truly glorious. On YouTube I found a Let's Play of Ride to Hell: Retribution. I didn't even know this game existed until a few days ago, but from what I've seen ... I just have no words. The Let's Play is one of the funniest things I've ever seen, and the game is so bad, so completely broken, so poorly written and poorly acted, it really is "so bad it's good." I'm dying to play it, now. It's like the video game equivalent of Plan 9 from Outer Space. If I can ever get my hands on a copy, I'll probably record my first playthrough and lay down a commentary track over it ... which will probably consist mostly of me laughing my ass off mixed with comments like, "Wait -- what the **** just happened? Why did that tree explode?!" It would just be beautiful:lol:

And finally, I've gotten some good news on the publishing front. My novel that was accepted two years ago has finally been assigned an editor. I'm hoping it's not too much longer before they email me the requested edits so I can move on to the next stage.

Game Over, which I've mentioned before, has gone live on a bunch of different sites -- Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Kobo, Google Books, and iBooks. The rough draft was given the 2015 Editor's Choice Award on Textnovel back in January, so I actually have some hope that it sells.

And the anthology I've mentioned before, which includes my story featuring the scarred character I've talked about a few times, is on its way. Final edits have been done, the ebook was formatted, and advanced review copies are going out. There's even a form to fill out for people who want to read it and then post a review when it hits Amazon on March 17. I'm told already that one of the people who have signed up so far loved it and is eager to review it.

I admit I'm a little bit nervous. As mentioned before, it's a romance anthology, and I don't think my story fits in aside from having a relationship developing between the protagonist and the guy she meets early in the story. There are no hot-and-steamy sex scenes. It's more of an adventure with a lot of humor and some horror elements that come up late in the story. So what I'm wondering is, will reviewers find it a pleasant surprise and think it stands out? Or will they be disappointed because they're expecting a lot of sex and finding none?  :P

Either way, I had a hell of a lot of fun developing this character and writing a story around her.  :D I've already got ideas for expanding it into a full novel so I can add in more characters who appeared in Game Over (as this is kinda-sorta a sequel, but focuses on a new protagonist), add more character development, and cycle the POV through all the main characters instead of focusing on just one for this story. So whether or not my story is a success with the anthology's intended audience, I now have another novel waiting to be written, and it all started with that surprising and perplexing invitation I got last month.

So, anyway, if anyone wants to get hold of the review copy and then write a review on the 17th, just click the above link.  :D

Took long enough, but things are finally coming together for me and my writing ....

Congrats on the stories again!  I wouldn't worry too much about your entry into the anthology though.  If the selection board chose it, they did so for a reason.  I can understand your apprehension though, an author/artist NEVER feels like their work is truly done, lol!  Give yourself some credit, I'm sure it'll be fine (if the readers know what's good for them, haha)!

As for myself, I thankfully was able to resolve the issue I had.  I am unsure whether it was due to the limitations of PM's (in regards to conveying emotions, etc), but the various conversations ended amicably enough.

*waves* congrats on things going your way for the writing, ftkerns! sounds like it is long overdue. *smiles*

I am actually not a hater of DLC, to respond to some of the things you responded to. I mean... yes, some of it is bad. and I'm not a super-heavy gamer, so I don't have a ton of experience with it, but I have generally been happy with it. I didn't buy any of the Alien: Isolation ones after I tried survival mode (because most of them are just survival expansions, and that mode is ridiculously horrible. time-sensitive missions where you literally lose reward points by the second... in a game where you sometimes have to hide for upwards of five minutes until the stupid alien decides to run off into a vent and go somewhere else for a while).

but... as far as my DLC experience...

Dragon Age: Origins... all DLC owned (except Feastday gifts and pranks). every bit of it was totally worth it. never regretted buying a single one.

Mass Effect 1: have both DLC, and for the price (included for free with Platinum Hits edition) I am completely satisfied.

Mass Effect 2: have all the DLC except the alternate appearance packs ("pay to look pretty" in games is a waste of money IMO no matter how pretty you can look). loved all of it and considered them worth every penny.

Dragon Age 2: got all of the DLC. and honestly, considering the problems with the main game, the DLCs were the best part! by far!

Mass Effect 3: have it all (again) and I considered it money well spent. I know people complain about the DLC because "X made no sense" and "Y didn't expand on the story" but they were enjoyable to play every time, featured the characters I love, and expanded on a game I didn't hate nearly as much as everyone else. were there flaws? sure. but after the Citadel DLC and the Extended Cut ending, I actually consider it a fairly good game. oh. and incidentally, I didn't consider Javik an "essential" part of the game that was carved out. one friend I know who plays Mass Effect was vehemently anti-Prothean inclusion... he thought adding Javik was a horrible idea and never downloaded the DLC at all, and I remember there being a bunch of people before the game came out that had similar thoughts. some people wanted Protheans and Collectors included, and some people were firmly against the ideas. that seems like a good basis to make something DLC. the people that want it can have it and the people that don't don't have to deal with it.

