Have at it. An extra pair of eyes is always appreciated, and you certainly know your stuff.

rofl, I wouldn't go that far... it's all :wizard: drivel from my fingers. I really like what I'm seeing so far, but I'll leave the rest of my comments for FFN :)

Thanks for taking the time to read it! Nice to know I have avoided that particular writing trap.

And I notice you're a fellow Brit. Hooray!

It's a pleasure - your writing is quite captivating.

And I do live in England, replete in its rainy splendour, but I'm actually Singaporean ;)

Thank you! No idea how I make it so... :? Apologies if I'm keeping you up!

Oh, really? Well, if you're talking about the weather you're British enough to me. :P

Has this thread always been in this section, because if so I hate that I've missed it. Maybe with everyone's help I'll finally finish my ME stories I've been working on.

edit: lol, Nevermind I'm the one in a different section. But I'll still most likely call on everyone for input

I think I may have a resource for some writers here. Not anything visual (well, it is but that's not the part I am referring too) but some audial stimulation to help some of those people, like myself, who write better while listening to music.

Essentially, a project I have is to take a screenshot for every second of a playthrough of Mass 1, 2 and (eventually, after all DLC releases) 3. I then stitch them together at 30 frames per second to make a 'stop-motion' like video.
Now, no audio is recorded, so in order to add some other form of sensory input from the media, what I've done is extract audio from the games themselves and put them into the videos.
What you end up with is ~1 hour long "mixtapes" of Mass Effect soundtrack, some of which is relatively unheard of.

So for those of you who want a long track of ME music to help your write or be inspired, click the links below, minimize the player and listen to the audio (after the short into of course).

Here's the video for ME1 - Contains a lot of atmospheric and almost 'creepy' music, including a version of Vigil that lasts at least 4 minutes long made from all the different (and awesome) versions that were in the game files but not on the OST disk. It also has some unreleased audio that some might recognize from Mass Effect: Galaxy.

Here is the video for ME2 - This one has primarily ME2 music, but contains some from ME1 and from some of the cut songs from ME3. Also includes an audio cookie at 01:04:00. This one is much more action oriented as the soundtrack to ME2 seemed to be rather 'actiony' as well.

I hope this helps some of you.

That's one thing I'm kind of curious about.

Do any of you need music to write? Or simply listen to music while writing just because you can(and because music is awesome)? If so, what kind? What musicians? Any weird quirks or habits when you're listening to music and writing?

I'd say about a third of the time I'm typing in solence, but the other two thirds I'm listening to music. I've got different writing playlists set up because I find it hard to write a happy scene when something full of dread like The Dead Flag Blues comes on. Much like I couldn't write a depressing scene if the Beach Boys were playing :P Music totally affects my mood and I need to my synchronized, I guess.

I generally can't write to songs with vocals that are pushed to the front of the mix...too hard to hear myself think.  I generally listen to more ambient or instrumental stuff like Eluvium, Explosions in the Sky, Max Richter, Deaf Center, and the oh so wonderful Clint Mansell when I'm writing so I can talk aimlessly about what I'm doing or thinking without getting interrupted. Sometimes I dip into jazz or 'classical' too, when I get that kind of feel for a scene. Not often, though. Not yet, at least.

And as an aside, one thing that confuses me about Shepard's past is her involvement in the Skyllian Blitz. Joker basically states Shep had some inolvement in the Blitz after the ME3 Thessia mission(makes remarks about her biometrics or whatnot).
Now, that's stated in the gane, but none of the characterrs I've run through ME3 were "War hero" templates, who were active in the Blitz.

Does this mean that no matter what, Shepard was on Elysium, and perhaps just wasn't the "Hero"?

Yep. I listen to music all the time. It depends on what mood I'm in really.

Sometimes, I like to listen to the most popular music at the time on MTV, because it helps wipe my mind of thought :) I tried listening to more appropriate mood music for the specific scene I'm writing, but I find it just distracts me. Mindless pop songs, it is!

I don't remember getting that remark about Elysium from Joker, and I was a War Hero, dammit! What's the exact line?

Link

"Because EDI says that according to your armor's metabolic scans, you're under more stress now than during the Skyllian Blitz"

Of course, I hear if you choose the War Hero template, he follows it up with a remark about Elysium and a bunch of batarians, which is basically him repeating himself....

But yeah. It seems all Sheps take part in the Blitz. Some just don't get the accolades for it. However, it would technically be a good bit of padding alongside the Akuze/Torfan events in terms of getting Shep into N7.

