Joking aside, I've told stories in one way or another for as long as I can remember.  Barbies were my original source material.  I didn't just play with their hair or give them babies.  My barbies were spies and astronauts, teachers and doctors, soldiers (really wished they made guns for Barbies, but they'd probably end up pink.  Just can't handle the thought of a pink M-16) and sailors.

You want more?

Made me chuckle :)

THIS IS AWESOME.  You just made my inner 8 year old squeal with joy.

I must give you an internet!

Anyway, related to reasons above, here's an open question: why do you write?

Hmm. A bit of a tricky one, actually.

A part of why I write is that I love storytelling in all of its forms. I think its an important part of our culture, and without it we'd lose a part of ourselves.

Another part is to prove something to myself. I don't have a good track record of seeing things through, often getting big ideas and then seeing them fall through halfway (i once started writing a trilogy of Star Wars books, but ended up stumbling to a halt eight months and one book into the trilogy), so I try to complete projects now to prove that I can. I've never been as determined to finish anything as I have been with ITU.

I write about Mass Effect because the first two games left me so inspired. I actually have ideas on original works I'd like to write, but after ME2 I had so many ideas crammed into my head that there was no room for original settings. i guess you could say I'm trying to clear some space for my own work.

Finally, I write for the people that read my story. I've never had an audience before for my creations (one friend read the aforementioned SW book, but that can't be expected to be an objective review), and I feel compelled to keep going, maintaining the quality of my work and improving on it. Even though Bioware have drained my enthusiasm for their version of events, I still feel the need to keep writing to do justice by my readers, and I feel bad when I fall behind.

Why do I write? Hmm well, depends I guess. I enjoy reading. I also enjoy writing. My dad knew how to play a little bit on a guitar, my older brother plays guitar like a madman. I tried to play guitar, but being the dumb@ss I am along with that I tend to go against the grain of things so I didn't do much guitar.

Instead I chose to write lyrics, crappy poetry, and stuff. Given I am a huge W.A.S.P. fan most my crappy lyrics tend to have a rather dark undertone but still have a deep meaning, even if it's completely open to interpretation. Granted I am no where near as good at writing as Blackie is.

I write because I just do I don't know. I'm also a perfectionist and so I take my sweet @ss time with my works. Also tend to get blocked up, but that's become less of a problem lately. I owe much of the unblocking and creative flow to a good friend of mine that for some unknown mysterious reasons seems to spark the flow of writing in me.

As for why I'm writing my Mass Effect fanfics because ME3 botched things pretty good, I spent so many hours invested in the series I'm gonna be damned if my Shep has to suffer such f*ckery at the last installment. I can give a better ending to that story and tell it with the characters I like, and love. Samara as a LI, she even got her own tie in series. Yep, Thane is also gonna get a better thing in Breaking Points, Ashley and Shep's friendship is gonna get taken care of and dealt with much better than it was in ME3.

So there are my reasons, also my reworking is coming along great, I really can't wait to post it up on Fanfic.net for you all. I'm thrilled with what it's coming out as. Also got a few new chapters stashed away to be polished and uploaded. Yeah it really helps when someone for whatever reasons seems to spark a flow of creativity in me. They know who they are.

Lots of good answers here! I suppose I'd better elaborate on mine.

I only really (re)discovered my passion for writing while I was studying at university. I was thinking about what work I wanted to do, and remembered how I was always fond of telling or creating stories (even if they were crap). And I remember teachers encouraging me to study English Language at a higher level (which I absolutely regret not doing now...).

Anyway, at uni, one of the tutors was really taken with a script I'd written and wanted it filmed well enough to enter a fairly big festival (though it was mostly laconic dialogue and a wry twist at the end). After my filming partner turned out to be a complete dick, the final product suffered, and I realised that I would be interested in being a screenwriter more than a director. Even if I'm not great, there is always a creative urge in me, since I used to draw (until a certain art course killed that enthusiasm) and play music (until life got in the way of band stuff).

At one point, a head guy at the BBC was taken with a sitcom script I'd written but there was no way to leverage a job out of "It's really good, and you have a unique voice, but we couldn't commission it." Plus, breaking into the industry is hard enough. And here I am, writing where I can.

So, yeah, I guess I write to entertain foremost. I'd like to be able to really focus stories around bigger ideas and themes but, unless you're really talented, that comes with maturity and practice, I think. Besides, your choice of material and way of writing will always be an expression of yourself in some ways.

