Oh wow. I totally forgot about that woman on Illium. And the turian in the Normandy's Docks. I knew of the Poetic Krogan. Having to deliver that recording in ME3 was heartbreaking. I totally forgot about them.

And, I would agree, The phrases such as Oh My God and By The Goddess seem to be more culture based rather than religious. I believe Liara states that not many still believe in the old faith when you visit the...whatever it is she calls it, a church?

Anyways, I suppose I'm including the relationship in his backstory to explore a point that's slightly glanced over in the game, which is the fact that Shepard is not and never will be this godlike figure that everyone makes him out to be. He had family, friends, and a love on Mindoir. A perfectly normal life.

Sounds interesting, although waaay too organized for me

Plus can’t really take time for a separate story of that length if it needs to be complete. There’s a spinoff I’ve been thinking, but it’d be an ongoing thing…

You know what time it is? It’s Auntie Lil’s Colorful Chart Story Time!

*cheers*

Posted Image

There’s an interesting dip all the way on the right side. The valley there is Ch. 22, the peak is Ch. 23, and the right-hand edge is Ch. 24. From the lines, you can also see that the Ch. 23 peak is not from a single day (which might make sense if I linked directly and it was popular), but multiple steady days (more or less). It’s unlikely that it’s just a bunch of re-reads, so there are likely new people…I’m not certain why there would be — on that chapter alone, I mean. I don’t recall advertising, maybe it was linked to from somewhere? Alternatively, of course, it could be some kind of a data problem with Ch. 22, but that seems less likely. Anyway, just a fun data point.

What else is there…hm, the recent daily visitors are more heavily weighed on the right-hand side. Whereas before lines might be fairly thick throughout the chart (i.e., amount of readers for all chapters was similar), now they dwindle more clearly toward the left. This suggests, probably, that most readers are more or less caught up. There are some visitors to the older chapters daily, of course, but the proportion has shifted slightly. That’s mostly a natural progression, but somewhat interesting.

Hooray! (Genuinely thinks this is cool stuff). Instead of editing, I will now attempt to do the same for Conversations. Question: what variables do you use to chart this?

I can see that the y-axis is # of visitors, what are the others?

Oh that's a cool idea! I actually started kicking around a Liara fic idea on a morning walk a few days ago. There's no theme, just "Have a completed ME fic by October" ? That sounds suspiciously manageable. *strokes proverbial beard*

It’s a simple stacked graph of daily visitors by chapter. I have one entry form, and several spreadsheets: raw number (as entered on form), running total (which just adds the raw numbers which are by month), and the difference per row (from running total). Then my main graphing data sources are pivot tables that tally the running total per day (in case I have more than one row/day), and difference per day (ditto). I only use the form, of course, don’t have to enter these manually into each refinement.

Edit: this is just plain Google Docs! Or Drive, whatever it’s called.

So, X are the chapters (I wish there was a way to add a proper grid, I haven’t bothered doing a standard overlay for it myself), and each line in Y is the visitor count for a day for each chapter — indeed making up the total number of visitors per chapter at the top!

Glad someone else likes these :P

The colors themselves are meaningless, actually :) They’re just to differentiate the lines from eachother. It would be kinda cool if it was possible to e.g. assign a color from ‘cold’ to ‘hot’ based on the total count per day or something.

(And in fact you could do that, programming it yourself — or using a toolkit — but that’s way too much work for this!)

Totally unrelatedly, military rank capitalization is annoying.

Badum-tsh.

@lilli, as in, it's a pain to capitalize them or it's a pain to figure out how to abbreviate and then capitalize them?

I rarely abbreviate. The rule is, essentially, that it is capitalized if and only if it is used as a part of the person’s name. So:

“It’s good to see you, Commander Shepard!”

But it’s unclear which it should be in this case:

“It’s good to see you, commander!” (or, less likely, Commander.)

…And then there are the cases where the rank refers to an office, in which case it is capitalized.

Yeesh.

Got a topic for today that i've been asking in my own thread, but I'd like to pose the question here.

fainmaca wrote...

Random question for today: What weapons do you think best suit the different personalities on the squad? I'm trying to create a unique default combat style for each of my OCs, and I thought maybe picking a preferred weapon/power would help do that. Why do you think said weapon/attack suits the character?