There's generally not a lot of info on the Blitz itself, so it's possible that maybe Shepard had been on Elysium along with other recruits to blow off steam.  Or maybe, s/he wasn't in the ground forces when it occured. The codex does also mention that Alliance ships were fighting off the batarian ones above Elysium, so maybe Shepard had been one of those ships instead, like Pressley, if s/he is not a War Hero.

As for what I sometimes listen to while writing my chapters...

I either listen to Nujabes or Katatonia. Two different moods.

Or simply Bioware writers were too lazy to come up with three different dialogs. ;)

I’m too lazy to come up with appropriate mixes for various moods and situations. I probably should.

NP: Metric’s “Fantasies”. Next up either “TRON Remixed” or some Dinosaur Jr.…

I listen to music while I write, but it can't be too...involved.

As in, it must be stuff I've heard loads of times so there's some familiarity rather than trying to catch a hook or figure out how a part was played (old musician force of habit), and not too complex or odd. I am easily distracted.

Generally, I find myself going back to Snow Patrol or Idlewild over stuff like Frank Black or Rx Bandits (I find myself trying to drum along to the latter).

Or there's nice ambience like this. :P If only there were a longer version of the Normandy one...

Also, that's amazing work, Spartanburger. Love it! (Though your link for ME2 still leads to the ME1 video)

Idlewild

<3<3 Way too few people listen to Idlewild. I went with Dinosaur Jr. but might queue “100 Broken Windows” up next.

Spartanburger’s vids are nice, too, have to DL them so that Flash doesn’t make my Air want to actually take to the air…

You know what would be a totally useful FFN feature? When there’s a story alert/fave, if it also recorded the last chapter the person had read previously.

Given some of the other crap in ME3, I'd say that would be the answer.

I just wasted to stop by and tell you all that femshep.com is holding a fan fiction contest. Mass Effect Incarceration. Details the events of Shepard's life while under house arrest. There will be prizes and is open for both female and male Shepards.

More details at http://femshep.ning....s/incarceration

It would be a nice option, yes. What I do is I use Calibre and download the fics as EPUBs with the FanFictionDownLoader plugin. Calibre's standard EPUB reader remembers where I am in the file and the FanFictionDownLoader plugin doesn't override this bookmark when it downloads new chapters.

No, I think all Shepards played a part in the Blitz. Having played through ME 3 three times with three different characters, I can say that if the scene you're talking about is the one I'm thinking of, Joker says something about Shepard being under more stress than during the Blitz, and then adds a line that varies depending on your service history, whether it be referencing Elysium, Akuze or Torfan.

As for music, yes, I queue up my entire playlist of MP3s and just let it play. Mostly classic rock (Pink Floyd, Led Zepplin, Black Sabbath/Ozzy Ozbourne, Aerosmith, AC-DC, Bob Dylan, etc.), and 80's hair bands (Poison, Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, Cinderella, Ratt, etc.) some stuff that's a little less old (Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Live, REM, etc... can I just note that I'm suddenly feeling old here, since I was going to call this "newer" stuff and it's all from the late 80's and the 90's... Posted Image), plus a few oddballs in my collection such as anime music from Bubblegum Crisis or Key the Metal Idol, or instrumental stuff such as the Last of the Mohicans soundtrack.

I just let my whole library play what it wants. Distraction is less of a problem to me than most people though. Because I am very used to blocking out both of my daughter's music such as Beyonce and Justin Bieber and whatnot (not a fan, no offense to those who are), and the techno/dance stuff, whatever you'd call it, from my daughter's Dance Central game.

And now a question for FF.net publishers:

Am I going to need a special program to publish my stories there once I get enough written to start putting it up for people to see? I am currently about 3/4 of the way through Chapter 2, but I'm not ready to put anything up yet because I keep going back to chapter one to make little fixes, or I move a scene forward a bit because I want to add something beforehand, etc...

But it occurred to me that I know absolutely nothing about html and the like, so if I need to convert it or get a special program to publish it, I may be wasting time. I've been just writing my story in MS Word, like I usually do, on the assumption I could just cut & paste the story to get it up there. Now I wonder if it won't be quite so simple.

All you need is your file on your computer, preferably a .doc or .docx file. THen you upload it, and then you make whatever minor edits you feel necessary, if any at all.

Then you publish it. Real easy. No HTML required.

Nope, just a word doc for each chapter and upload - it's really pretty simple :)

edit: oh snap, fluffy got there first :)
