Well...Chapter twenty-two is up and cue the gastrointestinal lepidopterans  :?

As for the age-categories I suspect it depends on where you have it posted as well.  My last effort (Illium Heart-Ache  <_< - I suck at titles) got posted on ff.net and AO3 - there's a lot more viewings on the former.

Oh and thank you for explaining the icons (although I'm kind of irritated about the lack of ME, but still...

Congrats!  I'll have to give that a read!  If it conforms to the quality of writing up until now, you have nothing to be concerned about!  As for Ao3, while I find the website immensely useful, I don't really refer to it for reviews or traffic.  I agree, such occurrences seem low.  For me, it's just another outlet for exposure, and the search engine is a lot more robust (for finding a particular type of story) than one usually sees.

Yea, while 'kudos' is fairly common on AO3, actual commentary is not.  The 'kudos' system is a double-edge sword anyway; far easier for someone to just hit a 'like' type button than type words, but less useful for the writer.  It could easily go that a story receives tons of kudos for one aspect of the tale, but the writer continues down a different vein to what people actually liked, for e.g. dropping comedic elements for more drama, when it was the former that people actually liked.  TBH though, rarely do I ever get a comment that breaks it down for me in any way such as 'I liked this, but not that'.

And in an unrelated note, is it just me who only recently noticed the anagram of Ayn Rand in Andrew Ryan...?  Was blogging about the darker aspects of the Ryan/Rand society when it dawned on me.

Hah, yeah, the Atlas Shrugged iconography and parallels are strong in Bioshock, to say the least.  I recall the Ayn Rand parallel, but had forgotten about it.  Personally, I was just perturbed with Ken Levine, and several of his opinions and attitudes on a variety of matters (which I won't discuss here, or I'll be on my soapbox again).

It's part of why I tend to ignore the personal lives of the artists I enjoy; but sometimes it isn't possible to remain ignorant.  Conversely, the opportunity to directly speak to the artist (whether authors at ff.net or artists at deviantart) is a unique and intriguing opportunity, in my opinion.  I wish I read more fanfiction, as opposed to spending my time writing it, but engaging in the odd bit of conversation (not least in this thread) is always satisfying!

Grats, X.

Saw a short vid by someone from Merriam-Webster Dictionaries talking about 'ending a sentence with a preposition'.  So the tale goes, a chap in the distant past in some essays berated the previous generations (including Shakespeare) for ending in prepositions, on the basis that it doesn't happen in Latin, considered at the time a model for language and later adopted into texts about English and grammar.  So the general rule of thumb, so the Merriam-Webster people say, is that while yes one should strive, sometimes it works better to ignore the 'unofficial rule'.

"Give them what they asked for"  VS "Give them the thing for which they asked."  Hmmmmmm.   :)

Best of luck!  I know what it's like to work on something for so long, lol!  It feels like you'll never finish.  But after 90 chapters, I'm sure you can do it!  You'd better, b/c I look forward to reading it!  :D

Perversely :P  I also started a DAI fanfic ( female noble inquisitor origins) but I figure I'll have to try to keep it simple due to the huge amount of lore in DA. Simple because unlike the ME fanfic, the protagonist isn't going to be zipping around everywhere in the galaxy.

Anyways, chap 90 just went up. You'll laugh if you ever get around to reading it. You'll probably get confused / bored / ready to throw coconuts. :)

I've felt uneasy about sharing, but it's time: https://www.fanficti.../1/Nex-Effect-I

It's set post-ME3, and yes, Green ending was chosen.

You need not read from start to finish. Just Chapter 1 to get a feel for the story -- mayyybe the last 1/4 of Chapter 13 -- and Chapter 14 where the situation is summarized and the main plot all but resolved (massive chapter, though). And then the last two chapters have some fun stuff, easy reading.

I feel like I improved with the writing as the story went on. I still need some work, though.

Gave it a look, and it was a pleasant surprise!  Alas, I can't give it a proper read-through yet (read the 1st chapter, and skimmed a few others), but I liked what I saw, and left some comments for you there.  You should be more proud and certain of your work, because it's well-crafted stuff!

Yeah, I saw your review -- thank you!!

I'd respond to some of your points here, though, and not in the reviews section if you don't mind.