If you'd like to go even more in-depth, what sort of loadout/power setup would you give these characters? Bearing in mind the following class setup (this is just to loosely define what their main strength is):

Revenant: Adept
Etarn: Vanguard
Delexia: Infiltrator (No cloak ability, though. This is just to show she specialises in a mix of combat and tech, with emphasis on combat.)
Falere: Sentinel
Elanie: Engineer
Jorall: Engineer
Jano'Yorish: Soldier
Feron: Infiltrator

Thoughts?

I know its a little more geared to my fic specifically, but you could answer this question by dealing with the non-OC squaddies (i.e. everyone from the previous games except Tali and  Liara {not recruited... yet}, Wrex {still keeping him keeping the clans in line} and Ashley {living up to her nickname on Virmire in this particular Shepard's story}).

Any suggestions?

P.S. Yes, this does mean I'm writing a combat segment.

In the second case, I would capitalise. Consistent with the game anyways.

I suppose the rule could be amended to capitalize when it’s used as a part of or as a name, and when it is not prefixed by the…and even then, meh, I dunno.

I groan again. Either way, I should pick one and do a pass for consistency.

Well, in my experience (of watching too many Miranda videos as 'research'), it is done that way.

"Oh, pardon me, Commander." and "Oh, still impatient, Commander?"

I always capitalise when referring to Shepard. I.E. I'm always talking about him as 'the Commander', but other commanders are not capitalised, if you get what I mean. Example, in this current chapter I have a Batarian general who is referred to by his name or as 'the general'.

I'm probably doing it worng, but the system works for me.

@lilli, got it. I would treat it as capitals. It's "Good to see you, Commander." in the same way that it's "Good to see you, Shepard." It's being used in place of a person's name. As opposed to, the commanders, the lieutenants etc.

@fainmaca: It depends on the combat. At long ranges, infiltrators and soldiers are more likely to favour their sniper rifles and assault rifles while the rest of the gang uses their skills/powers or tries to flank whatever it is they're fighting. At shorter ranges, soliders may keep the AR going, but may also switch over to shotguns, while the infiltrators switch over to pistols and everyone alternates between short range weapons and powers/skills.

Tali is good for crowd control because of her drones, and she's also pretty adept at stripping shields and overloading weapons. Infiltrators (if they're sneaky) are more likely to be able to flank enemies, pushing them in the direction of the rest of the squad, if they're more snipey then they should be further back, picking off enemies at the edges, funneling them into a kill zone. Sentinels are pretty versatile, but they should use small arms (eg: pistols, SMGs) so it's easier to throw off biotic/tech attacks (easier to hold small arms in one hand).

If you're looking for specific weapons, now that Kaidan uses assault rifles he may favour the M-15 Vindicator (it's fairly light as ARs go) which would make it easier to do sentinel-y things. Garrus is likely to favour stronger, one shot, one kill, sniper rifles like the M-29 Mantis, or very powerful semi-automatics like the Black Widow rather than ones which take a number of shots to put someone down.

Just some thoughts.

@dpmeggers: I don't know... I'm not thinking specifically of tactics, more of a statement as to who these characters are. Would Garrus be enough of your usual Turian to prefer something like the Phaeston, or would his time spent on Omega mean that he's become more familiar with exotic weaponry, and so might own a few really outlandish guns, maybe even some of... say... Batarian make?

In ME2, Jacob makes some suggestions about new Alliance innovations (The Phalanx springs to mind). Is he keeping tabs on the latest developments, possibly through an old contact in the Alliance? Does he tend to prioritise new innovation over tried and tested weaponry?

Even on the front of biotics, I can see Jack using them as more of a brawler, while Samara might use the same powers with the finesse of a martial artist.

Delexia, for example, is a pirate. that would indicate to me a mindset that may be more inclined to fight dirty. She already has the Corruption Ammo I came up with for her (basically reinstating the Polonium Rounds lost from ME1), and her Shuriken Grenades (stickies, essentially). But what else might she use? As a pirate, she may be more acclimated to close-quarters fighting, with shotguns or SMGs. Is there a particular model of black-market gun she'd prefer?

Yep! There are some deadlines you have to meet though so the artists can do their part, but they're honestly not that bad. Just have a short summary ready by August 10th (like, a paragraph at most), rough draft finished by Sept. 15th, and final draft finished by the beginning of October. It's a great opportunity if you've ever wanted to see fanart done of your own fic, plus October 1st we'll all have over 50 new fics to read =)

Other than that, you're free to do literally whatever you want for pairing, genre, and length.
