The multiplayer portion of Mass Effect 3 relies heavily on teamwork. It is designed to require you to communicate and execute as a team or risk failure

Then why is there no text chat on PC?

The only moment where I think text chat could be possible is at the lobby, texting while playing would get a lot of people killed.

Other multiplayer games have it. Because of this PC gamers don't always buy mics. I'd rather my co-op buddies chat in between waves than not at all.

But I'm getting off-topic. I'll leave it at that.

Just have a quick question: will the AFKer see a countdown warning before being kicked? Like a 5 second warning or something.

That seems like a really good reason not to add text chat.  Encourage those headset-less PC gamers to get out of the stone age.  Headsets/microphones for the PC are dirt cheap, and the USB versions tend to have the ease of plug and play.

 Normally this would be a good idea, but seeing as the person can just rubber band their controller, I doubt it will work a lot of the time.

I think its a great step in the right direction.
This should make leeching alot more difficult at the very least.

 Thank you! I just had some user this weekend indignant about the fact that I raised his AFKing as an issue.

This.  I play at least 3-4 hours a day - and I have maybe experienced this in a few games since the launch.  I'm curious if this happens more on console....or maybe in gold matches.  I mostly play silver.

I love this addition. Even if the AFK's can figure out a way to circumvent the system (which those types usually do), it will at least make it much more of hassle for them lol.

Please add text chat if you want us to communicate.:) It'd be appreciated on PC.

I just came out of a game where a player was afk as soon as the game started (leecher?) left game between end of wave 2/start of wave 3 so I guess it's working.

Some people have AFK robots that spin their mouses (mice?) in circles while afk. So that will help bypass this silly new feature.

 An in-game voting system would be more beneficial.

1. Take controller.
2. Watch youtube while rotating joysticks aimlessly.
3. ?????
4. Profit!

using macro will be way for PC leechers but for console... doing rubber banding tech may result to an easier banhammer since its obvious your blatantly afking/leeching

Love how everyone as voiced concerns about how broken the AFK system and yet, despite at least two BioWare employees logging on in the last hour we have had NO response. I find this a little odd given that Anti-AFK Systems and other such features require work from both sides to optimise.

Add an in-game option for players to flag a user as an AFK'r. Something akin to the kick system. This new feature you just implemented will work for most cases, because only the desperate will AFK while rotating somehow. If a user gets reported enough, then ban the player for a day or so (random thought). If it was a buddy of mine in a private game, maybe I wouldn't care so much, but it sucks when you have a random person just sitting there "Occupy Mass Effect" style while everyone else does the work. Either that or give those that like helping the needy an option to allow AFK'rs. Maybe its a lot of development work and in the end doesn't matter all that much, but IMO AFK'rs suck just enough fun out of playing to make this something to focus a bit more attention on.

Still no word about if youre required to rotate the joystick pointlessly while dead to avoid being kicked????

if (user.isAlive() && user.isMakingSuspiciousMovements() && user.isWorkingOnObjective() == false) {
kick(user);
team.isHappy(true);
System.out.println("Yay!!!");
}

Two questions: Does this apply to people who are dead for two minutes?
And could they avoid get around being kicked by simply tapping a button every minute or so?

Dead players do not auto kick. :)

So... whats to stop a person from taking cover and tying a rubber band around their controller to constantly duck/strafe into the wall... "in motion" and yet be afk?? I don't see how this fixes the problem.

If youre dead and idle for 1:50 then idle for 0:10 after next wave starts what happens then?

Pretty sure you are "okay" if you are dead.
