Why does everyone post while I'm sleeping???
I feel this. I really do.
@MrStoobs: I wouldn't mind the monthly challenge, even I know it's sitting on the backshelf right now. It's fairly short, and I do my best work when I'm trying to avoid doing something else *stares blankly at word document*
As for the reviewing thing, the thing that bothers me the most is when I read something and I don't like or am not impressed by it, but I can't articulate why. It drives me crazy. Their spelling and grammar is good. Their use of story lore is decent. Their plot is interesting, but I can't get into it. Something about it just irks me enough that I might just skim by when I look at my list of fanfics to read, but I don't know how to put it into words in a review. There's not many that do that, but it's irritating to catch myself so ineloquent at times.
As for review responses, the replies to my reviews have been generally positive, but if there were things that bothered me about commenting on pieces, it's how the owners of the pieces would use arrogance as a shield from actually absorbing constructive criticism. I got some experience in this when I took a creative writing class. You can seriously see how high their noses get when the prof offers suggestions to improve their work. I get it. You got your work published. If you're so good at it already, why are you taking this class in the first place? I also know some aspiring actors like this who are so arrogant, they're delusional. Man, just take the constructive criticism and flow with it. No need to invent your own reality to avoid it o_O

And geez! The last time I slept, I came back to two new pages in this thread. Today I came back to three and a half!

It happens, occasionally. I think there have been two chapters in DE3 that I just haven’t gotten into for some reason…usually in those cases, I’ll let it sit and come back to read the chapter again to try make sure it’s not simply my head space. In the end, I’ve pointed out the good parts and stated it’s not working for me…maybe given my typical preferences it’s even useful info.

I meant to touch upon this earlier…defensiveness is always a problem. It’s a constant struggle to really take in criticism.
Some people just are beyond help, so to speak, but you can always take comfort in that even most people who seem to defend something might only be doing so ‘publicly’, and will privately be affected either consciously or unconsciously.

Welp, you're not describing me. I'd just assumed you were doing residency in a hospital, although I couldn't guess your exact field. Something in the ER? A surgeon of sorts?
And I've just shown off my ignorance of hospitals and the medical profession in general. So... distraction disguised as a question. How do you guys come up with names for your Shepard/OCs in your stories? Do they have some sort of meaning behind them or were you just making it up on the fly?

@noxi: Haven't read your story yet, but it's on my list, and when I get there I look forward to seeing if I can guess it too!
Edit: The story in question being Nova et Vetara. Read two out of the three one-shots though!
@Icy: Making it up on the fly. As long as it sounds good in my head and seems to fit the character, I'll go with whatever I come up with. Of course, not everyone agrees with what I think fits a character... I've had a number of criticisms from friends over the years about my names for elves not being very elf-like, and I'm sure I'll get the same about asari, even though I think they sound appropriately asari-like. But you have to go with what speaks to you, I think.
And I'd take the Salarian metabolism, if I could have the 40 years starting now. The eiditic memory would be darn fine too.

I named my Femshep Caligno Shepard.
It's hilariously ridiculous.
Played the games (ME 1&2) six times each... Once with each class. Mostly play as a Femshep because I prefer female protagonists in general. The names for my various Shepards are usually inspired by people I know or have known:
Raven
Melody
Amy
Jennifer
Ichigo
And my MaleShep: Matthew

Hrm. Well, I come up with character concepts and apply names to them, generally. Sometimes I get a sense of their name, just emanating from their details. Other times, I get inspiration out of the blue.
My main shep, Amber, gained her name because I felt the compound truly fits her. Initially, I enjoyed the notion that the compound fit her character well, based on the fairly small amount I knew about it, but with some minor research, it kind of escalated a bit. I'm trying not to be too blatant, but seasons matter in my fic, especially winter and spring. That amber was historically considered by some as "the leavings of the frozen sea", the remains after the spring thaw...it just fit so perfectly with her planned progression. Between the colour reminding me of autumn, and how its soft, sticky form grows harder in time, protecting what's within...that it burns when exposed to fire and hot temperatures(my Shep hates fire, no good memories from it)...it just fit.
I don't really want to get into too much detail, because spoilers and all, but yeah, it's really fitting for her.
Melody, an OC in my fic, gained her name because she reminded me of a song. Not any specific song, just...music. I'd give more details, but I'm not sure if it could spoil anything(probably not), and I don't feel like taking a risk.
But yeah, those are the basic elements.

I don't have a first name for Shep in my fanfic although the Shepards I made do have them in the game; Honor, Alex, April. Thing is, when I read other fanfics and first names come into play, I tend to lose some immersion because
* Shep was never addressed by first name IG
* The name does not gel with the ones I gave Shep IG
Hence I kept it short and simple : Shepard. Even when Liara (LI) talks to Shep, it's still the same as it was IG.
P.S. For OCs, for humans, pretty much generic. For Asari, Salarians, etc, phonics.

As for my Shepard? Her name is Victoria. I don't think any explanation as to why I chose to name her like that is necessary.

Did you see it in game or just flying around somewhere? (both cases would be hallucinations but the latter is more serious...)

I was more joking about that then anything else. I feel rather strange. I should be dead tired but I feel more awake than usual.

My sleep schedule is ridiculous as well... Its seems like I get tired around 10 pm but if I manage to make it to midnight (usually because I am busy gaming or writing) I cease being tired until around 5 am.