Battlefield 3: was a present from a friend because he's into shooters and wanted me to play with him. the game came with the season pass, the only pass I ever owned, and is what I thought Season Passes were supposed to be. every DLC free. and there were a lot of DLCs. would have been worth every penny.

Assassin's Creed 1, 2 and Brotherhood: own all three, never bought any DLC from them. I got tired of the series halfway through Brotherhood. lack of a female protagonist sort of soured me on the series. It's one of my pet peeves. also, as a compulsive completionist, the challenges for total synchronization became frustrating and sucked all the fun out of Brotherhood. "Assassinate the target in 4:00 or less without being seen for total synchronization" sure. except it takes me two minutes just to figure out how to platform my way to the top of the wall, and then another 8-10 to sneak past all the freaking sentries. 4 minutes my ass! *growls*

The Walking Dead (both seasons): these ones bother a lot of people who look at them like a 10-hour game carved into 5 parts for the game company to make extra money. but if you buy the season pass (oooo! I own three season passes!) they're basically 20 dollar games instead of $25. and so worth the money.

Singstar: Okay, I admit this one is a cash siphon. But this game sees so much play in my house that every song I paid extra for as DLC has gotten its money's worth in use 100 times over.

Alien: Isolation: It came with the "Crew Expendable" pack for free, and I'll play that eventually just because I have it. but I don't think I'll be purchasing any of the other DLC. "Crew Expendable" is basically the first movie's second half, and you take on the role of a cast member of your choice (from those still alive after the alien is free on the ship) and try to figure out how to corner the alien and get rid of it. there's another DLC that lets you take the part of Ripley at the end of the movie, where you set the self-destruct and then try to reach the escape pod. but replaying the movie doesn't really interest me all that much. Although I did really like the game itself.

Dragon Age: Inquisition: LOVED the game. Immensely! And I eagerly await DLC to expand on it.

That's my entire game library. Like I said, while I do play video games, I don't think I really qualify as a "gamer". I'm sure most hardcore gamers would scoff at me and my 13-game collection. but generally speaking, I like DLC. it freshens up games I've previously finished and gives me a reason to go back and play them again (or just gives me more of what I love in games I'd replay a bunch anyway, like ME2).

Oh I generally love DLC.  It's just that the market has become toxic with poor business practices (as happens before every bubble bursts in ANY market).  It's a sad trend that is alienating a lot of gamers, while other gamers remain oblivious of the fleecing.

More on topic: I've taken to writing at least a once a day, even if it's a "paint by numbers" affair.  The idea is that I'll go back and improve the work in the editing process.  I've found that, while I'm not as inspired to write at length, I still have a solid drip of ideas to continue the writing process.  It isn't as fun for me this way, but it does provide steady gains.

The idea is: if not one chapter, at least one scene; if not one scene, at least one page.   Not my preferred method of writing, but there you go.  The only reason I can even DO this approach is because of all the groundwork I laid at the beginning of my writing process (so that I know effectively all the plot-points and characters, if not every fine nuance).  Moreover, I think I've worked out much of the catharsis I felt I needed with my previous works.  I'm still looking forward to writing this project, but the first 5-10 chapters are not as interesting to me, since I've done some iteration of the Crucible scenario multiple times already, haha!  I'll admit, work/classes are also sapping me of much of my inspiration to write.

A reader asked if I was willing to a rewrite the entire trilogy.  While flattered, my response was "HEELL NOOO," though a bit nicer, lol!

Anyhoo, anyone else set themselves minimum limits like this?  For that matter, anyone set themselves MAXIMUM limits?  I am trying to stay under 300 pages on this one (preferably under 200), but am unsure, considering my last work was a 400 page monster (also considering that a page in MS Word translates to 1.5-2 pages in paperback)!

Huh...odd.  I thought I'd ask others in this Thread if they've posted their stories as a separate Thread in the "Fan Fiction" forum.  Usually, such posts are good for at least a reply or two, yet I haven't garnered any.

I'm not fishing for reviews, though I certainly wouldn't mind.  However, if anyone has some time, please check out my first post and let me know if the presentation of the links/stories is daunting, or can be streamlined in someway.

I write primarily for my own entertainment, so reviews are only ever icing on the cake for me, but it's just odd to not receive ANY replies to a conversation in the forums.  Ah well, back to writing the new story I go!

*ponders* I checked out your link. the only thing I can think is that maybe people who visited the other thread didn't want to reply because you included chapters. maybe they are under the impression that you intend to publish the stories in that thread and don't want to interrupt with comments?

on my own writing, I really need to find some motivation. I've had the whole week free... my sisters are at school or work during the day, so I don't even have my baby sister as a distraction from 8am to 4pm, and yet any time I turn on my laptop, it's been to mess around on Facebook, watch Youtube videos, or similarly waste time that could have been spent more productively. I haven't written anything at all. sad face. I just need to figure out how to motivate myself to write. *frowns*

Yeah, I can understand.  I want to set aside time each day to do some writing.  I get my homework done, finish my actual work, take care of the nephews, and then have the last half of the day to myself.  Yet, instead of working on the story, I putz around on the internet all day.  I'd actually feel better if I was wasting my time playing a game, or reading a book.

