Haha, I would *definitely* not recommend baking at 45°C. And, I'm pleasantly surprised you use °C in Canada! I hate °F... silliest unit ever.

And grrr I'm having similar problems to you. Need to finish this darned chapter and do something productive... else there'll be hell to pay.

I dunno if someone else did, but I wanted some input on Ch. 21, Drussius kindly obliged already, but I won’t turn down more :) I was mainly concerned about whether it read choppy…found a couple passages that will be fixed in a copyedit When I Have Time™.

Sure, I'll take a look at it. Anything in particular I should know beforehand? Not sure if my attention span will allow me to read through the first 20.

Chapter 20 by itself might give a little context to it. There‘s a fair amount of plot setup in the previous chapters, but I’m reasonably satisfied with how that half of the equation developing…It’s mainly the text itself in 21, so if you have notes on that, it’d be great.

A more in-depth look into the plot elements, themes, characterization consistency and so on — while definitely most appreciated — would mean reading the whole shebang, in my opinion ^_^

Canada is strange. My generation grew up with teachers still used to Imperial, so a lot of the measurements I got taught initially were Imperial. I still use lbs and inches/feet when measuring myself...I don't know my weight in kg or my height in cm.
Outside of those two, in that specific scenario, I use metric. Just makes more sense. Miles and yards don't make any sense...mm->cm->m->km makes much more sense and scales easily.  Celsius also makes more sense to me than Fahrenheit. Though I do laugh when American tv stations broadcast Canadian weather in Celsius and American in Fahrenheit...it's wonderful to imagine tourists coming north of the border expecting to hit the slopes in early June :P

I've been sitting at about 3500 words since last night and I only have a single scene left(though it'll be long, I'm sure)...but I just can't feel my way to a good starting point. I had written the scene before, and scrapped it because it made no sense...and then came up with a more reasonable way to go about it...but now that I'm here, ready to write again, I can't.  My deadline is today, and I know I need to get it done...ugh.

Maybe I'll take a cold shower and brave the elements for some ice cream. That might do the trick ^_^

I know my height in cm because of my driver's liscense. Usually refer to myself in feet and inches though. I don't actually know what I weigh in any system of measurement.

I think fluffy and I are in the same part of Canada. We have two seasons. There is summer which starts in May and ends in September - hot, humid and where I am at least, little to no wind to speak of. Then there is winter which starts in October/November and ends in March - freezing cold, ice, snow and always wind! Or as we usually say: we have two seasons - winter and construction.

And on that note: The metric system will be the measurement system of choice in the ME universe (at least for humanity). Discuss.

Yeah, I grew up with metric, but had to learn how to convert to different units because a lot of patients still use the imperial system. As a *rough* framework, 180cm is approx 5'11 and 160 is approx 5'3 and kg is approx 2lbs (well.. 2.2 but no one ever bothers being exact). And then you get people who use "stone" and "pints" and "gallons" :crying:

Also... Whey! New chapter! I'll be sure to hop on it tomorrow... 'cos it will be up be then, right? ;)

If metric (or something equally sensible) isn't Earth-standard by 2183, I'll turn in my grave

Haha, yeah, pretty much. I think we both live in or around the Ottawa area/eastern Ontario(or south western Quebec). I kind of miss the wind sometimes...I'd kill for a decent breeze today. Of course, in winter, I'd kill for the wind to die off for even just an hour or two sometimes.
I do miss spring and autumn...it's not often that they actually occur. We had a small one this past year, at least.
As for construction...well, it hogged up all my winter, at least. The Point Heron bridge just would not stay open, at least where the stairwells were concerned. I'm pretty sure they're still down for construction. It's madness.

I agree, metric will be the dominant measurement system for humanity in ME, I figure. Those Imperial scum shall know no mercy. :innocent:

Those terms scare me. I cannot fathom what a stone represents. I just imagine someone trying to find the perfect stone to use as a foundation for measurement, and settling on this large, rugged, unwieldly boulder.

Gallons and pints don't make much sense either. I mean, bodies are kinda full of water(in some form or another) I guess, but I'm pretty sure that bones would mess up that whole liquid measurement standard bit.

And...uh...I hope it's done by tonight. As in tonight, eastern standard time. Like, perhaps midnight. Or a bit later...three-ish?. I'm going to give it my best shot! :?

Pints are for beer. And nothing else. If only because saying "I'll have a pint" sounds so much nicer than "I'll have a half-litre."

Edit: Also pretty sure that a stone is 14lbs. Baffled as to why anyone would measure anything in increments of 14.

