If you killed the mages you probably don't have that option anymore.

ooo but didn't I have to complete circle of mages anyway? :S I don't recall having a choice in killing the "mages", when you fight the first mage in the tower during the cut scene.. I let her escape.

No it's not that fight, you get to choose it when you see wynne either kill her and other mages or take her side. If you choose to save mages, you can get them to help Connor by speaking with first enchanter Irving at the entrance of tower, but since he is dead i dont know if there is a new mage leader newer got Irving killed, only option is just blood magic or just kill the boy.

you have to side with the mages, so they can give you lyrium to power the spell that sent you or another mage into the fade, rather than powering the spell with someone's life or just kill conner.

Well then, you let him die.  You have to save that guy to get the Mages.

that means you didn't use the litany during the boss fight, so the boss changed all the mages into abomination.  you have in effect choosed to side with the templars.

It's a shame you can't send yourself into the Fade in Redcliffe using the smuggled lyrium you get from the Orzammar sidequest (since you can't complete the quest if you side with the Templars). Sure, there are no Circle mages left to send you, but why not ask the Mage's Collective? After all you've been running stupid errands all over the place for them, it'd be nice if they reciprocated a bit.

If you saved before the boss fight, you could go back and use the Litany of Ardralla. When you leave the Fade, you pick it up off Niall's body (at your feet). It appears in your skillbar, and when you get Wynne's voice cues (they're doing something to the mages, use the litany!) you click on it. You generally need to use it at least twice and sometimes more often (it depends on how long the fight takes).

However, you will lose anything you've done in the meantime.

You can also side with the templars by saving the first enchanter but by telling the Templar Captain he'd shouldn't be sure about them.

You dont really need Wynne's cue to save them..just be on the lookout of a huge circle around the mages and click on the litanny, it will break the circle and save the mage, about three or four times and it should be all good

Actually, this didn't work for me. While the FIrst Enchanter wasn't killed, the game still counted me as having sided with the Templars. When I suggested in conversation that we could go to the Circle for help, I was told that the circle had been annuled and I still had to make the tough choice between Conner and his mom. Though honestly it didn't seem to matter that much in the long run. I took a hit to Allister's popularity but he didn't leave the party. Eamon also gave me a reward for saving him even if I did have to kill off his wife.

Like the OP, I found every alternative except saving Connor and his mother completely unacceptable.

What I found out in my first struggle with this storyline was that, in order to save Connor and his mother, you MUST save Irving in the tower battle.

What I found out on my second runthrough that I didn't realize the first time, was that that Litany scroll HAS A BRIEF RECHARGE AND CAN THEN BE USED OVER AND OVER. And, you usually are going to in fact need to activate it several times in order to save Irving, even on Easy difficulty, and ESPECIALLY on anything higher than Easy.