Ah. After a few weeks of consideration I may have found a way for my story to work finally!

Spent so long tying myself up in knots and slowing progress that it feels great to almost have it in order. And it'll be fun sharing it and, hopefully, surprising a few people along the way. I always enjoy that the most.

...I really am dreadful with plotting and I do tend to 'eat' through a lot of it rather quickly.

Anyway, related to reasons above, here's an open question: why do you write?

Yay! Working out the bugs in a story and getting back on track...it's a really great feeling :)

As for why I write...because I feel it's necessary. I've never been the greatest writer, I have my fair share of terrible stories and whatnot, but it's a form of release for me. It isn't often that I need to, though.

I write campaign ideas that pop into my head, characters that I want to roleplay, and now with Mass Effect... stories about characters I've come to love. I write so that these characters, campaigns, and stories stay fresh in my mind. I write for myself first and foremost. Feedback is always appreciated and gives me the warm fuzzies, but in the end, I'm the primary motivating force. I wanted a memento to remind me of what I enjoyed about the series, of my time spent on it, and it helps keep those memories and emotions fresh. I'd write even if no one read it, but I'm really thankful that there are people who do. I like to think that my story may provide similar enjoyment to that which I feel when reading other fanfiction.

But yeah, tl;dr, I write because I want to remember.

I started writing because I had a story in my mind and I wanted to share it with others. I actually never had any experience in writing before. One day when I wasn't able to contain the story inside my head any longer I just came home, sat down and started writing.

This is about the same me, all the way down to non-native English :)

I’ve liked reading, and I’ve liked thinking about stories (there’s actually this one short story I’ve been meaning to write for years — maybe in second person!)…but I’ve mostly spent any creative energies on programming. I think my passion for problem-solving is probably visible in my writing.

The ending was soul-crushing enough that I couldn’t leave it at that. Started writing “Unity”, the first thing I’ve ever written. I like the result, and the writing process, but I wonder if I’ll have the impetus to go into writing about something else…I just loved these characters.

I’ve said it before, but I like the storytelling aspect. Yes, fundamentally it’s about me wanting to write but, be it narcissism or whatever, I also want others to ‘get it’.

Why do I write?

I dunno really. Do I seek attention and validation? Probably. Certainly the former. But after reading some your FFs, I was inspired. I think I wrote Long Shadows of the Past as a poser but didn't really think I'd have much more to say. After reading some of the young Shepard FFs, and having such a strong head canon for my own Shepard, the words just started flowing.

I'm a creative at heart anyway, arty in school, musical in adult life, and being a guitarist I obviously like to 'show off' I suppose. So FF is just a further extension of that really.

Alternatively, say Eff it and do whatever the hell you want. I certainly did.

The rank system in the Alliance is damn near incomprehensible so I interpreted some things as best as I could and then said "meh, it works like this now, because I said so." Given what we've seen so far, there's no reason not to so long as it stays within the bounds of lore.

Edited to clarify.

Writing reasons, hmm...

Mostly, I write for fun. Sometimes, when you write, you feel a click in your head when everything just fits and you can type on for however long the muses grant you. It's an addictive feeling but incredibly frustrating when the inspiration pool is all dried up. I write to convey ideas and emotions to my audience, whether that's to my friends or a larger audience, in a form that I can manage and that's accessible to everyone with some form of literacy. Sometimes, ideas demand to be written down, characters in your mind are so compelling that not writing them down is painful. Sometimes, your thoughts are transcribed so articulately from your head to your screen that it fills you with a sense of pride and accomplishment when others can understand what exactly your ideas mean.

I've actually leaned towards satire/parodies in previous stories, because, unfortunately, my sense of humour leaks out in everything I do. On the other hand, I love doing horror too, because it evokes such visceral imaginings from me that really makes me think about what scares us at an instinctive level. Also, my nightmares are oddly lucid and plot-driven for some reason, as are my dreams when I can squeeze stories out of them. They make great writing material.

However, I am relatively new to writing itself and have been out of it for a while. Started when I was 12, wrote on and off during high school and university. Still unsure about what writing medium and style I would like to go in, although I do know I would not write techno-political thrillers or romance. Just not into it all that much.

Edit: My experience with poetry is that I can only write good ones when I am in abject misery. Seeing as how I like to avoid that kind of stuff....well, let's say it's not a viable option.

