So, it is clearly estabilished during the Mass Effect 3 ending(s) that the Reapers were created to stop synthetic from, one day, wipe out all organic life. All their actions, from Sovereign "earlier" attack on the Citadel, are supposed to serve the bigger purpose, to fulfill their primary goals: preserve organic life, prepare the most advanced race to be harvested and give the primitive races the opportunity to rise.

So why did they caused the Rachni Wars? They unleashed the Rachni on the Galaxy on purpose it seems, "altering their songs", indoctrinating their leaders to make a peaceful race wage war against the other races. This war caused the death of billions of organics, and also started the chain of events that eventually led to "waste the potential" (Harbinger's words) of the Krogans.

So why? Where they already losing their minds? Was this the first of many errors, the kind of errors that made a human reach the Catalyst and shut them down for the first time? Where they, after thousands of Cycles, losing their grasp on the Galaxy?

What are your thoughs about this appearent flaws in the Reapers' scheme?

PS: I would love if this thread could be spared from thousands of "Space Magic!" and "Artistic Integrity" posts.

I always thought the Rachni war was initiated solely by Sovereign, one of its plans to regain the Citadel.

They weren't really peaceful when they were encountered in this cycle. The Protheans had encountered them in their cycle and saw they were were resilient creatures that had peaceful tendencies to them.

So they eliminated the peaceful queens and used the warlike queens to breed an army to unleash on their enemies until the Rachni got out of control forcing the Protheans to attempt genocide on them. Fun times.

Maybe it would have factored into the whole dark energy plot before that was thrown out the window.

Lol @ space magic and artistic "let's focus the camera on Kaidan's rear" integrity.

But, to be serious, I think that Sovereign needed some sort of army to try to "take" the citadel by force. At this point in time, there was no army of synthetics to command, nor did he probably have any idea about the Conduit. He had probably just tried to signal the keepers and failed.

Once he failed with the Rachni, he then had to double back and do a little research - he needed a way to interface with the Citadel to open up the relay manually. The opportunity didn't present itself until he found Saren.

They were probably going to be a tool of the reapers when they invaded the galaxy and so were left lying beyond an inactive relay waiting for the reapers' return. However this plan was ruined when salarian explorers activated the relay and unleashed the rachni on the galaxy, leading to their extinction.

The Catalyst and the Reapers are crazy and liars. They kill for the fun of it.

Example: They say they want to save organic species from synthetics and preserve advanced civilizations in Reaper form.

They subjugated the zha's AI and forced them to turn against the zha and turn them into synthetic hybrid slave husks in the form of the zha'til that eventually self-propagated into "mechanical swarms" that began to "blot out the sky" of their planet, forcing the protheans to supernova the zha's sun to stop them.

I don't see how this preserves ANYTHING or has any other goal aside from just being dicks.

You know, I honestly never liked the idea that the Rachni Wars were caused by indoctrination. It just cheapens the entire conflict- would have been more compelling if there was an actual reason why the Rachni started their war.
As to your question- Sovvy's initiation of the wars doesn't really fit well with the Reapers' stated purpose in ME3. The best justification I can come up with is that he felt one or more the races were on the verge of creating synthetics (which could have been the Rachni themselves)

It was another one of Sovereign's crazy plans. It can be debated that Sovereign is actually working as an agent of Reaper Armada or was an outcast.

Unleashing the Ranchi, (And my own speculation that Sovereign could have possibly incited the Geth Rebellion), and the final gambit to take the Citadel were all just crazy schemes, possibly to overthrow the Catalyst based on the dialog at the end of ME1.

I had thought it was a way for Sovereign to see what "advanced" races would rise to stop the Rachni and provide an insight into how the current cycle handled war.

Remind me how long does it take the Reapers to reach the galaxy at FTL speeds without the Citadel relay?
(Hint..everything since the ME3'S ending doesn't make any sense)

Maybe they got bored waiting around for organics to evolve before they could kill them, so they incited a war to speed up the process.

Rachni queens have the ancestral memory of their predecessors. If their species was around during the Prothean's cycle as Javik says, perhaps the Reapers wanted to eliminate them before the Rachni could communicate those memories to other species? So they instigated a war that lead to their extinction.