I'm doing my best to use metric wherever measurements and weights come in, because I figure eventually the world will settle on that. But with that said, us silly, backward, imperial-using americans typically know next to nothing in metric. I couldn't for the life of me even GUESS at what 35ºC would be in F... So every single time I mention a measurement in my writing I do it in feet and inches, Fahrenheit or pounds, then I groan, grumble, and boot up my desktop so I can find an online conversion calculator and figure out what I'm supposed to put (I do my writing on my laptop, which never has been and never will be connected to the internet! That's how I roll!) I should have been taught this metric stuff starting from kindergarden, darnit! I'm too old to learn new things now!

^ Meh, even if you use feet or inches, some of us will still understand. Although if you start in on gallons and quarts and pints, I probably will be a little lost. The metric system is easy and friendly. 10 millimeters = 1 centimeters. 100 centimeters = 1 meter. 1000 meters = 1 kilometer. 1000 kilometers = 621.36994949 miles US. See? Easy ;)

I'm in Vancouver, BC, where we have a bit of everything season-wise except heavy snowfall for winter. Summer peaks at 34 degrees Celsius and winter bottoms out at around -15. However, if we get five centimeters of snow (or two inches), the whole city freaks out and shuts down. It's not our proudest season.

lillitheris: I got about halfway through before I hit the character limit. I hope I didn't rip into it too hard, because what you have really wasn't as bad as my review might have given the impression of.

Also, there was around 6-7 paragraphs or so that I couldn't find any issues with, and it was in the first conversation. I can tell that one of your stronger points is dialogue.

EDIT: Wow, lucky. My high school never shut down until the windchill was -40 degrees, and I'm pretty sure it never shut down from snow height. South Dakota for the win? ._.?

Five centimeters you shut down? Wish I could live in your place. Here in Ukraine we had close to thirty cm (12 inches) last winter and I stil had to go to work. On foot.

Well, I'm exaggerating. It's actually closer to ten centimeters of snow, and the city spazzes out. Our trains slow down if they don't stop outright, bus times automatically doubles, main streets are backed up for blocks, hills suddenly become unclimbable, classes at universities are cancelled because the professors can't make it to work...

We're really an embarrassing sight when it snows compared to ANYONE east of us. As for Ukraine...I hope your work place was relatively close?

Well, I'll never complain about walking in the snow here again.

Getting back on the thread...when do you guys call it quits for editing a story and just submit it?

Generally when the desire to start writing the next chapter(or whatever) overtakes the desire to make sure I put out the best chapter possible.
Of course, that usually takes a fair bit of time, so by then my chapter's usually in alright shape.

After I finish a chapter, first I spell check for mistakes in Ms Word, then run the whole chapter through the Ginger spell checker. After that I reread the chapter 1 more time to see if I missed anything. Then I send it over to my beta readers (2). They usually correct my writing style because English is not my native language. They also give me advices on content. Once they've sent me back the reviewed version, I reread it once again and if I'm satisfied with the result then I submit the chapter.

It must be nice to have beta-readers! I occasionally send my finished works to my father or a few close friends to get their thoughts, but I could never bring myself to send along anything I didn't consider to be finished. And I certainly wouldn't do it with the fanfic I'm working on, given the fact that none of my friends or family know ANYTHING about Mass Effect. They'd be lost just for the simple lack of details on the various races and such (since I'm writing a fan fiction, I haven't felt the need to fill in details such as how Quarians have weak immune systems, or that the Asari are a mono-gendered race... Fans know these things. My dad and my friends would probably just think that I have a space suit/lesbian fetish or something.)

I'm essentially just planning to publish what I have when I'm happy with it, and hope that the criticisms aren't too harsh from anyone who happens to read it (but don't hold back if you DO read it. If my writing sucks I want to know why, so that I can improve in the future).

And on a side note... Insomnia sucks. Too tired to write anything because I can't think straight, not comfortable enough to actually sleep because of the heat and humidity, and my daughter will be waking up (and inevitably waking ME up) in just a few hours. At this point I'm going to lie down again and hope that I can get at least two hours of sleep before I have to get up again. And you're welcome for this wonderful glimpse into my life! I'm sure it's more than any of you needed or wanted to know :)

Think I'll just go with the until-I'm-sick-of-looking-at-it guideline. Thanks for input, y'all.

Edit: Were we sharing in-depth details about our lives? I may have missed the memo. Here's an unnecessary fact about me. I have friends who are English majors. I troll them sometimes with purposely bad grammar and syntax to watch them cringe. Makes me smile every time :)

Yes. I actually included a few of the basic rules (m, km, cm, kg, l, C) in my Glossary for the imperialist readers.
