I whipped this up because I was bored. I used an original batarian character because at the time I never thought to use Balak. I really just want to see what people think. Color coded for paragon and renegade. The format isn't as clean as I'd like it due to the dialogue options. Also, I apologize for the darkness of the blue color. I also apologize if some of the dialogue options aren't color coded as this forum is giving me nothing but problems in that regard.

INT. NORMANDY cockpit
Shepard walks in.

JOKER: Commander, Captain Bailey wants to talk to you.

SHEPARD: Put him on.

Bailey appears as a hologram of only his torso and head.

BAILEY: Shepard, we got a problem.

SHEPARD: What is it?

BAILEY: The batarian refugees have taken the dock hostage.

SHEPARD: C-Sec can't do anything about it?

BAILEY: That's the thing, Shepard, they're demanding to see you.

SHEPARD: Great.

JOKER (sarcastic): I can't even begin to imagine why.

EDI: I believe this is in retaliation for Commander Shepard annihilating the Bahak system by destroying the Mass Relay there.

SHEPARD: Thank you EDI.

EDI: You're very welcome.

BAILEY: It's an obvious trap, Commander, but there are hundreds of innocents in there.

SHEPARD: I'm on my way. Tell your men to stand down; we don't want anyone getting jumpy.

BAILEY: I'll meet you outside the docking bay.

If Shepard accepts, then he meets Bailey outside the docking bay with two squad members. In this case, Garrus and Tali.

SHEPARD: C-Sec was made to deal with local trouble, so deal with it. I don't have time to keep the peace between pissed off refugees.

BAILEY: You could have just said no. Bailey out.

If Shepard refuses, we get a cut scene of C-Sec breaching the doors to the docking bay and going in armed and ready. The batarians are holding refugees hostage. There's a vicious fire fight, leading to all the batarians, all but three C-Sec, and a score of innocent refugees being killed. You lose your chance to get a batarian squad mate, Bailey hates you and refuses C-Sec help, losing any C-Sec related side quests, and the refugees stop trusting you. It flairs up old animosity toward humans. Will cause a race riot if you let the Council die in Mass Effect 1.

INT. DOCKING BAY - E24 ENTRANCE
Shepard and his squad exit the elevator. The door to the dock is closed.

SHEPARD: Captain Bailey.

BAILEY: Shepard.

SHEPARD: Any change?

BAILEY: Still demanding to see the Butcher of Bahak.

GARRUS: You blow up one star system...

SHEPARD: It was necessary.

BAILEY: Shepard, since the batarians are holding so many refugees hostage, we've brought in an assortment of non lethal weapons. Rubber bullets pistols, bean bag shotguns, stun guns and flash grenades.

TALI: I'm not sure that's such a good idea.

GARRUS: I don't know, I'd kind of like to be not kill anyone who doesn't deserve it.

BAILEY: It's your call, Shepard.

SHEPARD: I agree with Garrus. If we go in guns blazing then the batarians will have an excuse to kill the hostages. I'd rather not have to worry about where I point my gun.

GARRUS: Good call, Shepard.

SHEPARD: The batarians won't be firing rubber bullets and bean bags. We meet force with force. If civilians get in the way, well, that's war.

Bailey opens the doorway to the bay and Shepard and his squad enter.

INT. DOCKING BAY E24
The entire opening of the bay is empty. All the hostages and batarians are off screen to the right.

TALI: I don't like this.

They emerge and turn to the right. The batarians have all of the non-batarian refugees backed up against the far wall. batarians line each side of the hold, sit on top of the shipping containers that are used for quarters. They are all armed.

One batarian stands in front of the refugees, in front of the other batarians. Has has a pistol at his hip, His armor is black and gray heavy batarian battle armor, modified Armax Arsenal Armor with homemade repairs. He has a nasty burn scar covering the top of his head down the back and around his entire neck, and one of his eyes is missing. He has a custom four eyed Delumcore Overlay on his face. His name is Sahem Ale'adeh.

HOSTAGE: Damn batarians. We never should have let you on the Citadel!

SAHEM: Which one said that?

BATARIAN: This one.

The hostage is hauled to Sahem.

SAHEM: Filthy human. You spoke against us.

HOSTAGE: Your damn right I did! You're all a bunch of thugs and crooks!

Sahem draws his side arm, an M-3 Predator that has seen better days. He points at the hostage's head.

SAHEM: You're right.

SHEPARD: Enough!

Shepard and the squad walk up to the batarian, weapons in a rest position. The other batarians glare at them.

TALI: Now I know how the asari feel.

GARRUS: Only if they were being stared at by a thresher maw.

Sahem smiles at seeing Shepard.

SAHEM: The Butcher of Bahak.

SHEPARD: And I regret it every day, but I did what was necessary.

SAHEM: You're failure to warn us murdered three hundred thousand of my people!

SHEPARD: I tried.

SAHEM: Then I will kill you to avenge our people.

SHEPARD: And I'd do it again if I had the chance.

SAHEM: I should kill you just for the insult!

SHEPARD: I'd like to see you try.

SAHEM: Violence is all the humans understand.

SHEPARD: We aren't here to fight. We're just here to make sure that these people are safe. They've suffered enough.

SAHEM: Then why do you bring weapons?

SHEPARD (if you chose to bring nonlethal): Nonlethal. Rubber bullets and bean bags.