Yea, I missed that part out in my previous post.  ^^

And as I always say, if you don't like or enjoy what you write (prose or music) then why would you do it?  Writing a paragraph/chapter/story/melody/solo that you're proud of is a great feeling.

Something unexpected though is how sappy and sentimental my writings are lol.  If you knew me in real life you wouldn't expect it anyway, I certainly didn't.  That's just how they wrote themselves if you know what I mean.

Haha, that's why some of my stories I never share with anyone. Pretty sure I'd die of embarrassment first before they can skim through it.

I always wondered this about writing music. How do you start? Does the beginning of a tune come to you first or do you just sitting there with an idea in your head and you work out some notes to convey the emotion in the idea?

Anyway, related to reasons above, here's an open question: why do you write?

Getting in late on this particular topic, but here goes:

Writing for me has always been more about keeping myself sane than anything. Hence the dozens of short stories, two half-finished novels, three novellas and four different RPG worlds I have created over the years and then shared with only a handful of people. I've always had an overactive imagination and I needed some kind of outlet for it. I've been writing "stories" since I was a child. I spent 2-1/2 years as a kid writing my own choose your own adventure... longhand... in a notebook (and boy do I wish now that I hadn't thrown it out during the Great Purge when I graduated high school).

I've wanted to be a writer forever. Although honestly I'm not sure why. Would I love to get published and be a famous writer? Yes. But not for the fame or attention... to be honest I hate attention in my daily life. I would much rather be anonymous. But I'd love to write professionally just so I could make a living doing what I love.

But I guess the real reason I write is because my imagination is always running. I've never had problems with writer's block the way other people seem to experience it. I refer to it instead as "imagination shift". I don't stop working on things because I run out of inspiration so much as because my imagination shifts to a new idea and it just won't get back on track... so I'll start writing something new. I couldn't even put a number on the quantity of unfinished stories saved on my laptop. A few hundred maybe? Getting those ideas out of my head and expressing them, even if it's something no one else will ever see, makes me feel much better.

The biggest reason for my sudden desire to publish a fanfic and start putting my work out there for an audience is for the possibility of improvement. I want to improve as a writer with a mind toward turning it into a career. I have always struggled financially, because I never finished college and have been stuck in go-nowhere labor jobs all my life. If I could write for a living, it would be the ultimate career for me. I could stop working in jobs I absolutely hate, and do something I love... and get paid for it. I will always write. But getting paid to do it would be a dream come true.

Mostly these days, I just contribute to a monthly music challenge set by a friend on soundclick.com.  My own stuff before that was pretty metally prog orientated.  Our hostess Jude sets the style/country/concept and a bunch of us write a piece each in around 2 weeks.  So for that, inspiration comes from her selection, and the personal 'feeling' of that style/country/concept.  I try to be a bit off the wall like lol.  Like last month was 'the circus', so I went straight down the alley of darker stalls to the geek show.  It was called 'Nervous Chickens' haha.

But yea, the melody/tune can sort of just come to you.  I improvise a lot (well, I say I improvise, but really I just make it up as I go along.  Bu-dum-tish, I'm here all week.) so melodies can just appear sometimes.  At times I might have a groovy riff to play with, but the accompaniment is just elusive and can take a while to come together.  It's different with each track, much like with writing.  Some almost write themselves, there's an obvious (to you at least) progression and direction, while others are just awkward, and you have difficulty expressing what you want to say.

I don't mean to sound harsh, because I know how it is to finally finish writing a chapter and have the urge to post it immediately. But as a reader, those are the sorts of things I notice, and they genuinely detract from the story for me. It might be just me, it might not be. Judging from how often editing comes up in this thread, it probably isn't.

I would suggest, and I'm sure there are a number of people on this thread who agree with me, ignore that urge, don't post immediately. Go to bed, or wait a few hours if you're writing during the day. Come back to it later and proofread it. Your writing will be the better for it.

I agree, proofreading is a must. But if you can get a beta-reader, that might even be better. Because as someone who proofreads his own writing (multiple times) each time I finish a chapter or story, I can tell you that when you proofread your own writing, you will mentally smooth out rough patches without even realizing you're doing it. I can't tell you how many times I've written something, proofread, edited it, proofread, edited some more, proofread the next day, and saved it... only to reread it a month later and find a dozen spelling errors and grammatical issues in it even after I know I proofread it three times.

I know that even after spending days proofreading and rewriting parts of my current fanfic, I still keep finding contractions in the speech of my Asari characters... and I've been really working at removing them.