--> I worked with the idea that all organics have about the same level of Harmonic power. Basically, only a fraction of the human brain is really used at a time (about 10%), and Harmonics draws from the reserve. In truth, I did kind of mangle the details a little bit as the story goes on. In a future iteration I will try to get it all straight right off the bat, and then just run with it.

You bring up an interesting thing to consider, though. What if we had someone like "Lucy" -- from that movie last summer -- with an unprecedented amount of brainpower to commit to this ability? That could make for an interesting piece!

--> re: Kaidan/Miranda... yup, I also continued Joker/EDI a bit, and there are actually two more original 'ships in this piece. Those being...

Spoiler

--> re: Shepard... as I said in another thread today, Shepard's legend can only go down from conquering the Reaper threat, I do truly feel his story is over and it best to retire him. Time now for his former teammates to step out of his shadow and realize their own greatness. In truth, I am not sure many folks would really like the character that was my Shepard -- he was a bit... eccentric. I mean, he chose Synthesis, that alone should tell you how much of an oddball he was.

I'm glad you like the cast, though. These characters were ones whose story I wanted to explore a bit more, and so I did with this piece.

As for AI!Shep... I left it to the reader to decide whether the being that identifies itself as Shepard is him resurrected, or just some really convincing imitation therein. All that said, I eventually abandoned this development altogether. It was weird, even for Synthesis, and again, Shepard's story is over IMO.

forgive me for venting here but this is the sort of thing I can't vent about on Facebook or Twitter because I'm basically venting about everyone I know and the last thing I need right now is more drama...

*deep breath* why do I have to live in such a drama queen generation??? seriously! a friend posts a status update on FB, another friend replies (insensitively), and bam! drama! like.... an insane amount of drama for such a silly issue! and for the past week it is all anyone I know will talk about! it is driving me crazy. I've been in a frenzy working on final papers and studying for my finals (which start this coming Tuesday) and here I am dealing with drama between my squad, and I really really really kind of want to smack the resting bytch face off of all of them! I swear if I crack and lose my s**t because I'm already stressed and one of my friends made an insensitive crack about another friend's weight I'm gonna murder ALL of these bitches...

*slow exhale* Okay. I feel a little better now.

on a slightly brighter note, before the drama explosion, I did manage to write like 22k words in three days. nothing since, but it was really nice to actually do some writing for fun for a change. yet another reason to be annoyed over the drama.

seriously. drama. I can't.

I haven't been on FB for over a year.  2-3 for Twitter.  Honestly, I prefer hanging out with the friends I made here on BSN.  They're the best friends I've ever had and the only regret I have regarding them is the fact that we all live so far away from each other and can't meet up irl.

Ok, sry, not helping.

I'd suggest giving FB and Twitter a break for a while until everything calms down between them.  If they decide not to be friends with you anymore because of that, then maybe they weren't really your friends in the first place.

And don't worry about venting on here.   :)  We all need to vent from time to time so that we don't go insane.

*shakes head* sadly stepping away from my social media won't solve the problem. the people I'm talking about are like... my real-life squad. they all have my phone number and so it's not just social media, it's texts and in-person drama too. I'm not even directly involved in the whole mess. I'm just friends with everyone and trying to do damage control without choosing sides. *sigh* I'm almost 22! I thought this kind of petty bs was supposed to stop after high school.

Well, really, not many people fully grow out of that stage in this day and age.

As for your friends.... well, depending on what exactly happened, you could say that it is kind of ridiculous that the arguing between everyone has gone on for so long.  I tend to be a mediator when my friends get into arguments too, but at some point you have to put your foot down and tell them to stop arguing, especially when it gets to the point where said argument has gone on for days/weeks.

But then, that's just my view on the situation.  I obviously don't know anything else about it than your side, so maybe I'm not the best person to take advice from atm.

I just appreciate the indulgence of my ranting in this thread even though it was mostly off-topic. *smiles* I wasn't really looking for advice. there's not much to be done other than wait for the bitchfest to blow over and do my best not to get distracted too much by it. I have one more paper to finish before Friday and then a weekend of studying for my finals. if I have to murder some bitches for the good of my GPA I will totes do it!

Hey no worries gang.  This is a "support" thread for a reason!