I dunno, the urge to write doesn't hit me until right before bedtime.  Somewhere, it's hardwired that the best time to write is in the dead of night (or in the library at campus if I am stranded there for a few hours).  That's why I've instituted that "one page a day" rule for myself, just to ensure this doesn't get put on the backburner.

I don't know what to tell you in terms of motivation.  Myself, writing CAN be tiring, if fun.  As such, perhaps you are just too weary to sit down and write at the end of the day?  Heck, sometimes I forego games b/c I can't be bothered to actually play and figure out the game mechanics/leveling system...hence movies or putzing around on the internet.

At the end of the day, I feel that writing is probably vying for my attention with ALL the other entertainment possibilities.  As such, perhaps it's a function of what I am in the mood to write.  Perhaps you could start off with a short story that you've been itching to write, then slowly segue into the larger projects.  That's what I would do, if ANY of my works were short stories, lol!

EDIT: thanks for checking the other thread Yuri.  I think the Fanfiction Thread is mostly inactive, or really really slow.  I didn't realize until looking again, but some of the front page comments are from several months back!

Just a couple of quick things for now. Between the job and spending the last couple days trying to tidy up my apartment for an inspection (even though the rental company already did an inspection last month  ), just got home from work a while ago, and can barely stay awake long enough to type this. More substantial post coming ASAP, probably on my next day off.

Thanks!  :D  I sure hope I'm worried over nothing. The editors seemed to love the story, so ... I saw a couple of early reviews (more on that below) and so far it's looking good.

Glad you were able to resolve that issue, too. And yeah, it can be really difficult to pick up the "tone" of the message. Maybe FF.net should add emoji or something to their PM system.

*waves* congrats on things going your way for the writing, ftkerns! sounds like it is long overdue. *smiles*

Thank you!  :D I'm still hoping it actually leads to bigger things and doesn't just fizzle out instead.

The book has been put up on Amazon for pre-order, and will go live on the 17th. A Goodreads page has also been set up, and so far it's been given four 5-star ratings and three reviews. One of those reviews offers detailed comments on each story ... and I couldn't help noticing the longest paragraph was devoted to my entry in the anthology.  B)  And I think I'll take a moment to stroke my ego by quoting said review ....

Mission to Bellatrix by Fred T. Kerns- Rating- 5

This was my first sci-fi book I've ever read all the way through. It's not my cup of tea, but I really enjoyed this one. Kolya has a scarred face that has been a slight hindrance in helping her meet a love interest because of this she's a hitchhiker for spaceships and ends up meeting Donovan on her way to board a ship that's going to explore a long-lost ship. This was closer to a full length novel at 18 chapters, which threw me for a loop. I kept expecting things to pick up quicker than they did. However, the novel was long enough that we got a lot of what is going on. I really enjoyed all the awesome innuendos. The crew of the ship were likable and at times had me laughing. There aren't any sex scenes in this story, it closes the door right on them. I loved the relationship between Donovan and Kolya and how we got to see it blossom slowly and sweetly. I can't believe I liked this one as much as I did, in fact I might make my husband read this one!

Heheh. If this keeps happening and readers suggest it to people who wouldn't normally read a book like this, maybe that'll help it find an audience outside the target demographic.

Also, because it amuses me (at least, in my current, half-awake state of mind), once I expand the story into a full novel, I totally should cherry-pick the last half-sentence and put it on the cover: "I might make my husband read it!"

And now I should hit the sack before I fall asleep right here at my desk.  :P

Man...it never fails.  Inspiration to write hits me just after midnight.  I JUST finished writing a few chapters.  Ah well, I suppose I should be glad that the inspiration comes at all.  Moreover, I found some more music to add to my "in the zone" mix (ie: music which helps me stay in the groove whenever I am writing).  Incidentally, it's all remixes of two particular Mass Effect songs (Callista - the song from Afterlife, and New Worlds - the Galaxy Map song).  It's basically an hour long mix of various versions of those tracks, alternating back and forth so I don't get tired of them.

Sometimes, when I am in the appropriate mood, I go to other songs, but it's all basically the sort of music you'd hear in Blade Runner or something, haha!  Anyhoo, I better get some sleep, or I won't be able to wake up in the morning proper.  Hope everyone is doing well!!!

EDIT:  Jeez, if you hop over to the "Fanfic" Thread, I own all the recent comments.  It looks like the "Seracen Show," HAHA!  I guess some threads are just more active than others...ah well...
