If we start giving out a Reviewer of the Month prize, Caligno’s apparently a strong frontrunner

As for a prize, I have…umm, a stick of glue? Genuine Pritt Glue. Edit: or some hiking straps. Nylon, stainless steel grips.

I'm thinking on giving a post ME3 Fan Fiction another shot, so I'm just working on a bit of post Crucible Timeline.

What's everybody's stance here on original content? This has always been a problem with me, figuring just how to incorporate something new that fits into the universe. I've posted a number of Fics with original content.

At one point, I had a try to envision how the Raloi look like and their culture would function while using the already established canon that they have an Avian appearance. I came up with a few things that would set them apart from the already present Avian like species; the Turians, mainly I thought they could actually have the ability to fly.

Who else has put in some original content and would have some tips to give?

Need to call on you wonderful people once again.

First thing is a simple one. Has Kai Leng always carried a sword? I'm guessing he did because no way would you deliberately include a guy with a sword in your shooty game unless it had been written that way before...

Second one is something for you thinkers (or at least someone with more knowledge on salarians). How would salarian alcohol work? I know Padok mentions getting drunk and fighting with Mordin. Not sure if they just drank a lot, or if fast metabolisms was a factor there. Would salarian drinks be deliberately weaker given their attributes?

Hmm I haven't really read the novels, so can't comment on KL. But swords and ridiculously stereotypical Asain kungfu badass space ninjas are in no way too videogamey, so kudos to BW for including them! :wizard:

Assuming Salarian alcohol is ethanol-based and enzymatic pathways are broadly similar...

Fast metabolisms would generally imply faster degradation of alcohol. Consequently Salarian liquor would either need to be a lot more potent, or the period of drunkeness just doesn't last very long.

Maybe they just drink pints of Ouzo neat (urgh, that drink is horrible... had a shot of that forced on me yesterady and just... eurgh. Can imagine lizard people liking it, though ;))

I don't think there's anything wrong with filling in the blanks that Bioware left us (The Raloi you mention is a perfect example of something I would like seeing fleshed out). I think that so long as the original content is well thought out, potentially interesting, and not absolutely overwhelming...it will generally be accepted. A lot of people do AU stuff, or expand on lore where there are far too many blanks. So long as it's well thought out and well written, it's often accepted readily, or at worst is dismissed by someone who has already made up their own headcanon on that subject.

Nothing wrong with original content. I especially love reading up on people's ideas of different species' culture (I have a slight thing for the Asari and Hanar in that respect, as I find there's so much room to expand on it).

So I say, go for it.
Outside of that, I can't really give any advice. I'm only on my first fic, and it currently takes place on earth right now, so....I can't really say.  But good luck!

1. Unsure. I would assume so, but the fact that he was equipped with Phantom-style implants by Cerberus after his incidents with Anderson...makes me believe it's possible he didn't have a sword before(considering they used biotics and civilians in the Phantom program, it is possible he wasn't trained in the use of the sword beforehand, though given the stereotypical heritage, I would assume he did because Bioware seems the kind to do that).

2. I'm not sure metabolism has much to do with one's ability to handle alcohol(I'm no expert, I don't drink). Perhaps in avoiding hangovers, yeah, but I'm not sure it has any effect on the 'getting drunk' process. I have a lot of friends with good metabolisms and their swiftness in getting drunk has more to dow ith the type of drink and their weight, from what I can tell. Salarians are thin and weigh very little, so I would imagine they would get drunk quickly on human acoholic beverages. It would make sense that theirs were diluted a fair bit (not that they would only drink salarian booze, but I'm just noting on booze made for salarians).

As far as i remember from the books (I have the three that were written by the sane writer), no, Kai Leng does not have a sword until ME3. In fact, i seem to recall him being more of a brutal, hand-to-hand kind of guy (at one point he does slit some throats), rather than a weapony kind of guy. He has N7 training, and he was thrown out of the Alliance for killing a krogan with a knife. Doesn't strike me as a graceful, martial arts and swords kind of guy, more of a brawler. Also, he started off half-slavic (I think, the details get a little hazy when you lose so many brain cells to recent events) to represent the merging of different cultures on Earrth. TL:DR; The Kai Leng from the good books is totally different to the anime wannabe we were given in the game.

As for liquor, I agree with nox that it would have to be really potent, or the effects wear off very quickly. I can picture Padok and Mordin having a fight then being all pally and stuff a mere five minutes later.

Checking Leng, sec…  I’m pretty sure he has a blade in the attack on Grissom, at least.

Checking…40%…60%…100%

Match found: knife, Retribution. That’s it, and it’s his backup weapon for the most part.

Edit: this is why I absolutely  ebooks.

Fluffy is right - I assumed by "high metabolic rate" = higher cellular turnover (hence their shorter lifespans) = more enzymes (though not necessarily working at a higher rate). Ethanol breakdown by alcohol dehydrogenase enzymes in the liver "relieves" drunkeness.

