This is a good start but as others are saying badly implemented. You really need a combination of time and some element or score/activity.

For example someone who rubber-bands the controller or drinking-birds the keyboard will not really get caught by your system, or so it seems. People who leech AFK rarely score high, even compared to people getting swept to victory by a nova guard on bronze.

wouldn't smth like 5 minutes be more fair?

i agree, i think 2 mins is a bit harsh, what if people have some minor short term emergency, like a pee break or phonecall.

Yeah, 5 min would be more fair. I also rather like my idea of match setting.

in my mind 2 mins is too long...this is a coop game, just go to ****** between matches...

5 mins..hell no, i see AFKers touching the remote once in a while...with 1 min you bother them more

Good job. This system causes more problems for legitimate players than afk players.

What if:

We're spectating after dying?
We're sitting behind a counter not moving waiting for enemies?

@The Shadow Broker: Seriously? 2 minutes is too long? Do you have a life outside of this game? People have to take short ( aka 5 min or less) breaks every once in a while. Say you have to go pee. Or go open the door. Or let the dog to the yard. That doesn't make you a leecher.

Also, Draining Dragon has a very good point about spectating or waiting in cover for enemies.

2 minutes? Does this mean I have to equip a tube to my body if I need to relieve myself so I can stay in a public game. o.0

1. Start playing Private matches with friends/recent players. Cant be kicked from those.
2. Spectating doesnt count for being AFK.
3. Instead of sitting still in cover, move a bit.

1. I'd like to but most of my pals have moved away from ME3 multi :/
2. Good to know.
3. Usually not a problem but situations may rise.

Also, I wasn't suggesting removing the auto-kick, merely extending the time limit a little.

This*100000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000. I don't understand why people are assuming that spectating will count as AFK'ing. Besides, I'm glad they're addressing the issue at all at least, but I guess no matter what you do there will always be whiners like people complaining that being dead will get them booted.

Every afk'er I've seen has been running into a wall rather than being completely still : /   A weight or rubber band would be enough to get around this mechanism.  Sorry Bioware, this is like sending a can of Lysol to a leper colony.

Dracian wrote...

Next time (if leechers are still here), don't use any consummable and die at the beginning of wave 3. That should solve the problem : either the guy leaves and gains nothing, either he starts to work and you leech him ^^

Yeah, I've been advocating this sort of response.  It's a pain in the pass, but we all have to band together to self-police to help combat this sort of thing until Bioware implements something more effective.

I cant agree with you Bergioynn....
It is a co-op game. 2 mins is very enough. More you are being not so cool with the teammates.
you can pee after or before each match. Same lunch.
you can respond a phone call while in match with controller hands-on.
any other "major" problem, leave the game to solve and comeback later.
This already happened to me last week (private game with 3 friends) and I leave cos I think to be fair. Leave the chair to another friend in to help. Much more honest.
If you leave you arent lost your life or something. You are lost 10/15 mins of gameplay only.

How I said, people complain about anything.

My only fear are people who use rubber to circle on the same place.
Lets see...

I think it would be better left to teammates to decide who is AFK and who needs to be kicked

1) If a leader/host is kicked, this forces an automatic restart of the wave, whether it is wave 1 on Bronze or wave 10 on Gold. I don't see any mention of that here. Two minutes of being AFK is not that long.
2) Teammates are not automatically replaced and if they are, most often not immediately. If someone is AFK , they can return at any time. If someone is kicked, but not replaced, the team has just been reduced by one player.
3) What if you tell your teammates you need a bathroom break or you have an important phonecall, your team says fine, but you're kicked anyway?

Imho, the ability to kick people while playing, same setup as in the lobby, all three other players having to agree, would be better than an automatic system which will no doubt take decisions which sometimes people won't agree with. Also, an in-game chat option as opposed to the voice chat (which no one seems to use, btw) would allow players to inform eachother of what is going on.

Also, how about the ability to rejoin the match you just left? Sometimes you lose connection, or you get desynched, or there is another reason to leave the server, but if you want to rejoin, you are thrown into another random game.

I'm not whining, I'm voicing my opinion on feature I think is a good idea but poorly implemented, thus trying to make it good in implemention too.

2 min. is too short. Life happens, sometimes you've to take a little time off.

I don't mean major problem, but minor problems that might take over 2 min, like letting the dog out. When it comes to your example of phone calls it's much more difficult to hold a phone and play if you are on PC.

exactly

this is a coop multiplayer game bergioynn, and coop means cooperation to sucess, if you want to take a walk with your dog in mid game you will screw your whole team that is fighting enemy waves to make you earn credits.

you can just do your stuff between games in menu screen and then start a game and be fully committed to coop with other players

Letting dog out =/= taking him for a walk. Besides, that was just an example about quick small interruptions people might need to take, not something I do to be a dick.

Yea now if only it booted them when they just afk and have a piece of tap on the crontroller making the screen spin ........

Also I feel the 2 minute thing is a tad short. What if I have to run and go pee near the beggining like between waves 3/4 ...... I'm sure running to the bathroom, peeing, washing my hands and then running back to my console takes me more than 2 minutes .....

:: Now ::

Point proved.

This is a good step toward discouraging Leechers.
If further steps are needed we will see...

Now we have complaints that people want to take phone calls / let dogs out / visit bathrooms during games.

This about politeness. If you not available for 20 minutes, don't play.

Do you see professional sportspeople take bathrooom breaks during games or take phone calls? No.

If it's an emergency, then the effect is that you will get kicked, but if your mission contribution was terminated, why should you get the credits?

Why are people acting like 2 minutes is too short?

It's fine.. It really takes you MORE than 2 minutes to pee and wash your hands..?

I'm expecting a thread now measuring pee times. Stopwatch at the ready?...

EDIT:

Sorry to be indelicate but had to test the matter.
With a domestic bathroom close to the Console/PC, including hand washing, you're looking at 1m 45...

In a larger home, or where a bathroom is on another floor, it's going to be touch-and-go....

(am I really having this conversation...?)
