Why didn't Bioware give us an epic crew like in ME2?

Just way too many squadmates in ME2.

I thought the number of squadmates in ME2 was just right. Frankly if it was up to me the squad in ME3 would have consisted of the following

Garrus
Tali
Wrex
Grunt
Jacob
Kasumi
Zaeed
Thane
Mordin
Samara
Kirrahee
Kal'Reegar
Balak
Kaidan
EDI
and leastly Vega.

I personally thought ME3 would be half the ME1 crew and half the ME2 crew.

ME1 Crew: Sure I'll drop what I'm doing and join you!

ME2 Crew: Sorry Shepard, i got my own life but thanks for the help.

Yeah, the justification for why the ME2 crew didn't join up doesn't work for some of them, or at least is no more compelling than the ME1 crew that rejoined.

Zaeed is a merc.  What's stopping him?
Kasumi says she can't because her skills aren't useful.  I don't recall that being a problem against the Collectors.
Samara could do just as much good on the Normandy as anywhere else.
Same with Grunt.
Tali officially rejoined after Rannoch.  It seems like the same could apply for Miranda.  The only real problem is that the game is practically done at that point.

Garrus left the Turians and continued his advising from the Normandy, and Liara destroyed her base and moved operations to the Normandy, so it's not like it's impossible for some of the characters to rejoin.

Ultimately, it seems like the choice of who was around boiled down to cost/time.  They realized that the Suicide Mission could mean that the work done on the characters in ME3 could go to waste for some players.  Unfortunately, it means that your reward for keeping them alive isn't as fulfilling as it could have been.  I would have at least liked to see them be temporary squadmates like Liara was in LotSB.  ME2 and ME3 are similar enough that I don't think it would have been a huge deal.  It would have been great to go through the monestary with Samara, or storm Sanctuary with Miranda.

I was actually really glad they cut down the crew options. I never even bothered to pick up Kaidan again when he tried to join up. As much as I liked all the crew in ME2, there were just too many of them. Several of them never did much besides sit around the Normandy and wait for the suicide mission. I liked having mostly useful crewmembers.

Cool story bro.

(I honestly thought the ME1 crew was the best.)

I agree. If it was a mish mash of Ash from ME1, Kaiden, Garrus, Tali and Wrex from ME3 and Liara from bits of each then it would have been perfect for me!

Oh and Mordin + Legion with a side of Thane. They were really the only ME2 characters that actually shone out for me.

This

Make Liara an interchangeable character to be replaced at will with your own Love Interest and I think ME3 crew is Okay. Mh... no, I think it also need a Krogan and then it's Okay. Javik is still awesome, though.

ME2 crew, however, was such an overload of badassery that I don't think any party in any other game can ever dream to reach that majestic. Everyone, from Zaeed to Samara, had something absolutely unforgettable and cool. Even Jacob, like someone on YouTube once said, used "his generic blandess like a gun". He's unforgettable because he was the only forgettable character in a crew of 12 unbelievably cool guys.

(And this is excluding my obsession for Jack, offcourse... I could fill a thread with all the reasons that makes me think she is the most awesome character ever, but I'll spare you the wall of text).

EDIT: also...

I know it was fairly impossible to do because of budget problems, but DAMN that would have been so f***** epic.

I seriously thought Jack was going to end up on the Normandy for a bit, even look at her Jacket - looks like Health Bars, but that's just nitpicking, plus the whole dedication towards her re-design. Popularity wins out I guess, too bad for her.  Though, I'm happy with her role regardless, I just wouldn't mind some more :wizard:

ME2 crew was epic? lol. I only liked five people out of that crew, even then I still prefred ME and mE3's tight knit group.

I basically agree with this.

Obviously it can't hurt to have some choice and they were mostly great characters but ending up with nearly 20 Squad-Mates to choose from when you can only pick two at a time just got a bit overkill in my opinion.

That being said I'm currently playing through ME3 with a save game where Garrus and Tali died in ME2 and I decided not to recruit Ashley and I basically only have 4 Squad Mates to choose from, and that's including Javik.

Also, this. Just replace "Jack" in there with "Miranda" for me, though I would not say no to having Jack back. She's awesome too.

I was hoping for a 'best of' of ME1 and ME2 squadmates, with two newbies. Wrex, Mordin, Garrus, Tali, Jack, Legion, Liara, Miranda, Kaidan/Ashley, a Batarian and a human character. Maybe James, I'm still kinda 50/50 on him.

Anyhoo, I agree with OP 100%.  We get every single ME1 character except Wrex (WTF?) but not a single ME2 squadie.  They said it was so they could focus more on them individualy, but I didn't really feel it (aside from Liara who is shoved down our throats)

Honestly I liked the ME1 crew better. Maybe it's because they're the originals, I don't know. I would have loved to have the ME1 squad with Mordin, Legion, and Thane. However, due to ME2's story line it wasn't plausible. Wrex is too important now, Liara is on Wall St., Ash/Kaidan don't join you because you just basically mind****ed them by coming back from the dead...etc. Garrus only made sense to bring back because well, where else was he going to go?

The ME3's squad really feels like a team where everyone has relationships with each other...even if I don't like all squadmembers (I would have replaced Tali with Grunt and Garrus with Samara). It's the best squad in the series, imo.

Yes. Both Kirrahee and Kal'Reegar would have been excellent additions. We need more bad asses from unlikely species. It wasn't that hard to save either of them, anyway. The only playthrough where Kirrahee died on me was my Renegade Shepard were I intended for him to die. And I haven't even managed to have Kal'Reegar die off, yet.

I was glad they kept it simple. ME2 was just character overload, and I never cared for most of them as a result.

I could have maybe made room for one or two of the ME2 squaddies, but for the most part I was very happy with what I had. I would have happily bumped out Liara as a permanent squaddies for another squaddie. Liara could have bunked on the ship, but maybe someone else as a fighter? Still it irritates me that several incidents that Liara was given by default should have gone to the generic LI (whoever that wound up being), and then Liara had to go on about 4 different missions. It made me feel like Liara was always looking over my shoulder.

16 people lol.  So you wanted even more than ME2.

To each his/her own I guess.  That's way too many for me.  I'm fine with a 5-6 person tight knit crew.

I liked the ME2 squad but I'm actually happy with the ME3 squad.

Having Liara, VS, Garrus, Tali makes it feel a lot more like the good ol' ME1 squad.

I'm glad you agree and the only reason Balak was on that list in case your wondering as I always felt that in ME1, there was more to him then what we were shown and still do.

And this, kids, is why an "Everyone can die" ending is almost ALWAYS done at the END of a franchise, not in the MIDDLE.
