Bianca gets some additional rune slots. Yep, that's it. No crazy Varric or anything, Rune slots

Asch is right but because I'm in a pedantic mood tonight technically its not the idol but a small shard of it left over since as merisith turns it into a glowing red sword cough..........lightsaber

It does seem to take a while for the lyrium idol's power to take effect.

Doesn't someone say ingame that breaking the idol seems to make its effects more powerful?

Maybe Varric will be a boss in DA3. :P If you thought Bianca looked improbable now...

Apart from the rune slots, nothing really happens in DA2, but you never know what might happen in future games.

Other than the rune slots, nothing. The decision's basically just another way for you to gain either friendship or rivalry with Varric. Of course, I always have everyone except Sebastian maxed out prior to Act 3 anyway, so I hardly need it.

That's interesting because that shard began driving varric crazy even before he asks you if he can keep the shard.

Hell he didn't even touch it yet and went insane (when the cleaning lady in the room comes out). And it was just a small part of the idol, Meredith had most of it.

It's actually just a really cheap excuse to get some friendship or rivalry with Varric... after all, you get a rune if you keep it and give it to Sandal.

Well most folks seem to think that all that happens is that Varric gets some extra slots.  These people aren't in the know, which I am.  The real asnwer is the Dragon Age Franchise's latest foray into the world of entertainment.  The situation comedy!  The premise is as follows:

Famed adventurer, story-teller and personal finance enhancement specialist inherits his uncles home in a small Ferelden village.  Hilarity ensues when he moves in with his good friend, Larry, a sentient Lyrium Idol bent on a series of wacky world take-over plots.  Can this odd pair of roomies manage to get along, what about when a wacky neighbor named Carver Hawke moves in right next door?  And what about Fenris, the magic-hating landlord (mind the plot hole)?  Can Varric and Larry pull the wool over his lyrium-etched eyes?  Find out this fall on "That Darn Idol".  8pm Eastern Time 11pm Pacific.

Expect a lot of cameos from other DA characters, qunari jokes in spades, and wackiness galore.  Do keep in mind that my source for this information was the evil voice in my head.  So you might want to take it with a grain of salt.
