I noticed that the characters in mass effect all seem to be based on characters from films and TV. You keep having this deja vu feeling when you hear someone speaking, plus they look the part. I suspect there is a list somewhere but this is what I have identified so far.

Armando-Owen Bailey seems to be the only one voiced by the same actor as his auto ego.
Tricia Helfer is an ironic red herring, as Edi is obviously Anya.
Jane Shepard – Cain and Carter. Edit: Janet Fraser
Ashely – Sara2
Liara – Jadzia. I also think Kelly and Thane are Dax hosts – Ezri and Joran. Maybe the other six are out there!
Sayn – Rom
Garrus Garak.
Diana Allers – Chloe.
Dagg maybe Worf,
Miranda – Madalain. With Cerberus being Section1/Division/Center.
Citadel ~ B5.

So far DS9 6, Terminator 1, Nikita 2*, B5 1*, Stargate 2, BSG 2, and Buffy 1. Ok so I am better at girls than boys and overall not that good. Currently Illusive man and Traynor are killing me. I thought Operations and Martha  but that does not seem quite right.

Edit:
Traynor is Martha. There is a characteristic inflection in her voice and her right profile is a dead give away - approach her from her right and look slightly upwards.
The student that organises the other Grissom Academy students and gets some officer training from Shepard I reckon is Oliver Morgenstern
Barbarian refugee on Citadel docks, just says a couple of lines as you pass - G'Kar

garrus being like garak? ummm .. no... the two are nothing alike.

on the "omg-he's-so-cool" gauge though, the two are very close.

LOL, ED is nothing like Anya. Anya is a hilarious character because she says completely inappropriate things without realizing she's being inappropriate because she's not familiar with the rules of human society. EDI knows when she's being inappropriate, she just doesn't care.

'Lara'? If you mean Liara, there is NO way Liara is Jadzia. Jadzia may have that 'wise beyond her years' thing because of her joining to Dax, but under no circumstances could I ever see Liara hosting Jadzia's bachelorette party, among other things. No, if anything, Liara is Ezri, the sweet adorable young woman who gets involved in events over her head too fast for her to keep up with until she embraces everything that scares her (and severely polarizes the fans who either love her or believe that too much time is spent developing her in the middle of a dozen other storylines). I don't think Jadzia has a direct counterpart in Mass Effect. I mean, I can see some stuff for Kasumi that feel up Jadzia's alley, but nothing as a direct correlation.

And Garrus is not Garak. Both are awesome, yes, but Garak's analogue in ME would more likely be Javik, being cool and pragmatic, and very much alien to our thought processes, but still helping our side, not because he believes in our cause but because the alternative disgusts him. If I were to stick with DS9, I'd say Garrus is most like Kira. *beat* One moment, must go kink meme request that...

I am not saying that they are identical, just that they look and talk similarly and usually have other traits in common. I am guessing that the voice actors were each given a character to imitate. Artists as well.

Sorry I did mean Liara T'Soni as Jadzia just corrected it. I am not completely convinced of Garric, but Edi and Liara as Anya and Jadzia I am convinced of.

Edit: Liara/Jadzia came to me while I the game stuck with me looking at Liara's left profile.

Sorry, but I'm not buying it. Their mannerisms aren't even anywhere near the same. The ONLY thing that's even a little bit similar is they both have unusual speech patterns and both don't fully understand human behavior. That's where the similarities end though. Guess we'll just have to agree to disagree.

Do you mean 'alter ego'? I'm not sure what 'auto ego' means...

Agreed on both counts. Garak is probably closer to Mordin. You think he's just this polite, quirky guy and then it turns out he knows a million different ways to kill you. Mordin is more honest about it, though.

In fact, I would disagree with most of these assessments. My FemShep certainly isn't like Sam Carter. I can't stand her.

If anything, I'd say my Paragon FemShep is more like Zoe from Firefly. Alternately, I could see some Sarah Connor (TV Version) in her.

EDI is pretty much every robot ever. As such, her character arc in ME3 was fairly predictable.

What I mean is that I think the voice actors were given a character from film or TV to copy, and the artists based their drawings on the same character. Often dialogue from the character was used, usually with minor modification.

My FemShep certainly isn't like Sam Carter. I can't stand her.

The shephards are more complicated than the other characters. I think if you go 100% paragon or renegade Fsheps start to sound like Cain or Carter in the clips Some of the renegade responses are clear Cainisms form Razor. Admittedly I am mainly played a RFShep and only tried the other three permutations for a couple of missions. There might also be a third voice for neutral sheps.

EDI is pretty much every robot ever. As such, her character arc in ME3 was fairly predictable.

It is easiest to see in the image, EDI looks a lot like Anya. However the voice is similar and many lines EDI uses are very close to some of Anya's. Further the whole AI learning to live like human is similar to vengeance daemon learning to live like human thing.

Possibly Liara could be compared to Jadzia, but not Jadzia Dax, if you see what I mean.

Tali?

Not sure. She game me a strong feeling of déjà vu in MA1&2, have not met here again yet in MA3. When I do, I will see what I can pick up. Tali is difficult as you can not see her face very well, and have to rely on voice.

However I am now sure that Traynor is Martha. There is a characteristic inflection in her voice and her right profile is a dead give away - approach her from her right and look slightly upwards. Also I think there is a second Dr Who reference, the student that organises the other Grissom Academy students and gets some officer training from Shepard I reckon is Oliver Morgenstern.

I think you miss the point. Recognition is visual and audio, both Jadzia and Jadzia Dax look and sound the same as they are using the same body and vocal cords so it is not really possible to differentiate them.

After recognition you can consider traits if you wish to differentiate the host from Dax plus host. I suspect the shadow broker is Jadzia Dax, while cuddly Liara is more Jadzia.

Edit: Oh BTW don't you think the default FShep looks suspiciously like Janet Fraser Maybe there is more than I thought going on here.