Know what you mean about drama though.  There's a reason why I haven't done FB until recently.  Even then, there are some "friends" who try my patience, and I really have to just bite my tongue almost every other day.  It sucks when you are one of the few reliable people in the group, so I understand the frustration there.  Speaking from experience, it never ends.  Every time you get to "the next level," you figure people are passed it.  But it never happens.  My sister is a program director at a freaking hospital, and the drama and politics that go on there would put anyone in tears!  I'm part of the youth Officer's group of a community non-profit organization, and the crap I have to deal with (backbiting, watercooler gossip) from GROWN ADULTS WITH CHILDREN is just freaking unreal.  I think it's beyond mankind's ability to ever stop this sort of behavior, it just expresses itself differently.

That's partly why I love writing so much, and why I love talking about it with the group!  I hope you manage to get through your finals intact, and congrats on the writing!  I look forward to reading it some day!  :)

Oh, while I'm at it...for anyone who has a Deviant Art Account...

Is anyone familiar with the DA group called "3DShe-YouTube?"  I've gotten some requests by them to feature my work, but I've never heard of the group before, and am unsure what inclusion in the group would entail...

Can't say I've heard of them myself, Seracen, but from the brief look around their stuff, it at least seems legit.

And a new avatar for Yuri, I see, but I have no idea who that is... hope the 'biches' (thank you, Jack) fest ends for you soon, that kind of drama blows.

I'm surprise, to tangent a little, that such young people still use FB.  I thought 'the yoof' were moving away from it as that's where your parents, grandparents, et al do their social media.

On the writing front, I'm still mainly in Rapture, exploring a few 'what ifs', like how do the Little Sisters cope in their return to 'normal society', when humanity surfaces in Splicers, Eleanor visiting Sally (both former Little Sisters), and the emotional baggage that goes with all that.  Poke, prod.   :crying:

*grins* as depressing a fact as it is, I don't think I fall into the category of "yoof" anymore. *smh* I'm not even 22, and I already find my younger sisters criticizing me for using terms that aren't in anymore. and you're right about Facebook. it's not the primary social media for anyone I know, but a lot of my friends still use it on occasion, because it's where our parents do all their social media stuff... that way our parents see the tamest and safest stuff we're doing and feel included, but remain unaware of anything we haven't approved them to see. *grins* but WAY more of my time is spent on other social media platforms, or just texting and snapchatting back and forth with friends.

and now, a descriptive question... without any specifics because I can't describe what I'm envisioning or even explain how to describe it. but have you ever had a simple little vision or mannerism in your head and couldn't even begin to think of a way to describe it in words (and hence gave up on including it?)

Ugh, I labour over this kind of thing with mannerisms a lot.  You don't want the description to take up the whole body of the sentence but trying to capture it concisely can be hard.  I find a well placed adjective and accompanying dialogue usually indicates enough. 'querying brow', 'pondering hand', 'defensive stance', etc.

Edit: because it popped into my head 'impatient two-step'.  :D

do you know that thing some people do when something is tasty and they want to make a show of it? where you like... click your tongue like you're enjoying the taste? I wanted to have a girl mocking another girl because she stole something from her food, but I couldn't come up with a way to describe it that I was sure every reader would get.

another question! this one Mass Effect related! twenty years after the end of ME3, do you think it's reasonable that holographic communication tech would have advanced to the point where it's portable and accessible to the common person? because in the games they only use it in rooms with the projectors, but it seems like the sort of thing that communications companies would really work to advance. but is it feasible in 20 years? like for the average omnitool (wll, maybe not average) to include a holographic projector and scanner program?

'Smacking their lips' is a common term for that, but you can add the exaggeration and facetiousness to your own 'taste', no pun intended... (I'll get my coat).

I don't think it's too far removed from possibility; control or synthesise endings are most likely to bring swift advances, but maybe not quite as likely with destroy for obvious reasons, unless there's other priorities to consider.

Edit: Ah, is that the girl from 'Revenge'?  In reference to your current social situation?

"Smacked her lips" or "moaned with delight" (though the 2nd one is sorta dirty sounding, lol). :bandit:

Yeah, I could see omnitools being the new cellphone.  Obviously, you'd still have some people who didn't have it (whether due to poverty or personal reasons).  Also, the military grade stuff would obviously not be available to the masses.
