I've "heard on the road" that getting the boy to run off back to his farmhold in an attempt to save his mother results in future Chantry-board quest to investigate, and kill the invaders there. Does anyone know anything about this?

You get the quest to find his mother, but it's still inside the Lothering area, outside of the fencing where you find Sten's cage.

So it doesn't matter one iota how our interaction goes with this lad then?

So long as you mention him going to the Chantry, I think. If you just blow him off I don't think you get it. Complete the first set of Chantry quests, turn them in. New quests will be up shortly.

You don't have to send him to the chantry, I usually give him a silver to buy some food and then after the Bandit quest is completed, the quest involving his mother should appear on the board. Don't know what happens if you run him off though.

I had a bit of a sociopathic mage who didn't give the boy money or send him to the Chantry (think I told him his mother was dead and he ran off crying). Said mage still got the quest to find the mother, so it seems as long as you complete the bandit board quest, you'll get the keepsake quest afterwards.

You end up just killing wolves outside Lothering to reach mumsy's corpse and retrieve her keepsake ring - alas, nothing as exciting as visiting the kid's family home and having a chance to save his mother. Oh well!

And I was trying not to give the exact details of the quest so as not to spoil it for him.

You don't even have to talk to him for the quest to show up. You can just blow on by him & leave him standing by the bridge til the darkspawn come.

Well, 'tis the spoiler forums & better to suffer the crushing disappointment now rather than later! *chuckle* Actually, I was vaguely hoping to rescue her originally, then I did the quest.