I’m sure I have put in some original content (to the point of defining three basic grammars for asari languages, plus my Asari Physiology Intro which is actually published)…my only guideline is to not contradict anything that’s been established, with exceptions for things that must be retconned — those after serious deliberation, of course.

So, I guess I don’t have any concrete advice except to not worry about it. The amount of fleshing out you need to do depends on how big a role the content plays. In the case of the raloi in particular, I think you need (well, should) do a fair amount of cursory world-building because unless you deviate from lore, you actually have to go to their homeworld to meet any since they blew up all their space-capable stuff.

Okay, this is completely off-topic but the search function, looking through browser history and looking through this entire subforum has yielded nothing, and I don't want to make a new thread just for this lol. There's a thread somewhere where people extracted sound clips from the game and posted download links to them. Could anyone send me a link to that thread? I can't find it for the life of me.

Where exactly was your Asari Physiology primer? As I believe I mentioned elsewhere, I think you do an excellent job of weaving your details into the ME universe Bioware has given us. I half-expect to find them in my codex when I play the game.

Thanks for the help once again, guys!

Interesting that Kai Leng suddenly started using a sword. Something to consider for my story...
I probably should read the 'good' books someday, though I recall being a little underwhelmed with Revelations at the time.

On the salarian thing. Yeah, I'm not too scientifically-minded (embarrassingly so) which is why I came here. And even if there were no sound scientific basis, a few people in this thread have a talent for reasoning these things out rather well (as evidenced). I guess I'm going for salarians may become drunk quickly but won't feel the effects for too long.

Cheers!

http://www.fanfictio...sari_for_Humans! I’ve actually written some new material that I need to clean up and add there…currently it’s mostly about the…interesting parts ^_^ although there are some general physiology notes too.

(Clinical, but probably NSFW if you’re west of the meridian. Also intended to be used as a resource, so go for it if you like it.)

The issue with making BJJ the martial art of choice is that most of its moves are wrestling. It's closer to Judo than Karate.

If you really want to be obscure, Chun Kuk Do is the style Chuck Norris developed (it's a hybrid and borrows from a lot of different martial arts incuding BJJ). Kuk Sul Won is a Korean style.

I made Meghan Shepard as a martial artist since as a Vanguard, I figured she'd have to know a bit more about how to kick someone's ass close up than most other classes. I gave her a second degree black belt in an unnamed style and said she'd also studied others. Since, in my experience, most martial artists don't stop at just one style.

Things to consider - especially because given that minor revelation I just had re: some Mary Sueness, I think it's time to go and fix up a few things (grammar mostly but also others). As I said, Tess got stuck in martial arts because of her temper, so it would make more sense to stick with one that has sort of a discipline/do not be the first to attack vibe.

The phrase "writing is rewriting" has come up in here, so question: How do you feel about re-writes being put in to already published works? Do you do it yourself? Would you consider doing it and if so, why?

Uh.  Well... I don't consider my fics worth the time.  They're diversions.  A way to exercise the plot bunnies while I'm staying primed for the novels I'm working on for sale.  I don't take time out for extensive revisions after publication on ff.net or AO3.  Believe me, A Paragon of Virtue could use an overhaul.  But do I want to take time out of the stuff I'm writing to get paid for to improve something I work on for a hobby?  Not really.

Not that it's wrong to do, I just don't have time.

As I haven't yet read the fic in question I can't comment on the first part other than to say that a defensive art would make sense if it was taken up to curb temper issues.

But as to the second. I'm not sure of the pubic opinion of rewrites on aready-published material, which is why I plan to hold back on publishing my first fic until I have several chapters written and am fairly sure I won't need to make changes... I'm giving myself a four-chapter buffer. However, having said that, if I get to a point where I've already published several chapters and I notice something horribly out of place in one of them that really needs to be rewritten, I would definitely do so. And probably include an author's note in the next chapter I published to let people know I'd done a little rewriting and what had changed, just in case there were readers who'd passed what I rewrote but were still following the story as I posted new material.

Just my thoughts on the matter there. I could understand how that would be a little trying for readers if they'd already read chapters you change, but if it helps the overall story for future readers, it may be worth it. Depends how you feel about the balance between possibly confusing current readers vs. making the story more enjoyable or less confusing (or both) for future readers.

I think there’s a brief copyediting discussion initiated by yours maybely somewhere in the earlier pages.

I definitely copyedit constantly…in contrast I think I’ve only made a single actual story change in “Unity” (used wrong person of two in the same room). I make the first version good — it’s not unfinished in that sense — and then go back with fresh eyes later and fix things in the writing itself. Mostly it’s text flow, getting rid of commas, rearranging sentences, that sort of thing.

Edit: I should be writing but I woke up at…like, late o’clock, and feel like I’m only in my morning routines -.-

Edit2: I swear I’m not intentionally re-editing this post…it’s just what I do. Basically my eyes need to see the finished page, in the published form, before I can really see the text.
