Owing to my computer dying I lost all my saved games, so am replaying and coming at it after a break has made me pay attention to certain aspects.    After we have been on the rescue mission to the Fade to rescue Feynriel and my companions other than Anders have betrayed me under the influence of the demon, he quips that "there is nothing like possession to keep you from the influence of demons" (or words to that effect).

It then occurred to me that possibly this is part of the reason that Rivanni wise women deliberately allow themselves to be posssed, not by demons but by beneficent spirits, as this gives them some sort of protection against demons.   One spirit cannot take you over if another is already in residence.      Then it also occurred to me that this might also be true of mind control generally, so blood mages/somniari can't attack your mind if you are under the protection of a fade creature.    This might account for why the wise women originally took this course, since they have been around since long before the Chantry and therefore at a time when the Tevinter Magisters ruled the whole of Thedas.

I am hoping that we may get the opportunity to meet one of these Rivanni wise women in DA3 - even better if she is a companion - but at least learn a bit more about how they operate.

Another thought was that Andraste might have been in the same "wise woman" tradition and she was technically possesed by a benign spirit - hence the rumours about her being a mage and the insights she had about the Fade.

I agree with this. Andraste was a mage, she commune with one of the Fade spirit in which help her to fight against Tevinter mages. But her follower who become fanatic believe that spirit is a god, and she becomes a prophetess long AFTER she died.

Andraste history is a myth. The Chantry themselves do not know the accuracy but they are driven by a blind faith. If you remember there is one quest in DA:O where the Warden found an ancient scroll, we don't know what is written in there but the hint is there is another story about Andraste.

It was the Warden who found the ancient ruin that happen to be Andraste tomb. And that ruin was crawled by another sect of Andrastrian cult. They have different version of Andraste story. The game DIDN'T provide us what is true and what is not, it is up to the player to determine, to believe or not to believe anything, or just take it all so-so. There are equal part of the stories.

Just look at how the Chantry don't even know where Andraste remain is, so how come they are so sure about everything? It is because of fanaticism. They are all driven by that all these time. It just that their fanatical level is different with Kolgrim cult, because of different version of the story and different motivation.

As for the topic, yes...the game also shown that there are some characters are actually an abomination, being possesed by spirit such as Wayne and Anders, but these kind of possesion always get underway from the Chantry watch, because they are not labelled as "Abomination"

Flemeth herself is an abomination, but the game never give a conformtion anywhere...it is because the game want to maintain that "abomination" is the Chantry propaganda.
