IMO - Female Mages should be very, very sexy... while Male Mages should come across as somewhat effeminate. The best way to do that of course is providing revealing robes for Females, and something like tights and high-heeled boots etc., for Males. Heh, heh.

It would also be very cool to have a Female Mage/Witch character… very old wrinkled, very powerful and with a voice like the wicked witch in Oz.

....

no.

mages are LOCKED IN A TOWER FROM EARLY CHILDHOOD.

why should they be physically attractive in the slightest?

actually theyd be:

probably quite fat

not built (i wanted to cry when my male mage with no robes looked like an athletic bodybuilder)

bookish looking

weak knowledge of out-of-tower society

Oh, no, no, no.  Just because a person spends most of his or her life locked in a tower doesn't mean they can't be very attractive.  Ever hear of Rapunzel?

Mages should look like normal people.

Normal people wearing toothed-condom hats and robes that resemble 3rd-world military uniforms with matching skirts and furry epaulets.

Duh.

They could have great genetics (as much a chance as anyone else) but the chances of them working out; concerned with their muscle:fat ratio is more unlikely. Not necessarily fat, just lacking muscle.

And I highly doubt they'd be fashionistas, period.

and something like tights and high-heeled boots etc., for Males. Heh, heh.

That made me cringe, not just impractical and there's no motivation why their fashion would steer that way, but...ew.

Also, being magic doesn't automatically make one sexy, flamboyant or effeminate. That's not how personalities work.

Well, there WAS that one mage who insisted on weapons training for mages, so they probably had some minimal fitness training. But yeah, I think they'd be pale, flabby, and generally more interested in reading books then looking faaaabulous.

Besides, everyone knows male mages are supposed to be elderly and stooped from the weight of the world on their shoulders, wearing gray robes with a peaked hat.  Hmph.

Hey! These feathers are the height of fashion in Denerim right now, thank you very much. And frankly this hood just wouldn't be the same without them.
/sweeps out of the room in an effeminate manner

Why in the world would male mages necessarily be effeminate?

I'm glad you prefaced that with "IMO" because it is not universal.

A sound mind requires a sound body. (obvious exceptions excluded)

I think the ideal mage is one who studies, spends time in quiet contemplation/meditation, and keeps his/her body fit.  There is a method to the universe around you.  I never cared for the concept of spoken-word magic.  I'm glad DA:O doesn't imply this.

I like that magic in DA:O seems to come from within, a force controlled by the will of mind and body.  Flinging fireballs should take a bit of physical effort in addition to mental effort.

I like your thinking. Mages and towers like monks and temples.

Haha I agree that they could have gone with a lot more flavourful approaches for some of the more unique mages BUT...from another thread:

Consider this: Being a mage is a VERY rare trait: Only 2 of the 3 known races can successfully wield its power; further to that a mage is known about quite early on in their childhood! Very quickly this mage-child will be confronted by the templars/chantry to be "imprisoned" and "trained" in the Circle of Magi or else be killed. He/She/It may try to escape to live as rogue mages that will likely turn into abominations through blood magic or improper use of magic tearing the fade.  We also know that the Circle of Magi exsists in almost every nation thanks to
many conversations and codexs (Zev has a lot to say on this matter haha) with the HQ of sorts being possibly the Tevinter.

So. In a SENSE THIS IS BEAUTIFUL for role playing purposes. OF COURSE Ferelden doesn't have a strip mall just for friggin mages! They are usually living in the circle or on a tight leash from the Templars. You do not
simply see mages having a stroll in Denerim Market.

From first seeing the First Enchanter in his gear you should start to generally understand that this is the universal approved uniform of the Circle of Magi. It is just as much a safeguard for YOU from templars AND the public to know "what" you are!..the people of these times are very suspicious and afraid of magic, just as some were towards technology/computers when it first came out (certainly not to this degree but yeah..) Any "unique" looking robe is usually worn by a malificar[SP?] of sorts I.E: Reaper Vestment! Hell Even the THOUSAND year old keeper of a certain place wears the same garb as ALL mages of the circle which
implies he too was originally a circle mage [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/smile.png[/smilie] However his apprentice (Trying to avoid spoilers) wears the more unique looking robe: AGAIN this means she is not a mage of the circle; this we learn if you talk to her deeply.

This all makes me feel it re-enforces the whole notion of the clothes being more of a cattle brand then providing any real usefulness besidescovering you up [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/tongue.png[/smilie]

I personally like this gal spellcaster getup:
Posted ImagePosted Image
It looks hot, yet not scantily clad. That takes skill! Posted Image The gal herself in the pic is hot too! Posted Image

As for guy caster fashion, it seems like most are shafted. Gandalf, Dumbledore, & Gammeldore (GrimGrimoire of the PS2) might be the only lucky ones. The rest are lucky if the getup only looks like a bathrobe, instead of worse... Posted Image

(The hair is cool too. The CC needs better cute & tomboy hair for the gals.)

Note: I have no credit at all whatsoever for the making of the wallpaper that pic was cropped out of. If ya wanna see it in it's original form, (& maybe grab it) it's on Ragnarok Online's home site.

I seriously want my mage to look like a deranged, effeminate, metrosexual cultist. I am not joking. I want evil looking robes, preferable with a large collar, spiky jewelry, and odd looking stuff. I would accept the thigh-high, heeled boots if I got a nice looking sacrificial dagger to match.

Yeah, because the Circle has strict rules against exercising and a healthy diet.Living in a humongous tower isn't the same as being chained to the floor of a 4x4 cell.

That's right.

I am the Archmage of all Thedas. One of the single most powerful beings alive. I tear apart realities with a single thought and a whisper. Entire nations bow to my all enveloping power. Nature itself parts when I walk the earth and the old gods hide when I enter the fade.

Naturally then, what clothes I am wearing, how fat my a&$ looks in this dress and which product I use for my hair are the thoughts that consume most of my time.

/rollseyes

On a side note, if that manga mage's skirt was a little lower, it could perhaps cover her bellybutton. Food for thought. :P

It's a low-cut, strapless mini-dress.  You think that isn't scantily clad?
