This is just a little idea I've been kicking around for a while, and I wanted to post it to get some feedback. NOTE! This is all conjecture and theory, based on what I know about the Dragon Age universe. I'm sure it has some holes, but it's still an interesting idea.

To begin, a question. What is the second most important thing about demons (the first being that they possess people)

Answer: they lie and manipulate to get what they want. Which means that anything any demon says to you should not necessarily be taken at face value.

The basic idea of my theory is that the demon was lying to Merrill when it said that the Eluvian would have acted as a gateway for it. I don’t believe that Merathari was actually in control at that point; the demon was just pretending she was. The only time a possessed mage showed any sign of free will was Connor, which was a special case in that he made a deal with the demon, rather than just letting it have free reign in his body. His soul was still intact, whereas the first thing the Pride demon would do is wipe out any trace of Merathari, since she’s a knowledgeable Keeper who might make trouble in the future.

The demon that possessed Merathari already had what it wanted, a mortal host, before Merrill and Hawke got to the cave. Why didn’t it simply leave? Because Merrill knew too much, and would try to track it down. Therefore; it had to kill her.

However, for all her innocence and naïveté, Merrill is no weakling. The demon would want to try and guarantee its victory before engaging. Therefore, it fell back to the standard demon skill of manipulation in an attempt to break Merrill’s will to fight. It could only do this with her because it knew nothing of Hawke and the other party members, so it focused on Merrill.

The demon shows this during the battle. It creates images appear of various Dalish Merrill knows and loves, blaming her for their deaths. It doesn’t appear in game, but I must think that their words are tearing Merrill apart on the inside. Had Hawke not been there to egg her on, she may well have  simply given up and let the demon kill her.

Another bit of evidence comes from the Witch Hunt DLC. Morrigan says that her Eluvian leads "beyond this world and beyond the Fade." If that were true, then how would Merrill’s Eluvian lead to the Fade? Is the demon even in the Fade, I thought it was imprisoned?

Also, why didn’t Merathari simply tell Merrill what the demon was up to? All she said was that the Eluvian was something that shouldn’t be tampered with; she never gave a reason. I know she saw Merrill as a child, but sometimes reasoning can work very well. If my theory is right, she didn’t have a real reason, and thus couldn’t tell Merrill.

Here’s my theory of what was going on. The demon was helping Merrill in the hopes that she would break its seal and let it in to help repair the Eluvian. Thus the mirror would be a “gateway” in that the desire for it to work would cause Merrill to do questionable things, which it did. It wouldn’t have power in and of itself.

Then Merathari came and broke the seal herself in an attempt to save Merrill. The demon had what it wanted, but understood that Merrill wouldn’t simply let it go. However, it no longer needed her alive, so it decided to kill her. It used everything it had learned about her, that she loved her clan and her people and would do anything for them; in an attempt to break her will so that it could kill her. However, like so many people in Kirkwall, it didn’t factor in Hawke, and thus it failed.

That’s my theory; please give me some feedback on the inevitable holes. No flames, though.

When it helped Merril before why didn't the demon take action then instead of waiting? You see how easy it is for Merril to 'slide' to the dark side when you do the Feynriel quest.

And reasoning with Merril isn't an option you can try to change her mind/deny quest and still it appears in your log.... Also when you chose not to talk to the keeper before heading there she still appears there...

And why was this demon 'powerfull' it fell as easy if not easier then most other pride w/e demons, the 'ancient evil' demon (darktown/scroll of w/e quest) was way harder. I mean you kill the demons in droves throughout the game.. And didn't the keeper say 'to fix the mirror the demon would come out and you (Merril) would be it's first victim'? So if the Eluvian didn't lead to the fade where is the demon then?

You'd need 10 dumptrucks just to fill the holes here..

Because the seal wasn't broken. She just spoke to it rather than let it into her mind and heart.

"And reasoning with Merril isn't an option you can try to change her mind/deny quest and still it appears in your log.... Also when you chose not to talk to the keeper before heading there she still appears there..."

Because before it was a matter of beliefs. Merrill believed that the blood magic was worth the knowledge she would gain from the Eluvian, while others didn't. If she had been given a direct, concrete reason why it was dangerous, she might have changed her mind. That's not a sure thing, but I would have thought Merathari would be using everything she had to convince Merrill to stop. And I don't get your point about Merathari still going if you don't talk to her, but she saw Merrill going up Sundermount and probably guessed what she was doing.

"And why was this demon 'powerfull' it fell as easy if not easier then most other pride w/e demons, the 'ancient evil' demon (darktown/scroll of w/e quest) was way harder. No, Hubris itself wasn't harder, it just had better minions (I hate Rage demons so much! Lore-wise they don't even work like that!) And that's more of a game "flaw", in story, trained Templar are terrified of Pride demons. As for slaughtering demons, well, you're Hawke and Varric's telling the story, what do you expect? And yes, whoever was in control of Marathari's body said that the mirror would be a gateway. My theory disputes the validity of that claim, seeing as it came out of absolutely no-where with no explanation of how it would work.
