After a few hours of reading forum posts and tinkering, I was about to reluctantly give up on the ME character, which I spent dozens of hours creating in ME1 & ME2, as I suspect so many others have done before me.  I *finally* found a solution which worked for me, and after searching several forums, I have not seen anyone suggest this simple solution.  I don't know why it seems like no one tried this before, but hopefully it will save some other people lots of time and effort.

I believe Step 6, below, was all that was necessary (no gamersettings.ini edits, btw).  But let me summarize what I did to get my save imported:

1) Go to http://www.masseffec....com/import.php and review the basics for importing in their walkthrough.  Make sure your ME2 save directory is properly structured to begin with.

2) Download one of the saves available on that website, and copy it in the ME2 save directory according to the website's instructions. Load up ME3, select import, and see if the downloaded save shows up.  This worked for me; I could see the character that I downloaded, but not my own.  If you are able to import the downloaded save, then do not import it, but exit the game. This confirms that ME3 can at least find your ME2 saves.

3) Now, I reinstalled ME2, and replayed the final mission again, but I suspect this was unnecessary.  However, after passing the final mission, I selected to continue the game, then immediately saved a final game and exited ME2.

4) Download the latest Gibbed's ME2 Save Editor (i used 1.0.9.2), which you can find on that same website above, or many other places on the web.

5) Edit the most recent save game in your ME2 save directory (I used the save from my recent replay, but I suspect any save where you completed the "Suicide mission" would work.)

6) Now for the most important step, which I have not seen anyone else mention.  After loading your most recent save into Gibbed's editor, select the "Raw" tab.  About 5 lines down, you will see a field called "Current Loading Tip".  Change this value to "10", and save the file.

This was the key for me. I could not see my character in ME3 until I change this field.  After I simply changed the "current loading tip" from an original value of 86, to a new value of 10, ME3 displayed and imported the character. I have no idea why this worked, but it did.

I suspect that if I had simply edited my last save file which I had not touched for two years, and changed this value, I would not have needed to reinstall ME2, replay the ending and sift through internet tips for hours.  I probably could have been playing ME3 within 5 minutes of installing the game instead.

Hopefully, new players who run into this same importing problem will find this tip useful. Please reply if this trick works for you to keep this thread alive.

Nothing happens when I click on "Import Character".