GARRUS: They'd hurt like hell, but you'd live.

SHEPARD (if you chose to bring lethal): We don't trust you. We've never trusted you. It's just a shame the Reapers didn't finish you off.

Sahem grabs a nearby hostage, the TEENAGE REFUGEE who was waiting for her parents. She screams. He pulls her in front of him and puts a gun to her head.

SAHEM: Would you fire on your own people?

PARAGON OPTION
SHEPARD: The entire galaxy is under attack! Every single person here has had to watch family, friends, pets, die. They've lost everything they've had, everything they've known. We've all lost in this war! I know Alliance and the Hegemony have never seen eye to eye, but now is not the time to try and settle old grudges. The Reapers are here, and if they win old grudges are meaningless.

Sahem looks down at his M-3 Predator pressed against the teenage refugee's head. He looks back up at Shepard, and his hand waivers.

Shepard gets a renegade option to shoot Sahem in the face. If he does, Sahem is dead and you've lost your chance at the squad mate. As he falls, the teenage refugee flees, and the other batarians open fire. Your squad takes cover and a firefight ensues. If you brought lethal weapons, all the batarians will die, but the hostages will survive.

If you brought nonlethal, the batarians will be incapacitated and rounded up by C-Sec.

If you don't take the renegade option the conversation continues.

SAHEM: You speak the truth, Butcher. We have lost much. Our own people turned against us, brought down our defenses. The Reapers swept over us like the Alliance at Torfan. We are scattered, broken. We will need friends to help us rebuild.

SHEPARD: Let her go. Please.

Sahem releases the teenage refugee, who flees back to the others. Sahem drops his gun.

SAHEM: We surrender, Commander Shepard.

The other batarians look at each other, and follow Sahem's lead.

TALI: Well that was easy.

RENEGADE OPTION
SHEPARD: Only a coward hides behind a hostage.

SAHEM: You dare insult me!

SHEPARD: You wanted me here, you have me here. Now stop hiding and let's finish this.

Sahem points the gun at Shepard. Shepard shoots the gun out of his hand. Sahem shoves the teenage refugee at Shepard.

Shepard steps to the side and the teenage refugee stumbles and falls hard on the floor.

Shepard catches the teenage hostage and side steps as Sahem comes in with a punch.

Every time Sahem tries to strike Shepard, Shepard gets a renegade option to strike back. If Shepard strikes back, they engage in a pretty brutal fist fight, ending with Shepard slamming Sahem into the wall and dropping him with a stiff blow. Sahem sinks to the ground.

Otherwise Sahem will tire himself out.

SAHEM: Enough. I relent.

Shepard chooses to ignore him and beats him to death.

Shepard relents.

GARRUS: Well that was easy.

SHEPARD: Order your men to stand down!

SAHEM (to other batarians): Stand down! That's an order!

REST OF THE SCENE
Shepard walks up to Sahem and holds out his hand.

You get another renegade option. If you take it, you kick him in the face and knock him out

SHEPARD: Surrender accepted. Lock them up.

Shepard and his squad turn and walk out of the dock as C-Sec moves in.

If you don't take the renegade option, Sahem takes your hand and Shepard helps him up.

SHEPARD: What's your name?

SAHEM: Sahem Ale'adeh. I was a the equivalent of your rank of Commander in our fleet.

SHEPARD: Not anymore. You take orders from me, understand? If you ever disobey an order I'll shoot your body into the nearest star.

SHEPARD: Well then, Commander Ale'adeh, will you join us on the Normandy?

TALI: What are you doing, Shepard?! He's a batarian!

GARRUS: Have you lost your mind?

SHEPARD: He's just another gun hand. If he dies, he dies. One less batarian to worry about.

SHEPARD: He's a good man, he's just seen more than anyone ever should. We need to put aside old grudges and old prejudices for the good of the galaxy. If we're fighting each other than we aren't fighting the Reapers.

GARRUS: If you say so.

Bailey walks up to them.

BAILEY: C-Sec will take it from here, Commander. And thank you.

SHEPARD: Next time make sure C-Sec grows a pair and does their own work.

SHEPARD: It's all in a day's work. If we don't watch out for each other, who will?

BAILEY: What about this one?

SHEPARD: He's with us.

BAILEY: If you say so.

SHEPARD: And Bailey...

SHEPARD: Treat them like the animals they are.

SHEPARD: Take good care of them.

BAILEY: Will do, Commander.

SHEPARD (to Sahem): I'll meet you in Dock D24.

SAHEM: Thank you, Shepard.

He walks off.

GARRUS: We should alert the crew to the new arrival. Don't want anyone shooting at our new... friend.

TALI: I hope you know what you're doing.

SHEPARD: Me too.

Still think we should get an already established batarian like Anto or Ballack, but that story isn't bad. I would have just made Sahem's men get out of hand and try to kill a hostage, only to get a bullet in the brain from Sahem and expanded on his character a bit more. Might want to take a queue from Long John Silver from Stevenson's Treasure Island for how to make a criminal likable.

Yeah, I was thinking about switching it to Balak myself, but I wrote it up before I thought of that. I do like your idea about how to expand the character. I've been thinking about doing another draft (with or without the branches), and I might use that, thank you.

I just really want a batarian squad mate.

Eh, I was thinking more along the lines of a Batarian Female, who was romanceable...

What? I find Batarian Women attractive
